ability to see the big picture and execute a strategic plan similar

There is no doubt that renewable energy sources will play a strategic role in powering the global economy of the future, but right now crude oil is still the undisputed heavyweight champion of the energy world. In 2018, on this planet, we consumed more oil than any prior year in history – about 99.3 million barrels per day. This number is projected to rise again in 2019 to 100.8 million barrels per day. This means that the reason we have global warming is directly because of energy consumption at an unprecedented rate. Who are consumers of energy - we are. All of us. In a world where populations are growing, third world nations are coming on stream and a world where we do more, have more, make more and live for more, it takes petroleum to deliver on all of that. Clearly, the carbon emission issue, at least where fossil fuels is concerned, is a consumption issue. We need to create a sustainable action plan moving forward; one without blame and with a clear understanding of how to elevate our combined resources and create an energy mix for the future.

to that of Norway. A system of governance that ensures we are owners in our own oil and gas projects, and in charge of the rate at which we progress. We think that attracting oil and gas companies to Canada to develop our projects and reap all the benefits is the way to go. That’s not the way to go. Places like Norway and Abu Dhabi are miles ahead of Canada with their oil exploration, production, benefits and wealth funds, as a direct result of their approach to oil and gas. Norway and Abu Dhabi are the strongest financial regions in the world with the strongest investment funds in the world. Yet they don’t hold the largest oil reserves, nor are they the world’s largest oil producers. How can this be? They are smart; they invested in ‘their own’ oil and gas projects. They maintained control of their assets and are majority shareholders of their oil and gas projects. This is how they became ‘the great’ energy developers of our time.

Offshore Newfoundland Canada, we do not own majority shares in our oil and gas projects; as a result, we endure a future that is left in the hands of oil companies. This is never going to pay the dividends needed to proper at our highest level. We are caught taking the short-term fix at the expense of our long-term prosperity. Norway has a culture of state-owned oil projects and often their equity share is upwards of 60% ownership in it’s oil and gas projects. Norway’s model of investment in the energy industry has served them well in every area from project approval times to the shear number of wells explored and oil found. The smartest thing we can do with oil and gas is use it to build new sustainable energy infrastructure. Given world oil demand, it’s not going to be one energy source or the other; it’s going to be an energy mix of resources for the next 40 to 50 years.

NEWFOUNDLAND

GOT OIL The probability of finding oil and having a significant discovery in the coming years is high. It’s a roll of the dice that could quite possibly mean Offshore Newfoundland is taking off like that of it’s offshore twin, the North Sea. An impressive 80 + proposed drilling programs are about to come into play offshore Newfoundland overall. 42 wells have just been approved for drilling offshore Newfoundland in the coming years. Company strategy and positioning are imperative. Getting aligned is the game. Harnessing the opportunities is the play. There’s no doubt Newfoundland is a place to get excited about in the coming years. ARE YOU READY FOR THE OPPORTUNITIES?

ENVIRONMENTAL APPROVALS COMMENCE

the economy, creating secure jobs for our country’s middle class.”

And we are off to the races! April 17, 2019, marked the first series of environmental approvals that signal the green light for further exploration and discovery offshore Newfoundland. That is extremely good news. Having been thoroughly assessed and deemed ‘fit’ to proceed, it is clear that these two recent approvals signify that oil exploration and production are not likely to cause adverse environmental effects offshore Newfoundland.

These environmental approvals are significant because it means the operators responsible for finding oil will be drilling a combined 42 wells offshore over the next ten years. Given that the finding ratio of exploration wells to oil recovery is approximately 1 in 7, the probability of discovering oil is exceptionally high from these two drilling scenarios. Could we double our oil and gas industry with these two initiatives?

Many people fret about the time it takes for environmental assessments to take place, but they are a crucial component of the process of oil and gas exploration. They ensure that an oil project is safe and sound before proceeding. Consultations with the public, Indigenous Peoples, scientific evidence and a full assessment of greenhouse gas emissions all take place before a project proceeds.

Bets are on yes!

42 WELLS TO BE DRILLED The Honourable Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Indigenous Services, said, “All Newfoundlanders and Labradorians know how important offshore oil and gas is for the future of our province. These exploration projects provide excellent opportunities for jobs while providing operators with critical information regarding the potential of their offshore plays. The Government continues its commitment to protecting the environment while growing

APPROVAL #1 Equinor Canada Ltd. (Equinor) is proposing to conduct an exploration drilling project within offshore exploration licenses located in the Flemish Pass Basin, a minimum of 460 kilometres east of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. The proposed Flemish Pass Exploration Drilling Project would take place between 2019 and 2027, during which Equinor could drill up to 24 offshore wells (up to six per exploration licence) to determine the presence, nature, and quantities of the potential hydrocarbon resource in exploration licences 1139, 1140, 1141, and 1142

drilling project within offshore exploration licences located in the Jeanne d’Arc Basin and the Flemish Pass Basin, a minimum of 265 kilometres east of St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador. The proposed Eastern Newfoundland Offshore Exploration Drilling Project would take place between 2019 and 2029, during which ExxonMobil could to drill up to 18 offshore wells (up to six per exploration licence) to determine the presence, nature, and quantities of the potential hydrocarbon resource in exploration licences 1134, 1135 and 1137. Both projects are subject to approximately 90 legally-binding conditions the proponents must fulfil. These conditions will reduce or eliminate the potential effects of the projects on the environment. For example, the proponents will be required to mitigate and monitor potential effects on marine habitat, including those related to the treatment of waste discharges, reduce supply vessel speed when marine mammals are observed nearby, verify underwater noise levels, and conduct a survey to identify and avoid corals or sponges at each well site. Clearly, these new exploration wells hold the opportunity for oil suppliers and contractors over the next five to seven years!

WEST WHITE ROSE

WEST WHITE ROSE

350 kilometres southeast of the capital city, St. John’s, Newfoundland, the White Rose field sits at the edge of the Jeanne d’Arc Basin. Nothing but ocean and skyline, this foggy cold region of the Grand Banks is a diamond in the mist.

The platform has an overall height of 145 meters and a total weight of 210,100 tonnes. It will take more than 7.5 million person-hours for engineering and construction and will require approximately 800 workers at Argentia during peak construction.

The development of White Rose and its subsequent fields has been the work and vision of Husky Energy (68% partner owner) and its partners Suncor (26%) and Nalcor (5%). White Rose partners have seen nothing but gains from the White Rose project as it has provided oil producing returns from a number of fields in 2005, 2010, and 2015, with much more to come.

WEST WHITE ROSE PROJECT UPDATE

The original White Rose field was developed using subsea technology, consisting of three drill centres tied back to a Floating, Production, Storage, and Offloading (FPSO) vessel. The initial development of the White Rose project utilized a 21-well system that was tied back to the FPSO, meaning oil was pumped up to the seabed surface to drill centres on the ocean floor. From there oil then flowed up through a subsea production system of flow lines that were tied back or connected to the vessel. Since the initial oil production success, three field extensions have produced oil. North Amethyst was the first subsea tieback that started producing oil in May 2010. The South White Rose subsea tieback achieved first oil in June 2015. Both projects produce oil and deliver it back to the SeaRose FPSO. WEST WHITE ROSE The West White Rose project will access further resources to the west of the field, using a fixed drilling rig tied back to the existing SeaRose FPSO. That platform is a mega world-class initiative and is being constructed in Argentia, Newfoundland right now. First oil is expected in 2022. The concrete gravity base and topsides of the platform will combine to become the first of its kind offshore Newfoundland - a super platform. It is an innovative technological concept that requires ingenious precision and brain power to construct it and bring it to its resting place at the West White Rose field. This state-of-the-art platform was chosen because it has improved drilling efficiency, reduced weather downtime, lower operating costs and greater resource recovery potential. It is an island in the sea.

