From the Editor

Yet another issue of French Bulldog Magazine. A special word of thanks to all our readers and supporters all over the world! Without your support there is no magazine. In this issue we ask the question whether itt is acceptable to ship a pregnant bitch abroad or not? We also ask the question, are you an unscrupolous breeder, and whether unscrupulous breeders must be named and shamed and also look further into the legal ramifications of this. Is it not time we look at the issue of unscrupulous puppy buyers? We always blame the breeders, but it takes two to tango! I trust you will enjoy this issue of French Bulldog Magazine.

French Bulldog Magazine Code of Ethics

If you would like to advertise in this magazine or be a member of our Facebook group please ensure you adhere to this code of ethics. 1) Chooses breeding stock carefully, with an eye to physical and temperamental soundness. 2) Chooses a stud because he is complementary to the bitch and not because he is nearby, popular or cheap. 3) Does genetic testing for defects such as hip dysplasia before breeding, as well as pedigree analysis for less obvious faults. 4) Breeds only for the purpose of preserving or improving the breed and never for ego satisfaction, financial gain or “because she/he ought to be bred at least once. 5) Provides the bitch with a warm, safe, comfortable place to whelp and care for her pups. Provides pre- and post-natal veterinary care for the bitch and her pups. 6) Begins a medically-sound inoculation program before the bitch is bred andcontinues it when the pups are the proper age. 7) Is willing to supply previous buyers as references and not just those who bought show dogs or who co-own dogs with the breeder. Is able to provide written certification of freedom from genetic diseases that affect the breed. 8) Belongs to a local or regional breed club and is willing and able to supplythe names of officers and members of that club as references. Is very concerned that all pups are placed in suitable homes. To that end, personal interviews with buyers are conducted with information requested about life-style, children, other animals, fencing and general knowledge ofthe breed. Proper contracts, guarantees, medical records and pedigree are all in writing and understood by all concerned. 9) Accepts life-long responsibility for the pups’ welfare, assisting when necessary in finding a suitable new home for dogs whose family circumstanceschange. 10) Stays in touch with puppy-buyers, ready with advice, referrals, assistance and empathy.

Degenerative Myelopathy

What is Degenerative Myelopathy? Are you testing for it or not? Degenerative myelopathy is a progressive disease of the spinal cord in older dogs. The disease has an insidious onset typically between 8 and 14 years of age. It begins with a loss of coordination (ataxia) in the hind limbs. The affected dog will wobble when walking, knuckle over or drag the feet. This can first occur in one hind limb and then affect the other. As the disease progresses, the limbs become weak and the dog begins to buckle and has difficulty standing. The weakness gets progressively worse until the dog is unable to walk. The clinical course can range from 6 months to 1 year before dogs become paraplegic. If signs progress for a longer period of time, loss of urinary and fecal continence may occur and eventually weakness will develop in the front limbs. Another key feature of DM is that it is not a painful disease.

How do you evaluate a stud dog?

How do you evaluate stud dogs? For me first of all the dog must complement my bitch. If he does, is he available for stud? Is he a proven sire? Has he passed all health tests? Can I afford the stud fee? I don’t believe in using the top winning dog just because he is the top winner. I may not like him after all.

Dog loves to eat her feet. Advice?

Any advice for this person?l veterinary friends... I have a dog who loves to eat her feet, I’ve changed diet so many times, i now actually make food from scratch, I’ve tried betadine baths, detole baths, you name it! Anyone have any other idea I can try please, happy to see someone. “Ï have a couple of dogs that like to munch. I use sudocream to relieve the itchiness and it works well. A build up of bacteria and also moisture can cause them to chew” There is a product called Bitter Apple that is supposed to stop chewing” “Apoquel tablets from vet, they work very well. FYI I’m not 100% sure but they also might have an immunosuppressant quality to them. Just food for thought” “Are you absolutely sure that that feet does not hurt the dog? Have x-rays taken? And pain can be in spine in this case too””

Keeper or not?

You have a puppy bitch. She is not better than her mother. The rule of thumb in going forward in a breeding program is “do not keep a puppy that is not as good as or better than the parents” Do you agree with this? Some comments received: “I agree with it to an extent. If your dam is of super quality, there isn’t much room for improvement unless you are very lucky. If you started with just an average dam, then that’s an easy decision. Also you have to factor in the pedigree, meaning that if you are trying to maintain or keep a pedigree alive, then that is a major deciding factor” “I agree she should not be a keeper. I understand and agree with keeping a pedigree alive but that would be extremely rare. Most likely you would have already kept a puppy bitch or two along the way from previous litters” “What would worry me most about this scenario is missing so bad on what I planned with the breeding and what the end result was. You would have really done a terrible job picking the sire to end up with puppies that don’t bring out the best from their parents” “As a breeder and a person who is supposed to be knowledgable in your specific breed and who understands structure you should be able to pick out from a puppy whether the puppy bitch will be up to scratch. When keeping a female, I generally have a criteria that the puppy has to be better than both parent/s or equally as good.” “I do not agree, there are many many factors that weigh into the decision not just the confirmation of said bitch...””

