Thirty years ago, I walked into a small tradeshow down by Quidi Vidi Lake. It’s now the location of the Dominion grocery store in St. John’s, NL. I remember hearing rumblings of oil discovery and the possibility of opportunity with Hibernia at that tradeshow. With no logical explanation, I left the tradeshow and felt as though I had gotten hit by bolt of lightning. I said to myself, “THIS, right here, THIS oil and gas is the opportunity of our future for Newfoundland and Labrador.”

I don’t know if you’ve ever been hit with a bolt of inspiration, but that summer day, it hit me like a lightning rod. Up until then, I had never been in the oil business or had a magazine of my own, but somehow the heaven’s collided, and The Oil and Gas Magazine was born.

At the age of 27, I had no idea how to start a business or how to make it all work. But the declaration that I was going to do it was intense and my determination was high.

I lived on Signal Hill at the time. Smack dab in the heart of St. John’s Newfoundland, and that’s where I started my company.

Six years before we had any oil ashore, I knew in my bones there was oil out there. And a lot of it.

Back in 1990, when I started the conceptual framework for the magazine, times were tough, and the economic outlook was dismal. The primary commercial driver of the province was the fishery, and it was collapsing. The cod fishery was the main staple and the fish stocks dropped to unforgivable numbers.

This forced the hand of the government to enforce a moratorium on fishing which left us as dry as the salt fish that hung out on the Flakes.

Around the same time my father had left his post at the United Nations and come home to take on the role of Chairman of the Public Service Commission. Always and forever in my court, my father would often say, “T, you can do anything.”

Be careful what you say to your kids. They are listening.My father’s words gave me the courage to start a magazine about the oil and gas industry, with no journalism training what so ever. I didn’t know how to sell advertising or how to make a magazine profitable. But like many Newfoundlanders, necessity called, and I did it anyway.

In the heart of a recession, six years before we would have any oil produced by this province, The Oil and Gas Magazine was born.

It was a massive undertaking that only could have happened with sheer stubbornness. Luckily that trait is in the blood of most Newfoundlanders. Survival on island made us this way.

Founded in a small room in the back of that Signal Hill home, The OGM was locally produced but globally grown. The products we created over the years included: The Mining Magazine, City Spirit Magazine for tourism, and The Oil and Gas Magazine. The one that stood the test of time was The Oil and Gas Magazine.

It’s funny because in most business schools, they don’t teach the things that I needed to succeed. I’ve haven’t seen a Master’s in resilience or determination and yet it was the foundation of

starting something from nothing. It just goes to show that it’s not as much what you know but who you are, that counts.

As I developed the magazine and wrote about the projects and the people, I learned about the oil and gas industry in all its various levels – and it fascinated me. This industry was global, transient, and had accomplished the things that I felt were truly important like energizing, uniting and serving the world.

It was evident when we traveled to Aberdeen, Stavanger, Abu Dhabi, Calgary, Houston, and other energy cities, the same companies worked unilaterally with a global vision. It was incredible to watch the greatest minds on the planet harness the resource that energized the world.

Without petroleum, virtually nothing moves. To get it, we had the greatest challenges to overcome. The Oil and Gas Magazine (now The OGM) illuminated those challenges and the solutions found to bring the world energy and allow us all to prosper.

The OGM and I grew up together. We danced for 30 years celebrating the business opportunities, companies, and accomplishments. I can only be grateful for the range of

experiences that this entrepreneurial adventure brought to me.

Today we’ve expanded The OGM to OUR GREAT MINDS. It represents the great people and how they think about business, industry, and creating a new and sustainable future. With advances in the digital revolution, we now have a print and online publication. Digital publishing is so advanced that one story can reach a million readers in less than four weeks.

To this day, I believe it’s the collective intelligence of our industry working together that has kept this world moving and brought us to the most advanced times in history. Now it’s up to all of us to ensure we use fossil fuels to bring in new energy and be responsible for creating a sustainable future that allows our children to prosper.

It has been my absolute and profound privilege to create stories and marketing channels that elevate our people, our clients, our industry. I’m grateful for all those who have contributed to this vision over the past 30 years. It feels like a lifetime of achievement and yet we’ve only just begun.

BARACK OBAMA HE LEVELLED THE PLAYING FIELD

I was living in Abu Dhabi at the time that Barack Obama became elected to the Presidency of the United States of America. It was Jan. 20, 2009.

The Obama administration broke down long-standing barriers to public access and opened up previously inaccessible records.

While I hadn’t followed the election closely as I was halfway around the world, I distinctly remember the tears of freedom roll down my face when I heard the news.

His was the first government to voluntarily disclose the list of people who visit the White House. The administration declassified information on the current size of the U.S. nuclear weapons arsenal as well they published the intelligence budget requests. President’s Daily Briefs were also made exempt from declassification, which then sparked a historical precedent where thousands of previous President’s Daily Briefs became declassified and made available.

I say tears of freedom because that’s precicely what they were. Freedom from racism, women’s oppression, sexual orientation suppression, financial corruption and so many other barriers to human progress came crashing to the ground when Barack Obama became leader of the US. I knew intuitively way back when, that Barack Obama would bring all of this to the table, and more.

The Obama Administration established a National Declassification Center to facilitate and streamline declassification, making it one of the most historical and transparent systems to date.

THE PEOPLE’S PRESIDENT Barack Obama was far more than a President. He was the opportunity to rise above the darkness and liberate egominded limitations. His tenure was a chance to embrace the planetary consciousness that was trying desperately to come in, if humankind would just get out of thier own way.

Barack shattered political beliefs that power came from the White House, and he put it back in the hands of every American. He said, “Change doesn’t come from Washington. Change comes to Washington,” and he led the government from that vantage point.

He guided the nation with a policy of integrity. He said, “Transparency and the rule of law will be the touchstones of this presidency.” It was an era of openness, and when Obama appointed the nation’s first Technology Officer, the stage was set for unprecedented transparent government operations.

GET ON WITH IT Barack spoke to people as he would talk to his own daughters, full of compassion, hope, and wisdom. He shared his philosophy for getting things done, “The future rewards those who press on. I don’t have time to feel sorry for myself. I don’t have time to complain. I’m going to press on.”

And press on he did. During his tenure as President, Barack changed the course of history. Founded on the understanding that those who voted for him were the reason he could be the best President possible, Barack was ‘people empowered.’ In the people’s eyes, Barack Obama came to life.

LEVEL THE PLAYING FIELD Barack’s reverence for his wife, Michelle Obama, and his two daughters, the 44th president of the U.S. and the first African American president, was clearly an advocate for diversity and equality.

Under President Obama, federal prisons declined in population. Solitary confinement was banned for juveniles serving time in federal prison.

Obama historically appointed the first Hispanic woman in the United States to the highest court in the land, the Supreme Court of America. Her name is Sonia Sotomayor.

Obama also saved Medicare by reducing the costs associated with the Medicare program. He issued the executive order to improve access to mental health services for Veterans, Service Members, and Military families. American Veterans’ homelessness was cut in half and reduced by 47% since 2010.

Obama understood diversity before it was in vogue: He appointed the most diverse cabinet to serve the U.S. government in history. On marriage equality, gay couples got all the same options as straight couples.

For the first-time, tobacco manufacturers had to declare what was in the cigarettes they made. It was no surprise to learn there were some 600+ chemicals used to keep people addicted.

ACCESS TO POWER

Obama overturned the ban on research for stem cells advancement which ultimately opened up an entirely new world of medical possibilities.

Before his presidency, Barack Obama was educated as an American attorney, and he understood the power of education to elevate us all. Under President Obama’s administration, he achieved the highest record of high school graduates in American history. The rate hit 83%.

With financial security top of mind, President Obama, during his two-term tenure, turned the economy around and reduced unemployment from 10% to 4.7%. America enjoyed 82 straight months of consecutive job growth, unprecedented considering the volatility of job gains and losses in the country in previous years.

Obama reduced the federal deficit from 9.8 % GDP in 2009 to 3.2 % in 2016.

Obama got tough with banks. Banks now have to take ‘stress tests’ so that they can no longer take down the economy when they collapse because of risky practices.

Banks are also now no longer permitted to use your money to make risky bets for the sake of profit. Barack said, “Food Stamp recipients didn’t cause the financial crisis; recklessness on Wall Street did.”

Under President Obama, your credit card could no longer increase rates without telling you. Companies could no longer fire you because you are gay or trans.

Obama’s administration shut down for-profit-colleges identified as taking student loan money and who unethically failed to deliver an appropriate eduction to people enrolled in thier programs.

HEALTHY LIFESTYLES President Obama was an advocate for health care and human rights, operating from compassion rather than judgment.

WHATEVER WAR CAN DO, PEACE CAN DO BETTER An advocate for peace, Obama worked tirelessly to break down the perils of war and have people understand its dire consequences. He said, “Learning to stand in somebody else’s shoes, to see through their eyes, that’s how peace begins. And it’s up to you to make that happen.”

Only when we shine the light on darkness will things transform to light. When we witnessed fallen soldiers coming home on television, it became evident what the cost of the war was to us all. When the remains of U.S. service members were flown back home, it used to be a secret, and no cameras were allowed. That secrecy order was not only abolished, ensuring the crisis of war to be apparent in every living room but appropriately, the expenses of sending fallen soldiers home were also paid.

The Don’t Ask Don’t Tell ban was repealed in the military, doing away with discriminatory actions in the military, as was the ban on transgender soldiers serving openly.

All combat positions were open to women.

Obama shut down all secret overseas prisons, and he ordered the closure of ‘black sites’ where CIA and European security services have interrogated suspected terrorists under Bush’s orders.

Obama created bi-annual security summits and convinced other nations to get rid of nuclear material.

Under Obama’s administration, Syria agreed to destroy its lethal chemical weapons. The U.S. government banned torture by all U.S. personnel in all circumstances.

A Unites States embassy opened up in Cuba, creating

new relations and normalizing business between the two countries.