22 TheOGM.com

As of May 2019, work continued to progress on all fronts of the West White Rose platform including on the Topsides at Ingleside, Texas and locally on the Living Quarters module in Marystown and the Concrete Gravity Structure (CGS) in Argentia. Husky Energy has a strong safety and quality record across all its sites, largely attributable to their dedicated workforce. In Argentia, they spent the first part of the year working on the interior of the CGS where rebar was placed and conductor guides installed. Concrete works began in April 2019, with the lower dome concrete pour, the upper ring concrete pour, and the first of three quadrant slips planned for 2019. The three quadrant slipforms won’t make the CGS any higher. These are the perimeter quadrants and will be slipped to the same height of 46 metres. Each of the slips can take up to 40 days. The upper ring beam, the circle at the top of the CGS, involved approximately 330 cubic metres of concrete. The lower dome is approximately 1200 cubic metres, and the northwest quadrant slip is approximately 8700 cubic metres of concrete. First steel was cut on the Living Quarters in October 2017 and the project is now about 54 percent complete. Contracts for the lifeboat stations, helideck and flare boom will be awarded this year. In February 2019, Husky announced a change in the tow out and installation schedule, moving it from summer 2021 to summer 2022. This decision was made following one of the regular risk reviews. While Husky considered accelerating work to maintain the 2021 weather window, it would have resulted in substantial cost escalation without guarantee of success. First oil is still projected in 2022. NLP powered “LessLer helps organizations replace lost experience and knowledge

Waterford Energy Services Inc.- LessLer Team Developers: (From Left to Right) Blair MacDougall (President), Manav Sharma (Data Scientist), Raghav Gupta (Developer), Navkaran Kumar (Developer), Elham Etemad, PhD (Sr. Data Scientist), Mateus Pereira (Data Scientist), Kalene Hines (Project Engineer), Mike Cullymore (Sr. Software Specialist).

As of February 2017, job cuts resulted in a loss of over 440,000 positions in the global oil and gas industry according to Houston-based consulting firm Graves & Co. With these job losses, knowledge is lost and so is valuable mentorship for less experienced staff. This exposes your company to increased risk in repeating mistakes of the past. Understanding this dilemma Waterford Energy Services set out in 2016 to invest in the development of a solution utilizing Artificial Intelligence to help address this significant industry problem. A team of data scientists and software development experts were hired to form Waterford’s Data Science Team. After several years of development, the result is a new software tool called “LessLer”. LessLer allows individuals to quickly access unstructured documentation in a mentored environment to solve their problems, answer their questions and ensure that past lessons are indeed learned, not lost.

which, in our opinion, is too difficult to utilize effectively. It gets lost on shared drives, lost when staff leave, too difficult to access, and so on. We are curbing the tribal knowledge loss by providing a tool that ingests all of that documentation and presents it to the tech-savvy, yet less experienced teams that appear to be more prevalent today.” MacDougall continues, “We’ve also listened to our customers who want the ability to have Subject Matter Experts and mentorship functionality within the LessLer platform.” Lessler is software under development in Waterford’s offices that is a step change in how unstructured data is utilized in the industry. It is a software tool that organizes virtually all documents and transforms it into actionable knowledge. Mike Cullymore, Senior Software Specialist with Waterford Energy Services, says, “Think about all the data we acquire in a day, let alone a year. It’s massive

With industry changes in staff demographics, forced retirement, layoffs, and a transient workforce, we now have a new era of business from which to work. Teams with lower experience levels have to plan and execute highly complex projects while doing it on time and on budget without harm to the environment. These teams must educate themselves on past practices and processes as a fundamental stepping stone in their success. Blair MacDougall, President of Waterford Energy Services says, “With the recent downturn in the industry, key personnel have left at an alarming rate taking their tribal knowledge with them. Most of this knowledge is documented in massive amounts of unstructured data TheOGM.com 27

intellectual property that drives a company forward. LessLer is designed to harness the company’s history in the form of emails, documents, reports, equipment manuals, product specifications and incident reports.” As a mentoring tool, Lessler also permits oversight by subject matter experts, or other stakeholders such as regulatory agencies and service companies. This enhances the learning experience of users and ensures that key decisions using LessLer are peer reviewed. Lessler is intuitive using data visualization techniques to create a vibrant user experience. Data Scientist Mateus Pereira, a native of Brazil, applies his specialist skills in data visualization and ranking initiatives. He says, “LessLer presents data in a rich graphical interface that simplifies the user experience to find answers to complex problems. The user experience is currently being perfected so unwanted responses can be rejected and acceptable responses promoted, allowing LessLer to learn from the user.” Overseeing the overall construction of LessLer is Lead Data Scientist Elham Etemad, PhD. Her focus is the integration of two main components: A.I. and Mateus Pereira’s data visualization. LessLer uses natural

language processing (NLP) techniques to find candidate documents for solving the user’s problem. This component consists of query processing and document retrieval modules. The query processing module applies query correction and suggestion to help the users in improving their questions’ precision. The document retrieval module finds the most relevant documents and sort them based on their textual similarities with the question and feedback from users. What is known for certain is that the world is changing and it’s changing quickly. Within Exploration and Production companies, there are unprecedented amounts of documentation that is highly underutilized. Companies who will lead the industry are those that adapt, learn, and implement tools to use their data effectively, creating value through effective decision making. The next generation of energy workers are in need of better ways to unlock their historical data to ensure high-risk decisions are informed decisions and LessLer is being developed to do just that. To learn more about LessLer and arrange a demo, contact: Mike Cullymore (mike@wesi.ca).

BHP OFFSHORE NEWFOUNDLAND

BHP: Rig Required To Drill Orphan Basin

BHP Group Limited has been successful in its bids to acquire a 100% participating interest in, and operatorship of, two exploration licences for blocks 8 and 12 in the offshore Orphan Basin in Eastern Canada.

BHP Petroleum (New Ventures) Corporation (BHP) plans to undertake a drilling program in the Orphan Basin Region, offshore eastern Newfoundland and Labrador (Exploration licenses EL1157 and EL1158). It is anticipated that the initial campaign will consist of two wells, approximately twelve months apart. Subject to regulatory approval, drilling activity is anticipated to begin between July 2021 and July 2022. Accordingly, BHP seeks Expressions of Interests from interested contractors who can demonstrate the capability to deliver the following goods and services.

