Whether Isaac Likekele plunges into an ice bath or gulps down tart cherry juice after basketball practice, he is dedicated to his routine.

Likekele, a freshman starting point guard, is one of seven available scholarship players on the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team.

With a reduced roster, the Cowboys, including Likekele, are forced to play more minutes, which has altered their regimens outside games. They have adjusted their workouts to prevent excessive fatigue. Their nutrition plans involve supplements to help them recuperate after strenuous workouts, practices and games.

Likekele said he takes ice baths three to four times a week. OSU canceled school Feb. 19 because of winter weather, but Likekele visited Gallagher-Iba Arena for an ice bath before he shot free throws and layups.

“After a while, you get used to it,” Likekele said.

Similarly, he had to acclimate to the cherry juice. He said he doesn’t like the taste but gladly drinks it if it helps him.

It takes me a while to drink it, but it is what it is.”

Jenny Boynton, the dietitian who works with the Cowboys, introduced the juice to the team to facilitate recovery. She said it counters oxidative stress, an imbalance in the body that can lead to inflammation and other physiological conditions.

“Theoretically, you’ll be less sore, quicker to recover, (have) less inflammation, able to hopefully perform better the next day than what you would have without (the juice),” Boynton said. “And so they’re drinking that after practice to kind of help their bodies just bounce back a little quicker.”

The Cowboys freely ask Boynton about their diets, but at first, they were slightly hesitant, she said.

If a student-athlete scarfed down too many greasy hamburgers or french fries, the coach could quickly find out from her.

She is married to Mike Boynton, OSU’s men’s basketball coach.

“I think they were kind of unsure to ask a question that might get back to him in a negative light, but we’ve gotten over that,” Jenny Boynton said.

fostered a cordial, familylike relationship between her and the players. Instead of attending frequent formal meetings in an office, the Cowboys often ask nutrition-related questions when they see her in Gallagher-Iba Arena, and she casually asks what they ate for lunch or makes sure they had their required breakfast.

Sometimes, players go to the Boyntons’ house for meals.

“It’s an area that’s really, really impor-

tant,” Mike Boynton said. “Especially when you’re trying to figure out how to maintain and take care of your body as well as you can under some different circumstances, she provides a resource that they’re comfortable with.”

Each Cowboy has different goals. Curtis Jones, a 185-pound junior guard, has focused on gaining weight.

Likekele is adapting to playing long stretches with few opportunities to rest.

He has started every game during the 2019 season, but he didn’t always play as much as he has recently.

The roster attrition changed his situation.

Before the Cowboys defeated Texas on Jan 8., graduate transfer guard Mike Cunningham and Mike Boynton decided it was best for Cunningham to leave the team,

Boynton said.

Eight days later, Boynton dismissed three freshmen for violating rules.

Without point guard Michael Weathers, forward Maurice Calloo and forward/center Kentrevious Jones, OSU had eight scholarship players. Then Trey Reeves, a former walkon, broke his right foot.

Although Reeves rarely plays, his injury left the Cowboys with seven available scholarship players.

Similarly, freshman forward Yor Anei’s average playing time increased 10.4 minutes after the dismissals.

Because of the diminished roster, the Cowboys have to carefully strike a balance in workouts. They need

the strength to play more, but they can’t push themselves to exhaustion.

Jake Manzelmann, OSU’s strength and conditioning coach, said players typically lift weights three to four days a week during nonconference play.

When Big 12 games start and the Cowboys often play two games a week, they reduce lifting to two to three days weekly. They usually

partake in a daily fullbody workout, he said.

Manzelmann said the Cowboys are focused on core and upperbody exercises but have scaled back on lifting and leg work.

“I think that’s important in season to stay strong, but with the amount of minutes … some of these younger guys are playing, not used to the whole grind of the college or Big 12 season, we had to

cut back a little bit in that area,” Manzelmann said.

