“The miracle that he was”

Adeline Hanneman stood in front of a wall of pastel balloons and grinned as she held up a poster-sized photograph of a boy sitting on a blue throne.

“This one’s my favorite,” Adeline said proudly.

The picture showed Bennett, the pint-sized prince perched on the throne, wearing no crown or cape. Instead, layers of white bandages surrounded his left foot, nearly extending to his knee. A gauze patch on his chest, his armor in the battle for his life, covered an access point for intravenous medications.

But as he gripped the arms of his chair in The Children’s Hospital in Oklahoma City, he smiled, just like his older sister as she showed off his photograph.

Adeline and her parents, Aimee and Ben, attended CowboyThon’s dance marathon Feb. 24 at Oklahoma State University. The annual 12-hour event keeps Aimee, who graduated from OSU in 1993 with a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, connected to her alma mater.

CowboyThon, OSU’s largest philanthropy, is a student-run organization that raises funds for the Oklahoma’s Children’s Hospital Foundation.

After involvement in the dance marathons, Aimee and Ben will soon participate in another effort to raise money for children who are battling disease. This time, they organized the event.

Aimee said her 9-year-old daughter was one of the first people to register as a volunteer for the run.

Adeline, who wears black plastic-framed eyeglasses and a cheerful grin, walks with a skip in her step. She might seem like any other child, but she endured a loss that has given her wisdom and maturity beyond that of a typical girl her age.

Warning signs Bennett, Adeline’s younger brother, died June 17, 2015, when he was nearly 3 and a half years old. The Hannemans created the Love Like Crazy Foundation, named for their determination to surround Bennett with love every day of his life, in his memory.

Bennett had Pearson syndrome, a rare mitochondrial disease that affects the blood.

A normal level of hemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen through blood, is about 10 to 14 grams per deciliter for a baby or a toddler.

Bennett had a level of 1.7.

His body contained almost no white blood cells, which fight infection, or platelets, which help with blood clotting.

Aimee gave birth to Bennett on Feb. 28, 2012, after no complications with her pregnancy. She and Ben had no idea about Bennett’s lifethreatening condition until he was 5 months old.

One night in August, as Aimee tried to sleep, she noticed her infant restlessly shoving himself against her, fighting an invisible struggle.

The next morning, Bennett refused to eat, so Aimee called his pediatrician and headed to the doctor’s office.

Bennett’s doctor needed only a small amount of blood, but Bennett’s body had reached a dangerously low blood level. Nurses squeezed, fighting to extract every drop they could, as their small, helpless patient didn’t scream or cry.

“He’s severely anemic,” Bennett’s pediatrician told Aimee and Ben. “You need to get to Children’s Hospital as quickly as you can.”

After the Hannemans checked Bennett into The Children’s Hospital’s emergency room only 15 minutes from home, hospital staff bore a hole into Bennett’s bone to give him the blood transfusion he desperately needed.

Aimee realized her baby hadn’t slept well because he heaved and gasped for a breath. At any minute, Bennett could’ve suffered a stroke or a heart attack. But he didn’t.

Aimee referred to that time as the Hannemans’ first miracle.

Bennett underwent a bone marrow biopsy, meaning doctors removed part of the spongy tissue in his bone and examined it. They tried to identify the reason for his extreme anemia, or inadequate number of red blood cells moving oxygen through his body.

cancer, but uncertainty arrived with the good news. No one could diagnose Bennett yet.

He received medicine to strengthen his germ-fighting factor. Soon, he and his family could leave the hospital, returning every two weeks for Bennett’s regular blood transfusions.

Then in December, the mystery unraveled. The Hannemans learned Bennett had Pearson syndrome.

Kids with Pearson syndrome usually don’t make it through early childhood, they learned from research.

But what is “early childhood”? The Hannemans didn’t know, Aimee said.

“Our focus was always on the quality of his life, not the quantity,” Aimee said. “We had really hoped he was gonna defy all kinds of odds.”

A sister’s love Adeline scampered through her daycare building, gleefully squealing to her grandmother and dad.

“My baby brother’s here!”

Adeline shrieked.

Her dad and grandmother took a 3-and-a-half-year-old Adeline to the hospital to see her newborn sibling. Ben and Aimee called him Bennett, derived from the Latin name Benedictus, meaning “blessed” or “God is gracious.”

Because Bennett’s body couldn’t fight infections, his family often kept him safe in their home, but he relished the time he spent outside.

Adeline and Bennett adventured outdoors as a team. He loved when she pushed him in a tree swing in their yard, and they created sidewalk chalk masterpieces.

“Because he was so young, that wonderment that you just see on their face is amazing,” Ben said.

Bennett exuded the kind of sheer joy that illuminates children’s faces when they first step into Disney World or open a highly-anticipated gift on Christmas.

He needed only a simple

red wagon and his sister.

Chilly weather and biting wind didn’t stop him.

Wrapped tightly in a coat, a hat and a blanket, Bennett’s eyes gleamed as Adeline towed him around the yard in his precious wagon.

In October 2014, Adeline couldn’t take her brother on those exhilarating wagon journeys anymore. Brisk outdoor air turned to confinement in The Children’s Hospital for 121 days.

An infection developed in Bennett’s left foot, which doctors amputated Nov. 11.