Ms. Geraldine. A. Slattery has been President of Operations Petroleum at BHP Group Limited since March 18, 2019. Geraldine Slatter believes the successful bids are an exciting opportunity for BHP to explore for world-class conventional oil assets as an early mover in this prospective region. This frontier opportunity has large oil resource potential which we identified through our Global Petroleum Endowment Study in 2016 and is in a low-risk country with competitive fiscal terms. This opportunity delivers on BHP’s exploration focus in conventional petroleum and will leverage their global deepwater development and operational expertise. BHP’s aggregate bid amount of US$625 million covers the drilling and seismic work required by the exploration work programs under the licence agreements over the six-year term. BHP’s minimum commitment under the licence agreements is for US$157 million. 36 TheOGM.com

Supply To BHP At BHP suppliers will become pre-qualified for a specific scope of work or service during the Request for Proposal (RFP) process (for work over $250k). BHP will be reviewing the local market to identify new suppliers. As a check and prior to issuing an RFP, BHP will be posting an Expressions of Interest (EOI) in NOIA’s daily e-newsletter, which is distributed to 600+ member companies. Newfoundland companies are encouraged to become NOIA members and review all EOIs to determine if they can provide the services.

OFFSHORE DRILLING MUD SLOPS SOLUTION NOW IN NEWFOUNDLAND

PARDY’S By Tina Olivero

What are mud slops? Mud slop is the drilling waste produced from offshore oil exploration and production. Dealing with mud slops is one of the challenges of the oil and gas industry as this waste is not environmentally friendly. So what do we do with it? “Mud slops,” by definition, are a mixture of spent drilling mud, recovered hydrocarbons, drill cuttings and flowback water in a complex and stable emulsion. This waste stream cannot be sold or easily disposed of and therefore has to be eliminated in the best way possible. Mud slops have historically been stored in pits or tanks without sustainable disposal solutions ... until now. In the past, mud slops were a disruptive waste that had to be transported, stored, and transshipped, which ultimately was not a cheap or sustainable solution. The real solution for mud slops is to break the complex emulsion and recover re-useable hydrocarbons, minimize the solids generated for disposal, and treat the water using effective technology to eliminate environmental liabilities. Prior to design, construction, and commissioning of Pardy’s mud slops facility, existing options for mud slops disposal weren’t sustainable and were very expensive, often requiring off-island transport. The process of breaking the mud slops and

recovering hydrocarbons for reuse is the key, and that key has finally been found right here in Newfoundland, Canada, by Pardy’s Waste Management. Pardy’s Waste Management and Industrial Services is now processing offshore mud slops for the industry. When Pardy’s team realized that a sustainable solution for mud slops disposal wasn’t available, and waste was being shipped outside the province, which was costly and logistically challenging, they saw an opportunity and created a mud slops facility in Donovan’s Industrial Park. They are excited about the new facility. Steve Moores, General Manager at Pardy’s Waste Management, says, “We have constructed and commissioned a new mud slops processing facility to service the offshore oil producers and their suppliers. With the knowledge of our processing team led by Steve Wiseman, and the vision of our owner, Derek Pardy, we have been able to create a really innovative solution that the industry needs to manage waste generated from exploration and development. Pardy’s has successfully treated and disposed of 7.5 Million litres of mud slops so far. Our mud processing trials began back in October of 2018 and included the research of flow rates, chemical mixology, employee training, and competency, along with third-party sampling and analysis to support the project. As of late October 2018,

we were averaging 120,000 to140,000 litres of mud slops a day for a total process throughput of 7,562,566 litres.” The Pardy’s mud slops facility is in a heated storage tank farm and allows for continuous operations, without shutting down for adverse weather conditions while maintaining operational control. The trial project generated 1,743,025 litres of recoverable oil and was sold as IFO (Industrial Fuel Oil). One major advantage of the facility is that it’s close to the activity, operates 24/7/365, and does not require the intermediate bulk storage of waste, which by many standards is a preferred option of waste management because it eliminates the liability associated with storage. It’s quite simple: waste in, treated water, recovered hydrocarbons and minimal secondary waste out. Steve Wiseman says, “The process of mud slops phase separation allows us to totally separate the phases of emulsion, and minimizes waste volume. We don’t add binding agents or sawdust to dry out our solids. Our goal is waste reduction. Conventionally, mud slops were mixed with sawdust to make them dry and sent off the island…. our business is based on finding solutions, not transferring them to someone else’s backyard!” The current Pardy’s facility employs 65+ people, with seasoned

oil and gas industry technical experience in excess of 85 combined years in waste processing to support the energy industry of the province. Facts about Pardy’s Waste Management and Industrial Services Ltd. Pardy’s Waste Management and Industrial Services Ltd. is owned and led by Derek Pardy. Derek is an accomplished businessperson who has never been afraid to take on complex problems, tight timelines, or big projects. Pardy’s has been in the industrial cleaning, waste processing, high-pressure service, and vacuum truck rental business since 1982. Our combined years of experience and diversity of human resources make us a premium service provider with the ability to use our equipment, people, and the broad resource base of suppliers and subcontractors to solve complex problems for our customers. Pardy’s has constantly evolved and grown its ability to provide a full suite of waste management services for their customers. Their current focus is ensuring that the oil and gas industry has sustainable solutions for industrial cleaning, bulk storage, and waste management. WWW.Pardyswaste.com

GAME CHANGER THE UNDERWATER WORLD

Distributing electricity from the ocean floor - it’s finally here! By Tina Olivero

People who aren’t courageous enough to change the future, should not interrupt those who are doing it. This is certainly true when it comes to the oil and gas industry that is creating a sustainable energy future and serving world energy demand. We live in a knowledge-based economy, a place where innovation and digitalization are taking over every aspect of life on earth. It’s a playground for inventors, visionaries and energy pioneers. These are exciting times because we are creating energy solutions that were not even a dream, let alone a reality, just ten short years ago. It’s a new and sustainable underwater world! Here’s what’s about to come… TRUE PIONEERS IMAGINE WHAT “CAN BE” Having visited the Offshore Technology Conference in Houston, I had the privilege of meeting with and interviewing some of the greatest minds of our time, pioneering souls who are changing the oil and gas landscape with everything from unmanned rigs,

to electrical substations supporting oil and gas production, on the seafloor. Extremely impressive was the work of ABB on subsea power and automation systems that expand oil and gas operations capacity, extend the lifespan of an oil field and reduce costs for oil and gas fields. The call is ‘subsea to market’, where the future of oil and gas is in the processing plant underwater. In other words, production, separation and storage of oil and gas happen sight unseen, below the surface. It’s mind-boggling. THE SUBSEA FACTORY Distributing electricity in water is almost unthinkable, yet it has been done in such a way that it will revolutionize the way we work and live. Seven years in the making, ABB has turned a vision into reality. Svein Vatland, Vice President Subsea Technology Program, has made it his life’s work to enable a power distribution station to work on the bottom of the sea. He says, “This technology allows operators to move into deeper

