I knew Kevin Durant was gone.

Whether it was this year or the next, the end of his time as Mr. Thunder was near.

I had come to terms with that thought and was already planning for the future. He was being wooed by the Celtics, Heat, Clippers (haha), Spurs, Warriors and the Thunder.

When free agency officially began July 1, there were numerous reports of the whirlwind meetings in the Hamptons Durant was holding. Reports of the Clippers “blowing him away” and

the Celtics enlisting Mr. Gisele Bundchen himself, Tom Brady, to entice Durant were many.

I wasn’t afraid of the Clippers, Heat or Spurs. I didn’t think I was afraid of the Warriors, and I loved the Celtics idea. If Durant had to go to any team outside of Oklahoma City, it was Boston.

They’re young, they have a good culture and coach in Brad Stevens, plus good ole Marcus Smart was there.

It seemed like a great fit and perhaps even a done deal.

Then I was awoken by a text Monday morning to check the Player’s Tribune.

Durant had made his decision. Because of the immense traffic to the site, I couldn’t go to it right away so I checked Twitter and thought, “Oh, no KD, what have you brought upon yourself?”

have maintained his respect with his old team and the rest of the NBA while winning that elusive championship. Now, he’s no better than LeBron in 2010. KD went about it the right way, too. Posting a simple, heartfelt article on the Player’s Tribune (which has some really good writing), no “What Should I Do?” villain commercial and no long wait to drag it out for fans and more importantly, GMs. Yet, it was the wrong team.

Even when LeBron went to the Heat, it wasn’t easy. Dwyane Wade was already on the back nine and Chris Bosh was the definite Ringo of the bunch. Plus, Wade was the only one assimilated in the culture. Durant enters a situation where every starter is still at the height of his powers, aside from a slightly diminished Andre

Iguodala.

It is not the high road; it is the road more frequently taken. A brief two-year $54.3 million contract gives hope to Thunder fans that someday he will return. But that might never happen. The Warriors culture is overpowering. A new-age Baylor of the NBA crowd full of hipster fans and shiny new arenas could sway Durant to extend his stay.

Thunder GM Sam Presti knows this.

Originally thought to have gotten some of his joie de vivre back after the Serge Ibaka swindle of the Magic on draft night, Presti is back to square one.

Granted, he gave Durant a reason to stay.

Victor Oladipo was arguably Orlando’s franchise player, Russell Westbrook was still there along the Stache Bros of Enes Kanter and Steven Adams who would take care of the heavy lifting for Durant.

It wasn’t a Cleve-

land team full of Jamario Moons and Delonte Wests that LeBron fled. The Thunder were a possible title contender.

However, once Draymond Green got ahold of Durant, there was no turning back.

Rather than spend an awkward month in the Rio Olympics with a guy who could be Debo’s right-hand man in “Friday,” Durant decided to join him.

So Presti and Oklahoma City are facing what they’ve never faced before: rebuilding. A glimmer of hope remains if Westbrook decides to stay, which he won’t.

Why would he? The only thing the city offers to him anymore is the small amount of media. Westbrook can mostly keep to himself here. If he goes to L.A., the paparazzi will hound him day and night.

However, fair weather fans looking to Westbrook for comfort, he remembers you.

Westbrook remembers when he came in 2008 with people calling for him to be benched or traded (I was one of them) and now that he’s the only one left from those days, they will look for something to latch onto.

Like the passedover girl at the senior prom, though, Westbrook got tired of waiting. His bags are packed and soon, very soon, he will be leaving on a jet plane.

When Westbrook leaves, the Thunder can prolong the inevitable for a bit.

The championship window is closed, though. Its time has

passed. When the annals of history are written, this Thunder team will go somewhere beneath the ‘90s Utah Jazz and above the 2000s Phoenix Suns.

Whether Durant decided to leave this summer or the next, the end was near.

The “family” has been split up and sent across the NBA. The only thing Presti could have hoped for was Durant would go anywhere but the Warriors and maybe, just maybe, the Thunder still had a fighting chance.

That dream is over.

Thunder fans will find out the meaning of

the word “tank” in a few years, the NBA (like a collective Princess Leia) will look to LeBron as the only hope to vanquish the Warriors, but lightning won’t strike twice. Like a 2K team with the sliders turned all the way up, the Warriors will make mincemeat of every team and soon, it will be unwatchable.

KD, you did enough for this state to last a lifetime, but with one fell swoop you have ruined the NBA and your legacy. I hope you know the consequences.

Just more than a week after the Oklahoma State baseball team’s 2016 season ended, the Cowboys are left with plenty of questions in their 2017 lineup.

Tuesday, Oklahoma State shortstop Donnie Walton signed with the Mariners. He and designated hitter Conor Costello were the Cowboys’ only two drafted seniors.

