Letter to the Editor: If We Remember AS HLEY DEA N guest columnist @ o c olly

If things did not fall into place for me the way they did on Sept. 18, I never would have heard about Jackie Bauer.

If my professor actually showed up for class, I would not have walked out to get home early. To be fair, he was really sick, and he had tried to arrange for us to still have class. Unfortunately, things got muddled up on his end, meaning no substitute for that class, and that we did not find out until 15 minutes after the class was supposed to start.

Still, if not for the misfortune, I would not have been where I now realize I needed to be.

If I had not changed my mind and decided to head to the library for studying, I would not have taken the route that I did. I would have just walked straight to the Student Union to pay my way out of the parking lot and take the uneventful commute back home. Usually, to save on money, I leave as soon as I’m no longer needed, but I knew I had been slacking in some of my classes. It would be worth the extra money to take some time to catch up.

If that one girl had not been sitting there, getting the call that she did, I would have not seen her fall apart and need someone to be there as support. She could have gotten that call all alone, even if she was in class or out to eat.

She could have gone through this without someone to be there as a support. I couldn’t take away her pain, as much as I wanted to, but at least I could make sure she didn’t go FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2018

through that alone.

If I was not comfortable with silence, I would have left her before I even knew she had lost a close friend to suicide. I had learned a few years ago that sometimes, when someone needs support, it’s OK to not know what to say.

Sometimes, it’s better to keep the platitudes, reassurances and pieces of advice from being shared. Sometimes, all someone needs is a person to stay, a shoulder to cry on. If I had not learned that, I would not have been there to hear that she thought that everything was fine with her friend, that she had talked to her just the day before. I would not have understood the level of grief she was going through.

If I was not elected as a student government senator, I would never have received the announcement from others of the passing of fellow Cowgirl Jackie Bauer. I would not have made the connection that the friend that girl lost was the one who took her life. My heart would still reach out to those who knew Jackie, but it never would become a more personal heartache. It would be a wave of sympathy, a sigh of sadness, and then it would have been no more.

If SGA did not decide to pass a resolution to send condolences to her family and friends on Oct. 3, I never would have known her as more than a name, a statistic. I never would have learned that she involved herself heavily in CASNR, became president of the Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow club, tutored others in writing and was a member of the Freshmen in Transition, Living Learning Community from

2015 to 2016. I never would have learned that her passion was to be an advocate for the agricultural industry, that she was particularly interested in the swine industry. I never would have learned that she moved all the way from Maryland just to be a part of our Cowboy family.

If things did not fall into place for me the way they did, she would have one less person to remember her.

If I’m to remember her, I’m going to remember her for the things she did for everyone on this campus. I’m going to remember her fearlessness to leave her family behind to pursue her passions. I’m going to remember how sweet she must have been, to make such a mark on her friends that they would cry at the loss of her. I’m going to remember her so others may be saved from the same fate.

If people who commit suicide are not remembered,

we will never learn how to help others. If they’re only remembered as statistic, we will forget that people who lose the fight with themselves were human. They’re still human. We cannot blame ourselves when we do not see the struggle a friend is having inside. We can still do more, even when we think we’ve done enough. If you send a simple text, telling them something made you think of them, that can be enough to

help them keep up the fight.

If you are the last to pull out of a hug, it gives them the few seconds they need to remember they are loved. If you take time to ask them questions and listen, that can be just enough time for them to air their troubles without feeling any judgement.

“If someone is considering thoughts of suicide, please do not hesitate to walk into Counseling Services,” Holland Gray, an advocate

for suicide awareness and prevention, fellow senator and a friend said. “They’re located in Room 320, and the first five sessions are free. After that, it’s only $10 per session. If someone thinks their friend is considering suicide, do not think asking them straight out will make them commit suicide. Remember that it’s OK to not be OK, and it’s OK to ask someone those really tough questions.”

If we all remember Jackie Bauer, even if we never got to know her, we can save a life.

