Health EOSINOPIHILIC GRANULOMA’s “You cant trust google all the time....a lesson in non-assumption....can fleas cause airway disease?” A 10 month old frenchie presented with a relatively fast onset of symptoms associated commonly with “Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome”. Over a short space of time (2-3 weeks), she developed an awful snoring noise (both when awake and asleep), struggling to cope with excercise, panting a lot, and seemingly taking 45 minutes to cool down, after a 5 minute walk, on a moderate day. Previously this frenchie never snored (even when asleep) and could play in the park actively and for long periods. She had also started to itch over the proceeding 3 weeks. Given the research people can easily do these days, the owners concluded that the dog had an overlong soft palate and was booked in for surgery. Unfortunately its not possible to properly asses a dogs palate conscious, so the dog was booked in for anaesthesia, examination of the palate with view to (almost certainly) performing the required surgery. It struck me as odd that a dog would go from being seemingly perfect in the respiratory department, to struggling, over such a short space of time. Once anaesthetised, the palate was examined. While it was slightly overlong, the main stark observation was that the palate was swollen, and covered in a number of plaque-like growths. The swelling and the growths was responsible for obstructing air flow in the throat region and for the subsequent lesions developed. The owner was called and biopsies taken of the lumps.

Biopsy results showed “Eosinophilic granuloma”. These plaques result from allergic reactions insect bites, food allergies or environmental. Most commonly our “allergic frenchies” itch a lot. However sometimes as an abberation of the immune system, it causes allergic reactions to manifest as these plaques in the oral cavity. This type of reaction is very well known and well described in cats. They occur in dogs and horses but are much more rare. In 18 years of being a vet this is the 1st time i’ve ever seen this in a dog. The dog will now have an allergy screen test done and we will work on that to get to the bottom of this and clear this up. As this is a rare and an interesting case, i will follow up over coming months as to the progress. Thank you Dr. Frenchie for writing this article for the French Bulldog Magazine!
