At the corner of Hester and University sits the newly completed McKnight Center, a cultural and architectural feat entirely unachievable without the donations of devoted Oklahoma State alumni.

OSU donor Anne Greenwood has been waiting for the grand opening of The McKnight Center for almost six years.

“It’s like Christmas Eve,” Greenwood said.

“I fully expect to cry through everything.”

The 93,000-squarefoot theater boasts professionally designed acoustics, making each of the 1,098 seats the best seat in the house.

Staggering glass windows complement the classic “modified Georgian” architecture mirrored across campus, and a 32-foot outdoor video board allows students and citizens to enjoy the musical arts regardless of whether they can afford to attend.

The construction of this state-of-the-art theater would not have been feasible without a $25 million donation from Ross and Billie McKnight, the venue’s namesakes.

“We both have a passion for music,” Billie McKnight said. “We wanted to share that by fulfilling the vision

of the performing arts center and expanding the number and type of cultural opportunities available at Oklahoma State through worldclass performances and educational experiences.

It was all about a vision that would provide wonderful opportunities for Oklahoma and OSU.” Ross and Billie McKnight met on campus in 1971 when Ross judged the Freshman Queen contest. Although Billie did not win the competition, it was the first step in the rest of their lives, much of which have been colored by a deep passion for OSU. The pair co-chaired OSU’s Branding Success campaign that raised $1.2 billon for the university, and the McKnights have remained extremely involved in the development of campus.

“Oklahoma State University has been a central theme in our life’s story, so it’s very meaningful to be able to give back in the way that we are,” Ross McKnight said.

The McKnights’ donation along with a $15 million contribution from Frank and Carol Morsani and additional donations are ultimately what turned the dream of a world-class performing arts center in Stillwater into a reality.

Saturday marks the grand opening of The McKnight Center, and to match the prestige surrounding its opening, the inaugural performance will be none other than the New York Philharmonic.

“They’re really coming,” Greenwood said.

“And not only that, but they’re giving back to our college students, our

elementary students.”

In conjunction with the inaugural performance, The New York Philharmonic will host masterclass workshops for talented music students and will perform a show exclusively for Stillwater’s first and second graders. Both events are intended to invest back in the youth and inspire a passionate pursuit of music in their lives.

Ross McKnight spoke on the future cultural implications of The McKnight Center on Stillwater, OSU and its students.

“It is exciting to see how The McKnight Center will enable students at Oklahoma State to achieve their fullest potential by interacting and learning from some of the finest artists in the world,” Ross McKnight said. “It will serve as a stage for global talent and will bring OSU students unique, culturally enriching opportunities and will provide enjoyment for many generations of Oklahoma citizens and Oklahoma State supporters.”

The donors that funded this dream are not only financially invested in OSU. Just like the McKnights, the Greenwoods met on campus and are committed to making a tangible difference in the lives of their student successors in Stillwater.

able to me to have been a part of this five or six years ago in its infancy,” Greenwood said. “(T. Boone Pickens) made us not afraid to dream big.”

After Pickens’ death in September, donors such as the Greenwoods have come forward to speak about the impact Pickens had in their lives and how he inspired them to donate. Boone Pickens Stadium, Greenwood Tennis Center and The McKnight Center are recent results of the push to invest back in OSU. The dream for the arts does not end with The McKnight Center. The Greenwood School of Music is set to open in January 2021, providing an educational complement to The McKnight Center’s performance venue component.

“What we do is step up when we’re pretty sure nothing will happen if we don’t step up,” Greenwood said. “We stepped up with the hope that others would join.”

The initiative of donors has paid off, and the long-awaited grand opening of the McKnight Center is proof.

Like Ross and Billie McKnight and many other donors, Anne Greenwood is ecstatic to finally hear the New York Philharmonic perform in the McKnight Center.

“This night of celebration and arts,” Greenwood said, “it’s truly a dream come true.”

Three years after workers broke ground for construction, The McKnight Center for the Performing Arts has opened and is ready to host the New York Philharmonic.

Mark Blakeman, the Marilynn and Carl Thoma Executive Director for the McKnight Center, said he is thrilled to see the building finally open.

“I think it speaks volumes about OSU’s commitment to the arts and how central President Hargis feels it is to the brand and mission of the university,” Blake-

man said. “Great art and cultural offerings are an essential part of good higher education, and we just want to be able to impact as many people as possible and, of course, shine a very bright light on OSU in the process.”

The McKnight Center will host a variety of acts in its first season, from the New York Philharmonic’s performances to musicals and jazz bands.

The venue is also a space where OSU students will make music.

