At home Bandit gets to show his excellent temperament and our two daughters has so much fun with him, whether it is dressing him up or putting up sunglasses for him, he is always game. We have to thank Eurika his breeder for giving him to us after he was rescued from a previous owner and lived under terrible conditions. We never knew bandit would change our lives in the way he has. Special thanks to Harry and Gill Carter (Seastaff) in the U.K. for sending Bandit’s father over to South Africa, without him there wouldn’t be a Bandit. We thank all judges from the bottom of our hearts for recognising Bandit’s special qualities and for making Bandit what he is today, a legend.

From the Editor Another beautiful issue of Dog Winner World. A big thank you to all our advertisers, we appreciate your support. Another big thank you to the owners and breeders of Bandit who allowed us to use him for the cover! Truly an amazing dog! Its a massive job to publish three magazines at the same time and having a full time job. In some months it will just be impossible to publish all three magazines at the same time due to work considerations and some of our advertisers may want there ads published elsewhere first, before we can publish it in Dog Winner World. Then it will only be published during the course of the next month. Our designers are superb and it is such a pleasure working with them. For most of them, this is their way of earning a living. Please pay them for the services rendered! A number of people in South Africa have recenrly lost puppies to the dreadfiul Parvovirus. There is also a pandemic in Italy. Should we be concerned? I trust that you will enjoy this issue of Dog Winner World.

DogWinnerWorld Code of Ethics

If you would like to advertise in this magazine or be a member of our Facebook group please ensure you adhere to this code of ethics. 1) Chooses breeding stock carefully, with an eye to physical and temperamental soundness. 2) Chooses a stud because he is complementary to the bitch and not because he is nearby, popular or cheap. 3) Does genetic testing for defects such as hip dysplasia before breeding, as well as pedigree analysis for less obvious faults. 4) Breeds only for the purpose of preserving or improving the breed and never for ego satisfaction, financial gain or “because she/he ought to be bred at least once. 5) Provides the bitch with a warm, safe, comfortable place to whelp and care for her pups. Provides pre- and post-natal veterinary care for the bitch and her pups. 6) Begins a medically-sound inoculation program before the bitch is bred andcontinues it when the pups are the proper age. 7) Is willing to supply previous buyers as references and not just those who bought show dogs or who co-own dogs with the breeder. Is able to provide written certification of freedom from genetic diseases that affect the breed. 8) Belongs to a local or regional breed club and is willing and able to supplythe names of officers and members of that club as references. Is very concerned that all pups are placed in suitable homes. To that end, personal interviews with buyers are conducted with information requested about life-style, children, other animals, fencing and general knowledge ofthe breed. Proper contracts, guarantees, medical records and pedigree are all in writing and understood by all concerned. 9) Accepts life-long responsibility for the pups’ welfare, assisting when necessary in finding a suitable new home for dogs whose family circumstanceschange. 10) Stays in touch with puppy-buyers, ready with advice, referrals, assistance and empathy. Is a treasure you will want as a friend for life.

Importing semen These are some of the things you have to consider if you consider importing or exporting frozen semen: 1) what recourse do I have if I have paid the money and don’t get the semen (it gets lost between the sender and the receiver) or the quality of the sperm is bad or the original DNA swab taken of the dog does not agree to the DNA of the sperm? 2) The cost involved (transport is expensive) 3) Health regulations (what permits are required?) 4) Why do you need a proper written agreement with the seller of the semen? Is it enforceable and at what cost? 5) What warranties or guarantees do you need from the seller? 6) Certain countries do not allow the exportation of semen (for example Japan and Korea?) 7) What if the seller misrepresent the HUU Status of the dog and your puppies test positive for HUU? (Assuming your bitch is HUU clear)? 8) Your Kennel Club may have some additional requirements you have to comply with 9) Quality tests done on sperm (insist on this) 10) It takes time and effort to take a dog to a vet to collect his sperm.

Parvovirus - a crisis?

Several South African breeders have lost puppies in recent months due to parvovirus after they have used the Nobivac vaccine. Since then several breeders in other countries have come forward. For our South African readers an open meeting has been scheduled at the Goldfields Kennel Club Club House for Sunday 29 October 2016. Time: 11:00 am. This from a US breeder: ““I am dealing with parvovirus as we speak. 7 days after vaccination all 3 of my litters started to show symptoms. They don’t go anywhere We don’t have people over when we have puppies I prep my nursery and clean using trifectant We don’t wear shoes in the house and avoid places where dogs go. I lost 3 puppies in the first 2 days THEN I FOUND A MIRACLE Colloidal silver Sub q fluids Nutrical Bone broth Homeopathic parvovirus medicine From here on out I’ll swear by colloidal silver In all of my years working with dogs and seeing parvo hundreds of times working in a veterinary clinic and the shelter I’ve never seen such a fast recovery. We’re not out of the woods yet “3 puppies still not eating. But I’m hopeful they will pull through””

Ethics in show ring

How can people who co-own dogs together show under one another? This is highly unethical in my books anyway. Come on guys u know its wrong! Friends should never put each other in such awkward positions! A lap of honour would have been the honourable thing to do! Our sport doesnt it seems need to be killed, its extinct! It is time people take the ethics of this sport serious!

Dog Winner World September 2016 Page: 35

Registration body The Kennel Union of Southern Africa (KUSA) is the recognised registry body for dogs in South Africa. In the UK its the Kennel Club and in the USA the American Kennel Club. If someone tells you the puppy you are buying is registered and it is not with the recognised registry body for dogs in your country, you are not buying a registered puppy. Share the message to the public! As breeders we need to do more to protect the status of pure bred dogs!

Dog Winner World September 2016 Page: 37

Be kind to new breeders Be kind to each other and encourage young breeders! We all learn as we go along and no-one knows everything. Most importantly - have fun! Winning is great but not at the expense of other people and their dogs! Think twice before you break down other people’s dogs or their character on Facebook! A word of encouragement may mean the world to one person! I got this message from a bulldog breeder in the USA after I have liked a picture of his dog on Facebook: “Thank you for liking Rubee, Mr. Koekemoer. This means a lot to me from a small time breeder in Lebanon, OR., especially from you, who is well respected and known Internationaly in Bulldogs. Brenda and I breed for the betterment of our beloved breed. We have only 7 years of experience under our belt-- follow the mentorship of your discussion group and others-- and are having fun! We share a common vision. Your appreciation from Cape Town gives us confidence we are on the right track. Best regards, Joel Fonatanos” We need new breeders - be kind to them and encourage them!

Why become a judge?

What is your motivation for becoming a judge is healthy and sound? If you’re embarking on this life- changing new role, are you wanting to “go out there and prove a point”, or do you, perhaps, feel that you can do a far better job than the judges already in the ring? Are you starting to judge because you no longer want to run around the ring as an exhibitor, or do you feel there’s nothing else interesting in dogdom to keep you occupied? Are you doing it in order to feed your ego, or do you see it as a ticket to overseas trips? Moving into the role of breed judge with any of these motivations would be a huge mistake – best you abandon the notion before you spend too much time and money proving to yourself and your exhibitors that this role would not be suitable for you. Let us know what is your motivation!
