Some students and faculty might remember a few years ago when Oklahoma State University updated its learning management system, or LMS, to Brightspace by Desire2Learn.

There are plans to change it again in 2019.

OSU has used D2L as its LMS since 2005. In summer 2015, the university adopted a major update in the LMS called Brightspace by D2L, which is what OSU currently uses for its online classroom.

Christine Ormsbee, the associate provost/director for the OSU Institute for Teaching and Learning Excellence, has been working toward changing the LMS from D2L. “A couple of years ago, I thought it would be a good time to look around and see what else was going on in learning management systems,” Ormsbee said.

“We have faculty that really, really likes it, but we also have faculty who really, really were struggling with it. It wasn’t doing the things they wanted it to do.”

In 2014, Ormsbee formed an informal committee to look into possibly changing the LMS for OSU. The committee identified what it considered to be the top 10 LMSs at universities across the country.

The members discussed the different features and advantages each one had to offer and ultimately invited

six vendors to do online demonstrations. At the same time, they conducted a survey with faculty and students to assess overall satisfaction with D2L. “With that information and with the vendor demos, the group at the time was heavily interested in Canvas,” Ormsbee said.

We can’t predict injuries in sports. We just can’t.

When a player goes down with a season-ending knee injury like Oklahoma running back Rodney Anderson did Saturday, we’re all reminded of the sobering, dangerous aspect that comes with the sport we know and love.

Anderson’s injury occurred on the last play of the first quarter of OU’s matchup with UCLA on Saturday afternoon in Norman, hours before OSU kicked off against South Alabama on Saturday evening in Stillwater.

“It hurts because it could happen to anybody,” said Justice Hill, an OSU running back. “Unfortunately for him, he’s out for the rest of the season. But you can’t really look at that from my end. You just gotta go out there and keep playing.”

The randomness of injuries in football cannot be avoided because of the physicality of each play.

But the risk of injury can be minimized, and that was Gundy’s goal all along.

“You never know when it’s gonna happen,” Gundy said. “It’s one of the most difficult things to swallow as a coach … Life is not always what we expect it to be. It’s definitely a marathon and not a sprint.”

Gundy didn’t receive news of the injury until after he finally left Boone Pickens Stadium to go home early Sunday morn-

ing.

“My 13-year-old asked me when I got home, I got home at 12:30 or whatever on Saturday night, ‘How come Justice Hill didn’t play more? What’s wrong with him?,’” Gundy said.

“And I said, ‘Well, we got way ahead … I just don’t feel comfortable leaving him in the game when we’re way ahead.’

“That doesn’t mean you can prevent anything from happening, but that’s why we always lean in that direction.”

Review: St. Paul & The Broken Bones create best album yet v i c tor an gu ian o staff reporter @ o c olly

Alabama natives St. Paul & The Broken Bones have evolved through the years.

With their third album “Young Sick Camellia,” they had some experimental fun.

Since they established themselves as legitimate groove masters with the release of their first album “Half the City,” St. Paul & The Broken Bones have been on a mission to show a classy style of music can still get the party going.

Usually rooted deep in soul and funk, the band decided to show some flair with disco sounds and sonic samples. The third track “GotItBad” will

remind listeners of their favorite ‘70s hits. The song also shows off lead singer Paul Janeway’s fantastic falsetto.

“Apollo,” the first single released from the album, has a slight pop style to it that many fans disliked.

Some critics claimed the band was selling out like so many other artists have done. The band’s slight deviation from its core style lets it flex its ability to have fun with its craft.

“Convex,” perhaps the best song, shows just how hard the band can groove.

With the horn section blasting away, it is hard not to bob your head and move your feet. St. Paul & The Broken Bones brought in big-time R&B and hip-hop

producer Jack Splash, and it shows on tracks such as “Mr. Invisible.”

This album has a more inward approach to it than the band’s second album “Sea of Noise.” That album touched on some societal issues, but this latest piece of work has more to do with subjects that include family legacy, morality, home states and more. The camellia is Alabama’s state flower. There are a few interludes in this album, all featuring Janeway’s grandfather. They might seem like quirky audio snips the band added to be funny, but they are the backbone of this album.

Review: ‘Kin’ combines too many genres, creates confusion j e t t ur n er staff reporter @ o c olly

“Kin” is a science fiction film, an action movie, a crime thriller and a family drama, creating confusion about what the writers want the movie to be.

Based on the short film “The Bag Man,” “Kin” follows Jimmy, an ex-convict (Jack Reynor) and his adopted brother Eli (Myles Truitt). Things take a turn for the worse when vengeful criminals chase them. Taylor (James Franco) and a group of alien soldiers try to acquire a mysterious weapon Eli finds in

an abandoned building.

“Kin” is by no means a bad movie, but it suffers from an identity crisis at several points as it struggles to find a balance among its genres. The movie would have been better if writers had focused on one genre instead of trying to incorporate several into one movie.

The main plot device of the story, the alien weapon, is not showcased often. It serves to create a twist at the end but is unnecessary. If the movie was a crime thriller, it would have been much more consistent and easier to follow.

What does the movie a disservice is not the confusion in genre but the way screenwriter Daniel Casey portrays the characters as one-dimensional. This forces the actors to milk every scene for emotion that isn’t given to them in the first place.

If the writing was more thoughtful and emotional, the actors’ performances would be even more spectacular.

Casey’s writing and his jumps among genres make the movie almost silly when it changes from intense science fiction action to touchy

family moments. It delivers humor that does not serve as comic relief but instead disrupts the flow of the movie.

“Kin” is not necessarily for fans of science fiction because it lacks much of the genre, though it was heavily advertised as sci-fi. If moviegoers are looking for a film with a unique mix of genres and an interesting twist, this could be for them.
