shooting night, Micah came to practice. He wanted the team to know his disappointment.

“He didn’t even know if we could go inside the 3-point line anymore,” Page said. “’We need to start getting to the hole more and getting to the free-throw line more.’

The sad thing was, he was right. We took too many jumpers that game and didn’t get to the line near enough.”

At the end of his diatribe, Micah left the Cowboys with a final statement before walking out of the gym.

“I expect better next time,” he said.

It’s not only the team that gets to experience these talks. After a Cowboys loss, Micah will talk to anybody within earshot about it. One

evening, Kansas State coach Frank Martin happened to be on the receiving end of one of those rants. The Cowboys had lost to the Wildcats, and Micah was going through the postgame emotions that come with a loss. Martin listened as Micah vented his frustrations and, when he was done, wrapped his arm around him.

“Hey, it was just our night,” Martin said. “Your team’s really good. You’re gonna win a lot of games.”

Larry Reece, OSU’s public address anouncer, was watching and gained a newfound respect for Martin.

“Here’s the head coach of K-State consoling one of our great fans and telling him everything’s going to be all right for the Pokes,” Reece said.

Fierce competitor

At 60, Micah doesn’t get the chance to play many games of H-O-R-S-E with OSU players anymore.

A decade ago, it was a different story. Cameron, Reece and countless others can recall Micah challenging Desmond Mason and Tony Allen to games of H-O-RS-E or 21. Micah was no slouch, either.

“I beat the one who plays for the Grizzlies (Allen) now,” he said.

Those who have seen Micah shoot know he can hit certain shots with consistency, none more than from 15 feet out. Those who have fallen to Micah at H-O-R-SE can attest best. Although Reece has never played Micah in H-O-R-S-E, he has

watched plenty of games.

“It’s nothin’ but net with Micah,” Reece said. “He doesn’t mess with that rim much. He’s swishing those shots left and right.”

Page has seen it, too.

He is OSU’s career leader in 3-pointers, but he has declined each one of Micah’s requests to play H-O-R-SE. Knowing what Micah is capable of, Page doesn’t want to give him the opportunity to gloat.

Page’s freshman year was the first time he met Micah.

Page was shooting in the gym when Micah walked in and asked whether Page wanted to play a game of H-O-R-SE. Although Page said no, he let Micah shoot with him.

Before long, Page wasn’t doing much shooting.

“I think the session ended with me rebounding for Micah,” Page said. “Micah got out there and was showing me his sweet spots from the elbow and the short corner.

I ended up rebounding for Micah for about 20 to 30 minutes while he was getting some jumpers up.”

Micah lets his competitiveness show in many ways.

In addition to H-O-R-S-E games with OSU basketball players, he likes to bowl. For Micah’s 60th birthday, Reece and a few other members of the athletic department took Micah out to Mojo’s to bowl.

They gave him a new orange bowling ball, along with a bag to carry it in.

That night, it was about the fun. When it comes to the Special Olympics, it’s serious.

“I don’t care who is my friends,” Micah said. “When it comes down to the blue ribbon or gold medal, all that’s out the door. I take care of business.”

Micah competes in the bowling and 3-on-3 basketball competitions every year.

In the past, he has competed in track and field races. He recalls a time when he hurt his ankle in a race but won.

“Yeah, I’m tough,” he said.

One morning, Page woke up and got ready to drive to Gallagher-Iba Arena to get some work done. When he walked outside, he heard a basketball bouncing. He looked two houses down and saw someone shooting on a basketball goal in the driveway. He found it odd because he had never seen anyone use

the goal before.

He went to investigate and find out who this mystery person playing basketball was. When he got closer, he saw it was Micah, with his bike thrown to the side. Page said hello and started to get rebounds for him. After awhile, he asked Micah why he was out here shooting baskets on a goal in a neighborhood where he did not live.

He discovered Micah was riding his bike through the neighborhood when he saw the goal and a basketball lying in the front yard. He had 3-on-3 basketball coming up for the Special Olympics and decided he needed to get some shots up.

Although many people will watch Bedlam football Saturday in Norman, Micah will be in Gallagher-Iba Arena to cheer on the Cowgirls when they face Georgia.

“They’re from the SEC,” Micah said. “It will be a big test for the Cowgirls.”

He packs up his things and starts to go. He will ride his bike home, carrying his things. He will keep himself busy by watching “Murder She Wrote” or Christmas movies until the next game when he will show up wearing the same jersey and jotting down results in the same notebook. It’s a wonderful routine, one that brings him happiness. He knows he is

doing what he was always meant to do: be a Cowboys fan.

Perhaps there is something we can all learn from Micah, Cameron said.

“Micah lives such a great life,” he said. “He doesn’t have a care in the world. To watch him win or lose, as competitive as he is, he stays the same. He’s on to the next one. I think we could all probably learn a little something from him in that regard. Be happy in life. It’s too short.”

planned to open up once he got to campus. He was sure the environment in Stillwater was similar to the one he feared in high school.

It wasn’t until he arrived he discovered the opposite was true.

On campus, Reyes immediately felt at ease. He saw students from many different backgrounds,

races, religions and sexualities. Finally, he felt comfortable.

“Even on moving day, I could feel a difference,” Reyes said. “I don’t know how to explain it, but this place just has an air about it that’s more welcoming.”

pride in that welcoming environment.

“I think a lot of LGBTQ students have experienced a lot of mistreatment before they’ve got here,” Baxter said. “I think it’s important that they have a place where they can feel loved and accepted.”

Reyes is the treasurer for Oklahoma State Queers & Allies. OSQ&A aims

to create a space where LGBT students can feel comfortable and free to express themselves.

Through his time in OSQ&A, Reyes has fully embraced his sexuality and made close friends with others in the organization. Preston Phillips is the president of OSQ&A STORY CONTINUEs on page 5

and has seen firsthand Reyes’ transformation.

“It’s great to see him becoming more comfortable with himself in an environment where he can make friends,” Phillips said.

Despite the progress Reyes and his fellow LGBT students have experienced on campus, the real world always finds a way to sneak back in. The part of society that made Reyes afraid to accept his sexuality — made him put on a mask to hide from the world — is ever present.

As Bedlam week began, a sign was found hanging from the steps of the OSU Student Union. Words of hate were written across

it. The target of its message isn’t the LGBT community, but nonetheless the members feel its sting.

The sign read: “Baker Mayfield and Dede Westbrook bang dudes.”

It was written as an attack against University of Oklahoma football and its two star players.

Instead, it alienates only the LGBT community and pushes them further to the outskirts of society.

Still, LGBT students will move forward.

They’re no strangers to this type of speech.

Reyes doesn’t know what to expect once he leaves OSU, but he’s more comfortable in his own skin. Now, he realizes he isn’t different from everyone else, not really.

“It’s definitely not perfect for people like me out there,” Reyes said. “But we’re making progress, and I think I’m ready for it.”
