It’s a historic decision that no one saw some coming.

So who’s getting paid?

While we’re at it, who at Oklahoma State’s getting paid? A lot of this will be figured out over the next few years, but the gates have been open.

The debate has raged on for a long time.

Should student-athletes be paid or not? On one side, some think student-athletes have been over-worked while the NCAA builds a hefty bank account.

And others say paying those athletes would cause corruption and potentially ruin college sports. It was a neverending discussion that engulfed America in emotions.

Then it all became moot when the NCAA made a shocking choice to allow studentathletes to benefit off their name, image and likeness. It shocked the country. The fight was over. The studentathletes who had been held back for so long were finally able to get the money many people thought they deserved.

The NCAA’s ruling that allows student-athletes to benefit off their likeness opens the path for all three divisions to create rules to address the matter. It’s not the full thing yet, but it’s a step in the right direction. A step toward equal compensation for student-athletes.

But is it actually equal? How much are these student-athletes going to benefit from the ruling?

“Well, are we comfortable with that? Because all that is is buying players.”

It could cause a discord that takes away from the culture that is college sports. There isn’t a price that can be put on the passion athletes put into the game.

Most aren’t playing for a paycheck, but rather for the love of the game.

FS1 basketball analyst and former OSU basketball player Doug Gottlieb said that was the best part of it all.

“I’ve played sports for a paycheck,” Gottlieb said. “And it’s cool, it’s fine, I’ve won a championship in Russia and gotten a $50,000 cash bonus. It was awesome, it was cool. But you know what, it wasn’t really an emotional experience. There wasn’t any connection to it. It wasn’t the connection to playing in college with guys you live around and guys you train with and at that time in your life, that’s what you need.”

OSU football coach Mike Gundy has similar concerns as Leach.

Gundy said. “Are there limits? Can Nike help Oregon? Can Under Armour help Maryland?”

College sports are great because of that.

The upsets, the celebrations, the madness, it all stems from the purity of the game.

If that’s taken away, what happens?

“If money begins to get involved in it, what direction is this going to go?’ Gundy said. “It scares me. So whoever finds the best name and likeness deal, is that where all the best players go? That’s not good for college football.”

The name, image and likeness approach could potentially to tear away at the fabric of what makes college sports special.

It’s a delicate balance between what’s right and what people want.

The other side of the argument is that the few student-athletes who deserve to get paid, make college sports what it is, and they deserve to be compensated.

It’s a fair argument, but it’s fair to question if the little money they would make is enough to offset the potential issues.

In a large football program such as OSU’s, how many local Stillwater businesses would hand out big deals to these players?

California passed the bill allowing studentathletes to profit off their name, image and likeness. It left the NCAA perplexed. Something was going to change.

But most people thought it would end with the NCAA trying to sue California over the bill.

The NCAA then shocked the country.

Instead of rebelling, it voted to allow studentathletes to benefit off their likeness.

Except it didn’t.

The NCAA’s ruling opened the gates for the three divisions to create rules to allow studentathletes to benefit off their name, image and likeness. It has several principles and guidelines for the division to follow that preach fairness, but there’s one line that sticks out. The divisions must create rules “in a manner consistent with the collegiate model.”

What does that mean?

That’s open the interpretation. Sports law expert Peter Goplerud said it’s the way the NCAA will try to maintain amateurism.

It’s a slippery slope because it brings up the question: how do student-athletes get paid without violating the core beliefs of amateurism?

Here’s one solution: many people believe the “Olympic model” is the best way to go about it.

The Olympic model would allow studentathletes to benefit off their name, image and likeness without direct compensation. In the Olympic model, the money that’s acquired would be put into a trust fund and couldn’t be used until the student

graduates and/or heads to the pros.

“The Olympic model seems to be the one that is best,” ESPN college basketball analyst Fraschilla said. “That is to allow the athlete to accrue money for his talent, to do endorsements, the use of image and likeness. And to put it in escrow for when he leaves college so we can maintain some sense of amateurism. Amateurism is a very malleable term these days when it comes to college sports.”

