Stillwater Medical Center reaches ICU capacity in normal ICU, COVID unit
Ryan Novozinsky Stillwater Medical Center’s intensive care unit is at capacity, according to data from its official website. The hospital is using all seven of its ICU beds, 15 of 16 COVID unit beds and 38 of 55 medical beds. In the COVID unit, all three three ICU beds and 12 of 13 non-ICU are currently being used. The data graphic also announced that surge capacity expansion has been implemented. “It’s not very often that we’re at capacity at all,” said Stillwater Medical’s public relations director Shyla Eggers. “For some reason during this crazy pandemic, we’re seeing a lot of other patients that are extremely ill. We do think there are people that have neglected their own healthcare in fear of COVID. They don’t want to go to a provider, they don’t want to go to a hospital so when they do finally get here, some of them are extremely ill because they’ve neglected other symptoms.” These new numbers showed a significant increase in both units since last Thursday’s report. In that report, the hospital reported three of seven ICU beds in use, six of eight COVID unit beds in use and 49 of 55 medical beds in use. Eggers said that because of the surge in ICU and COVID unit bed capacity, the hospital is focused on planning for future improvements. “We spent most of the weekend and almost all day today, we have further plans in place,” Eggers said. “I will tell you that it’s not about physical bed space, it’s about staff to take care of them. So we have implemented what we call our ‘code green’ staffing plan, which is what I would say is like an all call to all of our employees. We have three hospitals, Stillwater Medical, Blackwell, Perry, we also have about 40 other locations. And in those locations we have

CNA’s and RN’s and LPN’s working in those locations that may not be working at the bedside right now, but are trained to do so.” Stillwater Medical, which is adjacent to Oklahoma State University, also plays a role in the university’s future. According to a university document obtained by The O’Colly in August, a potential switch to online classes “will be determined by the rate of increase of number of infections per day, number of hospitalizations per day, rate of decrease in availability of hospital beds, ICU beds.” Despite the recent hospitalizations, the university remains committed to its original plans. “We continue to monitor the rate of increase in infections and hospitalizations in the Stillwater community,” said OSU director of
media relations Monica Roberts. “While hospitalizations have increased, the overall substantial decrease in new and active cases along with the reduced need for our quarantine spaces are indications the local situation may be improving. OSU continues to consult with local and state health officials in all of our decisions related to the ongoing pandemic.” Both OSU and Stillwater Medical confirmed that the two are in constant communication about the current pandemic situation. Eggers added that despite active cases slightly improving, Stillwater residents need to remain vigilant in keeping others safe. “We need people to take it seriously,” Eggers said. “We need people of all ages to take it

Stillwater COVID-19 update By Ryan Boyce On Monday, the Oklahoma State Department of Health’s COVID-19 dashboard reported 347 active cases in Payne County with 296 coming from Stillwater. No additional deaths were reported. At the state level, the Health Department reported an increase in active cases to 85,192 yesterday, with only one additional death. As of yesterday, Canada County passed Payne County for the highest total number of cases over the course of the pandemic, according to the dashboard. For the last few days, the number of active cases in Payne County has remained stagnant after the decreases from last week. To prevent the spread of COVID-19 and promote public health, the CDC website recommends frequent handwashing, social distancing of at least six feet, and the use of masks. According to the CDC website, COVID-19 can spread even before symptoms show up, so caution is always advised. Unsplash