waters and enable a cost-efficient way of developing these fields, at depths of up to 3000 meters.” Subsea oil and gas exploration is done in an extremely harsh environment. New technology that goes beyond today’s current capabilities is required. The target of a five-year Joint Industry Project (JIP) being led by ABB and the Norwegian oil company Equinor, was to develop the technology required to seamlessly power tomorrow’s underwater facilities. Together with their partners, ABB and partners have invested over $100 million dollars to develop this new-age energy generating system. Imagine over 100 MW of power distributed on the ocean floor supporting oil and gas production. That is the future. A future that has subsea facilities operating on the ocean floor providing electricity to the drilling process, directly at the point of seafloor operations. A future that means smaller FPSO’s, subsea tieback efficiency, a self-monitoring and self-testing system with more efficient oil and gas production overall. Beginning in late 2013, ABB has been developing electrical equipment that can reliably provide power (equivalent to what is needed to power a small city) subsea at depths down to 3,000 meters over distances up to 600 km, and then distribute the power to multiple users. ABB has become a leading supplier of electrification solutions that operate with little to no maintenance in a highly corrosive ocean environment. The solution they have engineered is appropriately called the Subsea Power Station, and it reminds you of something out of a sci-fi movie, except it’s not on another planet; it’s under the sea. What does it take to build a power station at sea? You only have to think about the diverse range of challenges for a power station submerged in water. Imagine a fully functional underwater facility transmitting 100 MW of power up to 600 kilometres away from the shore, at depths of 3000 meters, on the ocean floor. It’s the pie in the sky dream that has become a reality! The brilliant minds of ABB had to engineer solutions that addressed challenges like: • Building a safe system that works underwater • Underwater control systems • Overcoming water/electricity challenges • Mechanical considerations • The possibility of leaks and breaks • Underwater extreme pressures • Tides and water temperatures • Water depths • Component maintenance • Operating efficiencies • and so much more. The ABB team did not waver from the task; they pioneered with a solutions mindset, and that’s what brings dreams into reality. THE GAME CHANGER It takes a tribe to build new power systems on the ocean floor.

42 TheOGM.com

Seven years of planning, designing, and testing has been the work of the ABB subsea team, to get this right. And it’s finally here. From the initial ABB subsea installation in the 1970s to a full subsea station utilized for oil and gas production, it is an uncustomary truth that has arrived right on time. This work is similar to sending a satellite up in space. Both work in conditions that once the technology is installed, fixing anything is very difficult. This ABB system will be free of people working and servicing it. It will be fully automated. The premise is safety and efficiency whereby oil platform workers will be relocated to shore-based control rooms reducing risk at sea. Underwater oil production seems like a pipedream for the wild minds of fools, but it’s actually steeped in very sound energy generation and oil production principles. Underwater operations: • increase safety • greatly reduces operational costs • reduce the energy needed to recover oil • reduce or eliminates marine pollution • simplify decommissioning • boost oil production with increased flow rates • provide services closer to the reservoir • minimize capital and operating expenditures • improve oil and gas recovery rates • create the environment to explore longer, deeper and in colder fields • provide a predictive model of operations for peak, reliable performance While the technical challenges of this initiative have been beyond imaginable, the payoff will be huge for oil companies of the future. Svein Vatland, Vice President of Subsea Technology Program at ABB, and his team have had the privilege of creating the unthinkable and making it real. This project is the bridge to a new energy future. It’s sustainable, and it’s a dream come true. Where will these subsea factories be placed around the world? Svein Vatland says, “We are now analyzing where our systems will be best utilized. This is a global game and we are looking at all the various deepwater sites around the world that this system will support.” The ultimate goal is to have a self-controlled, fully autonomous system that has no human interaction at all. That’s the future to come… It’s clear, subsea factories will change the way we live and work. It’s the possibility of underwater distribution of energy that’s not unsightly to our landscapes, but instead silently and efficiently tucked away on the seafloor creating the energy we need on the surface of the earth. Given that our planet is 70% submerged underwater, the new energy-producing ‘water world’ is a gamechanger for us all. SOURCE AND PICTURES: ABB, EQUINOR

Enclosed Industrial Areas A Possible Death Trap? By Tina Olivero

You can’t see it, smell it, or taste it. It’s a silent killer in the industrial and commercial workplace. What is it?

testing for CO, CO2, NO2 (which also contributes to a lack of Oxygen in the workplace imperative.

That’s right, it’s Carbon Monoxide, and it’s a killer.

Testing for silent gas emissions has to be a part of your company maintenance plan. Timely scheduled tests are the way to go. Any company that has machines powered by petroleum needs a plan to address maintenance by qualified professionals for indoor air monitoring.

The invisible killer, Carbon Monoxide (CO) in workplaces is produced by machines, engines, and appliances that burn carbon-based fuels such as natural gas, LPG, propane, diesel, and petrol. It is the most predominant toxic gas found within warehouses of industrial & commercial worksites like oil and gas support facilities, sports arenas, shipping/receiving areas, automotive repair, parking garages, and industrial fabrication facilities. It’s commonly detected in areas using fuel-powered; forklifts, ice cleaning machines, pumps, heaters, and other inside gas-fired equipment including cooking areas. Carbon monoxide poisoning is a huge threat to workers and is a dangerous poison so opening doors and windows or using large fans do not guarantee safety for your people. To complicate matters, CO is not the only silent killer; there’s also CO2 and NO2 emissions found in the workplace, which makes

Most often it’s not equipment failure that’s the culprit of poisonous emissions but rather the lack of maintenance of equipment and machines. Think infrared bleacher heaters, hot water heaters and boilers, furnaces, dehumidifiers, forklifts, scissor or boom lifts, generators, idling vehicles, and other tools, equipment and machines in your workplace. If you have any of these emission producers on site, then you need professional gas detection services to mitigate your risk. Lee Parmiter of EnviroMed Detection Services in Paradise, NL says, “Because CO is colourless, odourless and tasteless, it isn’t detectable without the presence of detectors. If a forklift

is running for a short time or left to idle, CO can build up and without warning, create problems for workers and equipment. Workers may show early symptoms of CO exposure such as; flu-like and non-specific: headache, nausea, dizziness, visual disturbances, and rapid breathing. If ignored, the worker could pass out and even die. Even low levels of CO can make people ill. We offer our clients worksite assessments to help assist in monitoring options & ensure your worker safety.” Lee says, “Take Forklifts as an example. The condition of your forklift and the quality of maintenance plays a large role in how much CO is emitted. Our technicians use certified testing equipment to determine the concentration of CO in an area where a forklift operates. We will then advise as to next action steps. If we recommend gas detectors should be available onsite, then we will follow up with a regular maintenance schedule as part of your everyday activities! Once to twice a year is normally suggested for calibrations with periodic bump testing conducted on a more frequent schedule specific to the applicable gas.” Gas detection requirements are something all

employees need to be made aware of. Warning signs should be posted with no-idle zones identified. All employees should know the dangers of exposures to poisonous gases and be comfortable with reporting any potential or actual gas event. Monitoring and alarming to OH&S (occupational health & safety) guidelines is imperative with proper ventilation methods activated automatically by the detection equipment. All equipment and machinery must be maintained as per manufacture’s specifications. That’s the protocol for accurate, dependable gas detection/monitoring program to ensure keeping your workers safe and alive. Being aware of the potential dangerous emissions at work is critical, and understanding the death trap of an enclosed area is key to any company’s success and a family’s security. ENERGY ADDICTION One reason for climate change By Tina Olivero