People who are against paying student-athletes don’t have a problem

with the money, as much as the effects. It’s not that they don’t want student-athletes to be compensated, it’s the complications it would cause.

Fraschilla said paying student-athletes directly would cause issues that the Olympic model could solve.

“There are so many unanswered questions regarding who will supervise this and coordinate this on each campus,” Fraschilla said. “Are the student-athletes going to be taxed? Are they going to have workmen’s compensation? I think

this is all very confusing. I think the Olympic model is the simplest way that student-athletes can benefit from their talent and yet the NCAA can maintain some form of amateurism.”

Implementing the Olympic model is a simple fix, but it’s one that could ease the worries of many.

“I think that’s the best model right now,” Fraschilla said. “And I’m not an expert in this area but I think the NCAA will bend dramatically in the direction of allowing elite student-athletes to benefit.”

Should student-athletes be paid? The NCAA began to answer that.

Beyond athletes in football and men’s basketball - the sports offering the most opportunity for student-athletes getting paid - who else benefits? Some sports would simply like to catch up in regards to scholarship aid.

The Oklahoma State baseball team receives 11.7 scholarships to spread over 35 players.

That isn’t distributed equally either, as some players are left without aid.

Coach Josh Holliday said he isn’t worried

about his players being paid, but he does believe they should all be given full scholarships.

“I think before we get to the point of saying, we should pay college athletes in addition to scholarships, we would first, in the sport of baseball, first get them a scholarship,” Holliday said.

Holliday said getting players a scholarship would help kids get on the right track.

“I think if you can pay for a kid’s education in the sport of baseball as well as provide his room and board, that’s an awfully strong commitment and I think it would be a great place to start in the sport of baseball,” Holliday said.

Baseball, like most men’s college sports, does not get full scholarships for their roster. They work just as hard as football or basketball players. They practice just as hard.

They put in similar hours working, training, traveling, but still, they don’t receive the same recognition.

One might think allowing student-athletes to benefit off their name, image and likeness would solve the problem, but Holliday said it wouldn’t do too much.

“If you’re 18 years old and a freshman playing baseball, then you would have been a high draft choice and choose to go to college,” Holliday said.

“I don’t know that an

apparel company needs you yet from a market and endorsement standpoint because your return for their company is years away.”

Unlike basketball, where kids are all over Instagram dunking from 14 years old, baseball simply doesn’t have the same market. This is partly due to the fact that baseball players, even once they’re draft, are often regulated to the minor leagues.

“In those sports, because the athletes don’t go to the minor leagues, their marketability and value, and the market might be more mature whereas a baseball player’s marketability and his impact on the consumer is still a few years away cause people

don’t know him quite as well yet,” Holliday said.

The struggles that college baseball players face are bigger than people realize. It’s not about getting a few extra bucks, it’s about equality amongst student-athletes.

“If we’re not even at full scholarships or equal scholarships to get to the point of paying them in baseball would be a huge jump,” Holliday said. “I don’t think we’re ready to jump that far.”

David Boren has all but disappeared from the University of Oklahoma.

And while his presence hasn’t been as prominent at Oklahoma State, one alumnus of nearly 40 years is pushing for Boren’s influence to be wiped clean from this campus, too.

Charles R. Freeman, who was named the 2019 Oklahoma Veterinarian of the Year, proposed the idea of de-naming the Boren Veterinary Medical Hospital, writing in a letter to the Veterinary Medicine alumni society members that the building’s name is “an embar-

rassment to our university.”

“For years and years many of the alumni, myself included, have wondered why did (Boren’s) name ever end up on that building,” Freeman said.

Freeman also wrote several reasons for the de-naming of the building, including “the removal of David Boren’s status as emeritus President of the University of Oklahoma and the other actions by (OU) to disassociate themselves from their previous president and the relinquishment of his affiliations with the university.”

Freeman said there are other instructors and professors at the university who are more deserv-

ing of having a building named after them. “(Boren) doesn’t honor any of the people that have had to do with veterinary education in Oklahoma,” Freeman said.