“Starting this fall, all of the large ensembles for the Greenwood School of Music will be doing their performances at the McKnight Center,”

Blakeman said. “So we are not delaying at all in the opportunity for OSU students to be doing their dress rehearsals and their performances at the McKnight Center. Student recitals and faculty recitals will happen in our recital hall starting this fall.”

Not only does the McKnight Center plan to host performances by OSU students, Blakeman said they are inviting visiting artists to take part in teaching moments for students. This is not just for OSU students, but also for the students of Stillwater, Cushing and Perkins schools.

Prior to the official

ribbon-cutting ceremony, the McKnight Center hosted a soft opening.

Jeffrey Loeffert, the Director for the Greenwood School of Music, said the soft opening was an idea Mark Blakeman came up with as a way to thank the builders and test the facilities.

“The concert is really for the construction workers and their families, all the people who made this building a physical reality,” he said. “I think it’s really cool, and also it’s a chance for us to feature a really large cross section of our students here at Oklahoma State. I’m so excited about that.”

Director of the Concert Chorale and Chamber Choir for Oklahoma State, said he directed the choir during the soft opening performance and was impressed by the quality of the facility.

“It enhanced the sound, but it wasn’t like overwhelming to where it’s a bit much,” Stroope said.

“It seemed to be just a nice big full sound, so we thought that it was really accepting of that. It also managed the soft sounds well, so I think they really hit a home run.”

The official opening was the ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 28. Mark Blakeman said there was an attendance

of over 400 and the community support for the center keeps growing.

“The community’s response to the center has really just been overwhelming,” he said.

“There’s so much enthusiasm for what it is that we’re doing. So much incredible support for the arts through the McKnight Center and certainly the university is excited to see how the center can really shine a light on OSU for all of its cultural offerings.”

The McKnight Center will host the New York Philharmonic October 11, 12 and 13 as the first official ticketed shows of the season.

Tucker Wilson was honored to learn he was offered a job at The McKnight Center for the Performing Arts.

The McKnight Center has already established itself as a powerhouse in performing arts centers, with nearly 35 percent of its shows in its opening season sold out before its first performance Friday.

Yet The McKnight Center would not be able to run without the help of the students from across the street.

Before its opening, The McKnight Center reached

out to students in the Michael and Anne Greenwood School of Music to offer hired positions. Not everyone hired is a music major, but nearly all participate in a music ensemble in some way.

Wilson, a business management junior, said he knows his position as a floor manager is going to help his career path.

“I think this job helps my major in a very positive way,” Wilson said. “It looks good on a resume, and as I am a management major, it helps me train for my future career.”

However, this job is significant for students majoring in music.

an emergency in the audience, how that should be handled appropriately, or if there are audience members who are maybe being disruptive, I’ll know how to handle that.

“The McKnight Center is obviously going to be a very professional environment, and as a future band director, I want my performances to be as close to professional as they can possibly be.”

The students are aware of the importance of their jobs, and without The McKnight Center, they would not have these opportunities.

“I feel like (students) are very important, but even more so, The McKnight

Center is more important to the students,” Wilson said.

“Because the McKnight Center could get older adults that would happily do the job, but most of the students that work here are music majors. So, they get to see how everything works behind the scenes, and kind of just see how it all may work.”

Student workers such as Wilson and Householder recognize that they are valued at The McKnight Center.

“I think almost all of the usher staff is Oklahoma State students,” Householder said. “The McKnight Center could not do what it is doing without the student support.”

Missed phone calls from unknown numbers usually don’t result in anything of consequence for Kenny Gajewski.

This one, however, was more than a regular voicemail.

It was the beginning of his latest ace transfer’s journey to Stillwater.

While in the midst of a 2019 postseason run in which the Oklahoma State softball team reached the Women’s College World Series, Gajewski received a call from a former travel ball coach of a player at another school. Gajewski, as usual, let it go straight to voicemail.

After taking the time

to listen to the voicemail, Gajewski knew he might have found an ace for his 2020 pitching staff.

This time, it was Virginia Tech senior and 2019 ACC Pitcher of the Year, Carrie Eberle.

Less than a month after the voicemail, Gajewski contacted Eberle and invited her to visit Stillwater. On June 30, she officially announced her transfer to the Cowgirls.

“When I came on my visit here, I kind of just knew,” Eberle said. “You just get the feeling that this could be your new home.”

Eberle earned ACC Pitcher of the Year honors after pitching 201.1 innings with 164 strikeouts and a 1.84 ERA to lead Virginia Tech to its fourth regional appear-

Gajewski is no stranger to adding transfers to the Cowgirls. He has brought in more than 20 transfers during his tenure in Stillwater.

“I think it is important to know that a team is accepting and willing to take transfers,” Eberle said. “It’s a different dynamic in the culture.”

