Breed Healthy French Bulldogs
Breed Healthy French Bulldogs By Maggie Swart When the health of the French Bulldog is evaluated, one must always keep in mind that for this breed, health normalcy cannot be the goal since only health consciousness/improvement can be achieved. This is due to the way French Bulldogs were constructed centuries ago and therefore each and every French Bulldog has recessive genes that could affect some puppies more than other. Having said this, we cannot stand back and adopt the approach that a healthy breeding programme will not generate any benefits. Each breeder should: Assess their own breeding stock and determine their own rate of progress to minimalise breeding of affected puppies Maintain and enhance the quality of the breed, ie follow the Breed Standard. Unfortunately, DNA testing for French Bulldogs only covers diseases that affect 3% or less of the population. (According to studies done in the UK, Australia, USA and Germany). Therefore it is not possible to use Genetic Counselling to effectively control the spread of defective genes, while preserving the health and genetic diversity of the population. It is important to note that the combatting of defective genes (as per health standard and breed standard) should not be done at the expense of health levels nor by reducing the genetic diversity of the population

This means in short that if 3 dogs have breathing disorders, it may not be appropriate to remove those dogs from a breeding programme if you are left with only 1 dog to breed with. The solution to the problem is not to remove those dogs and import 3 others, not knowing whether they will have the same issues. A healthy breeding programme would require that you replace those 3 dogs with offsprings who do not have breathing disorders. This is a process and as all breeders know, will take time to implement. Since we do not have DNA testing available as a tool for detecting the key health issues of the breed, we cannot determine at a puppy stage whether they are affected, but only after at least 12 months elapsed. A breeder will therefore be continuously in the position that the puppy they selected for breeding, is affected or a carrier. Where the ideal is to select a normal puppy for breeding purposes.

BREEDERS MUST INCORPORATE THE FOLLOWING IN THEIR BREEDING PROGRAMME: Know the key requirements for the Breed as outlined in the Breed Standard Study the health issues with high occurrence in the Breed Document the prevalence and omission of numbers 1 and 2 above for each one of your breeding stock, including their parents and grand-parents The above steps will enable you to decrease carrier risk (for the health issues) and increase carrier frequency (for the traits required by the Breed Standard) with each generation bred. UNDERSTANDING RECESSIVE GENES A layman’s definition of the recessive gene is: the trait that the gene carries cannot be seen, but it may be passed on to offspring dominantly (affected dog) or recessively (carrier) or not at all (normal). BREEDERS MUST INCORPORATE THE FOLLOWING IN THEIR BREEDING PROGRAMME: Breed known Carrier or Affected dogs to lower risk dogs Replace known Carrier or Affected dogs with it’s lower risk offspring Repeat the process in the next generation – do NOT omit this step Manage number of carriers and affected dogs produced through the principles of sex-linked genes: Using normal males will always lose the defective gene Carrier mothers have 50% affected sons . Affected males have carrier mothers, and all daughters produced are carriers Replace carrier females with normal male siblings or normal male offspring Repeat the process in the next generation

The key to improvement is to HAVE A HEALTHY BREEDING PROGRAMME.

It’s cold autumn, outside the wind is playing with fallen leaves, shabby sunrays are heating us through the glass of one restaurant’s window in Prague, where I am sitting with my husband, with us are sharing the company around the table ,one of the most epic czech breeders of french bulldogs, Mrs. Jana Kreplova (Aglaos kennel) and her slovak colleague , respected breeder of french bulldogs Mr. Marek Vašíček (Slavic Storm kennel) with his brother Peter. While sipping lovely coffee and tasting an exquisit desserts we are talking. I like the way how they treat each other, like friends, mentors and their work with french bulldogs are taking very seriously and I dare to say personally. Slowly we are tangling out the interview not just about french bulldogs, but also about their life priorities,joys, dreams and hard work, which is not always rewarded. Mrs. Jana, where came up that idea to get the first french bulldog? Jana: We both with my husband shared some feeling, that someone in the house is missing and as longer more often resonated the sentence. Once we will become some jolly cutie“. French bulldog has always had some charm for us due to it’s joyful character and comic. After a short consideration we came home with the frenchie boy Bob, who is now 10,5 years old. He is happy and active boy, who will always remain with the special status, that first one“. We love him so much.

Mr. Marek, what was your way to the first french bulldog ? Marek: I dreamed up my first own frenchie in a sleep. I had seen him so real in that dream. When I woke up in the morning, since that moment I knew, that I won’t have another breed, but only the french bulldog.Few weeks later have joined our company the frenchie boy Vendelin. These days he is 9 years old and he still enjoys life in a good health and we are very happy to have him. Does your family helping you around with the Kennel? Jana: We have it half to half. My partner likes to say, that I posess the know how and he - his hands. Marek: Yes, but most of the care is up to me, but I don’t mind it. I like that work so much.

What about your hobbies? Are your frenchies involved in them with the helping paw? Jana: I have to confess, that I have no time for another hobbies. My main hobby are french bulldogs and care around them. And if I even spare some time, then I dedicate them to classic prints and photocollage. Marek: My greatest hobby are frenchies themselves and everything around them. Then I have some deep interest in the World’s history, I favour to watch some good detective movies in the TV and I like so much going with my dogs for a long walks into the nature.

