Azerbaijan might not be a familiar country to many Americans aside from, perhaps, political junkies and geography buffs, but for Oklahoma State students it will soon feel much closer.

The small country of 10 million people, with a land size comparable to South Carolina, is nestled within the Caucasus Mountains and tends most often to remain secluded from American news. Despite the somewhat quiet nature of this post-Soviet republic, a delegation of government officials and agricultural industry leaders arrived in Oklahoma last week for a series of forums.

The forums were tasked with building international business partnerships between the two states. As a result, OSU students were provided a glimpse into government agricultural priorities in Azerbaijan, including new international partnerships.

The Azerbaijani delegation’s three-day, whirlwind tour of Oklahoma kicked off with a visit to Oklahoma State University on Nov. 6. It included stops at the Robert M. Kerr Food and Agricultural Products Center, the Ferguson Family Dairy Center and the Wes Watkins Center for International Trade and Development. Through these tours, Azerbaijani agricultural companies

were able to learn from the methods, technology and research developed by the many innovators at Oklahoma State.

As a sort of finale to the day of international collaboration in Stillwater, OSU and the Azerbaijan State Agrarian University signed a formal partnership agreement.

OSU’s new partner university, located in Ganja, Azerbaijan, is home to nearly 4,000 students and serves as the country’s primary source of higher education for the agricultural sector. The “Memorandum of Understanding” was signed at the Wes Watkins Center by Provost and Vice President of OSU Gary Sandefur along with ASAU Rector Ibrahim Jafarov, presided over by the Azerbaijani Minister of Agriculture, Inam Karimov. This historic new partnership is expected to promote international cooperation between the two universities, while potentially paving the way for new exchanges between students and faculty.

The signings at the Wes Watkins Center were preceded by a talk from Dr. Jaidev Singh, Mission Director to Azerbaijan of The United States Agency for International Development. USAID has a mission “to partner to end extreme poverty and to promote resilient, democratic societies while advancing the security and prosperity of the United States.”

Singh also discussed many of the national security challenges faced

by Azerbaijan, a country bordered by Russia to the north and Iran to the south, and how its neighbors pose risks for extremism.

USAID missions in the country have sought to increase independent incomes earned by women through agriculture, as well as piggyback off successful agro-tourism efforts seen in states such as Oklahoma. Singh spoke on why agro-tourism is seen as critical to the stability of rural Azerbaijan.

“Any country that gets tourists is going to be safer than a country that does not get tourists,” Singh said.

Another major effort of USAID Azerbaijan is to increase the quality of English education in the country, providing Azeris with alternative news sources over traditional Russian outlets. Singh commented on his work.

“It’s a great career, being a diplomat,” Singh said. “I hope that some of you can join our family of diplomats overseas.”

In addition to the newly formed bond between OSU and ASAU, a sister city agreement was signed between the cities of Stillwater and Gadabay, Azerbaijan. The small, mountainous city of Gadabay in the far west of Azerbaijan becomes Stillwater’s second official sister city, after Kameoka, Japan.

represented in the Oklahoma-Azerbaijan Agricultural Forum as it moved into Oklahoma City later in the week. On Friday, a lineup of speakers including Governor Kevin Stitt, Representative Markwayne Mullin, and Azerbaijan Ambassador Suleymanov brought in a wide range of state agricultural leaders interested in building bridges with Azerbaijani businesses. Stitt spoke about the forums.

“Establishing international investments and trade opportunities is really important for our state”, Stitt said. “Oklahoma’s central location I think is really, really critical to the global market.”

He went on to declare Nov. 9 “Azerbaijan Day” in Oklahoma.

The forum held in Oklahoma City also included various panels relating to bilateral trade and investments, agricultural education, modern technologies in livestock production and animal health, calling upon the expertise of OSU once again.

Schatzer and Oklahoma State Program Leader of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Community Economic Development Dr. Taylor. OSU’s dedication to agricultural innovation was similarly reflected in the sentiments of Minister Karimov. “(As) the world population is growing steadily, agriculture and food security have become the issues of our highest priority, for all countries,” Karimov said. “The challenges to feed the world sustainably are huge.”