If we all remember the friends we have lost to their inner demons, we can save a life. If we all remember the friends who are still struggling, who need us to reach out more, we can save a life. If we all remember our brothers and sisters in this Cowboy family, and that we are here for each other no matter how much or little we know about each other, we can save each other.

Although the Oklahoma State equestrian team lost its season opener, it looks to bounce back in a familiar place.

The No. 7 Cowgirls will saddle up for their first home meet of the season against No. 3 Baylor at 10 a.m. Saturday.

OSU (0-1) is coming off a 12-5 loss against No. 2 Texas A&M. Coach Larry Sanchez said despite the loss, the Cowgirls are more than capable of redeeming themselves.

“We have a lot of talent,” Sanchez said. “But when you make mistakes, you cannot get a win

against a top, quality team. We did make mistakes that are definitely fixable and avoidable in the future, and we’ve been working on that since the A&M meet.”

Although the Cowgirls didn’t come out with a victory, there was still a silver lining. Freshman Sydnie Zieglar shined for OSU against A&M. Zieglar stockpiled two points on the flat and over fences in the last meet.

“We knew coming in that she had a lot of talent and that she was potentially going to (be) immediately effective,” Sanchez said. “She showed us that talent in practice in preparation for the A&M meet. She came out with confidence and

didn’t make mistakes. We are very proud of her as a freshman to come in as strong as she did.”

At home, the Cowgirls have an advantage that is uncommon in most collegiate sports. They will compete on their own horses for the first time this season. The Oklahoma State women’s soccer team is staying positive amidst its first losing streak of the season.

After dropping their past two matches against Oklahoma and Texas Tech, the Cowgirls (10-3-1 overall, 2-2-1 Big 12) are looking to break out of their slump on the road Friday against No. 14 Baylor.

Despite the skid, senior Haley Woodard said she and her teammates have regained their upbeat attitudes after getting some extended rest.

ly,” Woodard said. “We’re laughing and smiling and having fun in practice again.”

The Cowgirls have fallen behind in their Big 12 title defense, standing at sixth in the conference.

Going on the road, where OSU has struggled at times, the Cowgirls have a tough test ahead against the Big12-leading Bears.

“We just want to win, period,” said Colin Carmichael, OSU’s coach. “Going down to Baylor is a tough matchup any year, and they’re having a great season, but we’re confident.”

To get a victory, OSU will have to improve coming off a couple of lackluster performances.

The Cowgirls’ offense, which has scored just one goal in the past two games, will need to find a way to get going without senior forward Marlo Zoller. Carmichael said Zoller is out for now and will undergo evaluations week by week.

SGA discusses Canvas, election process at Wednesday meeting jaco b sturm staff reporter @ o c olly

The Oklahoma State University Student Government Association was informed of the improvements and timeline on the switch to Canvas from Brightspace, the online classroom client the school uses.

The campuswide change will not be immediate. During the meeting, Associate Provost and Director Chris Ormsbee said the change will start in January.

Ormsbee said he wouldn’t rule out professors using Brightspace in the immediate future.

“You may have a couple of classes in Canvas

and a couple of classes in Brightspace,” Ormsbee said. “We have to be completely out of Brightspace

by June 2019.”

The advantages of Canvas were brought to the senate’s attention throughout Ormsbee’s presentation.

“Canvas is about 5 years old, D2L is about 25 years old,” Ormsbee said. “D2L, I’m not saying it was a bad one, was built in a browser system.

Canvas was built in an app format.”

Faculty will have the option of training prior to the start of Canvas being utilized around campus.

“We want to make sure that everybody is ready to do this,” Ormsbee said.

Ormsbee said the goal of the switch is to help students and faculty members have all the information they need in the same place.

“We were looking for something that would help you,” Ormsbee said.

“All the faculty from all the colleges were pretty excited with Canvas.”

The cost of Canvas will be more than the cost of Brightspace for the university.

“We felt like what we were getting (in improvements) was worth the change,” Ormsbee said.

SGA Vice Chair Mason Russell said that the senate moved the selection for these seats to a special election that would occur separately from the regular elections for SGA. “Theoretically, there could be four elections in

a year,” Russell said. “It is up to the students to have their voices heard in these kinds of elections.”