What if we turned energy concerns into opportunities? How about harnessing opposition as a path to solutions? What if we create differences as a place to build new structures of unity? Sound a little too altruistic? This is the calling of our time. - Tina Olivero

Climate change is the result of the rising temperature of the planet. It’s happening because populations are rising, pollution is rising and we have an insatiable appetite for agriculture and energy. Greenhouse gases, like methane, are produced through agricultural practices, including livestock manure. Others, like CO2, come from natural processes like respiration and from the burning of fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas; all of which contribute to climate change. Climate change is partially a human appetite issue. We are not settling for a life of moderation. We don’t want to be normal, average or mediocre; we want two cars, ten trips, and who cares how many cows we eat and how much fuel we use. It’s convenient to blame the oil companies for global warming, but as everybody knows, blame is usually what happens when we refuse to look at ourselves. The reality is that most everyone

52 TheOGM.com

on the planet is contributing to climate change by virtue of our unwillingness to live minimally and moderate consumption. OIL AND GAS The consideration of oil and gas as a valuable commodity has many angles of debate. Some believe oil and gas will be the primary source of energy for another 50 years and nothing will be more effective at meeting world energy demand. Others believe we should eliminate oil and gas for other cleaner sustainable fuel sources. Some think that the smartest thing we can do with oil and gas is used it to bridge us to a new energy future. The thing about differing perspectives is that they all have merit, and rather than wasting time fighting over disagreements, how about coming together and merging commonalities in the interest of a solid plan for the planet. What if we turned concerns into opportunities? Use opposition

as a path to solutions. Create differences as a place to build new structures of unity. Sound a little too altruistic? Merging perspectives will most probably be the fastest, most economical way to create a new energy sustainable world. Think about it, we are globalizing. We need to think global. What affects one affects all. Now that’s a conversation worth having. It’s the oil and gas industry that has catapulted us into the industrial era and modernized our world. The industrial era gave way to the new digital economy we now have. All come with progress and with a price. It’s easy to see that with every advance of humankind, there is an opposing negative impact as well. While cars are one of our most significant advances in human history there are still impacts and failures with cars. People die in car accidents every day, and the environmental impact of vehicles is unprecedented. But we don’t stop driving our cars; we progress and mitigate risk. That’s also true of the oil and gas industry. We don’t stop oil and gas production; we continue while we mitigate risks and utilize it to bring in new energy like wind, solar, geothermal and more. Oil is the foundation of our world. It’s the most sought-after commodity on the planet because it is in everything we have and do. From the phone in your hand to the gas in your car, to the clothes on your back. The petroleum industry saturates it all. As an energy nation, our focus has to be on a safe environment and people. The oil and gas industry in Canada is already extremely good at that. Canadian oil companies and their subcontractors in the offshore oil industry are among the top environmental and safety stewards in the world. That is a fact. We have insurance to protect us from car accidents knowing there will be accidents. We need to have that same level of knowledge, understanding, and acceptance of the oil and gas industry and its operations and limitations. Otherwise, we are working against ourselves, trying to eliminate oil and gas; that which sustains us and our current way of life. Canada’s the world’s 4th largest producer of oil. Because of oil and gas, we have enjoyed prosperous economic conditions and oil and gas has been the foundation of Canada’s economy. What happens to our entire economic system if we take that down? Have we thought it all through? The world won’t work

without oil and gas. Canada won’t work without oil and gas. You only have to look at the last 32 months in Canada to see the results of the oil price collapse. 40,000 + job layoffs meant a socioeconomic impact that was unprecedented and staggering. People need purpose and focus in life, and the oil and gas industry, directly and indirectly, has been a strong foundation for many Canadians in this regard. We don’t want to lose the strong foundation that oil and gas provides, and end up with extreme societal problems that affect each of us right here at home. Impacts like cuts in education, health, and other social programs. Socioeconomic impacts like a rise in addiction, spousal abuse, suicide, and mental illness, all of which we have seen on the rise in the last few years across Canada, especially in oil and gas regions. Is that a coincidence? What’s Canada worth without oil? How can we even think about getting to new energy without oil? The reality is, there is no new energy without the support of oil and gas. We need to be educated, share information, elevate our youth and utilize current media as a channel for progress and unified growth. The answers begin there... Like it or not, life’s comforts always come with some setbacks. Sometimes environmental and in extreme cases, just like car accidents, sadly the loss of life. That will also occur in the new energy regimes as well. There will be an environmental impact with clean energy as there is with other industrial sectors. Let’s drop the finger-pointing and be pro-active with an allinclusive new energy mix, one that unites differing perspectives and solves the challenges of the day - those most pressing like climate change. It starts with listening to each other and being open to many views. It’s an inclusive model. What we know for sure is that oil and gas companies will be world leaders in building a new energy future. They have the funds to do so. They are in the energy business and will continue by adapting new innovation and technology with the times. Collaboration, information sharing, digitalization and advances in technology will all play a part in creating the future of energy so let’s elevate each other in the name of progress Nature didn’t make geographical boundaries, mankind did that! So let’s take down those boundaries and think on behalf of the planet. Think without; walls, separation, country boundaries and without judgement of differing nations. All the answers are in nature, look to her to find our way.

OFFSHORE FLOATING WIND TURBINES A possibility for Newfoundland Offshore By Tina Olivero

Hywind Scotland relative size to Big Ben in London

ontrary to common belief, it’s the oil and gas companies that will C be the world’s leaders in creating much of the renewable energy in the future. Oil and gas c ompanies know that the most powerful thing we can do with petroleum resources is to use them to bridge us to new energy. Oil and gas companies see the future in wind energy offshore because they know what it’s like to work in harsh offshore environments, they understand the background and history of a marine c ulture; they adhere to environmental and safety considerations offshore and they can easily transfer technology from petroleum to wind while working at sea. EQUINOR FLOATING WIND TURBINES - Less than 15 years ago people believed that Statoil (now Equinor) was crazy to think they could build floating wind turbines in harsh o ffshore regions. Time and time again it’s the ‘so-called’ crazies that keep changing the world! To put a giant wind turbine on top of a floating spar structure and have it towed it out to sea is not unlike our current oil and gas, gravity base structures in that they are mammoth projects that require precise and ingenious engineering, with a pioneering imagination for what is possible! Less than 20 years later, the world’s first f loating wind turbines are here producing electricity at a rate of 30 MW in the Hywind Scotland pilot park as a direct result of Equnior’s stand for a sustainable new energy future. The p roject will demonstrate the feasibility of future commercial floating wind farms that could be more than four times the size of the current structures, and be the models for floating wind turbines of the future. THE EQUINOR MODEL - (Source: www.Equinor.com) HYWIND FLOATING WIND TURBINE - Hywind is a floating wind turbine design based on a single floating cylindrical spar buoy moored by cables or chains to the sea bed. Its substructure is ballasted so that the entire construction floats upright. Hywind combines familiar technologies from the offshore and wind power industries into a new design. The floating design allows Hywind wind turbines to be placed in waters too deep for conventional bottom-fixed t urbines. O ffshore winds are typically more consistent and stronger over the sea, due to the absence of t opographic f eatures that disrupt wind flow. Hywind uses a ballasted catenary layout with three mooring cables with 60-tonne weights h anging from the midpoint of each anchor cable to provide additional tension. Control software on board constantly monitors the o peration of the wind turbine and alters the pitch of the blades to effectively dampen the motion of the tower and maximize production. Electricity produced is taken to shore through cables. After 8 years of testing a full-scale p rototype offshore Karmøy in Norway, the Hywind demo has been shown to function well in all wind and wave conditions. SUBSTRUCTURE - The floating structure consists of a steel cylinder filled with ballast water and rock or iron ore. It has a design draft of 85-90 m and a displacement of around 12,000 tonnes. The diameter at the water line is about 9-10 m, while the diameter of the submerged section of the buoy is 14-15 m. FABRICATION - Onshore assembly reduces time and the risk of offshore operations. The substructures for Hywind Scotland were transported in a horizontal position to the onshore assembly site at Stord on the west coast of Norway. There, the

