The name speaks for itself. In nine quick days, Oklahoma State students had the opportunity to visit eight Italian cities during their spring break.

Mark and Angela Weiser work in the Spears School of Business. Mark Weiser is a professor in management science and information systems, and Angela is an academic adviser. They began the study abroad trip nine years ago and their inspiration came from a trip with their, at the time, 12-year-old daughter.

“I just bought a ticket into Venice and out of Naples and everything else was up to her to plan,” Mark said. “Being 12, she didn’t plan it. We showed up in Venice, and she was tired of Venice; we looked at a map and went on to the next place.”

While on the trip, the idea of going from city to city gave Mark an idea.

“When we got down to Rome, I thought, ‘This would be a great trip for university students,’” Mark said. “While we were on the trip, it got planned.”

The class’s name, Italy Fast and Furious, has stuck with the trip since the beginning. Angela said it could not be more fitting.

ferent cities,” Angela said.

“We are constantly going.

Our thought process behind that was trying to get the biggest bang for your buck.

Everybody has heard of all these amazing things and who wants to miss out on something? You might not get to go back to Italy.”

The trip quickly gained traction among Oklahoma State students. Each year, it filled up more quickly.

Now, it is one of the fastestfilling study abroad trips offered at Oklahoma State.

This year, all 50 spots filled up less than a week after enrollment opened.

The appeal to the trip is simple, Angela Weiser said.

“Who doesn’t want to go to Italy when you are in college?” Angela said. “It seems to be on everybody’s bucket list to see the Leaning Tower and go and see the Colosseum.”

Mary Joy Houghton, an Oklahoma State sophomore, just returned from this year’s trip and said the idea of studying abroad in a short amount of time caught her attention.

“I decided to go on the trip because I have always wanted to go on a study abroad,” Houghton said.

“My schedule hasn’t allowed me to do a whole semester or a summer yet, so I thought this was be the perfect time to see as much as I could in the nine days that we were there.”

The Italy Fast and Furious group toured many local business to observe their business tactics and learn techniques specific to Italian culture. the Weisers decided to use spring break because of affordability. The trip costs $1,799 plus airfare.

The price includes lodging, meals eaten with the group, entry for tours and business visits, and a program shirt.

March is not a busy tourist time in Italy; therefore, prices are lower than normal, so Mark said it was the best fit to give students the opportunity.

“So many students do something on spring break that costs money anyway,” Mark said. “This trip was designed for, at least an out-of-state student, if they were to receive the average scholarships from the university and college it would actually costs less to earn three credits going to Italy

then it could right here in Stillwater, and that includes airfare and out-of-pocket money as well.”

To figure out the best prices, Mark went to Italy in October before the first trip and found all the accommodations to make sure the trip was affordable and ensure it would go smoothly.

The trip gives students three credit hours and fulfills their international requirement. Because this is a business trip, the group tours many local business to observe their business tactics and learn techniques specific to Italian culture.

For the Weisers, planning the businesses to visit was quite easy.

“Well, all of our business

trips are with companies that are owned or managed by my wife’s family,” Mark said. “For instance, this year we actually went to a cheese factory called Auricchio, where Angela’s cousin Antonio works.”

Angela was born in America, but her parents grew up it Italy. She has a lot of family in Italy, and the students get the opportunity to learn from the family members careers.

“Anybody can call an embassy, or anybody can go to a bank and make those connections, but these are small-time entrepreneurial businesses that started in a garage or they had two dozen chickens and now they have the largest chicken farm in that

region,” Angela said.

Students get the opportunity to tour and see grassroots businesses and learn from entrepreneurial mindsets of Angela’s cousins.

Also for Angela, it is also one time a year she can count on visiting her cousins.

“It is wonderful,” Angela said. “I do not get to see them very often. Maybe once or twice a year, if that.

Keeping those connections is really, really important to me.”

Along with the business tours, the students are also welcomed for a homecooked Italian meal.

Each March, Angela’s aunt opens up her home to 50 American students.

cover s to ry This experience left a lasting impression on Oklahoma State senior Morgan Halliwell when she went on the trip two years ago.

“I loved getting to see Mrs. Weiser’s family and getting to see how much love and thought goes into everything they do,” Halliwell said. “They were so sweet to all of us and welcomed us in their home to eat and drink homemade wine and pizza.”

This unique experience also stood out to Dylan Fix, an Oklahoma State junior who went on the trip last year.

Fix felt as if this were a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“Meeting Mrs. Weiser’s family gave me a whole new perspective on the country,” Fix said. “They lived in a small town that didn’t attract tourists, and because of this I felt like I experienced something that most people would never get to do or see while visiting Italy.”

In this one-on-one experience, there was a language barrier. Houghton said it did not hold her back from seeing the character of the family.

“It was cool because we could not communicate with them, but they were so friendly and shared a lot with us, so you could just tell they were good people,” Houghton said.

To Angela, this friendliness and openness is something she has grown up with her whole life. It is Italian culture.

something she treasures.

“Growing up in a place that had so many people who were Italian and everybody’s traditions were the same, I just like exposing people to different things that are not vastly different than theirs that they are terrified of them, but still different how we do things in the U.S.,” Angela said.

