Every year, the weeklong celebration of homecoming kicks off with dyeing the fountain orange in front of Edmon Low Library.

The finals of Basketball Bonanza had Gallagher-Iba Arena rocking early Sunday morning.

This year, because of inclement weather, Basketball Bonanza replaced the usual Football Frenzy so the homecoming competition could take place indoors.

Students played in championship games for the Greek and open brackets on Sunday in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Although Sigma Phi Lambda/Phi Kappa Tau fell behind early, it made a comeback in a resounding victory.

Sam Bush, a player for Sigma Phi Lambda/Phi Tau, said he thought his team could have played better, but he was satisfied with the final outcome.

“We needed to make layups,” Bush said. “We missed a lot. We should’ve blown them out, but overall, I think we did well. We got the dub, so I can’t complain.”

Bush said waking up early in the morning was worth it to snag a championship title.

“I’m tired,” Bush said. “I woke up very early for this, but it’s pretty cool to win something.”

Homecoming celebration begins with Cowboy Stampede Dy l an Pr os k a S taf f R epo rt er @ o c olly

Students from across Kansas and Oklahoma kicked off Oklahoma State’s homecoming festivities with a rodeo.

These students competed in Cowboy Stampede from Thursday through Saturday at Payne County Expo Center. Attendance peaked on Saturday, the last day of the competition, with more than 1,000 guests.

Collegiate competitors participated in events such as roping, racing and bull riding.

“The OSU rodeo team and rodeo club sponsor collegiate rodeo, which we refer to as the Cowboy Stampede,” said Karen Hickman, Assistant Dean of OSU’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources. “It’s the kickoff to the greatest homecoming.”

Friday night, President Burns Hargis and First Cowgirl Ann Hargis rode on horseback at the

rodeo. Thomas Coon, vice president of Division of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, and his wife, Rhonda, did the same on Saturday.

“Rodeo is very familyoriented,” Hickman said.

“Most of these students have been rodeoing since they were in middle school. It’s a very unique sport because of the tradition associated with it, and we’re lucky to have such hardworking individuals.”

OSU is just one of many schools that host rodeos in the central plains region.

Cowboy and Cowgirl students compete against other schools in Oklahoma and Kansas. OSU’s team has 47 students, the most it has ever had.

“We want this to be just as educational as it is for entertainment,” said Melissa Mourer, communications coordinator for CASNR. “We have people here that have never been to a rodeo before, so it is important to us that we create an environment where people can learn

what they’re seeing and understand the rich heritage that rodeo has.”

The OSU Rodeo Team has been a member of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association since 1948. Cowboy Stampede was only recently delegated to kick off homecoming.

“It’s not just a college rodeo,” Mourer said.

“It’s about celebrating the university. It’s about celebrating the community.

It’s a mesh of everything that’s great about OSU in a three-day time span.”

Many members of the rodeo team, including Sam Stamper, grew up on farms.

Olson’s goal seals Cowgirls’ victory against Iowa State Taylor Olson blasted a header into the net to end overtime in the Oklahoma State soccer team’s match against Iowa State.

Olson’s goal gave the Cowgirls a 2-1 victory against the Cyclones on Sunday afternoon in Ames.

After No. 8 West Virginia shut out OSU on Friday, the Cowgirls (11-2-2) redeemed themselves when they edged past ISU. Olson, a freshman forward, scored in the 96th minute. Olson’s goal was the sixth of the season, and she is tied with Haley Woodard as OSU’s leading scorer this season.

The Cyclones answered in the 28th minute when Stella Strohman scored off an assist from Courtney Powell.

OSU outshot ISU 29-11.

Although eleven of the Cowgirls’ shots were on goal, Antonia Reyes had nine saves for the Cyclones.

Michela Ongaro notched five saves for OSU, but they weren’t enough to keep the Cowgirls out of overtime.

In overtime, the Cyclones fought to suppress OSU. Olson took a shot in the 91st minute, but it was Abby Ingram/O’COLLY blocked.
