Oklahoma State University is known for its traditions, but some traditions took longer than others to gain popularity on campus.

The Student Union Activities Board’s Dragonfly is one of those traditions.

Shantel Mandalay, a drag queen from Oklahoma City, got to experience her first Dragonfly on Thursday evening.

“Actually it’s kind of ironic, when I went to school here at OSU, we attempted to have this,” Mandalay said. “That was 20 years ago, and we have 25 people come to our show and it was so unsuccessful. They didn’t do it again the next year.”

Dragonfly is now one of SUAB’s signature events that has people wrap a line around the second floor of the Student Union hoping to get one of the 486 seats available in the Student Union Theater.

OSU Queer & Allies President Andy Baker said the acceptance of this kind of display of the LGBTQ culture is encouraging.

“Representation of our people is very important here, especially at OSU,” Baker said. “It is monuMONDAY, APRIL 15, 2019

mental because it is the one time of the year that a lot of us get to be our authentic selves.”

For some of the students on campus, the best way to feel their true selves is to perform in front of their peers as their drag personas.

Each year, Dragonfly has several student drag queens like Olivia Lycan compete with drag lip sync performances. Lycan is this year’s Queen of Paradise.

“It’s good, I’m glad that they are accepting of it and actually love it like I do… it’s just so empowering, I love it so much,” Lycan said.

“Last year I was sitting in the audience and to be here this year and to have actually won is just such an amazing thing to me.”

Lycan wasn’t the only one to be inspired to try drag after experiencing Dragonfly. Patricia (Pat) Thai helped organize the event while she was a student here. Pat Thai is now a drag queen in Oklahoma City and was invited to perform alongside other drag queens this year.

“It feels amazing to have a hand in something that is going to have such a great impact on the university and to leave a really great legacy behind,” Thai said. “A lot of us don’t

In the 12 years since Thai’s first Dragonfly and the 20 years since Mandalay’s failed attempt to bringing drag to campus, Dragonfly has become one of the centerpiece events for the LGBTQ community on campus.

“Now they’ve brought Dragonfly back, so it’s really amazing to see how everyone supports it now,” Mandalay said.

“I started when there was a time of… it was looked down upon, and now I think with the mainstreaming of “Rupaul’s Drag Race,” it gives people an opportunity to realize and gives more acceptance. So I think it is great that this

event was so successful tonight.”

Baker said they hope this event and other LGBTQ events help inform people about the community on campus.

“Pretty much the Dragonfly culture embodies what we as the LGBTQ community have striven for here on campus, which is to have our voices heard, to be seen as equals, to

have an event where we can bring in a crowd just as equal to that as the non-LGBTQ community,” Baker said. “I really hope that we bring home a message that we, as queers, are here on campus and we are here to have an impact.”

On a gloomy Saturday morning when most people might prefer to sleep in, the Stillwater Airport was abuzz with activity.

The Oklahoma State University Flying Aggies Fly-In and Car Show was held at the Stillwater Airport on Saturday morning. The Fly-In featured static aircraft displays, a car show and a kid’s zone.

“The event is basically just to get people from the community out and show them aviation,” said Flying Aggies Vice President Jacob Boules.

“When we’re in the aviation program, we’re surrounded by it a lot of the time, but the

community might not know about it. We want to ... get the community involved with aviation so they can look at planes, get kids interested in aviation and pretty much just promote it. Share the love.”

The Fly-In was a fundraiser for the Flying Aggies to help their flight team go to the National Intercollegiate Flying Association’s (NIFA) Safecon competition in May. The national competition includes a variety of events for students to compete in, including precision landings, navigation and aircraft recognition.

The OSU flight team has done well at nationals in the past. At Safecon 2018, the flight team placed 11th. The team placed 1st at regionals three years in a row and this year they placed 2nd, Boules said.

“Also at nationals, the Grover Loening Trophy is given away,” Boules said. “That’s given away to the best overall collegiate flight program in the nation. OSU has won that 21 times, which is 17 more times than any other school.”

The Flying Aggies will bring 15 people and five or six planes to the national competition this year, Boules said. He said he hopes they can continue to be successful at nationals.

NIFA Safecon 2019 will be held in Madison, Wisconsin, May 13-19.

On August 19, 2018, Oklahoma State men’s golfer Viktor Hovland won the U.S Amateur Championship.

Winning the title meant the Norwegian-born golfer could compete in the 2019 Masters, U.S. Open and Open Championship.

In the 2019 Masters tournament, Hovland finished 3-under-par and had the lowest score among the six amateurs competing.

In the last round of the Masters, Hovland shot 1-under-par.

2-under-par for 36th place. Alex Noren rounded out the Cowboys at 8-over-par. His score was tied for last among golfers who made Friday’s cut.

The tournament was historic for Hovland as he became the first Norweigan golfer to compete at the Masters.

Hovland finished the tournament tied for 32nd place.

Hovland’s next professional tournament will be at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach where he won the U.S. Amateur championship.

When Hovland competes at the U.S. Open, the Cowboys’ golf season would have already com-

pleted.

It is still uncertain if Hovland will remain on the team after the season or turn pro.

As Hovland travels back to Stillwater, the Cowboys will gear up for the Big 12 tournament before competing in the NCAA championship in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

“Back to school tomorrow,” Hovland said. “(We’re) grinding it out and trying to get the repeat at nationals.”
