A long time ago in a land far away there were some people called the Romans.

And they spoke Latin.

Now we are going to see how many names of the days of the week in Spanish came from Latin.

The Romans had many Gods and Goddesses (a Goddess is a God who is a woman).

One of the Goddess was called “Luna”.

She protected the plants.

The Romans believed that when there was not moon at nigths, she left the sky to visit a sheperd (a sheperd is a man who takes care of sheps) whom she loved.

The Romans called the second day of the week after her name Luna and called “Dies Lune” which means Luna.

In Spanish we call it “Lunes”.

Another God was called Mars.

Mars was the God of war.

Before going to war, Roman troops offered sacrifices to him.

After winning a battle, they gave him a share of their spoils (things stolen).

The Romans called the third day of the week after his name MARS and called it DIES MARTIS wich means THE DAY OF MARS.

In Spanish we call it “Martes”.

Another God was called Mercurius, Mercurius was theDies God commerce, veneris property and wealth.

The Romas called the fourth day of the week after his name MERCURIUS and called it DIES MERCURI which means THE DAY OF MERCURY.

Another God was called Jupiter.

Jupiter was the God of the sky, and thunder and ligthing. He used thunderbolt as a weapon, and the power to send to Earth, clear weather, rain, o destructive storms.

The Romas called the fifth day of the week after his name JUPITER and called it DIES IOVIS wich means THE DAY OF JUPITER.

Another Goddess was called Venus.

Venus was the Goddess of love and beauty.

The Romas called the sixth day of the week after his name VENUS and called it DIES VENERIS wich means THE DAY OF VENUS.

The seventh day of the week was called after a Hebrew word (Hebrew is an ancient language spoken

by Jewish people). The word was SHABATH wich means TO REST, because this day was the day of rest of ancient Jewish people.

In Spanish we call it “Sábado”.

It was called after the Latin words DIES DOMINICA wich means THE DAY OF THE LORD.

As you can see the names of the week in Spanish were created a long time ago.