OBAMA IN NEWFOUNDLAND Having served two terms in office, Obama’s leadership has empowered not only Americans but people all over the world. We’ve been inspired to no longer accept the status quo and to take things on at a personal level.

Everyone can make a difference, “yes we can.”

Having given so much of his life to serving the public, one might wonder what’s next for such a great leader.

Since leaving office in 2017, Barack Obama has taken some time off, and he has also traveled the world, working to inspire other businesses and association members.

He is said to be writing a book and has committed to developing programs that will make a positive difference in the world.

PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD? You only need to mention Barack Obama’s name to see people’s faces light up with enthusiasm and hope.

He is a great man, and we expect to see a lot more of him as his life with Michelle moves onto foundations of contribution in all its various forms.

While his presidency has completed in the U.S., Barack still iconically looks, feels, and speaks like ‘our president.’

Indeed he is the world’s president. And this is so because of his fairness, truthful demeanour and ultimately his belief in every one of us.

Barack Obama said, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”

ST. JOHN’S BOARD OF TRADE The local business association, The St. John’s Board of Trade, organized Obama’s up-close-and-personal talk to thousands of admiring people in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, at Mile One Stadium.

Obama spoke about climate change, the issues of the internet, false media, globalization, and of course, the audacity of hope.

Accompanied by local entrepreneur Zita Cobb, who was asking all the questions, Barack Obama sat with enthusiastic listeners for about an hour, answering questions and offering solutions, as he most eloquently could.

I was sitting there, taking notes as Obama spoke. What struck me most about this man was his air of calmness and assuredness, not only about the world and its possibilities, but also about who we are as influential individuals who can shape the future ourselves. One person at a time.

Barack’s primary concern for the world right now is climate change, “Climate change is one issue that if we don’t rapidly get at it, then the consequences will be very difficult to reverse. I don’t think there is much left to debate about the facts. There are conversations to have on how we respond.”

Obama expressed the need to understand globalization and all of its challenges and opportunities. He said, “We do not have a handle on how globalization is rapidly

As we look at new energy solutions to save the planet, we are finding ways to innovate and meet world energy demands.

At this stage of our energy history, the smartest thing we can do with oil and gas is to harness it to bridge us to the energy world. The fact remains, oil and gas are the most critical assets to fuel us to a new energy mix. We aren’t getting there without it.

Try to build a wind turbine without petroleum products. Try to erect a solar panel without fuel for transport trucks or petroleum for parts. It’s not going to happen. The new energy model of the next two decades will consist of oil, gas, solar, geothermal, and other sources: some of which we haven’t even thought of yet.

The world is smaller; we are globalizing; information is shared more readily; we are collaborating. All of this bodes well for new energy modalities coming into play.

So, the big question is not, Will we replace fossil fuels with renewable energy? Instead, it is, Will new energy ‘technologies’ save us from both a climate and global energy crisis?

For energy advocates like ABB, Equinor, Total, and Chevron, they are betting that the answer is ‘yes.’ With a $100 million investment in a Joint Industry Project (JIP), these energy innovators, along with the research council of Norway, have embarked on an underwater expedition that is as exciting as man landing on the moon.

UNDER PRESSURE One of the strongest and potentially destructive forces on Earth is pressure. In the underwater world, the deeper you go,

the stronger that pressure becomes. Yet a free diver under hundreds of meters below the surface manages to escape bone-crushing, lung-compressing, blood-squeezing forces.

They defy the laws of nature. As human beings, we challenge Mother Earth continuously. We put planes in the air and people out in space to advance our human experience.

Water pressure, sea conditions, and insurmountable challenges don’t stop the greatest minds on Earth from exploring thousands of meters below the surface. In the underwater world, ABB teams dove deeper and explored further, and now they are building the unthinkable.

INTERNATIONAL PRESS TOUR Believing that operations on the seafloor would improve oil recovery rates for new offshore installations and extend the life of existing fields, ABB pioneers set out to do the impossible, and they have succeeded.

I met and interviewed many of the hands-on people who built the subsea system shallow water prototype. We were given a well-planned tour of the ABB subsea technology test site at the harbour front in Vaasa.

The provided an exciting itinerary of briefings and interviews, as well as our own ABB winter industry coats and boot spikes for the outdoor site-tour ahead. It was exciting; we were the first journalists in the world to witness this energy milestone.

Vice President of Subsea Technology Programs for ABB, Svein Vatland started the press tour by welcoming us all to the event.

He said, “This is like inviting you all to a house warming party.

It’s the place we have been getting ready to show to you for the last number of years and we are excited to share it with you. ABB has become a leading supplier of electrification solutions that operate with little to no maintenance in a highly corrosive ocean environment at deep-sea depths. We are very proud of that.”

It takes a tribe of great minds to build new power systems on the ocean floor. Seven years of planning, poking, prodding, and testing has been the work of the ABB subsea team, to get this right. Subsea power stations may remind you of something out of a sci-fi movie, except it’s not on another planet, it’s under the ocean. And it’s finally happening right here.

and power cells, semiconductors, circuit boards, and capacitors, all come into play.

Testing facilities had to consider every aspect of the operation of the system from not only water pressures and compensation but also thermal performance, equipment reliability, connectivity considerations, materials compatibility, the flexibility of installations, processes, procedures, and, of course, safety.

With 3000 hours of testing completed, the ABB team has proven that the transmission of electrical power on the ocean floor, with a single cable system, is possible for up to 30 years, maintenance-free. This system will generate up to 100 megawatts of power, up to a distance 600 kilometres from shore, 3 kilometres below the surface: depths far below where most life on Earth can survive. And yet they have done it.

EQUIPMENT & OPERATIONS

The project makes economic sense. Subsea power distribution systems will allow oil and gas companies the ability to increase higher recovery rates, reduce production costs, and harness deep water production, especially in remote fields. Predicted savings for oil operators are upwards of $500 million in capital expenditures.

We were introduced to the critical elements, equipment, and procedures of the project. A lengthy development timeline dating back to 2013 marked the beginning of this technological process.

This subsea solution bodes well for areas like offshore Newfoundland, where there are currently four world-class oil projects in operation, and yet 95% of the offshore oil and gas potential is unexplored.

The equipment for the project included subsea modules for controls, power distribution, and power conversion. Subsea products, including transformers, controllers, circuit breakers,

ABB’s Joint Industry Project is slated to be fully operational within the next three years. It is a mind-blowing, future altering, game-changer for energy operations.

With this success achieved, who knows what that might mean for other applications subsea. I look into the future and imagine an underwater hotel powered by a subsea power distribution system. Whales are swimming by my window as I’m working on my computer 1000 meters below the surface.

What do you imagine?

IS ZERO EMISSIONS A POSSIBILITY SUBSEA? After our tour of the Vaasa harbour front testing site, about sixty of us boarded the buses. We headed out to work and enjoyed the scenery of the UNESCO nature world heritage area of Kvarken, Finland.

Here we were escorted to the famous Kalle’s Inn, where you can stay in chalets that look like something out of the movie The Hobbit.

Guests can overnight at Kalle’s Inn, staying in’ glass houses’ and experience a 180-degree view of the stars. You can witness the sea, sky, rocky islands, and northern lights from your bed.

Kalle’s Inn is the place where I experienced many firsts. The first time I have had a world-famous Finnish hot sauna outside in the elements, which was like stepping back in time. The first time I tried Deer for supper, which seemed more natural than I imagined. It was also the first time I met world explorer and Guinness World record holder Eric Larsen and realized that freedom comes from a pioneering spirit.

THE ABB TEAM At Kalle’s Inn, we had the privilege of interviewing some of ABB’s top brass about the project. Per Erik Holsten leads ABB’s Energy Industries business in Northern Europe. His view of the world we now live in, and the project they developed were enlightening. “I have been involved in the industry since the 28 TheOGM.com

1980s up until now, which has been tremendous.

Everyone is becoming more environmentally conscious, which is good. The mentality of the world and the holistic view of things is to be greener and cleaner. Creating environmentally friendly energy is key to us all. We are in an exciting time ensuring everyone on the planet has the power they need and, at the same time, that the energy mix is environmentally friendly. We want to ensure our subsea technology is a contributor to reducing emissions. With the subsea technology that we have developed, we can achieve the ultimate goal of ‘zero emissions.’ That is possible as our oil and gas production on the seafloor can be tied back to a renewable power source on shore. These are the possibilities of the system now and they will become more diverse in the future. We have sustainable new energy solutions that are very exciting,” he said.

Joerg Schubert is the Global Technology Manager of Energy Industries for ABB, has spent 20 years in various roles with ABB. For the last three years, he’s been responsible for overseeing the technology development . He said, “This project had phases of technical challenges which we had to overcome. The people solving those challenges over the years have been critical to our progress. The science and chemistry of our components working in oil, water, and under pressure have been interesting. The pooled intelligence of our people has taken us to success. Aggregating the knowledge needed to overcome challenges was what was required. We broke boundaries and limits that nobody in the world had achieved.

At 3000 meters below the surface, this is a revolutionizing project. I’m very proud to be a part of it.”

The full scope, potential, possibilities, and applications of this milestone are still to be determined. The future may hold a

power mix that will enable us to have wind, solar, geothermal, and other sources of power at sea so that tiebacks to a land source may not be necessary. While we are not there yet, it is imaginable that someday we may have those options available to us.

ERIC LARSEN – WORLD RECORD HOLDING ADVENTURER After a day of intricate details and technological profiling, we were privileged enough to have a dinner presentation by Eric Larsen. An extraordinary guest, Eric is a polar enthusiast and extreme mountain climber. He shared his experiences of ‘snow, cold and ice’ and how he overcome the elements in the harshest conditions in the world.

In 2010, Eric Larsen became the first person in history to complete expeditions to South Pole, North Pole, and the summit of Mount Everest in a continuous 365-day period.

Not unlike creating a revolutionizing technology that will change the world, adventuring to the Poles and Everest hold challenges that have to be solved creatively… or you pay the highest price with your life.