Walton was Seattle’s fifth-round pick, and Costello has begun his career with the Dodgers after being drafted as a pitcher in the 32nd round.

Of the 11 Cowboys drafted, nine were left with a decision of whether to return to OSU for another shot at the College World Series.

Five of those nine have already made their choice.

Andrew Rosa may be the favorite to take Davis’ place.

Garrett McCain should replace Corey Hassel in the outfield, while the left-handed Colin Simpson has the look of a designated hitter. Catcher Collin Theroux and first baseman Dustin Williams were drafted, both beyond the 30th round, and seem likely to return to boost their draft stock.

On the mound, Reed, a strikeout artist out of the OSU bullpen, signed with the Marlins as their sixth-round pick Tuesday.

Mertz, the Marlins’ 14th-round selection, was the Cowboys’ midweek starter for most of the season.

Besides Walton, who was the face of the program, Hatch is the Cowboys’ biggest departure. The Big 12 Pitcher of the Year

Williams, despite his inconsistencies, is brilliant when everything is right. A projected first-round pick out of high school, his struggles with command continued in his junior season. ‘The BFG’ is a lovely, cinematic daydream

My first thought while watching “The BFG” is that this film has absolutely no reason to exist. Over the past twenty years, exactly three never-beforeadapted Roald Dahl tales have been brought to the big screen.

“Matilda” (1996) was rather well-received, but Henry Selick’s “James and the Giant Peach” (1996) was pretty much a box-office failure while Wes Anderson’s “Fantastic Mr. Fox” (2009) was only a moderate financial success, masterpiece though it may be.

Furthermore, director Steven Spielberg has largely stepped away from the types of family films that have become synonymous with his production company Amblin Entertainment.

Instead, the master filmmaker has spent most of this decade flexing his “adult drama” chops with the likes of “Lincoln” (2012) and “Bridge of Spies” (2015), two perfect historical dramas which investigate the resilience of basic American decency with a light and hopeful touch foreign to nearly any major filmmaker post-Capra.

Viewers would have to be foolish or willfully ignorant, however, to imagine that WEDNESDAY, JULY 6, 2016

Spielberg could not easily step back onto the throne of touching genre fiction. The man who brought us “Jaws,” “Jurassic Park,” and “E.T.” navigates differing cinematic avenues like a historied getaway driver, and as such, he was the perfect choice to conjure up some wit, an unforgettable friendship, and a little bit of unbridled compassion for Dahl’s fanciful yarn about a big, friendly, farting giant. (For anyone unfamiliar with the source material: Yes. You did read that correctly.)

Precocious orphan Sophie is always awake at three in the morning, locking the orphanage’s doors, shooing

away loudly singing drunks from an upstairs window, and minding her own personal set of rules meant to keep her safe from whatever foul spirits might whisper through the night air.

In a moment of weak curiosity, she gets out of bed to investigate some distant evening rumblings and is promptly snatched by an old, galumphing behemoth who immediately whisks her away to Giant Country.

Quickly after Sophie and her lumbering guardian become comfortable with one another, the film’s central conflict comes into play. BFG may be a kindhearted fantasy figure, but the other

inhabitants of Giant Country are man-eaters.

Sophie hatches a plan to take down the vicious Fleshlumpeater and his gang of dim-witted monsters, a silly scheme involving a literal nightmare and the Queen herself.

But dramatic structure is not the film’s strong suit. “The BFG” mostly bounces from scene to scene, some slightly overstaying their welcome, some leaving you begging for more. Almost none of them come together in a truly causal chain; this is a film that feels like a collection of episodes even though the whole plot only seems to last a day or two at the most. That sounds like

a rather harsh criticism, but under Spielberg’s directorial hand, the glorious movie magic never lets up. Scenes of Sophie convincing BFG to take her through Giant Country, or of BFG doing his nightly work as a dream catcher, work like gangbusters.

Conflict would feel inherently tacked-on in a story like this; it’s so concerned with friendship and togetherness that you feel perfectly fine coasting along with its easygoing flow, meandering though it may sometimes be.

So, “The BFG” is flawed throughout but still never less than perfect in terms of its willingness to let a tired dramatic structure be

subordinate to a sense of emotional intimacy that remains mostly unmatched by other family fantasy films.

Kids will be enamored with Spielberg’s film, but so should most open-minded adults.

As a cinephile in the wake of the deaths of the masterful Abbas Kiarostami and the misunderstood Michael Cimino, I turn to rich pictures likes this, those that can make cinema feel bright and eternal for all ages and tastes.

You will find no fantasy more heartwarming and reassuring than “The BFG.” Entertainment @ocolly.com

‘Legend of Tarzan’ lacks the Ape Man’s energy

Excluding an obscure CGI movie from 2013, Disney’s “Tarzan” from 1999 is now the second most recent big-screen adaptation of the ape man’s adventures. That said, throughout the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, another entry releases seemingly every other year.