Returning players such as Lindy Waters III are accustomed to the grueling lifestyle, but it takes a toll on them. Waters, a junior guard, has dealt with tendinitis, inflammation of the tissue that attaches muscle to bone, in his left knee.

next thing you know, it’s killing me,” Waters said.

He undergoes treatment and endures the aches. Waters has started every game and played at least 30 minutes in each game but one since the Jan. 16 dismissals.

“We get hurt all the time and just gotta deal with it,” Waters said.

To ease issues like tendinitis, the Cowboys are taking a collagen supplement before workouts and lifting sessions, Jenny Boynton said. It’s a berryflavored powder they pour in water and energy drinks, and it boosts soft tissue healing in tendons and ligaments.

Although injuries are sometimes unavoidable, Boynton said the supplement is intended to decrease inflammation after practice and avert severe issues.

“The recovery and trying to keep their bodies in tip-top shape is going beyond just what they’re eating now,” Boynton said.

As the Cowboys adjust their nutrition and conditioning habits, new players are familiarizing themselves with the daily grind of college basketball.

With eight scholarship players and walkon Luke Major, OSU didn’t have enough players for a five-onfive scrimmage. Mike Boynton added former manager Tanner Taylor and selected a practice squad after holding

walk-on tryouts Jan. 17.

Four of those practice squad members have joined the roster: Gabe Simpson, Dee Mitchell, Cade Wagner and J.K. Hadlock.

Not all of the new walk-ons partake in Manzelmann’s workouts. Because Simpson is a football walk-on, he is training with Rob Glass, the football strength and conditioning coach Others, including Taylor, have experienced Manzelmann’s workouts.

“It was a little different going from manager to that, but he’s done a good job,” Manzelmann said.

Although Manzelmann has made leg workouts lighter, Likekele said Manzelmann urges the Cowboys to independently visit the training room, something Likekele has done.

“At this point in the season, you really just want to just make sure that you’re in the best shape that you can be in because everybody you know is gonna be beat up or worn down,” Likekele said. “It’s a matter of who actually cares enough to take care of their bodies and really just focus on the court, school and taking care of their bodies, just those three things.”

Stillwater Police Department Capt. Kyle Gibbs said the permitless carry bill Gov. Kevin Stitt signed into law Wednesday is a step backward, but it won’t affect the way the police do their job.

The bill that Stitt signed Wednesday afternoon allows anyone over the age of 21, who does not fall under a list of specific exceptions, to carry a weapon, concealed or unconcealed, without a permit. The list of exceptions includes a felony conviction, or

a domestic violence or stalking conviction.

The law overturns a previous requirement that anyone who wanted to carry a gun had to go through basic firearms training and apply for a license through the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. The application included a $25 fee paid to the sheriff’s office for fingerprinting, and a $100 fee paid to the OSBI for a five-year license.

The law still requires a background check to purchase a gun from a licensed dealer, but it’s not required to receive a gun as a gift or to buy from a

private seller.

Gibbs said while he wouldn’t have chosen the law change, it won’t change the police department’s procedures.

“If the law’s changed, we just accept it and go on,” Gibbs said. “We wouldn’t have advocated for that position, the carry with no background check, but it is what it is, so we will take that in stride and continue doing what we’re doing.”

Police policy when approaching someone who is carrying a gun will not change now that there is no license. Under the previous law, police could only initiate contact with

a person carrying a gun if they had a specific reason to believe that person was breaking the law, such as if the person carrying a gun is a known felon, or if they are in the middle of an illegal act. Gibbs said that doesn’t change.

“Those items remain exactly the same,” Gibbs said. “Now people can legally carry a gun without a permit, but to go and investigate why they’re carrying the gun, we still have to have some other behavior that would necessitate the contact. If I just see ‘em walking down the street, that doesn’t give me the authority to go and

contact them and find out if they’re legally able to carry the gun or not.”