Eric read one of Robert Service’s poems to explain his reasoning for embarking on pioneering experiences in some of the most treacherous places on the planet: Eric scaling the highest mountains and reaching the ends of the earth was much like building ABB’s energy structures deep below the ocean: the naked grandeur apparent, marking maps of void spaces, the wild is calling, calling…let us go. The parallels are striking, the determination palpable.

THE FUTURE WE ARE LIVING INTO With subsea innovation, oil and gas production will be more efficient and greener. With crewless operations on the ocean floor, people will be able to work on land and ultimately have

a higher quality of life and be much safer.

REMOTE CONTROL SYSTEMS WILL BE USED FOR SUBSEA POWER OPERATIONS The ABB subsea power distribution system is predicted to make 30% capital and operations savings over the 30-year lifespan of an oil field. So not only is it a technological feat, but it’s also economically sound.

HEADED HOME On my way home back to Newfoundland, I was a different person having had this experience. I could see possibilities for our energy future that I couldn’t see before. Isn’t that what a pioneering adventure is all about?

On the flight from Helsinki to London, a man eyed my sitetour, ABB winter coat. He didn’t just look at it; he glared at it and said, “Wow, I would give anything to have one of those coats, my wife is going on an expedition to the North Pole.

Where can I get one?”

Understanding the true nature of a pioneering spirit, without hesitation, I gave my ABB coat to him for his wife’s northern adventures. Us cold weather enthusiasts have to help each other out!

OUR GREAT MINDS: ABB Subsea team in Vaasa, Finland I got an email from ABB and it said, “Would you like to come to Vaasa?” I said yes. I went. I learned, and I realized that thanks to the explorers, adventurers, inventors, and innovators like those of the ABB team and the oil companies involved in this collaborative Joint Industry Project, we have an entirely new world ahead of us. They are pioneering spirits whose outstanding work will give us a new energy future.

I’m excited, because the future I see is not only bold and brave; it’s sustainable.

WEST WHITE ROSE

WWR PROJECT UPDATE

The Accommodations Module of the West White Rose Platform Fabricated in Marystown, Newfoundland

Southeast of the capital city, St. John’s, Newfoundland, 350 Kilometres off the coast is the White Rose field. It sits at the edge of the Jeanne d’Arc Basin. Nothing but ocean and skyline, this cold, harsh region of the Grand Banks is a diamond in the fog.

The development of White Rose and its subsequent fields has been the work and vision of Husky Energy (68% partner owner) and its partners Suncor (26%) and Nalcor (5%). White Rose partners have seen nothing but gains from the White Rose project as it has provided oil producing returns from a number of fields in 2005, 2010, and 2015, with much more to come.

The original White Rose field was developed using subsea technology, consisting of three drill centres tied back to a Floating, Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessel. The initial development of the White Rose project utilized a 21-well system that was tied back to the FPSO, meaning oil was pumped up to the seabed surface to drill centers on the ocean floor. From there oil then flowed up through a subsea production system of flow lines that were tied back or connected to the vessel. Since the initial oil production success, three field extensions have produced oil. North Amethyst was the first subsea tieback that started producing oil in May 2010. The South White Rose subsea tieback achieved first oil in June 2015. Both projects produce oil and deliver it back to the SeaRose FPSO. 34 TheOGM.com

The West White Rose project will access further resources to the west of the field, using a fixed drilling rig tied back to the existing SeaRose FPSO. That platform is a mega world-class initiative and is being constructed in Argentia, Newfoundland, right now. First oil is expected in 2022.

The WWR project is a high-tech, world-class mega-project, and it is designed to endure severe offshore Newfoundland weather and water conditions. Its lifetime will span decades in the Atlantic Ocean, 160 meters offshore.

The concrete gravity structure (CGS) has people building it at the Argentia site, working 24/7 around the clock, in all weather conditions to meet timelines and targets.

Progress continues on the West White Rose project, with the overall project approximately 55 per cent complete by the end of 2019.

During the 2019 construction season, workers completed four slipforms on the outer caisson for the concrete gravity structure at the graving dock in Argentia.

Workers also installed the first three interior decks using the ALE crane. During 2020 the inner pedestal will be slipformed to its full height.

Topsides fabrication continues in Ingleside, Texas with installation of major decks through December and January.

In Marystown, the accommodations module is approximately 80% complete.

During 2019, the Kiewit Offshore Services yard in Marystown was also awarded contracts for fabrication of the helideck, lifeboat stations and flare tower.

The project remains on schedule for tow out, commissioning and first production in 2022.

You only need to get up-close and personal with this project to realize it is a phenomenal feat. Taking in its magnitude and beauty, you realize this soon-to-be island in the sea is created by some of the greatest minds on Earth. Our great minds have done it again!

SANDY NAIRN VICE PRESIDENT PROJECT DELIVERY FOR WEST WHITE ROSE ARGENTIA, NEWFOUNDLAND

Sandy is the most likable guy. I think it’s because he’s got such a holistic healthy view of the world and what it takes to succeed within it. Starting his career in architecture, Sandy realized the lucrative opportunities in the North Sea oil business, and he promptly switched his profession after that.

Sandy’s work acumen and performance philosophies grew out of his time spent at the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company (CB&I), where he moved up the ranks by emulating leadership work ethic and performance within that company. CB&I was a large engineering, procurement, and construction company with its administrative headquarters in The Woodlands, Texas.

CB&I employs more than 32,000 people worldwide. Sandy said, “The Superintendents gave us the toughest jobs upfront, and by the time you finish working in all of the various levels at CB&I, you learned to work as hard as any manager or CEO.” Perhaps that’s the key to all successful companies. Ensuring leadership at the level of each individual with the same highly focused work ethic and a laser-sharp commitment to results.

“The longest I’ve been in one place is four years because we have a saying in the industry that the project you worked on last was great, the project you are on now is good, but the project you are going to, is the best of all. So with that philosophy in mind, I was always excited to move onto different projects around the globe in places like Australia, London, and Qatar,” Sandy stated.

“The highlight of my career was moving to Qatar with the oil company Shell, where we developed the Pearl GTL project, which had 55,000 people on site. I’m from a little town in Scotland with 15,000 people, so when you are responsible for managing a village of 55,000 people, it’s sort of unbelievable, Sandy explained. “We built a village to house the workforce long before we started working

on the project. That village had everything from cricket pitches, basketball courts, corner cafes, ATMs, to barbour shops, and more. We spend $2 billion before the project started to build that village. It was an exciting time.”

VP PROJECT DELIVERY: WWR Sandy Nairn is currently the VP of project delivery for the Husky Energy West White Rose project in Argentia, Newfoundland.

His lifetime of knowledge and project management overflows as he talks about the West White Rose initiative and how a ‘holistic’ view IS THE KEY to the success of the project.

As the esteemed speaker of the Placentia Bay Industrial Showcase Luncheon, Sandy had a lot of wisdom to share with participants about work teams and peak performance.

He said, “A healthy environment is a holistic endeavor. Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (HSEQ), is all about ‘healthy’ relationships. It’s about our healthy relationship with contractors, our healthy relationship with ourselves, our healthy relationship with each other, and our healthy relationship with our community. People are goal-oriented, and they want to feel they belong to a team. Once they feel they belong to the team and the vision, then everyone is equal, and everyone has an important part to play on that team, just like sports.”

Sandy explains further, “If you get the ‘HEALTH’ right, you create the foundation for everything else, and the environment is then conducive to success. Once that’s established, safety and the environment happen naturally and become a byproduct of wholistic healthy work culture.”

“We’ve spent our focus on creating a healthy environment on the WWR project. Every morning before we start work, we talk about the tasks of the day, but we also take things to a new level by having our team participate in things like morning aerobics and stretching.

We believe that fit and athletic bodies are healthy and therefore increases performance on-site,” Sandy says. “Our holistic model has contributed to a 10-24% increase in performance compared to other projects in the region, even with the same workforce.

That is the benefit of ‘health’ being the foundation of all other operations.”

“Our philosophy is ‘ONE TEAM.’ We all work together as one unit, and we don’t subscribe to segregation in any way. We provide a healthy environment for our team to work within, and we also empower our workforce to make the project successful. Ultimately it is up to them. We ensure that our safety results come from a very well-thought-out, holistic plan of health and inclusion, and we ensure everything else works from there,” Sandy explained.

Sandy expresses his views on the West White Rose workforce, “I have to say that the Newfoundland workforce is world class.

The people here are fully engaged and open to talking about conditions and the environment. The biggest asset we have is that the workforce is so engaged and committed. I’m excited about working here for the next three years to see out the term of the project. I am very keen about projects, so that’s my passion and focus.”

When Sandy’s mother asked him what he thought of Newfoundland, he said, “I told her that I might well have moved to the village next store in Scotland. They have the same sense of humor and the same sense of lifestyle. Coming here today and speaking here at the symposium, we have ladies from the community coming together and cooking for the community just like they did at this luncheon. Our little aunties would be serving tea and coffee.”

Sandy smiles and remembers, “It feels like home!”

Changing Waste for Good in Newfoundland When most people think about Newfoundland’s offshore oil and gas industry, they likely focus on exciting ventures into exploration, capital investment or production volumes. Drill mud and other industrial wastes aren’t usually top of mind; they don’t seem to capture as much imagination.

Unless you work for Terrapure Environmental, in which case the opposite is true.

Terrapure has been managing offshore oil and gas waste in Newfoundland for more than 20 years.

And as the industry continues to grow, the topic is only getting more interesting, more complex and more meaningful.

The two-step process worked, but the team continued to refine the process.

Today, the company combines a proprietary emulsion-breaking process called “Terrabreak” with thermal desorption for a more efficient and effective result. In essence, what starts as waste drill mud becomes reusable water, reusable oil and ash (which is used as landfill cover). Terrapure is the only company to use this process and eliminate customer waste liability in a matter of days, as opposed to other methods, which take years. Terrapure’s unique approach speaks to the volume of expertise the company has developed over the years.

