Corey Kent White sits in the green room in the second story of Eskimo Joe’s. He’s tired from his performance, because the tour he’s on doesn’t give him much of a chance for rest. But he wouldn’t want to do anything else.

White, an Oklahoma State graduate, and 2015 contestant on “The Voice” has been on a tour for the charity Folds of Honor. Monday night, his route took him through his old stomping grounds of Stillwater to kick off

Eskimo Joe’s 41st Anniversary Week.

White said that when Joe’s general manager Tim Holland called him to be the opening act for Stoney Larue, he didn’t hesitate.

“Tim knows I’m a huge Stoney Larue fan and it was a no-brainer for me,” White said. “Tim said, ‘I don’t know how much money you will get if there’s any money at all’ and I said, ‘I don’t really care, let’s book it and worry about that on the back end.’”

For White, though, it’s more than getting to work with Larue or coming back to Stillwater. It’s for Folds of Honor. Founded in 2007 by Stillwater native Major Dan Rooney, Folds of Honor is a national organization dedicated to giving supporting spouses and children of fallen and wounded soldiers.

White said it was perfect for him to play at Joe’s because that was when his love for the philanthropy first took root.

Folds of Honor holds a special place in his heart.

“I have a fundamental understanding that freedom is not free,” Holland said. “Because I did not serve myself, I feel this an opportunity to serve those that served. …

Because the foundation is based here in Oklahoma, we felt it was a great opportunity to align ourselves to their mission.

We’ve been able to leverage the big grin for the greater good. We see so many transient guests visiting from all over the place and it’s a wonderful opportunity to expose the Folds of Honor to a really big audience.

Before the benefit concert, Clark presented a check for $15,000 to the Folds of Honor foundation

and said it’s only the beginning of what he hopes to be more money down the road for the philanthropy.

Holland said it’s all part of a week he thinks represents all the work the employees do all year round and helps give back to a community that has supported Joe’s for such a long time.

“We want something that appeals to everyone in Anniversary Week,” Holland said.

“We really just try to diversify the week with a lot of great features and a lot of fun events. We have woven philanthropy into our celebration and love giving back to those causes.”

Black Lives Matter gives OSU chance for discussion

Capt​. Leon Jones of the Oklahoma State U ​ niversity ​ Police Department wanted everyone ​with concerns a​ bout racial inequality they might face, to come directly to him.

Monday’s Black Lives Matter event in the Student Union gave him a​ chance to do just that.

Jones and other members of the OSU community sat at a table i​ n front of about 200 audience members​d​ iscussing recent nationwide events of police shootings and violence.

In the meeting, audience members got a chance to ask Jones’ take on the recent events and also bring up concerns they had over how the OSUPD will act in light of these events. Jones had the same answers​​ each time for every-

one to hear. If ​anyone had a problem with one of the officers or anything in general, to come to him personally and he would take care of it.

Jones said the discussion really ​allowed him to tell the public about the police department’s side of the story. Jones said that Black Lives Matter was founded to be a discussion like it was Monday.

“It is very important for us,” Jones said.

“It’s going to help with diversity when we do things like this. Word of mouth spreads to other people so you might have

a friend that’s ​b​lack or Asian who you can tell that this is a great place. The context of Black Lives Matter, there’s a big misconception about it because somewhere the message got lost.

It started out like this (meeting) but now it’s kind of like a backand-forth between people and police.

“The last few weeks with all these events have been really terrible​. We’ve had to take a step back and take a breath and regroup. This gives us a chance to do that without everybody having to yell and make a point.”

Elmore-Sanders said she was glad Jones got to come to the event. Initially when she started planning it, she didn’t know how many people were going to be able to show up. But in the end, Elmore-Sanders didn’t have to worry about it.

“People will come if we provide the opportunity and as you’ve seen, we had an excellent turnout,” Elmore-Sanders said.

Aside from Jones, other speakers included Jason Kirksey, OSU’s vice president of ​​institutional​diversity, Pastor James Reed of the Mosaic Community Church

and student representative James Sullivan, among others.

Sullivan, a sports media ​senior, said Elmore-Sanders championed the meeting as a chance to be proactive instead of reactive to the national events.

Elmore-Sanders ​said she would love to have more and more of these discussions in the future.

“She’s like the mom to all of us black students on campus,” Sullivan said. “She really cares about us regardless of whether there is violence in the nation.” news@ocolly.com

Bowlsby, coaches, players weigh in on Baylor

DALLAS - Bob Bowlsby said it and the whole room was caught off guard.

“Baylor has been very forthcoming and I don’t have any doubt they will continue to be forthcoming,” he said.

If there’s anything Baylor has not been during the recent scandal that resulted in the firing of coach Art Briles, it’s transparent. The university, so

far, has not released a comprehensive report of the findings.

Information has been restricted to a few individuals within the university.

At the end of a monthlong investigation, Baylor published a 13-page summary, which the board produced.

But Bowlsby’s comment, as baffling as it was, was only the beginning. The Big 12 commissioner was asked what he meant by saying Baylor had been forthcoming.

“That’s not quite what I said,” he replied.

The confusion continued.

Bowlsby responded to a later question with, “Yeah, we get more (information) than the public. There

isn’t any doubt about that. We already have more than the public on an oral basis.”

The next question he said, “I know what you know.”

Clearly, Bowslby was trying to answer questions as gingerly as he could, but he ended up contradicting himself. No one wants

to touch the Baylor scandal. Not even other coaches.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy likened talking about the situation to discussing politics or religion.

