Eskimo Joe’s and Mexico Joe’s may be looking for a new name soon.

An online petition-- which has over 1,100 signatures as of Monday-- is asking the Stillwater-based company to change

the branding of both Eskimo Joe’s and Mexico Joe’s, citing racial insensitivity.

“People of color shouldn’t be seen as caricatures or used as mascots,” the petition read. “It’s damaging for children to see themselves depicted as ugly or dehumanized. These depictions parallel the racist ads,

mascots, and cartoons of Native Americans, Asians, and Africans.

The Inuit and Mexican people are not to be exploited for these restaurants’ branding.”

The logo features a caricature of an “Eskimo,” which is a word assigned to Indigenous groups by non-natives.

Eskimo Joe’s owner Stan Clark responded to the petition on Monday, stating that the company is “evaluating the path forward for our company and our brand.”

“We’re not trying to make these restaurants go away,” Hayton wrote. “Racism is nuanced, and it can come from an innocent place. But this insensitivity contradicts the positive impact these businesses have on the

community. We ask the owner, Stan Clark, for a total rebranding of Eskimo Joe’s and Mexico Joe’s that removes this dehumanizing imagery and the slur ‘Eskimo.’”

Eskimo Joe’s has been located in Stillwater since 1975 and has always had the same name.

Fans of the popular Stillwater restaurant Eskimo Joe’s are divided on a potential name change.

On Monday, an online petition started circu-

lating with the goal of changing the name of both Eskimo Joe’s and Mexico Joe’s. In response to this, an Eskimo Joe’s fan decided to make his own petition to keep the name intact.

“Eskimo Joe’s (1975) and Mexico Joe’s (1987) have been a tradition in

Stillwater, Oklahoma for many years,” the petition read. “Now, there are people trying to change everything. There are people literally signing a petition to attempt to try to get the name and logos of these restaurants changed claiming that they are racist and of-

fensive to Eskimo people and minorities. These restaurants are far from racist and offensive.

In its first day of being posted, the petition already garnered over 11,000 signatures online.

It’s no surprise that the Oklahoma State defense is setting up to be arguably the best it has ever been.

The OSU defense is returning 10 of the 11 starters on defense from a year ago. The only departure was cornerback A.J. Green.

Kolby Harvell-Peel is being talked about in the Thorpe award race, Amen Ogbongbemiga is one of the best linebackers in the nation, but where is Tre Sterling in all this hype?

Although Sterling is one of the best players on this Jim Knowles defense, he is constantly overlooked.

Sterling will be a redshirt junior for the Cowboys in 2020 and will continue to ruin opposing quarterbacks’ days with fellow safety Harvell-Peel.

will be put to the test in 2020 when the Cowboys have arguably the best safety duo in the conference, if not the country.

boys played multiple safeties over the season, but the main three were HarvellPeel, Sterling and Jarrick Bernard.

With Harvell-Peel cemented into a star role after earning first team preseason All-Big 12 and Bernard moving to a corner role Sterling will have an even bigger role than he did in 2019.

Sterling has great open field tackling ability and speed from the secondary.

He also provides great ability to blitz and fill run gaps better than most safeties in the country.

Sterling also has great coverage skills and provides a great option to cover receivers in both man and zone coverage.

In 2019, Sterling allowed the third fewest yards per catch allowed in coverage among all Division I defensive backs at 7.7 yards per catch to opposing receivers.

With all the hype surrounding the 2020 Cowboy football team and after being snubbed from the Jim Thorpe award watch list, this could be the year that Sterling finally receives the recognition he deserves.