First to introduce on-island drill mud management When Terrapure started to serve Newfoundland’s offshore oil and gas industry, the common practice was to collect waste and transport it to the mainland. There was no on-island infrastructure to handle drill mud, a by-product of oil and gas drilling, which is a significant waste stream.

It did not take long to realize shipping waste was not sustainable, efficient or cost effective.

So Terrapure invested in finding a new, on-island solution.

The company started by treating drill mud with chemically aided centrifugation, using chemicals and gravity to break down the mud into oil, solids and water. But Terrapure realized that the oil content in the remaining solids was still high enough to require post-treatment, so it expanded the process by adding a bioremediation operation.

Acquiring to expand In Newfoundland, Terrapure has the only site permitted to receive small format and bulk hazardous waste from oil and gas customers. It is also the only company to have a permit to receive Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM)contaminated waste, as well as trained personnel to survey contaminated pipes on offshore platforms.

What can the industry expect? Three things.

But being the only one to offer something isn’t enough, especially when there are more needs to be met. To expand its service offerings, Terrapure acquired Envirosystems Inc., which added a deep expertise in industrial services, the full scope of industrial cleaning equipment (e.g. vacuum trucks and vacuum tankers), and a specialized pier for faster turnaround times.

For offshore oil and gas customers, Terrapure can now offload the contents of vessel tanks, clean the tanks quickly and process the waste – all on island.

For even more convenient service, Terrapure modified its vacuum trucks to be acoustically compliant with St. John’s bylaws, which allows it to operate 24/7 in the port in downtown St. John’s.

Looking ahead Just because Terrapure handles the vast majority of the island’s offshore oil and gas waste management needs does not mean it’s time to rest on laurels.

Terrapure is continuing to improve its services and expand its expertise.

First, Terrapure is working on projects to process even more industrial waste on the island.

Second, it wants to reduce manned entries into vessel tanks through automated cleaning. Every time someone enters a vessel tank, it is a risk, and Terrapure is actively looking to reduce the frequency of those risks.

Finally, the company is ramping up efforts to live its brand promise of Changing Waste for Good.

For example, Terrapure started diverting oilcontaminated plastic debris from landfill and sending it to be reused to manufacture composite deck boards. For customers, this focus means they can expect solutions that reduce waste, improve operational efficiency and recover value from waste streams.

As the only company that can manage all oil and gas waste streams in Newfoundland, Terrapure is proud to be a part of this industry. Industrial waste might never make it into dinner conversations, but rest assured that it’s being handled locally, effectively and sustainably.

THE NEXT BIG PLAY BAY DU NORD Equinor has been active in Canada since 1996 and operates in the Flemish Pass Basin 500 kilometres Offshore Newfoundland. Three significant light oil discoveries have shown promise and profitability and an estimated 300 million barrels of oil.

The development concept for the Bay du Nord project is a subsea installation tied back to a floating production unit (FPSO) for storage and offshore offloading to shuttle tankers with the first oil being produced by 2025.

seek early involvement with suppliers and the intention is to select key contractors start of Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED). For the Subsea Umbilical Flowline and Riser (SURF), there will be an Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Installation (EPCI) strategy with one SURF contract covering all subsea equipment and installation activities. Equinor continues to mature the procurement and execution strategy for the FPSO towards start of FEED. The Turret & Mooring system (TMS) and the Safety and Automation System (SAS) will be separate contracts.

According to Equinor, the project benefits to the people and Province are enormous, consisting of: •

Generate about $3.5 billion in revenues to the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

•

Provide estimated in-province employment of 22.3 millionperson hours for the life-of-field (11,000 person-years).

•

Provide a minimum in-province fabrication of 5,000 metric tonnes related to Bay du Nord and Baccalieu within a competitive bid framework.

•

Make a multi-million-dollar investment in a large-scale steel roller to be used to manufacture suction anchors for moorings.

•

Develop 'Gender Equity and Diversity Plan' for all phases of the project.

•

Establish an integrated operations centre to support efficient, safe and compliant operations.

•

Create a supply and service opportunities forum.

•

Cost approximately CAD 10.9 billion (estimate the life of field).

•

Invest a minimum CAD 75 million over ten years in research and development and engineering and technology to position Newfoundland and Labrador as a globally-recognized deepwater centre of excellence.

PROCUREMENT OPPORTUNITIES: BAY DU NORD

The Bay du Nord project is currently in the concept development phase. Several concept studies have been previously awarded within the subsea area and the FPSO area. These have been followed by pre-FEED studies. The pre-FEED study contractors have been TechnipFMC and Subsea 7/One Subsea for the SURF and Kværner/Aker and Kiewit/Wood for the FPSO/topside area.

One of the key selection criteria for contracts awarded to date has been the knowledge and experience of working with local Newfoundland and Labrador-based requirements. The plan is to select main contractors and award contracts for FEED with option for execution within both the SURF area and the FPSO area.

Equinor strongly supports building local capacity, and they will prioritize goods and services from suppliers within the province wherever possible. The procurement strategy is to

BHP: DRILLING TO COMMENCE

BHP has been successful in its bids to acquire a 100% participating interest in, and operatorship of, two exploration licences for blocks 8 and 12 in the offshore Orphan Basin in Eastern Canada.

BHP Petroleum (New Ventures) Corporation (BHP) plans to undertake a drilling program in the Orphan Basin Region, offshore eastern Newfoundland and Labrador (Exploration licenses EL1157 and EL1158). It is anticipated that the initial campaign will consist of two wells, approximately twelve months apart. Subject to regulatory approval, drilling activity is anticipated to begin between July 2021 and July 2022. Accordingly, BHP seeks Expressions of Interests from interested contractors who can demonstrate the capability to deliver the following goods and services.

Geraldine Slattery BHP President Operations Petroleum believes the successful bids are an exciting opportunity for BHP to explore for world-class conventional oil assets as an early mover in this prospective region.

This frontier opportunity has large oil resource potential which we identified through our Global Petroleum Endowment Study in 2016 and is in a low risk country with competitive fiscal terms.

This opportunity delivers on BHP’s exploration focus in conventional petroleum and will leverage their global deepwater development and operational expertise.

BHP’s aggregate bid amount of US$625 million covers the drilling and seismic work required by the exploration work programs under the licence agreements over the six-year term.

BHP’s minimum commitment under the licence agreements is for US$157 million.

NEWFOUNDLAND GOT GAS NATURAL GAS: IT’S IN DEMAND

With the current rate of natural gas production and known natural gas reserves, we have an estimated 52.8 years worth of natural gas reserves left. It is believed that we will still have gas and coal left by the time oil runs out in 2052. But if we increase gas production to fill the energy gap left by oil, then those reserves will only give us an additional eight years, taking us to 2060. So we can say that the smartest thing we can do with oil and gas is use it to bridge us to new energy.

NATURAL GAS IS CLEANER

Natural gas releases up to 50% less CO2 than coal and 20-30% less than oil, when it is burned. So it’s a better fossil fuel than any other. Natural gas offers a significant contribution to improved local air quality and public health overall so it’ makes sense to develop it as an energy solution.

NATURAL GAS OFFSHORE NEWFOUNDLAND

There are an estimated 200 trillion cubic feet of gas potential offshore Newfoundland, and it’s the provincial plan to have natural gas plays moving by 2030.

According to Minister of Natural Resources, Siobhan Coady, “The resource potential in our offshore is incredible. In just 9% of our offshore, we have a combined resource potential of 52.2 Bbbl oil and 199.6 Tcf gas. We have over 650 leads and prospects identified to date, eight new entrants in the past three years, and $4 billion in recent exploration work commitments. We will continue to position our province as an internationally preferred location for oil and gas exploration and development.”

Building on over 20 years of oil production success and an ongoing world-leading seismic program that has been shedding new insights on the nearly two dozen basins that surround the province, offshore Newfoundland and Labrador is poised for an exciting new round of exploration and development.

To date, offshore Newfoundland oil production has been oil, yet gas remains a strong possibility. Oil fields offshore Newfoundland have consistently been one, two, three, four, five, even six times bigger than original estimates. If gas follows suit, we could be in for highly prosperous times.

Offshore Newfoundland currently has four world-class producing fields and two more about to come on stream.

West White Rose and Equinor’s Bay du Nord, deepwater play, are forecasted to be producing wells within the next five years.

Given that natural gas is a cleaner energy source and the gas offshore Newfoundland is virtually untapped, there are strong reasons to focus on it. Offshore Newfoundland, most of the gas can be conveniently found in less than 200 metres of water. The resource base can support a worldscale project, and theoretically, gas projects could yield 2 million tonnes per year. This offshore gas opportunity could quite easily come together if industry players collaborate, share information, and infrastructure to develop it.

With 43 wells approved to drill and over 100 exploratory wells to be drilled over the next decade, things are bound to boom. The development of the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador’s ‘Way Forward’ plan has a strong commitment to natural gas development as a low carbon fuel solution.

With the discovery of additional resources, market opportunities, and anticipated natural gas, the future looks bright. The provincial commitment is to advance initiatives to ensure industry readiness for gas commercialization, including regulation, development models, local supply opportunities, and labour requirements. As well, the focus of attracting global investment for commercial gas production is a priority.

By 2030, the long-term priorities of commercial natural gas production are evident. The province will promote

OFFSHORE NEWFOUNDLAND: PEAK DRILLING 2020-2025

Canada’s production and delivery of oil products, natural gas and electricity contributes about $170 billion to Canada’s GDP. The energy industry is one of the most important contributors to Canada’s economy and provides the foundation for our health care, education, and other social services in the country. According to Natural Resources Canada: •

In 2018, Canada’s energy sector directly employed more than 269,000 people and indirectly supported over 550,500 jobs.

Canada’s energy sector accounts for over 11% of nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Government revenues from energy were $14.1 billion in 2017.

More than $799 million was spent on energy research, development, and deployment by governments in 2017-18.

Canada is the sixth largest energy producer, the fifth largest net exporter, and the eighth largest consumer.