“There is not anything that any of us can say other than we have confidence in our league that we will do everything possible to try to make the best decisions possible,” he said. “We’ve had a pretty unique way of running things in our program. We have a lot of confidence in it and we always try to do the best we can.”

Gundy tries to preach that to his players in practice. Receiver James Washington has soaked in the lessons.

“Every day after practice, coach Gundy always tells us that

domestic violence, things like that, he can’t save you from it,” Washington said. Basically, what he tells us to do, if you ever get into an argument with a girl, just turn and run. I don’t know if guys turn and run, but they definitely leave it alone.

“That’s just something that Oklahoma State’s preached to us every single day, and we take accountability and get it done.”

TCU coach Gary Patterson and Briles had been pitted against each other in some epic games. In 2014, the Bears erased a 21-point deficit to beat TCU 61-58. But Patterson remained mute when asked about Briles and Baylor.

“Baylor is a good university,” he said.

“… They’re a good football program, and they’ve got a lot of good players coming back. I don’t see that changing much.”

Later, a reporter asked specifically about Briles. Patterson was blunt.

“Baylor’s not my problem,” he said.

“TCU’s my problem.”

Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said it’s impossible for coaches to monitor what their players are doing all the time. The only thing that can be done is to talk to players about accountability and holding each other to it.

“It definitely made every coach in America take a step back and say, ‘OK, what can we do better in that area?’” he said. sports@ocolly.com

Big 12 announces expansion initiative

DALLAS — The Big 12 is officially interested in expansion.

Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby and Oklahoma president David Boren announced the Big 12 board of directors gave Bowlsby the green light to “actively evaluate” universities with potential of

joining the conference.

Several universities have contacted the Big 12 and expressed a desire to join the 10-team league, and rumblings of the confernce’s expansion have been heard for months. Tuesday marked the Big 12’s official mutual interest.

“We try to keep an eye on the changing environment at all times, and we did want to be brought up to date in terms of potential impact that the ACC matter could have,” Boren said.

Gundy talks football, but mullet steals show

DALLAS — Mike Gundy strode into Dallas’ Omni Hotel with a quartet of his players in tow and the Arkansas Waterfall on the back on his neck.

At Big 12 Media Days, Gundy fielded questions not only about the product Oklahoma State would put on the football field this fall, but also the short mullet draping from his head.

“I love it,” receiver James Washington said.

“It’s not long enough, I don’t think. He said he’s going for the ’60s surfboarder look.”

Gundy’s spiky top remains, but he’s let it grow long in the back. The new hairdo stemmed from an argument with his 11-year-old son, Gage, where the youngest of Gundy’s three sons wasn’t doing exactly what his father wanted him to do. “‘If you don’t want to do that, I just won’t cut my hair,’” Gundy told him. “… The 11-year-

But Gundy charged forward, commenting on what he’s learned about Sanders in the short time since he transferred from Stanford.

“I haven’t been around Junior much,” Gundy said. “… I know that he’s a college graduate. I know that he’s mature. That he’s dependable, seems to be durable. He came from a winning program and from an offense that obviously runs the football. So we’re excited about him being a part of our team.”

After OSU’s running game underperformed last season, Sanders

could be a big part of a turnaround. But don’t call him Junior.

“I’m excited about getting out there with him in August and seeing just what he can do for our football team,” Gundy said.

Better O-line key to running game, protecting Rudolph

When Gundy was asked about his team’s running game last season at Big 12 Media Days, he didn’t hesitate to point out that the reporter was soft on him.

“You’re being nice and saying we ‘struggled’ with the running game,” Gundy said.

“We weren’t very good at all.”

Gundy placed responsibility for 2015’s poor showing on the ground on both the offensive

line and his core of running backs. He said continuity with his offensive lineman should improve a position that has been one of trouble for OSU the past couple of seasons.

“I know we have more continuity this year than we’ve had in the last two years and in offensive line play that helps,” Gundy said.”

We have more size and strength and that’s going to help. I feel like we’ll cover guys up.”

With quarterback J.W. Walsh finishing his eligibility, it also becomes more important to protect Mason Rudolph.

“We won’t handle Mason any different,” Gundy said. “… It’s no question that it’s very important for us to keep Mason healthy.”

In 2017, the Big 12 will add a conference championship game, enabling it to play a 13th game like the other four Power 5 conferences in hopes of securing a place in the College Football Playoff.

Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said the conference is discussing dividing the conference into divisions, though he isn’t sure how the teams will be organized. Performance and geography could be factors, while the divisions may be rotational or permanent.

Gundy said he believed the conference would make the best decision for its teams.

“I have a lot of faith in the Big 12 office, our presidents and athletic detectors through statistics and data have come to the conclusion that we need a championship game in ‘17,” Gundy said. “I’m behind them 100 percent.

“I have seen a few different layouts for ways to decide who those teams would be.

My only suggestion would be to make sure that the two teams that play in a championship game are the teams that have earned a right to get there and have the best records in our league.”

Oklahoma State University’s award-winning student newspaper has served Stillwater and the campus community since 1895. The O’Colly is a real newsroom that prepares students for a professional career in journalism.

We publish newspapers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Friday, during the school year.

The O’Colly is independent from the university and entirely student run, with more than 100 students on payroll. A staff of three professionals advise, guide, educate and provide support.