SGA members widely expected that the turnout for the proposed special election would not match the voter turnout for the regular elections. The final day to register to vote

in the elections is Oct. 12.

SGA Senator Mason Martin proposed to amend the bill to make the elections for unfilled seats occur later in the semester. The bill suggests that such elections occur four weeks into the semester. The senate amended the proposed bill and send it back to the Internal Affairs Committee for further discussion.

SGA will meet again at 7 p.m Wednesday in Student Union Case Study 2.

‘Ultimate Fishing Simulator’: The best fishing game to date b rad en fos ter staff reporter @ bfosteros u

Fishing games have often received the same bad rap that real fishing gets: boring, uneventful and time-consuming. Although these are core values of fishing that can’t be shaken no matter how hard you try, “Ultimate Fishing Simulator” does everything it can to make it fun.

On first impression, this game is gorgeous. The water reflects the nice blue sky perfectly, and your line makes small, realistic ripples as you cast. Fish react realistically, following your line or leaving when you don’t have the right bait for it. Gameplay is simplistic, with a few clicks of the mouse casting and FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2018

reeling the line and clearly defined controls in the bottom left. You’ll feel like a fishing master in no time.

The most surprisingly well-thought-out part of the game is the sound design. Part of fishing is the quiet, and this game captures it perfectly.

The lapping of water, sound of the wildlife around you and casting of the line are insanely immersive. If you want to add to the experience, you can enable the radio, which can play a variety of radios from the internet. I stuck to a good ‘80s playlist, and it made the waiting for fish to bite a joy.

This game goes beyond just catching fish as well. Every fish you catch can be released or caught, giving you experience and cash to upgrade your player or equipment. The joy

of finally getting that new rod and line after an hour of catching fish is a rewarding experience. Without this part of the game, fishing simulators can get dull quickly. Between needing money for equipment, bait and lines, you also need to buy fishing licenses to unlock new areas, which have more unique types of fish in them.

Part of the game that becomes frustrating is, of course, waiting for fish to bite. No matter how much games spice it up, you still need to get the fish to bite. This is lessened by the beautiful ambiance and different strategies, but it is still there. When you do get the bite, however, the real game begins. Catching a fish is no easy task, as you’ll need to wear the fish down enough to pull it in. You do this by

moving the line opposite the fish’s path, but not too far or you’ll snap the line. Some fish cannot be caught with lower tier lines, and you’ll need to upgrade.

Included in the game are all kinds of fishing: ice fishing, fly fishing and regular bobber fishing. However players want

to tackle an area, they have the options to do it. This game excels in part because of the gameplay, but what seals the deal is the stuff outside of the boat.

This game has no microtransactions, a quick level up system, money is earned quickly so it doesn’t feel like

a chore and the only restrictions on areas you can fish are the relatively cheap licenses.

Within an hour of the game, you get the feeling it is truly unlimited in exploration, Whether you like fishing or not, “Ultimate Fishing Simulator” is a great little slice of relaxation that anyone can enjoy. Despite the natural problems with fishing, this game makes it so much fun to just sit and listen to music that I can’t help but enjoy myself.

I’d recommend this game for anyone that needs to relax a little in their life.

Crime notes: Drunken race down Washington Street and more el li e m elero staff reporter @ el e an o r _m el er o

Burn, baby, burn Around 10:20 p.m. on Oct. 2 Stillwater police responded to a home disturbance call regarding a vandalized vehicle.

Upon arrival, the police found that the fuel tank on a maroon Dodge Durango was damaged and the owner of the vehicle insisted that she knew who had done it. After further questioning about the suspect the police found no reason to link him to the vandalism, according to police reports.

About 11:15 p.m. police were dispatched to the same residence, this time for an arson investigation. When police arrived, the Dodge Durango was completely engulfed in flames. Police began looking for Michael Leon James, 35, whom the vehicle’s owner accused of vandalism earlier that night.

James was eventually found and arrested for public intoxication, but police reports say that there was no evidence linking James to the car fire.