OIL AND GAS WILL BRING IN RENEWABLE ENERGY Renewable energy is also extremely important, and it’s oil and gas that’s going to get us there. The new energy mix will see renewables rise as well as oil and gas production increases. Together they will make up our new energy future.

Based on energy demand, Canada’s Energy Future predicts that we will have increases in the production of crude oil and natural gas from 2018 to 2040. Crude oil production will grow by nearly 50%, to around seven million barrels per day. Natural gas will increase by over 30%, to over 20 billion cubic feet per day. That translates to massive opportunity for Canadians and it is the critical baseline of infrastructure needed for renewable energy success.

MORE DRILLING = MORE OIL DISCOVERY The more oil wells drilled offshore Newfoundland, the higher the probability of finding oil. So the answer to Eastern Canada’s prosperity in terms of energy is simple: drill more!

In the past, we have had the problem of not reaching our drilling potential because of extremely slow environmental approval processes. Processes which often take four times longer than they should an in extreme cases are up up to 10 times slower than other places in the world. When environmental assessment approvals take too long, oil companies will decide to invest in other regions where they can go from oil exploration to discovery much faster. Places like Guyana for example.

It’s not anybody’s fault that these processes were long. It stemmed from the strong committment to a safe and environmentally conscious way forward. Today we have the challenge of ensuring both faster exploration time frames and the highest environmental stewardship take place simultaneously. These are the tasks of the day and the challenge of the provincial and federal governments combined.

ENVIRONMENTAL ASSESSMENT TO BE FASTER Speeding up environmental approvals in Newfoundland and Labrador is the key to ensure drilling offshore Newfoundland meets its potential.

That and having more skin in the game. For example, Canada could be more like Norway and be a primary investor in its oil and gas resources.

Norway has had upwards of 60% equity shares in many of its North Sea projects which have also led to them becoming the strongest nation on Earth with a $trillion+ trust fund. This fund is not only the foundation of the country’s prosperity, but it is the most powerful asset they have for bringing in renewable energy. They can afford to do so.

The good news is environmental assessment protocol in Canada is about to change. To be globally competitive and environmentally responsible at the same time, Canada’s new approach will be more like other successful oil and gas offshore regions of the world. For example, Norway’s offshore drilling environmental assessment process usually takes an average of 90 days. In Australia, it’s about 110 days. Comparatively Offshore Newfoundland’s has been 900 + days.

Offshore Newfoundland drilling assessment processes are being transformed from red tape and too many cooks in the kitchen to a more streamlined environmental assessment regime, which is predicted to be less than a year. That’s huge! Not only will that make offshore Newfoundland globally attractive to oil companies to set up shop and drill here, but it will also most likely put us at the top of the list of places to invest in the world, given the nature of our stable economy and government infrastructure.

The old model offshore Newfoundland of taking 905 days for an exploration well to be approved, is thankfully dead and gone. Everyone recognizes it is simply not sustainable. We finally all agree! How refreshing.

Today, it’s clear that stakeholders in the oil and gas industry in eastern Canada are committed to speeding up environmental assessments so that oil companies will be far more excited to drill and explore in the region.

That’s extremely good news for Offshore Newfoundland given that we currently have 43 exploration wells approved to drill offshore, and new approval processes in play, we can predict an offshore drilling boom in 2021-25.

With our offshore oil drilling-to-discovery ratio of 1 discovery to every 7 wells drilled, I predict the opportunities offshore Newfoundland will not only bring new oil discoveries, but there will be a hotbed of activity where exploration and discovery numbers for oil and gas will double if not quadruple over the next decade.

A SUSTAINABLE NEW ENERGY FUTURE Currently, oil and gas are 25% of Newfoundland and Labrador’s overall GDP. It’s one of the most important assets in our bailiwick. With the new investment, exploration drilling, oil discoveries, and growth, that number

will rise and bring with it a lucrative future for our province and our kids futures. Most importantly, it will address climate change with low-impact operations and new energy regimes coming into play. This, in turn, will pave the way for a sustainable new energy future which the entire world needs.

Norway is the world’s largest supplier of salmon, so if there’s any country that can teach us precisely how it is done, it’s Norway.

Last year Norway exported 100 Billion NOK of Salmon to the world. It’s lucrative and life-defining for the country. Norway’s fish farms are strictly regulated to meet rigorous environmental approvals as well as quality and food safety requirements, ensuring their aquaculture industry is consumer safe and highly lucrative at the same time.

They see what nobody else saw. This describes visionary Paul Antle.

I met Paul in my junior high school days as a kid beating around Dunfield Street in St. John’s, NL. He was a smart, friendly young man with a soft way about him.

Written in Paul’s DNA is an undercurrent that binds us all together here on this island: our love for our people and our province. That’s part of what makes him a great entrepreneur.

Since our early days on Dunfield Street up until today, Paul has had a valuable path of continuous learning, having graduated from MUN, UNB, and, most recently, Harvard Business School.

The beginning of Paul’s entrepreneurial days began back in the late 1980s. Since then, he has built many companies and 54 TheOGM.com

has built a small empire. He is the owner of Pluto Investments, which is the holding company for; the St. John’s Dockyard, Humber Motors Ford, Avalon Laboratories, and others.

Most recently, Paul and his partners purchased the Marystown Shipyard and launched Marbase, a fully integrated aquaculture service hub focused on strengthening the supply chain and service sector for the aquaculture industry in Newfoundland and Labrador.

HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL When asked what it was like going to Harvard, Paul explained, “In 2000, I sold one of my core businesses and began looking for other opportunities. After somewhat of a dry spell, I started to doubt whether I had all the skills I needed to succeed in business both domestically and internationally. So, I applied to an executive education program at the Harvard Business School and was accepted. Looking back, Harvard was one of the most challenging things I’d ever done, but it was also one of the most rewarding. Harvard forced me to look critically at my strengths and my weaknesses. To continuously carry out a self-assessment of who I was, my purpose, my goals, my vision for the business. It was rigorous and rewarding.”

“Harvard gave me more tools I needed to make better decisions and improve how I do business; Tools that built my confidence in finance, planning, and strategy. My clarity became crisp, my understanding greatly expanded, and my perspective on business changed immensely. I have always been independent in my business career. Still, Harvard put me on a higher plane of understanding with an enhanced perspective enabling me to take on more challenges and opportunities,” Paul explained.

Paul’s business focus at Harvard, set in a strong foundation of ethics, integrity and fairness are so important. I quickly learned that the best deals in business are the ones where everyone wins, and everyone walks away happy. Harvard solidified the way I wanted to conduct business, and that corresponded with my family values as well.”

Paul has a vision for the Newfoundland fishery saying, “Aquaculture can be huge for our province, given its positive economic impact on our rural communities. There has been no better opportunity to reverse the flow of outmigration while creating sustainable employment for generations to come.

Many of the communities around Newfoundland were built on the fishery, and now they can be rebuilt with fish farming.

The opportunities are enormous.”

PLUTO + AMAR GROUP To avail of the aquaculture opportunity in the province, Paul’s company, Pluto Investments, created a business partnership with Amar Group of Norway.

Paul built a stable relationship with well-known aquaculture entrepreneur Bjorn Apeland. Apeland was a perfect partner because he created one of the world’s most significant aquaculture products and service companies, which is a leader in fish farming technology in Norway.

Paul explains, “Together with Amar group; we purchased the Marystown Shipyard with a unique vision to support aquaculture supply and service. We are creating the world’s first integrated aquaculture service hub. This aquaculture hub will supply, service, and support aquaculture farmers in the province and possibly across Atlantic Canada. We will create hundreds of direct and indirect sustainable jobs in Marystown, the Burin Peninsula, and throughout the province.”

They are the biological weapon against sea lice, effectively reducing pesticide use in salmon farming.

Paul says, “The Lumpfish hatchery will be a land-based facility in Marystown, and hopefully it will be up and running by late 2020. We have targeted the first delivery of Lumpfish to farmers by 2021. The Lumpfish facility has a flow-through system with water temperature control that provides more control over the growth of the Lumpfish. The yearly production of Lumpfish is expected to start at 2 million Lumpfish with a capacity of up to 5 million.

Sludge produced by the facility will be collected and processed internally at the site. Paul’s 25 years of experience in the waste management industry will serve Marbase well as new technology and processes are implemented to bring an optimal product to the market while minimizing environmental impact.

AQUACULTURE IS A LUCRATIVE OPPORTUNITY Every Newfoundland outport should be looking at the

grassroots opportunity related to fish farming in their region. It’s going to be one of the world’s globalizing forces as the demand for fish increases with an increasing global population.

In Norway, aquaculture has surpassed wild fisheries. The Norwegian Seafood Council estimates Atlantic salmon exports make up about 70% of the nation’s total seafood exports and that 14 million meals of Norwegian Salmon are served every day in over 100 countries.

It’s all relationship-based. Good people who have direction and the tools they need can accomplish a great deal.”

“At this stage in my career and life, there is nothing more I would like than to help revitalize our rural communities; to help them become a destination rather than a place of departure. Imagine rural people building new homes, starting new businesses, and raising young families; the aquaculture industry can be that revitalizing force,” Paul says enthusiastically.

Lee Shinkle: Speaking to a group of about 400 people, Lee delivered a heartwarming and insightful story. A story that would make you laugh, make you cry and most of all, inspire you to carry on to Act 2 of our great industry. Given the drilling programs ahead, who knows …. we might just be the next North Sea! Here’s what Lee said at the NOIA awards luncheon: “Thank you all for this award. Peer recognition is the best recognition of all. Thank you to NOIA as well for organizing and triumphing recognition of people in all stages of their careers.

I was told I could talk for as long as I wanted… but, I’ve been on your side of this podium for many years, so I’ll stick to a few highlights of what has been a very wild ride, and I’ll hold some details for a book I’m thinking of writing. I’ll finish with a resume of everything I have learned in the last 40 years.

I finished college in 1972 with a BA in History and English.