The height of the character’s popularity might be long behind him, but considering that he has become a staple of popular culture, he’ll likely just continue to receive new interpretations.

Coming off of his success with the final four “Harry Potter” movies -- and just a few months before he returns to that world with “Fantastic Beasts

and Where to Find Them” -- director David Yates adds his contribution with “The Legend of Tarzan.”

With his reign as the Lord of the Apes well behind him, John Clayton (Alexander Skarsgard) has more or less grown accustomed to his life in London.

However, upon hearing word that Belgian King Leopold’s forces might be engaging in nefarious activities in the Congo, Clayton finds himself drawn back to his former home. Along with his wife, Jane (Margot Robbie), and politician George Washington Williams (Samuel L. Jackson), Clayton returns to Africa in an effort to protect his family.

Right off the bat, “Legend” attempts to

provide a fresh take on the Tarzan mythos.

The movie could have easily played it safe and re-told that traditional story: boy is raised by apes, Tarzan meets Jane, and so on.

Instead, this film sidesteps most of that. Key moments from Tarzan’s past are touched upon in brief flashbacks spread throughout the movie.

This is an adaptation that at least wants to be about something more.

Without spoiling anything, I get the sense that “Legend” wants to say something about Tarzan re-discovering himself. However, this theme isn’t properly explored throughout the film’s 110-minute runtime.

Speaking of which, this flick feels a heck of a lot longer than it

is. Seriously, it moves along at a snail’s pace.

It’s not as if I need Tarzan to fight a gorilla every five minutes, though. 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” for instance, is an excellent example of a relatively quiet summer blockbuster -- a movie that seamlessly blends human drama with sporadic yet thrilling action set pieces.

The movie has a few narrative threads that could make for a more interesting movie, including one involving Chief Mbonga’s (Djimon Hounsou) past with Tarzan. This subplot is especially frustrating, though, as it’s given a whopping total of two scenes.

Despite the film’s talented cast, their characters are dull and one-note virtu-

ally across the board.

Skarsgard tries to add some charisma to the titular ape man, but the script barely allows for him to go beyond the man-of-few-words persona.

Christoph Waltz is one of my favorite actors working today, but even he can’t make the film’s mustache-twirling villain compelling.

He adds a couple of quirks to the character throughout the movie, but it’s not enough.

The lone exception is Jackson’s turn as Williams. Effectively a lighter extension of his character from “Hateful Eight,” he brings an energy and a sense of humor to an otherwise monotonous movie.

“Legend” doesn’t even work as a turnyour-brain-off spectacle. Its idea of an action

scene is typically over shortly after it begins.

These sequences -- if you can even call them that -- are so brief that they feel shoehorned in to meet some sort of summer blockbuster quota.

This extends to the film’s climax, which goes too far in the other direction. Not only does it throw suspension of disbelief out the window, but it also feels tonally inconsistent from the rest of the movie. At least it’s entertaining in a schlocky, so-bad-it’sgood kind of way.

I know what “Legend” could have used.

I mean, if Disney’s adaptation taught us anything, it’s that a little bit of Phil Collins goes a long way.

Sexual Assault investigated at Farmhouse fraternity; no members present

Stillwater police are investigating a reported sexual assault that occurred in the Farmhouse fraternity house June 25.

The assault was reported early June 29, and reportedly occurred between 9:30 and 11:30 p.m. on June 25, according to a police public incident report. The incident was classified as forcible fondling, including child molestation.

The house is leased to Upward Bound for the summer, a federally funded program through Oklahoma State Uni-

versity’s diversity office, according to a statement from OSU. “We are supporting the local officials as they look into this matter,” the statement said. “When the program organizers learned of the incident, they did the right thing by promptly notifying the local authorities.”

OSU’s Farmhouse chapter made national headlines in 2012 and 2013 when former member and OSU student Nathan Cochran was accused of sexually assaulting other male students. Cochran pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual battery in September 2013.

During the investigation of the Cochran case, OSU was criticized for not releasing Cochran’s name to the police after the

university had completed its own student conduct hearing earlier that year when several victims reported the assaults the student conduct office.

A board of regents review later found OSU misinterpreted the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act in withholding that information from police.

Oklahoma State University’s award-winning student newspaper has served Stillwater and the campus community since 1895. The O’Colly is a real newsroom that prepares students for a professional career in journalism.

We publish Wednesdays in the summer.

The O’Colly is independent from the university and entirely student run, with more than 100 students on payroll. A staff of three professionals advise, guide, educate and provide support.

In 2015, the O’Colly was honored for the fourth year in a row as Oklahoma’s best college newspaper by the Oklahoma Press Association.
