Blueprint for Success Bryce Carter, a graduate transfer catcher from stanford on the oklahoma state baseball team, is fusing his passions for baseball and architecture toghether during his final season of collegiate baseball.

Reading architecture blueprints and playing catcher don’t usually go in the same sentence.

Unless you’re Bryce Carter.

As Oklahoma State’s new baseball stadium, O’Brate Stadium, comes to fruition, Carter has been coach Josh Holliday’s go-to guy anytime he has had questions about the blueprints.

Carter is in his first, and last, season at OSU. He transferred to play for the Cowboys after graduating from Stanford with a degree in architectural design engineering. Carter grew up in Tulsa and went to high school at Cascia Hall. He had a lot of interest in OSU, and the Cowboys recruited him hard, but the opportunity to get a degree from Stanford was too good to turn down.

David Carter, Bryce’s dad, said the family loved OSU and the coaches during the recruiting process.

However, Stanford was the only school that told him he could study architecture and play baseball. The other schools he was interested in, OSU and Notre MONDAY, MARCH 25, 2019

“We’re unbelievably proud that he made it through,” David Carter said. “It’s incredible really that he made it through, especially with the architecture and the time involved with that... It’s a really good insurance policy he’s got in his back pocket for whatever he does in the future.”

Carter began his Stanford career majoring in engineering until a teammate of his invited him to an Architecture 1 class. Carter said he was hooked immediately.

“I went and I just loved it,” Carter said.

“I loved every minute of it. The drawings, the design, the setting of the building, stuff like that.”

Carter switched his major to architecture design engineering, at which point his academic adviser got him in contact with Andrew Luck, the quarterback of the Indianapolis Colts. Luck studied the same thing at Stanford.

Carter said he and Luck had a conversation about architecture, specifically focusing on player amenities, which is something Carter takes an interest in.

“I think they get lost sometimes in the design and it gets so focused on the fan experience, which is very important obviously. I think it would be really cool to use my background, what I’ve seen in college locker rooms and being in high school and everything to actually implement that into a college locker room from my perspective.”

Carter said going

to Stanford was a big learning experience and forced him to grow up quickly, partly because of the workload.

“To me it seems normal because it’s just what I know,” Carter said. “Doing architecture while also playing baseball is basically like working two jobs.

When you first get there, it’s overwhelming and then you learn how to manage it and deal with it and in the end it makes you a better person because your

time management skills and everything.”

David Carter said it helped Carter’s teammates were going through the same rigorous schedule.

“It’s a different deal out there,” David Carter said. “There’s a lot of very, very, very smart people... Again he’s a smart kid and he works hard, but when he went out there it was difficult for him. “…They don’t pull any punches with their athletes. There’s no

special classes. It’s difficult and very demanding.”

David Carter said his son played sparingly his senior year at Stanford after getting hurt his junior year. Carter had surgery on his throwing arm because of an ulnar nerve issue. With a Stanford degree in hand and a chance to come back closer to home, Carter said it was an easy transition.

c over s to ry he was at Vanderbilt,” Carter said. “He recruited me at Vanderbilt, he recruited me when he got here. It never really lined up to come here for undergrad, but I had another year and I knew I wanted to come here and play. They had a spot open and it worked out.”

Stacey Reynolds Peterson didn’t realize her grandfather was famous.

Then she and her family traveled to New York City.

Her grandfather couldn’t step out in public without fans swarming him, Peterson recalled. People relentlessly tugged at his shirt, reached for his hat and begged for his autograph. They were celebrating Allie Reynolds Day in his honor, and Peterson, then a teenager, was surprised.

“We were like, ‘What in the world is going on?’”

Peterson said. “And that’s when we learned really all about it, about all that he had accomplished and how hard he had worked.”

Allie P. Reynolds was a six-time World Series champion with the New York Yankees after he played for the Oklahoma State baseball team and the Cleveland Indians.

To Peterson and her sister, Lyndy Sullivan, he was Papaw.

Peterson, Sullivan and other members of Reynolds’ family sat behind home plate in the stadium named for him and watched the Cowboy baseball team face Kansas State on Saturday afternoon. After this season, they won’t have a chance to see OSU play in Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

O’Brate Stadium, the new home of Cowboy baseball, is set to open in 2020.

“I think they deserve to have a new stadium,” Sullivan said. “Everybody has a time to shine.”

The Cowboys edged the Wildcats 5-4 to win the series, and Reynolds’ legacy gave the crowd another reason to celebrate. Brady Sullivan, Reynolds’ greatgreat grandson, threw out the first pitch, and the first 500 fans in the stadium received T-shirts displaying the logo that commemorates the last season at Allie P. The celebration continued from OSU’s victory against K-State on Friday, when the first 1,000 fans received bobbleheads of Reynolds in his classic Aggies uniform and members of the Reynolds family were honored.