Having no prospects and nothing to do, my uncle, Andrew Crosbie, suggested he would hire me at Crosbie Insurance and send Martha and I to London to learn about Marine and Aviation insurance. After a precise, in-depth, and critical analysis of the question our decision was why not?”

We returned to St. John’s in 1975 with our first daughter Malindi, and I was immediately attracted to the oil industry. In particular, I was captivated by what all that expensive offshore exploration activity could mean for the insurance business.

In 1978, I was sent to Calgary to set up Crosbie Insurance West and chase Arctic oil exploration insurance business, Dome Petroleum, Panarctic Oil and others. a customer. Dick came to Calgary, we approached Mobil Oil together, and lo and behold we signed the first vessel charter.

I can assure you, a legendary party ensued, and it would become the perfect kick-off to the next maniacal five years.

Industry Leader, Advisor Scholar and Great Story Teller Martha and I and our first three children returned home in 1980 and immediately got into the offshore marine insurance business. It wasn’t long before Jan Furst from Nordco came calling looking for volunteers to help revitalize NOIA and to create a growth strategy.

I agreed to become the Secretary-Treasurer, and in my first full year, our financial report showed income of $3,500 and expenses of $2,500 leaving a surplus of $1,000 to start NOIA’s sovereign wealth fund. Too bad the Government wasn’t following NOIA’s wise example!

The following three years were filled with excitement and promise. The malt whiskey flowed, and tonnages of smoked salmon were ordered. Local investment manager Tom Foran recently told me that at that time the power of our exploration drilling program could literally move Mobil Oil’s stock price.

People would line up at Tom’s office in the morning to give him money to buy Mobil options hoping to make their fortunes!

This financial frenzy, which led to a lot of heartbreak, should have been warning enough that the bloom might be coming off the rose. However, when the Ocean Ranger sank in February 1982, the dangers of the industry we were involved in really came into sharp focus.

Not long after, things began to fall apart for the industry.

The weather and ice issues manifested, the PIP program ran out, the Federal and Provincial governments went to war over jurisdiction of the resource, and the oil price collapsed.

Exploration evaporated, companies closed, trained employees left, and there were plenty of people crying doom and gloom.

But a steady group of dedicated enthusiasts continued to believe in the future of the industry. I am proud to be numbered amongst them. We believed we needed to keep the momentum going, to keep lobbying politicians, and to keep encouraging the owner companies and Tier 1 contractors.

Year after year, we would trek off to OTC and Offshore Europe waving the flag and repeating our mantra “Soon… we’ll be there soon”. We could also see that the Americans and Europeans were attracting a lot of attention to their regions with their conferences. So, with essentially no industry to

speak of, we had the confidence to start a conference of our own. And people came!

Suffice it to say, the true believers were a pretty cocky bunch.

We believed we were “so smart” about what was to come. A group of about 10 of us had a Breakfast Club. There are a few here today; Rob Strong, Fraser Edison, Pat Stamp.

We would meet most Friday’s for breakfast and to exchange gossip but the main event was once a year, near Christmas, we would have a prediction contest as to what would happen in the coming year in the industry, with the prize being the ceremonial beer mug but more importantly bragging rights.

There were usually ten categories and the person who got the highest tally, as agreed at the following year’s lunch, got to keep the mug for a year.

Clearly, this was serious stuff! Given that these guys should have had the best sources of information, you would think it would take 7 or 8 right answers to win the beer mug.

Not a chance. The whole business of predicting what will happen in the offshore, even one year out, is so uncertain that our winner would be lucky to get 2 or 21/2 out of 10.

By the late 1980s, I was personally having a crisis of belief in the future. So I retrained as a stockbroker and got a job on Bay Street in Toronto. Proudly announcing this to Martha, she smiled and responded that she hoped I would be happy there and able to send home lots of money since she wasn’t leaving Newfoundland. There was no point arguing… she told me I’d just have to try harder here.

Regardless of my scepticism, progress was being made. The Federal Government won the ownership battle, decided to share jurisdiction with the Province, and ultimately the Atlantic Accord was signed.

The negotiations continued with the Hibernia ownership consortium, and the Federal Government continued to sweeten the pot with inducements.

And the one thing that was is, and forever will be out of our control, the oil price, looked to be recovering.

deal was signed, and the first construction contracts were awarded. More legendary parties ensued, and the malt whiskey and smoked salmon returned.

So, the time was obviously right to once again get fully committed to the offshore. Local entrepreneur Harold Wareham had convinced me to leave the insurance business and head up a contract R&D company called Instrumar. As part of the deal, Steve Henley and I got Harold to back us in an offshore supply company called AMI Offshore. We then artfully convinced my brother Matt to leave his secure government job to chase oil riches with us. So the smart guys were ready to rake it in. But just two weeks after Matt left his job, Gulf pulled out of the Hibernia consortium. Our only client was now on hiatus.

The cheque book had left the province! Smart guys zero, oil industry carries on as usual.

We all know the story of how the project got put back together.

The group of us true believers were front and centre whipping up industrial support across the country and tormenting anyone who would listen about the importance of making it happen.

So, Hibernia finally did happen. We started to make some money on the construction project.

At AMI we listened to others about where the future might take us. In particular, Wes Abel, Mobil’s local lead, clearly stated to the industry that the real success would come to those companies that learned that the real economic opportunity was in operations and maintenance. Better a dollar a day forever than $100 once in a while. Our focus shifted to operations.

I took on the challenge of leading AOC Canada, a joint venture of Aberdeen based AOC and Toronto based Bracknell, set up to pursue the initial Hibernia operations and maintenance contract. A hard battle was fought, but we were victorious in the end. Hurray more legendary parties!

After the award, I asked Bill Fanning, who was with Hibernia at the time, what our secret sauce was, thinking there must have been something really special about what we did that enabled us to win. Bill told me the competitors were both pretty much the same, but we tried harder!

Gradually, over the next decade, the local supply sector evolved into what you see today. Lots of mergers and acquisitions, but pretty much the same folks chasing the same contracts as the additional projects got built and the market expanded.

Crosbie Group bought into AMI and eventually bought the whole company. But to be honest, the real long-term success for our family didn’t arrive until the early 1990s when Crosbie Group founded a joint venture with Salamis out of Aberdeen to provide maintenance and deck services. We gained an equity foothold in business we could manage for ourselves, here at home.

Crosbie Salamis was our chance to realize the dream we had been chasing since the mid-1970s when Andrew Crosbie had the vision to get us all worked up about the possibilities that 60 TheOGM.com

the offshore industry offered the people of this province. The dream that we were going to be more than strictly the local labour, that we were going to be ongoing contributors to the industry and that we could translate our business success into giving back to our communities. For me, Crosbie Salamis is a leading beacon of the dream that we were all sold at the very beginning.

What started out initially as an experiment in skills and technology transfer has grown into one of the province’s largest locally owned and operated companies in the industry. We eventually bought out our partner Salamis in a friendly transaction, and now we have completed the circle by partnering up in Guyana in the hopes of being, for our partner in Guyana, what Salamis was to us.

I’ve been reflecting a lot since learning of this award a few weeks ago. Looking back, through all the ups and downs, we have collectively built an industry with four producing projects, with major expansions and asset life extensions and cash flow expected for the next 25 years. We have a new project in the hopper moving towards sanction. We have the largest combined exploration drilling commitment we have ever seen. We have many new global companies chasing our subsea oil wealth. We are better at managing risks than we have ever been. And our local supply community is knowledgeable, passionate, and poised to take its place on the world stage.

It sounds to me like Act 1 is over. Act 2 is starting with the next wave of exploration, and it will be up to all of you to bring it to fruition for the benefit of this wonderful place we call home.

Look around this room, and you see the next wave of leaders and believers. It’s particularly gratifying that two of my own children, Malindi Shinkle and Jessica Banfield, both of whom are here today at the Exxon table, went straight from college into long-term, challenging careers in our industry.

I have enjoyed this wild ride enormously, but let me be crystal clear. For me, none of it would have been possible without the love, support, and the outright refusal to move to Toronto 30 years ago, of my wife Martha, and our children Malindi, Geoffrey, Jessica, and David. Thank you to all of you, from the bottom of my heart.

With that, I will finish up by passing on a few short pearls of wisdom that I have learned during Act 1, and that I hope you carry with you into Act 2: Firstly: there’s no one in charge.

Secondly: no one knows what is going to happen next which is why it’s so exciting.

Thirdly: you have to keep trying harder.

And lastly: you have to make sure to have lots of legendary parties!

Teekay Atlantic Management Donates Ship’s Bridge Simulator To Centre For Marine Simulation Fisheries and Marine Institute

The Centre for Marine Simulation at the Marine Institute received a welcome gift from Teekay (Atlantic) Management ULC. Teekay donated a ship bridge simulator, providing a generous contribution to support the students of the Marine Institute.

The offshore industry was gathered at the Marine Institute to celebrate the momentous event and included industry stakeholders and special guests from Teekay’s Stavanger office in Norway. This generous multi-million dollar ships bridge simulator, provides 360 visuals and a ‘near-life’ representation of conditions at sea. Marine students will learn to navigate weather, tidal, iceberg, and wave conditions that may impact vessel performance, giving them a distinct advantage navigating treacherous waters.

Captain Chris Hearn, Director for the Centre for Marine Simulations, says, “The technology represents the bridge of the ship and provides competency assurance for Teekay fleets operating on the grand banks. The control systems, the monitors, the displays, the visual system, and the advanced physics engine of modeling captures the look and feel of the reality of these ships and the equipment on board. It’s an important resource to the growth, the longevity of our offshore industry, and the supply of highly skilled personnel to safely and efficiently operate these shuttle tankers.”

ENERGY ADDICTION the reason for climate change

Climate change is the result of the rising temperature of the planet. It’s happening because populations are rising, pollution is rising, and we have an insatiable appetite for agriculture and energy.

Greenhouse gases, like methane, are produced through agricultural practices, including livestock manure. Others, like CO2, come from natural processes like respiration and from the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil, and gas. All of which contribute to climate change.

how about coming together and merging commonalities in the interest of a solid plan for the planet? What if we turned concerns into opportunities? Use opposition as a path to solutions. Create differences as a place to build new structures of unity. Sound a little too altruistic?