In a few words, how would you describe the french bulldog? Jana: I see a frenchie like a universal member for the family. Marek: It’s a little clown, that will touch your heart. How is the living round with frenchies? Do you have a friendly dog-pack or rather showing rivalry? Jana: I am living very pleasant with french bulldog, however I am creating individual groups to prevent pointless conflicts. Dominance is being often the reason to separate the dogpack. Marek: I don’t have some lager issues, but I am using the similar module as Jana. I do own dominant male dogs as well. Is french bulldog difficult due to the breeding and care? Marek: I don’t think there would be some greater issue with breeding, but there is still good to consider pros anc cons of the breeding itself. Jana: From my point of view, yes. Thanks to the great popularity of frenchies logically increases the demand. Regrettably, I am more and more often meeting with the fact, that quantity precedes the quality.

Do you think, that french bulldogs in Czecho- Slovakia posess good quality of health? Jana: I dont think, that frenchies in our country would be more burdened from this side, than frenchies in other lands. As wherever else they might suffer with cardio related issues, patellas, spine and brachycephalic syndrome. Marek: In my opinion are french bulldogs in very good health condition in the Czech and as well in Slovak Republic. Do you agree with preventive health testing in french bulldogs? Jana: Yes, I agree with the preventive testing. I do the testing for a long period of time on my own, in our Kennel.Despite this in the Czech club , health tests are not being a part of conditions for bonitation and breeding afterwards, but Czech breeders approach this trend positively. I am happy, that the health testing is on increase. Marek: Yes, I do absolutely agree with Jana. I hope,that preventive testing will spread widely. Please tell me, how your own Kennels are different from those others? Jana: I am breeding frenchies with my heart at the first place and giving to our dogs all my time and energy. Marek: Mostly patience and preciseness are making my kennel different from those other kennels.

How are you choosing right prospective persons for your litters? Jana: For myself, always win the personal feelings towards that person. The willof my heart had never let me down. On the paralell to this I do try my best to know much as I can about the interested person. Marek: With personal feeling, that we somehow fit with the prospective person. We have to be tuned on the same wawe. Then with a wider conversation I try to find out as much information as possible about the future life of my pup. On which of your litters are you most proud of? Jana: I am very proud of our dog. Intch. Obi Wan Aglaos (owner Mrs. Hatsumi Harada – Japan), not just for the fact, that he is making us the great advertisement in Japan, but as well for that we have brought back to this bloodline from Obi Wan, as father, we have a male and female dog at home, which both have won the exhibition. It is very interesting to see how genetics „works“. Marek: For me the greatest pride belongs to the dog Jch., Ch. Alatyr Noix Slavic Storm (owner Mr. Miro Srnka – Slovakia).

Where we can meet your previous litters? Jana: Mostly on the exhibitions abroad. Currently first and formest in Germany,Japan,Poland, Russia. Otherwise are descendants of our dogs in Canada, Indonesia,Poland, Hungary and Dennmark (this refers to litters of Kennels abroad). Marek: You may meet my previous litters not just in Czech and Slovak Republic, but also in Finland, Sweden , USA, Canada, Dennmark, Italy and as well often in Asia, where they meet with the huge popularity from their owners. Which bloodline do you prefer? Who is, or rather who was you greatest dog ideal? Jana: I have a few favourite bloodlines, but I think, that pedigree of my dogs speaks itself. I do fancy a lot russian dog „Anton“ A´Vigdors Ramasseur des Compliments. Marek: I can’t say, that I have only one favourite bloodline. I love to read and observe various bloodlines. My favourite dog was dannish Ch. Bullinium´s Champ Rocco.

What kind of way are you choosing dog individuals to your breeding? Jana: I am looking a lot on the parents, through bloodlines, appearance, a huge role is playing the health condition and absolved tests. Marek: I am giving a lot to the first impression and intuition, then I am noticing the same criteria as Jana. Do you think,that you have ever made a mistake, that you might regret according to the breeding? Marek: Yes, man stumbles. Pityfully the past can’t be returned back, but man is also learning from his mistakes. Today I would be muchmore clever and would make few things other way. Jana: No, I always went my own way. But in every case breeding of cats gave me a great lesson to learn.

What is your relationship to the exhibitions? How you might asess domestic and abroad exhibitions at all? Jana: I fancy exhibitions a lot. I am always looking forward to the, because I will meet with people, that I can’t see regularly. I would asess Czechoslovak exhibitions very positively. Anyhow they stay on the same level as those abroad. Marek: I like them very much. Especially, when I know,that I am going to meet with Jana and other friends as well. As well I like a healthy rivalry between us breeders. Czechoslovak exhibitions posess from my point of view very good level. On club exhibitions are judges very good chosen and they have also very nice prizes. How do you celebrate your victories? And how do you cope with the loss in the ring? Jana: I am not celebrating them, but I share my sucess with my closest relatives. I am projecting the achievement in my head even for few days after the exhibition. I take failures as the motivation for working harder Marek: I always open the bottle of some fine quality of wine and celebrating with family and friends. The loss hurts, but pushes you forward.

What is the greatest reward for your work? Jana: The great reward is for me the moment, when I meet with the breeder and he commend me for what I am doing and even show some interest for the future cooperation. Marek: The reward means some achievements from exhibitions, coomend for my work and nevertheless the positive feedback coming from other breeders and owners of my previous litters. What is the credo of your life? Jana: Never is that bad, that it can’t be worse, because of that we should be happy from every nic day and meeting with good people! Marek: Only persistence and training makes you master. Our pleasant interview is on the end, would you like to leave some message for our readers? Jana: To all lovers of french bulldogs and all living creatures, as well to all people of good will, I am wishing Merry Christmas and good health in the year 2016!