After questioning the owner of the vehicle one of the officers noted that he found it suspicious how often the victim had brought up the vehicle’s insurFRIDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2018

ance policy. It was then also noted that the license plate was missing from the vehicle.

One witness said to have seen a rag or towel hanging out of the gas cap portion of the vehicle prior to the entire vehicle catching fire and that the rag or towel was on fire. No remnants of a rag or towel were found and Stillwater firefighters informed police that a total vehicle fire could not be started in that manner, according to police reports.

The culprit is still not known.

Don’t try to shake the police

Around 11 p.m. on Oct. 3 two Oklahoma State University students were arrested after a traffic stop.

While driving eastbound on 11th Avenue, two officers noticed a vehicle taking an odd route from Stanley Street to Sixth Avenue.

The route the vehicle was taking had multiple stop signs and as the officers followed they noticed that the car was back tracking and seemed to be trying to shake them, according to police reports.

At the stop sign on Fourth Avenue and Orchard Street the driver failed to stop behind the sign, which is a traffic violation. The two officers pulled the car over.

A Payne County sheriff patrol car is on display at the Oklahoma State Fair.

When the driver opened her window, the officer smelled the strong odor of perfume that had just been sprayed, which the officer found suspicious, according to police reports.

He asked for her license and registration and identified the driver as Savannah Pearl Reynolds, 19. The passenger was identified as Bailey Nicole McVey, 19.

While speaking with Reynolds the officer noticed that she seemed extremely nervous and was acting suspiciously, according to the report. While one officer spoke with Reynolds, the other officer went to the passenger side window and tapped on it a couple times

until McVey rolled the window down. When the window was rolled down both officers smelled marijuana, according to the report.

Both occupants of the vehicle were asked to step outside of the vehicle. McVey was visibly under the influence of marijuana and admitted to having smoked five minutes prior to the traffic stop, according to the report.

A sobriety test was performed on Reynolds and it was determined that she was not yet intoxicated.

A search of the vehicle yielded a pipe, a small bag with marijuana, and two containers with marijuana residue. Reynolds was arrested for possession of marijuana and drug

paraphernalia. McVey was arrested for public intoxication, according to police reports.

Drunken race About 3 a.m. on Oct. 1 a Stillwater police officer witnessed two male suspects steal a Bud Light poster from a sign outside The Union Beverage Co. on Washington Street.

The officer followed in his vehicle until the suspects reached Dupree’s, when the officer parked and exited his vehicle. He told the two men to stop. Both men began running away and the officer pursued them on foot. During the chase, one of the men ran inside the Alpha Gamma Rho fraternity house, according

The officer chased the other man, later identified as Austin Blake Williams, 19, until he was able to stop him on the north side of the AGR building. Williams smelled strongly of alcohol. He refused to give up the identity of his companion, according to police reports.

Williams was arrested for vandalism, larceny and public intoxication, according to reports.

Mike Gundy has seen it before.

Although he and the Oklahoma State football team are preparing for a change of scenery, the Cowboys coach doesn’t expect every aspect of the upcoming matchup against Kansas State to look different from the past weekend.

OSU (4-2 overall, 1-2 Big 12) travels to Bill Snyder Family Stadium to face the Wildcats at 11 a.m. Saturday. Gundy predicted the Cowboy defense might have flashbacks to the Iowa State game when it experiences how K-State’s offense operates.

“I think you’re gonna see what we just saw last Saturday,” Gundy said. “I think they’re (the Wildcats) built for that. I think our defense is gonna get a big dose of what they saw Saturday.”

But the Cowboys are striving to look different from the struggling squad that fell to the Cyclones.

ISU unleashed a high-powered offensive attack at Boone Pickens Stadium and surprised OSU 48-42.

The Cowboy defense allowed ISU to accumulate 465 yards, including 325 passing yards.

“I think they’re gonna give this their best shot because they can see some weaknesses, and they’re gonna take advantage of it of course,” Williams said. “We just have to be prepared … I think if we’re the more disciplined team and we just do our assignments, we should be fine.”