Merging perspectives will most probably be the fastest, most economical way to create a new energy sustainable world. We are globalizing. We need to think global. What affects one affects all. Now that’s a conversation worth having.

Climate change is partially a human appetite issue. We are not settling for a life of moderation. We don’t want to be normal, average or mediocre; we want two or three cars, ten trips, and who cares how many cows we eat and how much fuel we use.

It’s the oil and gas industry that has catapulted us into the industrial era and modernized our world. The industrial era gave way to the new digital economy we now have. All come with progress and with a price.

It’s convenient to blame the oil companies for global warming, but as everybody knows, blame is usually what happens when we refuse to look at ourselves. The reality is that most everyone on the planet is contributing to climate change by virtue of our unwillingness to live minimally and moderate consumption.

It’s easy to see that with every advance of humankind, there is an opposing negative impact as well. While cars are one of our most significant advances in human history, there are still impacts and failures with cars. People die in car accidents every day, and the environmental impact of vehicles is unprecedented. But we don’t stop driving our cars; we progress and mitigate risk. That’s also true of the oil and gas industry. We don’t stop oil and gas production; we continue while we mitigate risks and utilize it to bring in new energy like wind, solar, geothermal and more.

OIL AND GAS The consideration of oil and gas as a valuable commodity has many angles of debate. Some believe oil and gas will be the primary source of energy for another 50 years and nothing will be more effective at meeting world energy demand. Others believe we should eliminate oil and gas for other cleaner sustainable fuel sources. Some think that the smartest thing we can do with oil and gas is use it to bridge us to a new energy future.

Oil is the foundation of our world. It’s the most sought-after commodity on the planet because it is in everything we have and do. From the phone in your hand, to the gas in your car, to the clothes on your back. The petroleum industry saturates it all.

As an energy nation, our focus has to be on a safe environment

THERE IS NO PLANET B

and people. The oil and gas industry in Canada is already extremely good at that. Canadian oil companies and their subcontractors in the offshore oil industry are among the top environmental and safety stewards in the world. That is a fact.

We have insurance to protect us from car accidents knowing there will be accidents. We need to have that same level of knowledge, understanding, and acceptance of the oil and gas industry and its operations and limitations. Otherwise, we are working against ourselves, trying to eliminate oil and gas. It is that which sustains us and our current way of life.

Canada’s the world’s 4th largest producer of oil. Because of oil and gas, we have enjoyed prosperous economic conditions and oil and gas has been the foundation of Canada’s economy.

What happens to our entire economic system if we take that down? Have we thought it all through? The world won’t work without oil and gas. Canada won’t work without oil and gas.

You only have to look at the last 32 months in Canada to see the results of the oil price collapse. 40,000 + job layoffs meant a socioeconomic impact that was unprecedented and staggering. People need purpose and focus in life, and the oil and gas industry, directly and indirectly, has been a strong foundation for many Canadians in this regard.

We don’t want to lose the strong foundation that oil and gas provides, and end up with extreme socioeconomic problems that affect each of us right here at home. Impacts like cuts in education, health, and other social programs. Socioeconomic impacts like a rise in addiction, spousal abuse, suicide, and mental illness, all of which we have seen on the rise in the last few years across Canada, especially in oil and gas regions. Is that a coincidence?

What’s Canada worth without oil? How can we even think about getting to new energy without oil? The reality is, there is no new energy without the support of oil and gas.

We need to be educated, share information, elevate our youth and utilize current media as a channel for progress and unified growth. The answers begin there...

Like it or not, life’s comforts always come with some setbacks.

Sometimes environmental and, in extreme cases, just like car accidents, sadly the loss of life. That will also occur in the new energy regimes as well. There will be an environmental impact with clean energy as there is with other industrial sectors.

Let’s drop the fingerpointing and be pro-active with an all-inclusive new energy mix. One that unites differing perspectives and solves the challenges of the day. Those most pressing like climate change. It starts with listening to each other and being open to many views. It’s an inclusive model.

What we know for sure is that oil and gas companies will be world leaders in building a new energy future. They have the funds to do so. They are in the energy business and will continue by adapting new innovation and technology to the times. Collaboration, information sharing, digitalization and advances in technology will all play a part in creating the future of energy, so let’s elevate each other in the name of progress.

Nature didn’t make geographical boundaries, mankind did. So let’s take down those boundaries and think on behalf of the planet. Think without walls, without regions, without countries, and most of all without judgement. All the answers are in nature. Look to her to find our way.

You know the name, you know the company – it’s even become a verb at this point. Everyone understands when you tell them to ‘Google’ it. The company is a real anomaly.

It has almost no physical product to sell; there are only about one hundred thousand employees, yet it’s the fourth biggest company in the world.

Their market value is currently $858 billion. For businesses, Google is a powerful inspiration. Understanding just how the company functions and the incredible success it enjoys is a massive motivation for your own endeavours.

We’ve broken down the facts and figures of the world of Google to help you understand what it takes to make a business truly great. Dealing in the information business, Google was first established in 1998.

It wasn’t until 2010 that the company developed physical hardware to sell. In the first decade of existence, their impressive growth was due to one thing, the sharing of information. The company is the most prominent web business that deals mostly in online transactions.

The amount of revenue they boast comes largely from the popularity of the platform as a search engine. Two trillion searches a year occur on Google. These astonishing figures are only more impressive when they’re broken down. We’re talking five billion searches per day or 228 million every hour. Google may be the jewel in Alphabet’s crown, but it has many other big-name players under its belt. They also own YouTube, which is another profit driver. Other than this, their endeavors are more experimental. They’ve dabbled in self-driving cars and even urban planning ideas.

Alphabet makes a profit of $30 billion per year. The money Alphabet makes from Google and YouTube is huge. This profit gives them the power to snap up promising startups and work at the forefront of innovation in tech.

Their business model is set up to provide them with the freedom to experiment with smaller grassroots products and ideas.

Alphabet has far too many subsidiaries to list, but there are a few that drive more profit than any of the others. Many see the following as branches of Google, but they’re so much more than that.

Gmail currently boasts 1.5million active users, 27% of email opens occurs in Gmail accounts. Gmail AI blocks 100 million spam emails every day.

GOOGLE MAPS

Released in 2005, Google Maps has become a staple in all of our lives. No matter where you are in the world, it’s likely you’ll have opened the app to navigate or find a destination.

The most surprising this about Google Maps is the sheer size of the platform. It’s hard to imagine, but keeping data about most corners of the Earth is a huge ask.

Google Maps is made up of an impressive 20 petabytes of information. 13% of Google searches occur in Maps.

CHROME

Since its release in 2008, Chrome has become the browser of choice for many. Although most hardware comes with a default option, most of us actively download Chrome because we feel it’s better. This is reflected in the statistics of the web browser. Chrome accounts for 64% of the browser market. Every month, 200 million people are protected from infected domains thanks to Chrome. More than 5 million people have installed the mobile Chrome browser.

YOUTUBE

It’s difficult to remember a world without YouTube. Today, the video streaming platform is giving cable TV a run for its money. However, it’s often forgotten in the conversation that Google bought the platform in 2006.

We all recognize the success of YouTube, but it’s still shocking to see the actual numbers behind the streaming site. YouTube is the second largest search platform in the world – despite only hosting videos. Over 1 billion videos are viewed every day. Each day, 400 hours of YouTube videos are uploaded.

ANDROID

When we think of Android, we often consider it a 50/50 competitor with Apple and the iPhone. The reality is considerably different. The company holds almost as large a monopoly on the mobile industry as Google does in the search world. You can send these statistics to your iPhone friend, next time that they brag that their Apple device is better or more popular!

WHAT CAN WE LEARN FROM GOOGLE?

The most important lesson we can learn from Google is that size doesn’t matter. They don’t have millions of employees, and they don’t pump out new products every month, yet their growth has been exponential. By focusing on where they excel, they’re creating a strong foundation for growth. The other takeaway is their willingness to experiment. From their conception, Google and Alphabet have both taken on endeavours outside of their comfort zone. While some have been profitable, others have not, but innovation cannot exist without failure.

If you are in business, you are selling something. Winning a contract, being in retail, coaching clients, owning a car lot, offering adventure tours, selling industrial supplies, or serving a cup of coffee, it’s all sales.

Selling is fun. It’s all about smart strategy, and creative positioning. In sales, you are always learning, growing, and improving. It’s the perfect place to set big goals, access huge gains, be a contribution to clients, connect with the most interesting people, all the while coming to know yourself, and continuously improve.

Sales, I don’t think any other profession is as cool!

ELEMENTS OF SALES STRATEGY: Selling takes strategy; It requires a belief in the product and depth of knowledge that instills confidence.

Sales demands that you understand the factors that influence people and have them decide to buy.

CONFIDENCE: Sales happen when you can communicate that your product is the best thing your client could spend their money on, and that has to be the truth.

You have to know what you are selling inside and out. Your product or service has to be so clearly understood that you could talk about it for hours on end in all its various details.

You have to convey what your client will lose if they don’t have it and what they will gain by having it.

And it’s not just what you say; it’s how you say it. Your sales conversation should have a foundation of authority and 70 TheOGM.com

confidence that clearly shows your client you know precisely how to support them.

REWARDS & PAIN: It’s a human tendency to move toward rewards and away from pain; this is essential to your sales process and needs to strategically built into your sales conversation. What are your clients’ goals, objectives, and desires? What pain do they want to avoid?

PERSONALITY TYPES: You will need a clear understanding of who your potential clients are, and knowing their personality types is critical. These days corporate buying often involves influencing and connecting with a buying team. On that team, you may have a personality type that is super actionoriented, logical, and down to Earth. If you try to sell that person with an emotional appeal, it’s likely not going to work because they don’t view the world from that vantage point.