Following the events of the past week, there is a hope that Oklahoma’s new partnerships with Azerbaijan will usher in a future of continued collaboration across the globe.

Lindy Waters III remembers his teammates getting more physical in practice ahead of the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team’s first road trip during his freshman year. “(Davon) Dillard, Leyton (Hammonds) and all of them, they did it to me and I feel like it made us a lot better freshman year,” Waters said.

Now that Waters is a Cowboy veteran and captain, he felt that it was time to return the favor to this year’s freshman before the Cowboys travel to face Charleston.

Lindy had a simple answer on how the veterans rehashed the physical play they previously faced. “(We) just beat them up in practice.”

Freshman guard Avery Anderson III welcomed the physical play with open arms.

“They’ve been beating us up pretty well,” Anderson said. “I mean I’m used to it. I’m pretty sure all the other freshmen are used to it. Just on the AAU circuit or whatever circuit they played on, they’re playing against top-notch competition.”

Anderson, who is no stranger to playing in front of large crowds on the road while in high

school, said he’s ready for the Cowboys’ away game against the Cougars on Wednesday.

OSU and the Cougars faced off last year in Stillwater, and the Cowboys came out with a commanding 70-58 victory.

Coach Mike Boynton believes this will be a challenging game for his team. “(I) got a lot of respect for that program,” Boynton said. “Earl Grant has done a tremendous job of instilling what he believes in, and obviously they have one of the best players in the country.”

Boynton said the main focus against Riller is to wear him down.

“Our focus will be on limiting his efficiency,” Boynton said. “(We will be) throwing a lot of dif-

ferent bodies at him, trying to wear him down over the course of the game and a lot of times with a guy like that, he’s gonna score because he’s gonna have so many opportunities and you just wanna make him work for everything he gets.”

Last year, Waters, Issac Likekele, Cameron McGriff and Thomas Dziagwa all scored in double figures against the Cougars.

The Cowboys, who are known for their 3-point shooting abilities with Waters and Dziagwa, shot 45.5 percent from beyond the arc in the win.

This season, however, the Cowboys haven’t shot as many 3-pointers and getting the ball inside to its big men more. Boynton wants to maintain its level of improvement as OSU heads to the east.

“We were obviously able to show that we can be a team that doesn’t have to live and die by the three-ball,” Boynton said.

Kara Wehmeyer was running a couple Cowgirl tennis players through resistance band routines before their doubles match when she sensed something was off.

The Oklahoma State women’s tennis team was in Newport Beach, California, to compete in the ITA National Fall Championships. Around 6 p.m. on Friday, Wehmeyer saw the head official and athletic trainer walk off the court and decided to investigate.

Had she not been so curious, the night may have turned out very differently.

Wehmeyer heard them say something about an

athlete being down and begun searching her way through the labyrinth of courts at the Newport Beach Tennis Club. She wanted to help in any way she could.

“They were saying something about looking for the right court,” Wehmeyer said. “The layout was kind of confusing, so I was seeing if maybe I could spot the person.

“Then I hear someone yell, ‘He’s back here! Has 911 been called? I think he’s having a heart attack.’”

The court the man collapsed on was in a sectioned off area of the facility, so there weren’t many spectators. The coaches moved any players away.

man, he was unresponsive.

He wasn’t breathing. He had no pulse.

Wehmeyer and the head athletic trainer instantly jumped into CPR. She took over chest compressions while the trainer got an automatic external defibrillator ready, which they luckily had on site. Wehmeyer credited the athletic trainer for being prepared.

Otherwise, she doesn’t think the man would have had a chance.

They shocked the man with the defibrillator and did some more compressions.

That’s when he miraculously came to.

“No athletic trainer can handle anything traumatic on their own,” Wehmeyer said. “I just went over there

to see if there was anything I can do to help. Once I heard 911 had been called, I just know there’s so much that can be done before (the paramedics) get here.”