The building was named after Boren in the ‘70s while he was the Governor of Oklahoma.

Boren helped set aside funds for the building in the state’s legislature.

OU’s disassociation from Boren came after a sexual harassment investigation by the university, which began in February and ended in April, after allegations of misconduct arose.

The investigation sought to determine whether Boren sexu-

ally harassed male aides during his 23-year tenure as president at OU. The Board of Regents at OU announced in April they had received the results of the investigation, although those results have not been made public.

After Boren resigned as President at OU, his successor, Jim Gallogly, said months after taking office he found OU was nearly $1 billion in debt.

Jerry Malayer, associate dean of the School of Veterinary Medicine, said this call for a name change is “not new.”

“There have been people who have complained about the name of that since the building was built because of the connection of Mr. Boren

and his family to the University of Oklahoma,” Malayer said. “Recent events have changed some things, perhaps, but my personal view is we need to let that play out.”

However, according to Faculty Council Chairman Udaya DeSilva, not a single faculty member or student has complained to the faculty council about the name of the building, which is when the board will start to consider enacting the de-naming process.

“It has to come from a majority of the faculty that want it done, and then we’ll start working on it, if that’s the case,” DeSilva said. “But absolutely we have not had a single request from

faculty, so we are not. It’s not even on the agenda at any point that we are considering that.”

College of Veterinary Medicine Dean Carlos Risco and Provost Gary Sandefur both said they were unaware of any push to de-name the hospital.

If a move to de-name the building does gain traction at some point, Malayer said any resulting process would require careful consideration.

“We need to be thoughtful and fair and reasoned about it, as opposed to jumping to conclusions and making judgements based on politics or whatever the point of view is,” Malayer said.

Friendships don’t matter when you step on the mat.

The Oklahoma State wrestling team will compete in its first event of the season at the OCU open tournament this weekend, which OSU won in nine of the ten weight classes last season.

OSU is often one of the only Division I schools competing in the event, which leads to several head-to-head matchups between Cowboy wrestlers. But don’t expect them to let up just because they are teammates.

Travis Wittlake is no

stranger to facing his friends on the mat and he doesn’t let it affect his performance.

“On the mat it’s different,” Wittlake said, “Even though it is your teammate, it is your friend, on the mat it’s business.”

This tournament could also help coach John Smith determine who will start in the Cowboys’ opening duals next weekend against Drexel and Lehigh.

“We’ve got a few weights we have to decide on,” Smith said, “We have three spots (133, 197 and heavyweight) where, in August, we felt like we were in pretty good shape and come September 1 we weren’t.”

OSU returns several starters from last season, but there are also a few weights where the starter hasn’t yet been determined.

“We’ve got some good

people,” Smith said, “They have an opportunity that maybe they didn’t think they had in August and all of a sudden, here we are.”

At 184, All-American

Dakota Geer and freshman Anthony Montalvo are competing for the spot. The winner is likely in a good position to place nationally.

“Whoever is at (184) is going to be one of the best guys in the country, ” Montalvo said, “It makes the team better overall to have that competition.”

Despite Geer being an All-American, Montalvo doesn’t expect to make it easy on him.

“I push him every time,” Montalvo said, “I wouldn’t be doing Geer any justice if I went in every day and folded” Coach Smith also has decisions to make at 197 and 285, where gradu-

“It’s good competition,” Smith said, “At the end of the day, only one guy gets their hand raised.”

The Cowgirls pulled out a victory against Idaho in their season opener on Tuesday, but it didn’t come easily.

The Cowgirls won 62-47 against an underrated Vandals team that finished with a 22-12 record last season.

“I just didn’t think we shot the ball with confidence,” Littell said.

“And when you shoot the ball you got to have the idea that it’s going in every time. I felt like a few of our players were very apprehensive when they shot the ball.

OSU forward Vivian Gray had a rough game as she went 3-for-15 from the floor. Littell said he’s confident that Gray will bounce back.