Although Peterson, who graduated from Edmond Memorial High School, lives in San Francisco and doesn’t often attend OSU games, she always carries the memory of the day when the Cowboys’ venue was dedicated to Reynolds. Allie P. Reynolds Stadium opened in time for the 1981 season.

Peterson said she remembered the pride that filled her grandfather.

“I’ve seen the whole revolution of it becoming his stadium, and now, this is the last season that the Cowboys are gonna play here,” Peterson said.

“Well, I’m thrilled that they’re getting a new stadium. It’s kind of sad. It’s kind of sad, but it’s also overdue for the Cowboys to get a new stadium.”

The Oklahoma State baseball team is playing its last season in Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. Reynolds’ granddaughters, Stacey Reynolds Peterson and Lyndy Sullivan, attended Saturday’s game.

Although Peterson couldn’t fathom the magnitude of Reynolds’ legacy when she was a child, she was familiar with his love for sports. She said he taught her and his other grandchildren how to pitch, throw and catch, and he consistently attended their softball games.

Sullivan reflected on Reynolds’ traits that he showed beyond the baseball diamond.

“He loved baseball, but he also loved Oklahoma,” Sullivan said. “He very much loved his Native

American heritage. He invested a lot in that in Oklahoma, and just he was a very generous, giving man.”

Reynolds often had stacks of about 30 baseballs in his house, Peterson said. As a kid, she didn’t know anything different, but she later understood that children mailed baseballs to him in hopes of getting his signature.

Peterson said Reynolds autographed each one and sent it back for free.

Reynolds died in December 1994 in Oklahoma City, but his influence permeates the Cowboy program.

Josh Holliday, OSU’s coach, said Reynolds was a figure who symbolized OSU baseball.

“Without Allie P. Reynolds Stadium, there is no O’Brate Stadium,” Holliday said. “Without Allie P. Reynolds Stadium, there is no decade of dominance. Without Allie P. Reynolds Stadium, I don’t get to stand here and

do what I love to do today, so all of us here are direct beneficiaries of the investment in this program and the things that he and his family helped make OSU baseball really get off the ground and get going in the early ‘80s.

“I think it’s just part of our history. It’s part of our future, too.”

“Five Feet Apart”​made its debut as a major motion picture on March 15.

With characters you will fall in love with and a storyline that tugs on your heartstrings, “Five Feet Apart”​is a must-see.

This romantic drama follows the lives of three patients suffering from cystic fibrosis: Stella (Haley Lu Richardson ), Will (Cole Sprouse ) and Poe (Moisés Arias ).

Similar in genre to “​The Fault in Our Stars,” which was released more than five years ago, “Five Feet

Apart” ​is another educational and emotional look into the lives of those with chronic illnesses.

CF patients are more susceptible to diseases than others. Germs travel in droplets up to 6 feet in any direction, which is why CF patients cannot be closer than 6 feet apart.

Because of the higher risk of catching diseases that their bodies cannot fight, the decision for two CF patients to be 5 feet apart is only the beginning of Stella and Will’s dangerous relationship.

Stella and Poe, who met when they were young during CF treatments,

provide the movie with plenty of comic relief. It comes as no surprise that “​Hannah Montana” ​star, Rico, is the one creating comedy in such an intense and heartbreaking movie.

It is evident from the beginning that Stella has a strong support system: plenty of friends, mom and dad, and Poe. Poe, on the other hand, struggles with support and love. Whether it’s his family or his boyfriend, he feels like letting people support him and letting love in means he is placing the financial and emotional costs on others.

Will, though, is polar opposite from Stella.

Where she is controlling, he is carefree; where she is organized, he is laidback.

Will and Stella balance each another out, which makes their roles in this movie that much more appealing.

Although this is just a movie, the writers and producers did an excellent job identifying the real problems that CF patients face.

The families of CF patients go through a lot more than most families.

Watching a loved one go through years of treatment is hard. Medicine may temporarily make them feel better, but, ul-

timately, there is no cure.

This movie will make you feel what the families feel as they watch their loved ones suffer.

Touch is a sense that is often taken for granted.

CF patients, as Stella mentions in the opening scene of the movie, do not get the satisfaction of touch. Since the disease is genetic, and not contagious, touch is allowed with anyone not suffering from CF. Between Stella, Will and Poe, touch is absolutely restricted.

Survivor’s guilt is a real thing.

Seeing someone feel guilty for suffering through such an intense

illness is potentially the hardest part of the movie to watch. Stella shares her story with Will; her sister died in an accident and her parents marriage died, but Stella? Still hanging in there. And how does she feel? Guilty.

To see Stella, Will and Poe fight through their treatments and fight for one another, make your way to a theater near you, and bring a box of tissues.