Eberle, whose parents are Virginia Tech graduates, grew up a Hokie fan and dreamed of one day going to her parents’ alma mater. She referred to the school as a “second home.”

Once she had accomplished her dream and graduated with a year of eligibility left, Eberle knew she had a tough decision to make.

“I graduated from

Virginia Tech, so I will always be an alumni, and I’ll always be a Hokie,” Eberle said. “I decided that I had done what I came (to Virginia Tech) to do, and I was ready for a fresh start. It was hard … we finally sat down as a family and went through all the pros and cons. There were a lot of cons to transferring, but at the end of the day if one of your pros is that you aren’t happy, then that kind of outweighs everything else.”

A key factor in her decision was OSU’s prestigious biology program, a program she chose despite a long list of guarantees that came with doing graduate school at Virginia Tech.

“It was a big risk to take,” Eberle said. “I had

my grad school lined up at (Virginia) Tech. I knew what I was gonna get if I stayed at Tech. I was gonna be guaranteed innings and things like that.

It was a lot of unknown going into the transfer portal, so it had the be the risk I was willing to take, but at the end of the day it was gonna be worth it.”

Gajewski has had multiple success stories of pitchers and position players transferring in and having immense success at OSU. The most recent of those was Samantha Show, who transferred from Texas A&M before the 2019 season and led the Cowgirls to the WCWS while setting the school record for home runs in a season.

After visiting Stillwater and talking to Show, Eberle said she had a complete grasp of the Cowgirl “family.”

“I think what’s really key is how close everyone is,” Eberle said. “It really is a family here.

They care about you more than just a player, they care about you as a person, which you don’t always get everywhere else.”

Through successfully recruiting transfers, Gajewski has learned about the factors that influence their decisions.

“When kids transfer as a senior, they’ve been through this,” Gajewski said. “I think older kids, it’s about fit, it’s about comfort, it’s about where can I grow.”

The Oklahoma State University theatre department saw a complete rebranding this year under the leadership of a new department head.

David Kersnar, department head of theatre, worked with several of the faculty committee members to come up with its slogan “You Belong in OSU Theatre” in an attempt to foster a better theatre community among students across campus.

The slogan acts as the department’s first initiative in a long-term plan to diversify the body of cast and crew as a whole, expand the program and open up the theatre department for students stemming from all majors.

Joining the university’s theatre department in June 2019, Kersnar hopes to recruit future students through talent scouts while also creating an atmosphere that further mirrors the diversity seen on-campus.

The new slogan, Kersnar states, leaves the “you” intentionally ambiguous to allow the reader to ponder upon their place in OSU theatre, whether it is the reader seeing themselves as an audience member, an actor or a stage manager.

“For me, if theatre is not reflective of the world around it,” Kersnar said.

“it’s not doing its job.”

After Kersnar’s hiring, the department started teasing and distributing its new branding in August on posters and buttons across campus before the new season of shows were announced.

Natalie Ambrose, director for OSU theatre’s first production in 2019, “Steel Magnolias,” said while the rebranding has not yet created a drastic change in the overall layout in the casting, both the rebranding and the slogan open the doors to the community.

“Our hope is that students can see themselves literally doing an art form that maybe they had experienced in high school,” Ambrose said. “and realize that they are good at it and that they can work in the industry in lots of ways in life.”

The rebranding remained consistent even throughout the promotional aspects of the department. This year, to keep opening the doors to non-theatre majors in the university, the department chose to use non-theatre majors to model for their promotional posters for each of the productions.

“The posters were another way to show that we’re being inclusive and that you can participate in theatre as a major, minor, elective or an extracurricular activity,” Kersnar said.

“You belong however you want to belong.”

The department’s intense rebranding campaign caused its presence on campus to be as noteworthy as ever. With ads placed in the library and on campus grounds as well as plans to go to recruitment events in places such as the Oklahoma State Thespian Festival in early 2020, the department will not stop until the participants better reflect the state.

“If you look at the demographics for our state, we aren’t mirroring that,” Kersnar said. “How can we say that you belong in OSU theatre if you don’t see yourself here.”

Olivia Smith, a freshman computer science major, participated in OSU theatre this year as an understudy for the play “Steel Magnolias.” She said she felted welcomed by the university’s theatre department, even as a nontheatre major.

Students such as Smith are the type of participates OSU theatre hopes to recruit more within the next few years. The department wants everyone to know that people of all different backgrounds deserve a place in OSU theatre, especially if they have any interest in the art form.

“I enjoy doing different acting exercises and getting to know the character,” Smith said. “Getting to perform with other people is a lot of fun.”