“I’m not worried about Vivian Gray,” Littell said. “She’s a good player. She didn’t make some shots. Vivian Gray is not a worry for me at all.”

Despite the offensive struggles, OSU limited the Vandals to only 47 points on 27.3 percent shooting.

OSU’s defense was disruptive on Tuesday.

Littell said the Cowgirls had 37 deflections against the Vandals.

Deflections are a statistic that people don’t always measure, but it speaks volumes about a team’s defensive intensity. OSU’s high deflection mark was a testament to how well it played defensively.

Littell said he loved the defensive effort, and he was also happy the turnovers stayed relatively low.

The Cowgirls had 25 turnovers in their exhibition game against Emporia State, but only

seven against Idaho.

Littell said that was one of the bright spots for the Cowgirls.

OSU’s disappointing offensive output had a lot to do with its perimeter shooting. Littell said he hopes his players can fill that hole.

“We had some players that were not guarded and they got to accept the challenge of when somebody doesn’t guard me I got to step up and be held accountable and make shots,” Litell said.

OSU can go into its next game against

Lamar with one thing hanging over its head: defense. But Littell said the Cowgirls need to shoot better going forward.

The Lady Cardinals present another strong test for the Cowgirls, but Littell is only worried about his own team, not the opponents they play.

“We’re going to go into this game under the approach that it’s more about us and taking care of the business that we need to care of,” Littell said.

Zombieland Double Tap: Long-awaited sequel lives up to expectations Mad die Wel l s

Despite concerns about “Zombieland Double Tap” not living up to the original, it surprised and impressed in theatres this fall.

“Zombieland Double Tap” brought the audience back to the postapocalyptic world, but this time, several years have passed since the zombies first showed up. ZDT is a comedy horror film that was remade 10 years after the original.

Director Ruben Fleischer’s first feature film was the successful “Zombieland.” He had high hopes for the sequel and was excited to get the original cast back together.

After “Zombieland,” Fleischer included some of the cast members in movies he has created as good luck charms. Woody Harrelson had a cameo in “Venom,” Emma Stone was featured in “Gangster Squad” and Jesse Eisenberg starred in “30 Minutes or Less.”

ZDT brought back the great qualities of the original while also introducing new elements. There are new actors, new jokes, new types of zombies and new locations.

The one hour and

39-minute film begins with the original four characters, Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock participating in day to day life. They set up new residence in the White House. One day, Wichita and Little Rock leave unexpectedly leaving Columbus and Tallahassee blindsided. The plot starts to thicken as the audience meets new characters like Madison (Zoey Deutch), Berkeley (Avan Jogia), Albuquerque (Like Wilson) and many others.

Creatively enough, this movie includes the types of zombies found in “Zombieland”. The zombies were named based upon their characteristics. For example, “the Homers,” which are the dumb ones, refers to Homer Simpson from the Simpsons.

“The Hawking’s,” named after Stephen Hawking, are the more intelligent zombies.

“The ninjas” are sneaky and attack out of nowhere. Finally, there is the T-800 which is the newest evolved zombie. It is named after the Terminator because they are a much more dangerous breed of zombie.

The references offers a fun fourth wall break.

hype. It will keep the viewer engaged the whole time. There are so many twists throughout the length of the movie; it goes by in a flash.

Also, make sure to stay during the credits for a wonderful surprise.

The film’s soundtrack features pretty much all older songs, which for me was a huge bonus.

I knew most of the songs and it made the movie more enjoyable.

It has songs such as “Hound Dog” originally by Elvis Presley, but sung in the film by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, “Free Bird” by Lynyrd Skynyrd, “Like a Rolling Stone” by Bob Dylan and many others. The soundtrack gives the audience enjoyable and easy to listen to music to add to this wonderful music experience.

This movie has great characters, an engaging plot, it is hilarious, includes great music and will leave viewers upset to leave.

If you want to continue your “spooky season” or want a good laugh, “Zombieland Double Tap” needs to be what you watch on your next trip to the movies.