(Ps.16:11) There is nothing in this life that can be compared to the wonders God has in store for us. (Ro.8:18) What an opportunity! God’s message to us is good news and we are to respond and embrace it. Don’t miss it. Now is the accepted time. This opportunity is presented to us through Jesus Christ. What your autumn shoe says about you By Chase Congleton With autumn finally showing its colors, it is safe to say people are adjusting their fashion choices to the weather. Shoes are the staple to each person’s outfit; to get to know someone else in a better light, you need to step in his or her shoes. Therefore, a lot can be said about a person based on what shoe he or she wears this coming season. Doc Martens Let’s be honest with ourselves, this was the first shoe that came to your mind when you thought of autumn. If you wear Doc Martens, you either have a Tumblr account or transferred to Twitter directly from Tumblr. This is your favorite season and you probably think you have the best taste in music. You watch A24 films and go thrift shopping as often as you can to fight against fast fashion. Converse You prefer a classic, conventional style for your streetwear. Although you play it safe and try to conform, you still have a few of your own quirks shine through. You possibly are also obsessed with all things Disney-related. You have an artistic side that you show through your hobbies and your fashion. Filas If you’re wearing those white Filas this year in fall, please expand your shoe game to something else. Those white Filas were cute in 2018 and 2019, but in 2020, they’ve become a tired trend. However, if you’re wearing a different type of Filas, you’re probably into streetwear and like to stay ahead of the trend. You enjoy obscure anime and think “Blade Runner” is the best sci-fi film of all-time. Vans If you have Vans in your fall fashion for this year, you either went to Warped Tour or you wished you went to Warped Tour. You also enjoy Billie Eilish, Tyler the Creator and Rex Orange County. You are also on “alt-Tik Tok” and had a major Hot Topic phase at one point. Bonus points if you wear the checkered Vans. Sneaker Sneakers involve a bit of freestyle in this list. There is no definite answer, for each shoe brand can be a different person. However, without a doubt if you’re wearing sneakers with your outfit in the fall, you’re influenced by Black culture. Regardless if the influence is rooted in consuming art found in hip-hop or following NBA athletes such as Russell Westbrook, you care a great deal about your sneakers. Your streetwear is mostly athleisure, but you have a calm, collected demeanor that people are attracted to. Sandals If you’re wearing sandals in autumn, you’re chaotic. Do you not feel the cold breeze? Fall fashion comes with many different choices. What shoes you wear on your feet, however, can tell it all.

Shane Illingworth got his first career start against West Virginia and impressed coach Mike Gundy, despite not having his best performance. Illingworth replaced Ethan Bullock in the Cowboys’ first game against Tulsa, then got the starting nod after Spencer Sanders was not cleared to play with a right ankle injury. Against the Mountaineers the Cowboys went with a more run-focused, ball-control game plan to ease Illingworth into the college pace. The game ended with the Cowboys running the ball 41 times and passing only 22 times. Illingworth completed 15-of-22 attempts for 139 yards and an interception. Through two games, the Cowboys have not had a passing touchdown. This is the first time the Cowboys have gone consecutive games without a passing touchdown in Gundy’s career. “If you’re grading him out as a college quarterback, he was below average, but if you’re grading him out as a second game of your career, he was average,” Gundy told reporters on a zoom call Monday. “I expected that just based on last week when he came in there wasn’t any pressure, he wasn’t expecting to play. “Now he had to get prepared to play, and toward the end of the wee,k Spencer didn’t look like he was going to be 100%, so he plays and he probably had some nerves and other things that affect your play as a young quarterback.” When it comes to the Cowboys next game in Lawrence, Kansas, to face the Kansas Jayhawks Gundy has not made a determination as to which quarterback will start the game for OSU. sports.ed@ocolly.com Quarterback Shane Illingworth of Oklahoma State had an impressive first start.

$40 million man: Teven Jenkins’ bright future Sudeep Tumma OSU coach Mike Gundy was having a conversation with tackle Teven Jenkins. “I was serious but somewhat joking with him in the weight room when there was a bunch of guys working out, and I said, ‘You know Tevin, can you name the one person in this weight room that’s worth $40 million,’” Gundy, the OSU coach, told reporters on Monday. “He looks at me like I’m trying to give him a haircut or something. And he says, ‘No.’ And I say, ‘You, if you decide to work really hard.’” “He decided to say, ‘You know what, I’m just going to do it.’ That’s the kind of talent he has. If he just gets his mind focused on, ‘That’s what I want to do,’ that’s the level that he can get to.” That talent has transformed himself into the anchor of this OSU O-line and a stud up front. Jenkins, who’s played at both tackle spots and even guard during his career, came into the season as OSU’s only returning full-time starter. They weren’t even counting, he was just doing it. He has tremendous feet, he’s got good leverage, he’s highly intelligent. His work ethic is getting better this year.” With Dylan Galloway’s retirement this offseason, Jenkins opened up the season at left tackle. But with the injuries the Cowboys have sustained on the right side to Cole Birmigham and Hunter Anthony, Jenkins has been forced to shift back to right tackle. Still, Jenkins, who Todd McShay named a top-3 tackle prospect in the 2021 NFL draft, looks to be in for a tremendous season. “I don’t want to look in the bag and count my eggs yet, but in this last game, he actually played a little bit nasty, like what you have to do to be a really good player, to play in the NFL,” Gundy said. “We were happy with what he did, he was our offensive player of the game.