Wehmeyer, 24, is in her first season as Cowgirl tennis’ athletic trainer.

A native of Holts Summit, Missouri, Wehmeyer comes from a family that was heavily involved in fire and emergency medical services. She’s a thirdgeneration firefighter, and her parents are assistant fire chiefs back home.

Wehmeyer followed in her family’s footsteps and got her EMS license and worked in that field for a short while. But there was one aspect of the emergency field that she didn’t like.

She wanted to be able to

communicate and establish connections with the people she worked with. “(As an EMT), once you drop a patient off at the hospital then essentially you don’t know the outcome and you don’t hear anything from that patient,” Wehmeyer said.

“But as an athletic trainer, I get to do emergency care, rehabilitation and I also get to build relationships with the athletes.”

She played all sorts of sports growing up, and decided athletic training was a way to combine sports and her medical and safety background. Wehmeyer heard about a job opening at Oklahoma State and it was an instant match.

Wehmeyer said she’s had a great time in her new

position, but she couldn’t have expected what transpired that night. It was just a routine day on the job until she instinctually sprang into action. Coach Chris Young tweeted about Wehmeyer heroics, deeming her the team’s MVP that night.

She’s just relieved that she was in the position to help.

“I came down for the interview and I just fell in love with OSU,” Wehmeyer said. “It’s gonna offer me a lot of great opportunities. I felt like this is where God was calling me so here I am.”

“I mean no one likes to see that, but it’s always a great day whenever you have a good outcome.”

Growing up in Long Island, N.Y., Andrew Parker had a passion for music at a young age.

It all began when Parker sat down to play on his grandmother’s piano at 5 years old.

“My grandmother had a piano in her house, and one day she saw me sitting down at the piano and just playing things that I heard on the radio or on TV,” said Parker, new assistant professor of oboe at Oklahoma State. “And she told my parents, ‘You should get him piano lessons because clearly, he has an ear for it.’

“So, I started playing piano, then I joined choir, and I finally joined the band around fourth grade. My love for music just grew from there.”

For the first time ever, the OSU Wind Ensemble will perform at the McKnight Center for Performing Arts, alongside Parker.

Under the direction of Joseph Missal, the OSU Wind Ensemble will be presenting “Vientos d’España” Thursday in the McKnight Center for the Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m.

Parker will make his debut as a soloist

in one of the pieces presented in the concert, Oscar Navarro’s “Legacy.”

Parker realized he had a gift for playing the oboe while auditioning for college.

“At first, I was auditioning for schools for both voice and oboe,” Parker said. “I was planning on choosing whatever program I get into that gives me the most money and that’s the direction I will go in.

“Then, at the last second, I was auditioning for schools and something with the oboe just clicked. I was having really good auditions and getting into all the schools I wanted. It just felt right.”

Playing the oboe doesn’t come easy, Parker said.

“Someone once told me, there are a lot of great singers out there, but not a lot of great oboe players. You may have a better shot at making a career as a musician if you choose the oboe,” Parker said.

“What no one told me was that the oboe is also really, really hard.”

However, a challenge never stopped Parker. He received his master’s in oboe performance from Yale University School of Music and then received his doctorate in music performance

from the University of Texas in Austin in 2013.

After graduating, Parker knew he wanted to use his love and knowledge of music to teach younger musicians.

“There’s something very special about a career in music,” Parker said. “As musicians, music is ingrained in our brain and bodies.

You know, there is no going home, and the workday is done. I go home and practice, or study piece of music I’m working on, or facetime with students and work with them.

It never stops, and the best part is it never feels like work, it’s just something I love doing.”

After applying for jobs at several universities, Parker said he felt a strong connection to the music students and faculty at OSU. “I appreciate that the school of music is very clearly dedicated to the progress of each individual student,” Parker said. “That’s something I didn’t see as much at other universities. Having the opportunity to be a part of this fulfills my dream of working with students and a team of faculty who all feel that way is a really amazing thing.”

Parker said he enjoys being able to play alongside students.