Unscrupulous puppy buyers

Do buyers need to take responsibility for whats happening in the market? Celeste MacLeod Barlow wrote: “Any “breeder” can open up shop with a vagina and a penis. Buyers who do not do research, go and purchase a puppy which is clearly likely to have health issues, and buyers who purchase without due diligence need to also be held to a higher standard. We are so quick to demonise breeders and put poor purchasing habits down to ignorance, but really it’s like buying pharmaceuticals off a drug dealer, then getting yourself all in a bunch when your pharmaceutical is somehow under par or appears to be crack!! We need to shame buyers who support these breeders and not sit there and say “oh, you didn’t know” -- pat, pat, pat --As long as there is a market to sell, unscrupulous breeders will continue to thrive. Anyone with even a basic IQ level is going to do research before purchasing an animal you are going to have as part of your family for the next 12-15 years. I am angry at unscrupulous breeders and their actions, but I am at that point when we need to place the blame on unscrupulous puppy buyers who are feeding this nightmare.

Are You an Unscrupulous Breeder?

The unscrupulous person is without scruples of conscience, and disregards, or has contempt for, laws of right or justice with which he or she is perfectly well acquainted, and which should restrain his or her actions: unscrupulous in methods of making money, in taking advantage of the unfortunate. The unprincipled .., Why do we have so many unscrupulous breeders in French Bulldogs? These are unscrupulous breeders: Those who over breed !

Those who do not respect the animal who fulfill their pockets - those who turns their heads away... Breeders that promote color faulted dogs as rare. The reason certain colors are considered faults and are not allowed to compete in the breed ring the gene that carries the color is also a carrier of other genetic health issues. Breeders that will purposely breed dogs of certain colors and color patterns together. Such as merles to merles. A breeding like this is guaranteed to produce some blind and deaf puppies. Breeders that register color dogs fraudulently as standard colors. Breeders that import and export pregnant bitches.

Expose an Unscrupulous Breeder?

Under South African law, statements MAY be defamatory EVEN IF THEY ARE true (Our law on defamation is not the same as in the USA, which many people assume). In other words, you may be charged with defamation even if what you are saying is totally true. Something needs to be true AND in the public interest (not ‘interesting to the public’) in order for you to have a defence against defamation. Just avoid it. It’s a minefield. Or in the case of blue breeders and color breeders is it in the public interest to inform the public about unscrupulous breeders? Breeders have for years protected the breed and upheld the standard. Why allow a small group of people who are in breeding French Bulldogs for monetary reasons only to destroy our breed? What does the law say in your country?

Should champions compete for CC?

“In the UK we don’t have a Champions class . And I’m pleased we don’t it’s certainly not nonsense for the top dog to be awarded the CC . The best dogs are there to be beaten and the title of Champion should be hard to earn. To me the CC should only ever be awarded to the best exhibit on the day not the 2nd best as this devalues the title of Champion . I’ve been fortunate to judge in a number of countries around the world and found the Champions class on a number of occasions to be full of a lot of very poor examples of the breed who were not even close to being worthy of a title of Champion”.- Dean Cund “I think the UK system is the best. Just look at whats happening with Bulldogs in the UK - several good dogs in the ring and although one dog is dominating there are several other dogs of good quality who also wins CCs and become champions. I wouldn’t like to see one dog winning all the time as it is boring and discouraging to other breeders who may also have great dogs””. “Making dogs champions just for the sake of making them champions doesn’t serve a purpose. Why have a title if your dog is not worthy of that title?””

Export/Import a Pregnant Bitch?

Would you sell a pregnant bitch? And would you send her on a 10 hour flight in a cargo cabin? Would you buy a pregnant bitch and let her fly in a cargo cabin for ten or more hours? So instead of shipping semen they are shipping an enitre dog confirmed in welp. The overwhelming response to this question which i have posted on Facebook have been that is NOT acceptable. Some of the comments I have received: ‘No irresponsible.” “Definitely not. If someone has they should be ashamed of themselves”. “Ever never”’. “I think an ethical breeder would never do that , neither sell or buy a pregnant bitch” NEVER EVER EVERRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! “Sick how could they” If you still think it acceptable to sell and export a pregnant bitch think again - Even though this is done by many people around the world it is WRONG and UNACCEPTABLE!