RESEARCH: So how do you figure out who your prospects are and what motivates them? You do your research. Associations, special interest groups, and online platforms are a great introduction to who your potential company and clients are. Check out Facebook and Instagram for more personal information and LinkedIn for more professional profiles. Pay acute attention to what they post. Make sure you understand what motivates them. Be clear about what they focus on and spend time on. Be in your clients’ world and see through their eyes to get a deeper understanding of them.

SPEAK THEIR LANGUAGE Selling comes down to basic communication fundamentals.

Speak the language that your client speaks. Speak into the world that they can hear.

Closing more sales correlate directly to your ability to see your client’s personality traits clearly and then speak into that. There’s nothing worse than someone trying to sell you a website with an emotional appeal of color theory and font selection when all you want is the hardcore details of the website features and when it’s going to be done.

BOOSTING SALES BY 75% According to serial entrepreneur Tai Lopez of MentorBox, there are four distinct personality types to consider when you want to persuade a potential client to buy your product or service.

Tai breaks people’s characters traits down into four distinct personality types (PACE): Practical Action Oriented Social Emotional While people will exhibit all of these personality types, there are one or two that are dominant. Find the dominant trait and speak into that personality type. Based on thirty years of sales,I interpret the personality types as follows: PRACTICAL Practical people are down to Earth, slow-paced individuals that rely on facts and figures to make decisions. Often mathoriented, they look at the world more scientifically as to what’s proven, and they don’t like the fluffy, emotional stuff. To sell to a ‘practical’ person, you’re going to want to have your facts, figures, and percentage gains laid out clearly. Your product or services have to be well thought out. It has to make sense. It has to be a critical piece of the equation. It has to ensure the ‘practical buyer’ that it is instrumental to their success and factually backed up as to why that is so.

ACTION Action-oriented people are those fast-paced individuals that see the opportunity and then go for it. They are the entrepreneurial minds that instantly recognize opportunity and then move on it. They say things like, “Here’s the list now let’s get on with it.” or “Here’s the goal, the steps, and the timelines.”

To sell to the “action-person’, you’re going to want to ensure you have communicated the start and end dates and clearly defined the strategy in between. Your product or services has to clearly show the action client that it will get the job done, and we can start now and here’s the delivery time lines.

SOCIAL This person is out there on social media; they go to all the business networking events; they chitter chatter; they stop to talk to people for no reason at all. They are the butterfly flitting around poking their noses into other people’s worlds because they love people. They connect with anyone and everyone.

They are people people.

Selling to the ‘social-person’ is all about connection. You

need to answer questions like, “What will they gain in terms of connecting with others, that makes sense to them, in this sale?“ How will your product allow them to be more connected with their colleagues, team members, or potential clients? Social people love to buy advertising, for example, because they “connect” with their clients through marketing strategies.

They love social media because of its power to connect to the masses in new and unique ways.

EMOTIONAL Emotional people are sensitive, deep, reflective, and often highly creative. They speak, express, work, and connect through the world of emotions. Selling to emotional people means focusing on having them feel good, or it has the benefit of allowing them not to feel bad. They are often ‘soft skills’ oriented. They like products and services that speak to them intuitively, emotionally, energetically. Often in their language, you hear them say, “this makes me feel…..”

Emotional people often focus on doing good in the world, being a corporate contribution; they like to be a do-gooder; they enjoy meaningful connections. Your product or service has to make them ‘feel good.’

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR SALES Knowing your product and your clients takes diligence, research and strategy. Don’t step over that. Do the work and it will pay off.

Understand that business is nothing more than a network of conversations. More sales conversations can lead to more sales, but it’s not the ultimate solution. It’s more about the quality of sales conversations you have and the strategy you execute. Ask yourself how comprehensive your product knowledge is and list the areas where you need to improve.

Then improve.

Removing any of your own doubts is the first step in eliminating clients’ doubts. Your confidence breeds confidence in others. It permeates every word you choose while you are with a client, and it picked up in your body language and body disposition.

It’s important!

Make sure you know who you are selling to, and you understand what personality types they are so you can speak into their world rather than from your own. Connect from their vantage point, speak their language, eliminate their doubts, and open up a gateway to do business.

Sales is a never-ending, non-stop journey of mastery and excellence. Now, go out there and sell something!

HOMEPORT APARTMENT HOTEL: SERVICE IN THE DETAILS When I arrived at the Homeport Apartment Hotel, there was a sweet note and a beautiful welcome basket waiting to greet me when I walked in.

This place had everything in the apartment that one would need for long term stays. Dishes, cutlery, a fully stocked kitchen, a full-size fridge, stove, and microwave are all available. It certainly makes a difference when you can cook your own grub, stay healthy, and feel great.

I like to eat healthy and lectin-free, so this long-term stay unit was perfect for daily smoothies and even Sunday dinners.

We had a family tragedy while I was staying at Homeport.

My brother passed away in a tragic and sudden accident.

When I arrived back to Homeport after the celebration of his life, there was the card on the table, and it said, “We are so sorry for your loss.” It was hand-signed by all the staff. That’s the kind of kindness and warmth you get from the people who work at Homeport. It’s unmistakable.

There’s often a note on the dining table, from Gerri. We are friends now, and when my brother passed, this was what her note said “Good day, my friend, have done your housekeeping, and someone sent food to the front desk.

I put it in your fridge for you. I hope that’s OK. I kept your mugs from last time and put them in the cupboard.

I hope you guys are doing better. I am always thinking about you. If you need anything, don’t hesitate to let me know. Have a good day. Your friend Gerri.” It’s the thoughtfulness that makes you feel at home!

If exercising is your thing, there’s a gym downstairs.

While I’m at Homeport, you might find me downstairs on the stationary bike sporting my Occulus Go. I take thrilling adventure rides while biking and get my exercise traveling to Occulus worlds all over the place. Exercising in a 360-experience in the fully equipped gym is a blast.

Homeport Apartment Hotels has the details down pat. Everything from the way they wash the linens in detergent for sensitive skin, to the way they send a fax even if it doesn’t go through the first three times. There’s a massive boardroom for corporate events and meetings and all the amenities you’ll need to do business. There’s also the convenience of the shuttle that drops you off for your business meetings or even a bit of famous downtown fun in downtown St. John’s.

They say that God is in the details, and I believe that business excellence is in the details. That’s more than evident with long and short term stays at Homeport.

A Weight Loss Strategy That Works

It’s January, the time of year when weight loss is on the minds of many. But with so many “diets” to choose from, how do you know which will work for you?

Weight loss, especially sustainable weight loss, requires baby steps and lasting lifestyle changes. It requires consistency and a much more thoughtful approach than just calories in versus calories out.

The right approach is as individual as you are. However, sensible and lasting weight loss has some common factors for everyone; this is what I call a Framework for Sustainable Weight Loss. It involves: 1. Recognizing the hormonal factors that influence weight gain.

Factors such as insulin resistance, appetite/craving control, elevated cortisol levels, and changes to the male and female sex hormones as we age.

2. Tuning your metabolism – supporting digestion, the liver (our main fat-burning organ), and the microbiome are paramount to make the metabolic shift that will help you lose weight and keep it off.

3. Eat the right foods in the right amounts; this involves determining YOUR optimal caloric intake and balance of the macronutrients fat, protein, and carbohydrates. While ketogenic diets have become wildly popular, they are not a panacea. The best bang for your nutritional buck is to adopt an anti-inflammatory diet style high in nutrient-dense whole foods.

Stress management – Busy, stressful modern lifestyles have caused the pounds to creep up. With chronic stress comes higher than ideal levels of Cortisol, your body’s main stress hormone. Stress affects fat storage, insulin response, and eating habits. Controlling, or perhaps even more importantly, recognizing stress and effectively dealing with it, is essential to weight loss.

Exercise doesn’t matter …

Well, exercise doesn’t matter in the way that you think, anyway.

Exercise is a vital part of being healthy. But as for its direct effect on weight loss, those who hit the gym to shed the weight are probably going to be SORE-ly disappointed. The real benefit of exercise on weight loss lies with how it helps you mentally and emotionally. By finding activities that you look forward to, you can manage stress and positively affect cortisol levels. Maintaining muscle mass, bone density, and burning extra calories are helpful, but not essential to an effective weight loss strategy. Don’t exercise to burn calories. Be active to burn stress. Gardening, a stroll in the park, yoga, tai chi, archery, sailing are all great physical activities. So, choose an activity that moves you.

Are you frustrated with a lack of results?

Restoring hormonal balance requires a holistic approach that supports whole-body health. Here are some signs that your body is out of balance and that you might need a metabolic tune-up!

Include protein, healthy fat, and low glycemic carbohydrates with each meal.

•

Eat mindfully. Slow down and chew food thoroughly; this has a profound impact on digestion, satiety, and appetite control.

You are going through significant hormonal changes such as menopause.

•

Take a digestive supplement or digestive enzymes. Consult a health care practitioner for the supplement that is right for you.

•

You are under stress, recently endured trauma or have other ongoing mental health pressures.

•

Eat an anti-inflammatory plant-based diet that includes adequate healthy fat. You cannot lose weight if there is ongoing inflammation.

You suffer from digestive troubles like constipation, heartburn, or bloating.

•

You have gained more than 10 pounds in 12 months.

Eat 30+ grams of fiber daily. If you eat more fiber, you tend to consume fewer calories overall. Also, you will absorb fewer calories from the food you eat and have a healthier microbiome.

You’ve tried multiple diets, and nothing seems to work.

•

You have lost weight in the past but since regained it.

•

You have gained weight and body fat around your mid-section.

•

If these statements resonate with you, it might be time to seek professional help. Working with a nutritionist can help tease out the individual nuances that will make a difference for you. An individual approach that works all areas of the Framework is the best way to achieve sustainable results.

An effective weight loss strategy is about more than diet and exercise.

There are hormonal, psychological, and lifestyle factors to consider.

Successful weight loss involves creating the right metabolic environment, making appropriate food choices, and including the necessary lifestyle modifications to support and sustain weight loss.