For the first time ever, the OSU Wind Ensemble will perform at the McKnight Center for Performing Arts, alongside Andrew Parker.

“It’s great to see all these students performing at such a high level and really loving it,” Parker said. ““Legacy” is a difficult piece, but very rewarding and a blast to play.”

Missal said Parker first sparked the idea of an entirely Spanish and Mexican composition.

“When I interviewed Dr. Parker for the job, I asked him if I were to feature you in an ensemble, what would you like to play?” Missal said. “And he came up with this brilliant piece called “Legacy,” which I wasn’t familiar with. It’s a beautiful, twenty-five-minute Spanish oboe concerto and I just built the pro-

gram around it.”

All of the music featured in the concert was written by Mexican or Spanish composers, Missal said.

“This is my first concert where I think we’ve done all Spanish music, I didn’t intend it that way, it just evolved,” Missal said.

“It’s all very different, but from the same historical perspective, and it flows really, really beautifully.”

Missal said Parker is a great addition to the school of music.

“He’s a delightful colleague and an excellent oboe player,” Missal said. “We are very excited to perform our first official concert at

McKnight with him.”

Parker said he looks forward to the future of arts programs at OSU. “There are so many wonderful things coming up in the future,” Parker said. “Not only do we now have the incredible McKnight Center, but the Greenwood School of Music is going to be opening up in a few years from now, which will totally be a game changer for the school of music.

“If you are involved in any of the arts, now is the time to be at OSU.” Tickets for the concert are $7 for students and $12 for general admission.

Wayne Gretzky and Howie Mendel probably don’t have a lot in common.

They’re both Canadian, they’re both worldwide celebrities and they’re both fans of Oklahoma State’s star running back Chuba Hubbard.

That might be the extent of their list of similarities.

Hubbard, OSU’s running back who arrived in Stillwater two years ago from Alberta Park, Ontario, Canada, went into last week’s bye week leading the nation in rushing yards with 1,604.

Hubbard has rested two out of the past five Saturdays because of OSU’s unusually configured schedule this season that placed the Cowboys’ two open weeks abnormally close to each other on the season schedule.

Throughout the first half of the year, Hubbard has dominated the national rushing landscape and has blown statistical comparisons out of the water, but most who follow college football assumed the rest of the running back pool would catch up to Hubbard through this part of the season, especially because of OSU’s two open weeks.

Now, despite OSU coming off its second open week of the season, which essentially gave the other top running backs a chance to gain some ground on

OSU’s Canadian speedster, Hubbard still resides atop the NCAA rushing list.

Entering the final stretch of the 2019 campaign, Hubbardl leads the nation in total rushing yards and rushing yards per game with 178.2, and he’s second in rushing touchdowns with 18.

Hubbard’s out-of-thisworld numbers have placed him in the conversation for the Heisman Trophy, and OSU has been able to embrace his Canadian roots in his campaign for college football’s most prestigious individual accolade.

“It’s cool and I appreciate all the love,” Hubbard said of his video shoutout from Canadian-born comedian Mendel, who declared that Hubbard “deserves the Heisman” not just because of his record-setting performances this season, but also because of his Canadian heritage.

“I always appreciate that type of stuff, but like I’ve always said, I try not to focus on it too much,” Hubbard said. “I just really care about winning games. It’s all cool and stuff and I’m honored to be in this position, but that’s not my main focus.”

Hubbard has taken advantage of OSU’s bye weeks by resting his body in an attempt to stay healthy through the conclusion of the season despite his high usage rate and him being the focal point of OSU’s opponents’ defensive game plan each week.

Hubbard said this past open week was extremely beneficial for him, and that while he has been trying to rest his body, he’s also been trying to improve on his game and avoid being complacent even though he’s putting up big numbers.

“Running the ball, I’m not perfect at that,” Hubbard said. “Pass protection is something I need to work on. My routes, hands, stuff like that. You can never be too good at something, so I’m always trying to get better at those things.

“I feel good. I’m ready to finish the season strong.”