The opportunity to see firsthand what made Italy unique is what was the most valuable to Houghton.

“The most valuable thing was the Italian culture that I learned,” Houghton said. “It was just crazy learning little things that they do differently than us, even as simple as their greetings and you have to pay for water there. Also, seeing Pompeii and the Colosseum, they just have so much history there.”

For some students, this was their first time to travel to Europe or out of the country.

The Weisers want this trip to prove to students there is nothing to be scared of about a new place and a new culture and inspire them to learn more about the world.

“We want them leaving wanting a little more because these sort of experiences when they are this short are just to give them comfort that they can do it on their own,” Mark said.

“They have their whole life to go back and do the things they love.”

This trip is about exposure. Exposure to a new culture and also exposure to pulling college students out of their comfort zone and giving them the confidence to travel the world. It’s all in hopes the students will one day go back, Angela Weiser

said.

“Our hopes are that you have had a sampling and once you get a job and you have the funds and the means to go yourself, you know where you want to go and you can spend more time in an individual city and truly explore it and get everything out of it that you want,” Angela said.

For Fix, this trip did just that. It opened her eyes that going abroad is not something to fear.

“One of the most valuable things I learned was that traveling abroad is not scary,” Fix said. “Everyone I met was welcoming and almost everyone in all the major cities still spoke English. Yes, you need to be safe and prepared at all times, but I think some people over exaggerate the dangers of going abroad.”

The opportunity to share culture and family were big reasons the Weisers began this trip, but there is also another opportunity the couple values.

“The reason we do this and we have done this for so long is to get to know students,” Mark said. “Here in Stillwater, I am in a class and I have a section of 104 students. When you have 104 students, you are lucky if you remember the names of 20; however, if you spend nine days, day and night with students, you actually get to know something about them.”

Review: BTS welcomes new fans to K-pop with new EP “Map of the Soul: Persona” M egan Hays , N e ws Ed ito r , @o c olly

Members of BTS, the unstoppable K-pop boy group, have reportedly been taken to the hospital due to broken backs and legs from supporting the entire K-pop industry.

K-pop is taking America by storm and BTS is helping lead the charge with this comeback. BTS is back with its sixth EP “Map of the Soul: Persona,” showing a softer, cuter side than its previous comebacks. The songs on this album, including the title track, show how BTS has developed to captivate an international audience.

The song “Boy with Luv” featuring Halsey is charming and catchy, starting with Jimin, V and Jin using softer voices to lead up into the pre-chorus. Halsey’s voice is mainly used for the “Oh my my,” and a few English phrases in the chorus, adding a feminine tone to the sweet and playful song. This makes Suga’s deep, slower rap sound a little out of place, especially when compared to J-Hope and RM’s raps later in the song. The rap isn’t bad, though. In fact, it sounds unique and interesting with Suga playing with the rhythm and tone of his voice, it just doesn’t feel like it belongs with the light and playful beat.

The next song on the album, “Mikrokosmos,” has a dreamy quality to it. The sparkling rhythm that starts off the song transitions to WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17, 2019

Jungkook and V’s simple vocals in the first verse.

J-Hope gets to demonstrate a softer side of his voice with a rare instance where he actually sings. The beat intensifies into a climax at the start of the chorus with Jimin and Jungkook carrying the heightened emotion of the song.

With a slight departure from the previously mentioned songs, “HOME” has a cool, synthetically-jazzy intro beat before the synthesized voices of Jimin and V take over. The vibe created from the effects in the background music and on their voices creates a sound that isn’t usually associated with K-pop, giving it a unique flavor when compared to the other songs on the album.

J-Hope and Suga’s raps as the second verse add to the difference with the more upbeat flow of their raps and energy in their voices.

The two slow songs on the album, “Make It Right” and “Jamais vu,” give the listener a break from the more energetic songs. Ed Sheeran is listed as one of the writers for “Make It Right,” and the tone of the song makes that evident. The almost upbeat beat provides a neutral background, but the synthetic trumpet and overflowing emotions from the guys’ voices classify it as a new take on the standard love song. The piano in the background of “Jamais vu” highlight the vocal talent BTS has. Half way through the song, the beat speeds up and allows for J-Hope

and Suga to show off their emotional rapping.

Most of the album follows the first track’s theme of gentle, soft vocals and playful beats. Even the hard hitting and hype style of rap that J-Hope and RM use in the group’s more powerhouse singles like “Idol” or “Mic Drop” are adapted to fit the song’s theme.

With that in mind, “Intro: Persona” and “Dionysus” are the exact opposites of the rest of the album. “Intro: Persona” is an RM solo, and while the flow of this rap is fire, the background music doesn’t do it any favors. It seems like an odd choice to have as an intro to a much softer sounding album.

“Dionysus” has an odd vibe for this album as well. It is reminiscent of BTS’s old songs like “Boy in Luv” or even “We Are Bulletproof Pt. 2” with some of the rap line’s rhythms and the rock inspired beat. Jimin, J-Hope, Jungkook and V’s alternating parts in the chorus make the lyrics dynamic and the overall song exciting.

Even with the somewhat inconsistent theme, the album demonstrates BTS’s talent for doing songs that express different sides of themselves. If this is America’s first taste of K-pop and to BTS, this was the album to listen to.