giant spar-structures were filled with close to 8000 tonnes of seawater to make them stay upright. Finally, they were filled with around 5500 tonnes of solid ballast while pumping out approximately 5000 tonnes of seawater to maintain draft. MOORING SYSTEM - The structure is moored to the s eabed using a conventional 3-line mooring system. In a wind farm layout, common anchor points may be used, reducing the number of anchors per unit. The mooring lines are c urrently made of steel chains. In the future, anchor types will be determined by seabed conditions, and in the case of Hywind Scotland, suction anchors are used. In 2009 Statoil installed the Hywind Demo offshore Karmøy, Norway. The demonstration unit has a 2,3 MW turbine, while the diameter of the blades is 85 m. For six years, the demonstration unit performed well, and in 2015 it was decided to proceed to the next phase. HYWIND FACTORY - Equinor has a strong cost reduction a mbition for Hywind. We will utilize a “Hywind Factory” m ethodology to realize our ambition. The “Hywind Factory” is not a physical f actory, but rather a systematic approach to m ature and industrialize the Hywind concept, to significantly reduce costs and improve the competitiveness of floating wind. NEWFOUNDLAND OFFSHORE WIND TURBINES Newfoundland is strongly positioned to bridge from oil plays to wind offshore. With existing infrastructure like Bull Arm and Marystown fabrication facilities, the province has an a lready existing offshore infrastructure and workforce. When it comes to wind availability the province is also a world leader; it’s one of the top-ten windiest places on earth! Canada/Newfoundland and Labrador would be very smart to invest in its own offshore wind parks right about now! Source & Photos: Equinor

Houston Downpour Turns Into Simple Twist Of Fate By Tina Olivero

Sitting in Houston’s 5 pm traffic in a torrential downpour, through the bus window I noticed a man carrying a piece of cardboard to cover himself. His goal seemed to be to find temporary shelter from the furious rainstorm under the manic Houston highway system.

Shaking off the rain like ducks coming out of a pond, we all piled into the hotel and saddled up to the bar for a drink and some grub. We got to know each other grumbling about the bus and how we weren’t going to stay on it for another minute, let alone another hour.

My heart melted as I wondered who he was.

As serendipity would have it, God if you will, I was fortunate enough to sit next to two great guys from Ebensburg, Pennsylvania, who had also been at the Offshore Technology Conference that as I was attending. We connected!

Who was his family? Did he have food? Was he mentally unwell? What happened to him? I was on the bus headed in the opposite direction. I felt helpless. I was hit in the heart with the question, ‘are we doing enough’? The rain kept pouring down and I was a ways away from my hotel. Feeling restless I decided to make a move. Rather than wait on the traffic and pelting rain to clear, I decided to get off at the very next stop and take shelter there. A bunch of other travellers had the same idea so we all piled off the bus at the Hotel Derek by the Houston Galleria. 60 TheOGM.com

The coincidence of our meeting was the instant answer to my question, are we doing enough? Well, these guys are. Exhibiting at the Offshore Technology Conference, Chris Oldham and Paul Martin sell oil and gas supplies to industry and in doing so their organization, in turn, supports services to more than 500 persons with disabilities. Wow!

INCLUSION

I thought about all the purchasing that happens in the oil and gas industry worldwide, and I imagined a world where companies got preference on bids if they supported the less fortunate. I wondered if this model could eliminate the epidemic of homelessness in North America and help the man who stole my heart under the bridge an hour ago. - Tina Olivero

Working for the Cambria County Association for the Blind and Handicapped (CCABH) these guys get to work in a culture that supports the vision, rehabilitation, and employment services to persons with disabilities living in Cambria County, Pennsylvania. At the same time, they manufacture a wide variety of high-quality hooks, hangers, and innovative CAB products for oil and gas customers worldwide. In my view, these are the true heroes of our time!

if this model could eliminate the epidemic of homelessness in North America and help the man who stole my heart under the bridge an hour ago. We can all learn from companies like CAB who thrive on inclusion and diversity. We can all do good and be an incredible contribution to our people in creative ways. I’m inspired to follow suit. Are you?

The supply base for the oil and gas industry is one of the largest in the world. Creating companies and organizations that support inclusion, diversity, people with special abilities, and those with disadvantages, is just about as perfect as it gets.

I’m not sure but my father passed away four years ago, and one of his great sayings was, “This is all a part of life’s rich pattern.” I have it tattoed on my arm. Thanks CAB, I now have a deeper understanding of what that meant.

I thought about all the purchasing that happens in the oil and gas industry worldwide, and I imagined a world where companies got preference on bids if they supported the less fortunate. I wondered

That fateful day, a huge downpour turned into a simple twist of fate. Was our meeting coincidence or perfect timing?

To win in today’s hyper-competitive online world, you can’t sit back and wait for the right suppliers, employees or clients to show up! You have to adapt and digitize. You need to be able to communicate online in a way that creates an EXPERIENCE for potential clients, vendors, and employees in such a way that they intimately understand the benefits of working with you. What’s in it for them? Today, the digital world is highly competitive and winning online means being smart, digital-savvy with an excellent local and network and reach. The old model of issuing an RFP, posting a job ad, or hoping a client walks in the door no longer works and technology is the reason why. NATIVE CONTENT These days it’s all about what people can see on their phone, access on computers and tablets, or even listen to on their watch. It’s a whole new world out there and content is key. Content that supports your company culture. Content that attracts employees. Content that sells your product and services. Content that helps you meet your business goals. The first time I heard the phrase programmatic algorithms I thought it was a medical term not the future of online 62 TheOGM.com

communication. It’s the solution to matching buyers with sellers, employers with employees and messages with markets. Computers are so smart these days; they scan the web for people with the same digital footprint (or interests) as you and bring them together for mutual benefit. We’ve all seen it in action, but probably didn’t realize what it is. Remember the last time you googled your favourite vacation spot and then for about a month after you kept seeing ads from that vacation destination on the webpages you googled? That’s programmatic advertising and you can do the same thing with stories or content that relate to your business offerings. These days, you can create content that supports your business goals by reaching highly targeted and relevant viewers. Real-time algorithm-driven content is pushed to potential buyers, vendors, partners, clients or employees, who have an interest in what you are doing. It’s called native content marketing and it works! Native programmatic content is the solution to attracting key clients, employees and suppliers are now accessed through Programatic Technology. In other words, allowing computers to do the work for you by tracking the digital footprint of users with one thing in common...mutual interest. In other words, they have been searching for what you are selling.