He also received a secondary diagnosis of a disease the Hannemans had once been grateful he didn’t have: acute myeloid leukemia. Bennett underwent a bone marrow transplant Dec. 11, eradicating the cancer before it became too severe.

The transplant caused problems when combined with Pearson syndrome. Bennett battled graft-vs-host disease, meaning the immune cells STORY CONTINUES ON PAGE 3

from his donor’s bone marrow attacked his original cells, and acidosis, meaning he had too much acid in his body. The Hannemans constantly made the trip from home to The Children’s Hospital even after his hospital release in January 2015.

Adeline was about 6 years old, an age when children might learn how to tie shoes or ride a bicycle, when Bennett had his transplant.

“She’s wise beyond her years,” Ben said. “She has a huge, compassionate and generous heart.”

Adeline learned how to work a g-tube, which allowed Bennett to receive nutrients in the hospital. She knew about medicine, Aimee said. And she could use a stethoscope to hear the beating lub-dub-lub-dub, a reassuring sign her brother was still alive.

His zeal for life Bennett excitedly clambered up on the windowsill in his hospital room and watched the scene below him, enthralled.

“diggers,” as he called them, Aimee said.

Bennett’s strength faded, yet his zeal for life persisted. When he heard music, he shimmied to the beat, patenting his dance as the “booty scoot.” He didn’t mind constant trips to The Children’s Hospital because he loved its Kamp’s Café that served biscuits and gravy.

In June 2015, pneumonia filled his lungs, and he required a respirator and intubation to breathe. He aspirated, or breathed in fluid, and almost died on a Saturday, but the Hannemans’ miracle child defied the odds once again.

Yet for Bennett, “early childhood” meant he didn’t make it to 4 years old. He continued to suffer, so Aimee and Ben consulted with a medical team at The Children’s Hospital, agonizing over a decision parents hope they never have to face.

Aimee and Ben took Bennett off life support on a Wednesday. Although it’s been nearly three years since Bennett’s last breath, his story lives each year at CowboyThon.

“We continue to attend in his memory and in his honor sharing his story, trying to help people understand just the amazing kid that he was and the miracle that he was,” Aimee

said.

And soon, an outdoor event will honor the memory of the toddler who savored every moment he could spend in the sunshine, riding in his favorite red wagon.

Run Like Crazy will feature a 1-mile run at 7:30 a.m. and a 5-kilometer run at 8 a.m.

“Our mission is three-fold,” Aimee said. “First is that it provides what we call tangible love to families whose kids are fighting complex medical conditions. Second is to educate about mitochondrial disease, specifically Pearson syndrome, which was his diagnosis.

“And then last is to make contributions toward research for better treatment and a cure for Pearson syndrome.”

Although the Hannemans openly acknowledge Bennett’s journey, Adeline keeps her emotions to herself. She doesn’t cry much. She and her friends painted rocks for Bennett’s graveside once, but she doesn’t need to visit the cemetery.

Instead, every year on Feb. 28, Adeline and her father meet in the kitchen. They spend the early morning preparing warm, soft biscuits, which he’s bought in bulk, and concoct a steaming crockpot of gravy. Then Adeline takes the heaps of food to school and shares them with friends and teachers.

It’s her way of always saying “Happy Birthday” to her little brother.

“Upgrade,” which Leigh Whannell directed, is an extended episode of “Black Mirror.”

“Black Mirror” is known for its variation of disturbing yet thoughtprovoking plots, dystopian in nature.

Exploration of the ways technology can go wrong in “Upgrade” leaves the audience uneasy. The movie is set in the future when nothing manual is an option and society is dependent on technology.

When Grey Trace (Logan Marshall-Green) is left paralyzed after a shooting that masked men cause, his life seems over until he finds a solution that lets him walk again. A tech mogul approaches Trace after his accident and offers to let him test one of his new products.

Trace undergoes surgery to implant a system called “STEM.” It is essentially a chip that creates a bridge from his mind to his limbs to allow him to control them again. Trace uses this program to investigate the attack that left him paralyzed and killed his wife.

His investigation takes a dark turn, and his research quickly becomes WEDNESDAY, JUNE 6, 2018

physical. He begins to hunt the men who disrupted his life.

During his time tracking down his attackers, he discovers STEM has a mind of its own. It starts as a helpful tool but rapidly traps Trace in his own mind.

His investigation leads him to a man named Fisk (Benedict Hardie), a dangerous human-robot hybrid. His technological improvements make Fisk a worthy adversary.

Fisk’s non-human elements make him incredibly creepy.

The film is filled with action but leaves the audience feeling creeped out. Its negative prediction of the future fills viewers with hopelessness. Although it is thought-provoking, it makes the audience thankful for current technological advances in society.

The idea of a society filled with technology taking over earns the movie a spot in the horror genre. Along with the psychological component, the movie includes multiple action scenes.

STEM not only gives Trace his physical abilities back but also gives him new skills.

He gains nearly unlimited knowledge in combat and other topics. This allows him to successfully

fight men he previously could not defend himself against.

It also examines his role with inner conflict.

Trace was previously against the advancement of technology and fought back on a small scale. He refused to get an automated car and worked on old, classic cars. His choice to implant STEM went against his nature, beginning his downfall.

The movie is intriguing but worth seeing only once. Viewers will probably not want to watch it twice because of the sordid feeling that lingers.