Overall, Gibbs said the law doesn’t really make the public any less safe

because the people who planned to break the law – such as convicted felons – were already carrying guns.

Anita Hill

Celebrating Women’s History Month

Anita F. Hill, a 1977 graduate of OSU, brought the subject of sexual harassment to the forefront of American politics while testifying at the Supreme Court confirmation hearings for then-Judge Clarence Thomas in 1991. Today, she’s a professor of social policy, law and women’s studies at Brandeis University and of counsel with the law firm of Cohen, Milstein, Sellers and Toll. She chairs and advises many different boards, commissions and associations and serves on the board of directors for both the National Women’s Law Center and the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Boston. Hill has also authored multiple papers, articles and books, including Speaking Truth to Power (2011).

Taking a look at Oklahoma State’s influential figures Kayse Shrum March is Women’s History Month.

To commemorate the vital role women have played in the history of Oklahoma State University, here’s a glimpse of a few of our own influential female figures.

Dr. Kayse Shrum became Oklahoma’s youngest and first female president and dean of a medical school when she was promoted to the position at the OSU Center for Health Sciences in Tulsa in 2013.

She guided the strategic efforts leading to the nation’s first tribally affiliated medical school. The OSU College of Osteopathic Medicine at the Cherokee Nation will open next year in Tahlequah, creating a sustainable primary care physician pipeline.

Anne Greenwood Anne Morris Greenwood, along with her husband Michael, has built a legacy of giving at OSU. She was named Philanthropist of the Year for 2018 by the Women of OSU, and it’s no wonder.

The couple have made lead gifts to such projects as the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center, the Anne Morris Greenwood Reading Room in Edmon Low Library, the new Spears School of Business building, the McKnight Center for the Performing Arts at Oklahoma State University and the Michael and Anne Greenwood School of Music. They have also endowed multiple scholarships and support the OSU Marching Band and the Cowboy Strong Student Emergency Fund. In 2009, Anne served as Women for OSU’s first chairwoman.

Ramona Paul Ramona Ware Emmons Paul, a two-time OSU alumna, spent her life in early childhood education. Her work with the Oklahoma State Department of Education led to Oklahoma becoming a national leader in developing age-appropriate curriculum. She was the daughter of two OSU professors, and her husband established an endowed professorship at OSU in her honor after she died in 2013.

“Where we as law enforcement encounter problems with people with guns, it’s not the people who have permits who we have any issue with,” Gibbs said. “The people who are carrying guns illegally and that would do us harm or do someone else harm, they are carrying those guns illegally, or have those guns illegally.

That will always continue to be the case.”

Where Gibbs said he does have a problem with the law is the lack of training required to carry a gun. He recommends that everyone who carries a gun get some kind of training,

even though it is no longer a requirement.

“If you’re going to carry a gun, you need to be confident and comfortable and understand how to use the gun,” Gibbs said. “And they are still responsible, just like the police are. For every shot we fire we are responsible for that bullet.”

Daysha Lewis, an Oklahoma State University freshman, doesn’t know how she feels about the new law, and it’s for the same reason Gibbs is concerned.

“I still think you should have good training because a lot of people don’t know

what they’re doing with them,” Lewis said. “They’re very dangerous.”

Lewis said she is unlikely to get a gun in the future, and she feels like there has to be another way to defend oneself. Still, she said she’s pretty sure people are already carrying guns, and the law may make people feel safer.

“It may be safer, I guess,” Lewis said.

Kaelon Love, a sports management junior who spent some time in the army, dislikes the law.

“I think it could be a little dangerous, a little bit,” Love said. “… I understand why people

want them, but at the same time, I don’t feel like we need them.”

But Love said he’s not entirely against guns.

“I think if you go through training and stuff like that, if you know how to use it and you know when to use it, then it’s okay,” Love said.

The law does not affect the issue of carrying guns on college campuses.

The new law goes into effect Nov. 1.