Because of programmatic algorithms, it is now possible to reach local and global markets for a fraction of the cost, giving you more options, lower engagement costs, optimizing your processes and creating unparalleled global access. Through highly strategic content development disseminated online, you can paint a picture that reaches people at a much deeper level. Through aggregated content, you can now reach thousands of online publications around the globe with the push of a button. Never before have we been able to avail of such a global reach and tap into so many unknown and viable markets! It’s pioneering, and it’s exciting. Business is nothing more than a network of conversations. It’s all about communication power, and programmatic algorithms are the way of the future and the way to business power. Supporting native content sytems like Outbrain allow for a whole new level of content dissemination reaching hundreds if not thousands of other publishers sites online. Imagine reading the New York times and seeing your story pop up on the front page. These day’s everyone’s New York Times is different based on the things they search for! Wow!

With programmatic technology, you can now attract vendors in as little as a month, reach over 1 million relevant, specific, targetted, viewers around the globe! Unprecedented. For the oil and gas industry in Canada it is the possibility of bringing people back home to work on the greatest projects in Atlantic Canada through superior online communications employee-attraction, native-content tools! The strategy is to always be in the readers world. Supply them with value, value and more value in their reader experience. Solve and issue for them, give them some advice, offer a free consult and then you have a qualified client for life! Your job is to figure out how to utilize strategic experiential content that converts to a sale by generating qualified leads from clients who really care/want your product and services. At The OGM we have diversified and digitalized to support clients in the new ‘digital era’ with a game-changing solution procurement, hiring and sales. Let us know if you’d like a free consult and we’ll teach you precisely how it can work for your company’s success: tinaolivero@theogm.com

How to Eat Intelligently For Brainpower and Balance By AMANDA JANES - B.Comm., NNCP Registered Holistic Nutritionist | Concept Nutrition “We pursue career goals so we can have the lifestyle we want. Unfortunately, not enough emphasis is placed on maintaining our health in pursuit of our wealth. The pressures faced at work contribute to divorce, disease, and the erosion of our mental well-being. What we think and feel (both physically and emotionally) is directly related to how we nourish ourselves. Yet in an attempt to add hours to a jam-packed day we rush to convenience and processed food that save time but are counter-productive to our health and career goals.” - Amanda Janes

THE FOUR CORNERSTONES OF INTELLIGENT EATING

•

Don’t consume refined sugar or artificial sweeteners.

The four cornerstones of INTELLIGENT EATING will re-frame how you nourish your body, sharpen your mind, and help you reclaim your busy life.

•

Do include anti-inflammatory foods like wild salmon, walnuts, pineapple, cherries, dark leafy greens, turmeric and green tea.

#1 The Gut-Brain Connection

#3 Incorporate Natural Whole Foods

There is an evolving field of research called neurogastroenterology that studies the gut-brain connection. These scientists have established that the gut-brain axis influences the chemistry of mood, emotions, and is a critical factor in overall health.

Digital-to-door dining is now a billion-dollar industry in Canada. Meal delivery apps make it easier than ever for us to rely on the convenience of take-out. This trend is detrimental to our health. Getting back to simple whole foods, that you prepare and cook for yourself, is the best way to support your health.

The intestinal tract, our “gut”, is home to 30 neurotransmitters including serotonin, acetylcholine and dopamine. These are the neurotransmitters that keep you sharp, attentive, motivated, and happy. Although serotonin is well known as a brain neurotransmitter, it is estimated that 90 percent of the body’s serotonin is made in the digestive tract. The gut is emerging as a critical mediator of mental health, and while there is still much to be discovered, we would be wise to make gut health a priority. Use the following dietary strategies to nourish your gut-brain axis:

If you are one of the 60% of Canadians who do not consume the minimum recommended 5 servings of fruit and vegetables daily, consider this: worldwide, 1.7 million deaths can be attributed to inadequate vegetable and fruit consumption. When you eat fruit and vegetables you consume the many cancer-fighting phytonutrients that give them their vibrant color and unique flavor. These phytonutrients will also protect your eyes, heart, brain and prostate! Try a new fruit or vegetable each week and be sure to incorporate red, yellow, orange, green, blue, purple, and even white vegetables daily.

•

Include fermented foods (sauerkraut, kefir, tempeh, and kombucha) to increase beneficial bacteria.

#4 Increase nutrition during times of stress

•

Foods high in fibre: whole grains, nuts, fruits and vegetables contain prebiotics that feed beneficial gut bacteria.

•

Get adequate Omega 3 fat from sources such as salmon, flax, walnuts.

•

Tryptophan (salmon, poultry, and eggs) is used by the body to produce serotonin.

•

Polyphenols in cocoa, green tea, olive oil and coffee are digested by gut bacteria and help to improve cognition.

#2 Enjoy an Anti-inflammatory Diet Choosing an anti-inflammatory diet is nutritional multi-tasking at its finest. All aspects of your health will benefit. Reducing inflammation will keep your joints limber, brain sharp, and arteries clear. I speak from personal experience when I say nothing is more stressful than when your life is interrupted by a significant health event. Eating well is one of the most powerful ways to reduce your risk of disease so you can continue towards your goal of living life to the fullest. The do’s and don’ts of an anti-inflammatory diet: •

Don’t eat processed and convenience food. They are loaded with inflammatory fats, salt, sugar, and preservatives.

•

Do reduce consumption of animal products to 5 to 8 servings per week and choose wild game, grass-fed beef, and organic poultry products whenever possible.

66 TheOGM.com

By age 40, about 50% of the population will have or have had a mental illness. In fact, psychological health problems are the number one cause of disability in Canada and cost the Canadian economy about $51 billion per year. Everyday stress may be unavoidable for most professionals so it is imperative we learn how to manage it effectively and support the body with good nutrition during stressful times. Stress shuts down digestion, prevents the proper assimilation of nutrients and will deplete magnesium, vitamin C, zinc, and B vitamins. These nutrients are essential for your immune system and are used to make the neurotransmitters that keep us happy, healthy and productive. In times of stress, your body requires additional nutrients to handle the demands placed on it. So do not take nutritional shortcuts on your busiest days – it is then that your body needs optimal nourishment. Final thoughts: Prioritize and plan for good nutrition. Good nutrition is an investment in your health and success. Make meal planning and preparation a priority – it will save time and allow you to get organized, shop efficiently and optimize your chances of success. If time doesn’t exist for proper meal planning, enlist the services of a professional nutritionist who can help you destress by designing a health-supporting meal plan for you. Eating intelligently means focusing on gut health, reducing inflammation and supporting your body with an unprocessed, whole-food diet. These cornerstones will provide a foundation for good health, maximum brain power at work and optimal balance at home.

HAVE YOU EVER? By Tina Olivero

Have you ever taken a deep-sea dive and travelled back in time to the history of days gone by? Have you ever looked eye to eye with a whale as it breaches the surface of the water and just know something magical just happened? Have you ever taken a sea kayak trip into the caves and under the waterfalls? These are some of the things that happen at Ocean Quest Adventures as you discover Newfoundland. Come on, let’s go discovering.... NEWFOUNDLAND IS HOT Newfoundland is HOT with tourism enthusiasts who are looking for adventures that blow the mind. Icebergs, whales, caves, codfish, puffins and more are all a part of the majestic scenery you will see in this magical, mysterious land. These days, Newfoundland is on everyone’s bucket list as they come here to experience the unknown and Ocean Quest Adventures is only too happy to oblige. Ocean Quest is a local Newfoundland company with a well-established adventure and diving resort. It offers experiences like scuba diving, iceberg tours, a three-hour ocean

safari, sea cave adventures, and even a cod fishing extravaganza! Oh my, the sheer thrill of it all! John Olivero, Scuba Instructor and Ocean Specialist at Ocean Quest says, “Scuba diving is our passion, the rest we do for fun! On the scuba diving scene, we tour the world-famous Bell Island shipwrecks and mines. We also provide guided shore dives at various locations on the Avalon Peninsula. We have some of the best wreck diving tours in the world in these parts. Offshore Newfoundland is a scuba diver’s dream. We leave our customers with the experience of a great adventure and memories, and sometimes they are left with the feeling of great accomplishment, as some of our scuba diving trips take a lot of stamina and courage” Ocean Quest is also a PADI Instructor Development Centre. Here they train scuba divers of every level from beginners to instructors as well as tech diver training with some of the most recognized instructors in the world. ADVENTURE TOURS Ocean Quest’s Ocean Safari sightseeing trip is a designated “Canada Signature Experience.” This trip offers incredible coastlines, and if you come at the right time you will catch the whales and icebergs. Ocean Quest also offers Marine Wildlife Snorkeling, Sea Cave Adventures, Cod Fishing - Catch and Cook, Kayaking and of course Private Charters. John says, “Newfoundland is on everyone’s bucket list and they come

here to experience the unknown. But it’s mostly people that captivate CFA’s and make them want to come back time and time again.” CORPORATE TOURS Ocean Quest is famous for its private tours that provide adventurists with everything from corporate gatherings, team-building excursions, private tours, and beyond! John says, “Companies usually take our Private Charters on our Large 45 passenger Boat ‘The Mermaid.’ Companies come to have a halfday on the bay for a staff party, special event or to connect with clients in a creative way. They get to see all the wonders of Conception Bay and have a feed as we provide a delicious BBQ service, and the boat is BYOB. It’s something different for sure. Our clients may see whales, seabirds, icebergs. Whatever is on the go.” DIVE SHOP John explains, “Our service shop provides a variety of services to any company that uses compressed air. Currently, we inspect and maintain much of the Scuba Equipment used professionally in the province. We supply and service scuba equipment for a wide variety of companies and government agencies.”

GREAT EXPERIENCES Some of the greatest sights in the world happen in Newfoundland. For John, some of the highlights of his career include: “There is the Orca Whales who come and swim alongside the boat. There are times I have been less than 2 feet from a Humpback in the water. Diving on the iceberg with famous TV people. There are so many....But really the greatest experience is seeing people enjoy themselves so much! Often the people who come to us are reaching outside their comfort zone. We get them to the other side with a great adventure and a new sense of accomplishment.” Ocean Quest just keeps on expanding with the opportunities, which is excellent because Ocean Quest has grown to have a reputation as a problem solver for both in water safety and compressed air in the industrial sector as well as other industries like TV and film. John says, “Ocean Quest is Canada’s largest adventure and diving centre. Aside from adventure products we also provide in-water safety and boating services for the film/tv industry. We’ve worked with film crews like Aquaman, National Geographic, BBC, Netflix and many more. It’s been exciting for sure.” Having been with the whales myself, taken tours and seen icebergs, I’m really proud of my brother John who eats, sleeps and breathes diving and ocean adventures. If you want to take a walk on the wild side just go for it. It’s one of the most fun things you will ever do. Check them out at OceanQuestAdventures.com

Hearing Janet sing is like watching an iceberg float by off the narrows. She is everything: water, beauty, natural and feeling. The woman has soul and she’s not afraid to share it with us. That takes guts.

6. What does it take to be successful?

For her most recent musical works, Janet has won three MusicNL awards: FACTOR Album of the Year, Female Artist of the Year and Pop/ Rock Artist of the Year.

The music business is a tricky one. The most important thing for me is to be true to myself and do what it is I WANT...not necessarily what someone else thinks you SHOULD do to be successful.

Janet was selected as Singer Universe’s Best Vocalist of the Month and was the only Canadian winner (Vocal Performance Category) of the 2017 Unsigned Only International Competition. Janet’s “Island Soul Tour” was a smashing success with local Newfoundland shows as well as travelling to other places of the world. She’s had a blast!

Success means different things to different people. My biggest success without a doubt is my beautiful son Jack. It’s very important to me that he grows up knowing his mommy stuck to her guns and produced and released music she is very proud of. There’s always more to learn as a performer/artist. You never stop learning.....I LOVE that!

Now with two award-winning albums to her credit, Janet is taking the world by storm, simply doing what she loves to do the most, ‘feeling’ all that life is and is not, and sharing that with people. For those in the energy industry, who would like to book Janet privately for a special event, she is available and you would be incredibly lucky to have her. www.Janetcull.com At The OGM, we had the opportunity to interview Janet Cull. Here’s what she had to say: 1. Where are you from, misses?

6. What type of gigs are your favourite? I don’t really have a specific favourite gig with regards to venue whether it be a theatre, bar, etc. as long as I move my audience. When I can feel their emotion from the stage that’s what really makes me happy with my performance. The whole point is for me to feel and in turn the audience will feel it as well. 7. What’s your vision and goal for your career?

I was born and raised in St. Anthony Bight on the Great Northern Peninsula. I have however been living in St. John’s for 20 years now so this is home now.

I really just want to continue to write and perform. I just recently played in Greenland, which was absolutely AMAZING! I want to continue to tour and share my music with different people. I want to learn from other musicians and work with other artists.

2. How did you get into music?

8. What makes your music so powerful?

I began singing in church (the Salvation Army) at the age of four. I grew up in quite a musical family surrounded by music. I decided at the age of 19 to sing professionally and haven’t looked back since. It’s not a choice anymore. its a way of life!

I think what makes my performance so powerful is that I put my entire heart and soul into it. My music is coming from such an honest and sometimes very vulnerable place. It’s a way for me to connect with myself and also the audience. Music is the universal language.

3. What makes you passionate about Newfoundland?

9. What advice do you have for aspiring musicians?

Growing up near the ocean is extremely inspiring! It’s such a part of who I am. It’s the beauty and the struggle. Being an islander is so special and it’s something that only others who have grown up on an island can really understand.

Always follow your instinct. Listen to as much live music as possible. LISTENING is so important. I’ve learned so much over the years from other writers, singers, and performers. Stay true to who you are and don’t let the little things get ya down!

4. What inspires your music?

Both of Janet’s award-winning albums are available on Janetcull. com and you can also find her music on: iTunes and Spotify.

My experiences are the biggest thing that inspires my writing. I like to sing about what I live through day-to-day or even just a specific moment of my life. Music for me is feeling so that’s what I sing about.
