Fans will file into Gallagher-Iba Arena to experience “America’s Greatest Homecoming Celebration” and basketball Friday night.

Homecoming and Hoops will take place in Gallagher-Iba Arena at 9 p.m. Friday after Homecoming Walkaround.

“I love the energy of homecoming,” said Ashton Copeland, a sophomore elementary education major. “It makes me happy to see everyone come together showing their school pride.”

alumnus and professional golfer, is expected to attend Homecoming and Hoops and will serve as the grand marshal in the Sea of Orange Parade on Saturday morning.

Spirit awards winners will be announced for homecoming competitions such as the chili cook-off and the residential life decoration contest.

One award the Greek community anticipates every year is the Library Lawn sign competition.

Caili Jester, a senior therapeutic recreation student, said she can’t wait to see how her sorority, Kappa Alpha Theta, places in the award ceremony.

“We worked hard this homecoming, and I am hoping we win something this year,” Jester said.

Grant Eads, a senior economics major, said he wants his last Homecoming and Hoops as an OSU student to be his favorite.

“Homecoming and Hoops is one of my favorite homecoming traditions because there’s something for everybody, from sports fans to Greek life (members),” Eads said.

Homecoming and Hoops has something in store for sports fans, as they will witness OSU’s men’s basketball teams scrimmage each other.

The women’s team will

also scrimmage.

“It will be nice to see how the basketball team will play with a new coach, even though the scrimmage probably won’t be competitive,” said Baxter Bradford, a junior chemical engineering student.

Each year, Homecoming and Hoops offers a special event or feature for fans to enjoy. In 2013, OSU showed off GallagherIba Arena’s 3-D court projection. In 2016, guests watched Cowboy wrestling coach John Smith face Kenny Gajewski, OSU’s softball coach, in a wrestling match.

This year, the men’s

basketball team will debut its new jerseys. The Cowboys offered a preview of the uniforms with closeup pictures on Instagram, but it won’t reveal the full look of the jerseys until Homecoming and Hoops.

OSU’s cheerleaders and pom squad will play a part in Homecoming and Hoops, and the homecoming royalty candidates are also involved. OSU homecoming courts are often introduced in creative ways, such as a Disney skit in 2016.

Many freshmen will experience Homecoming and Hoops for the first time Friday. Cassandra Irvine, a freshman market-

ing major, said she can’t wait to see what’s in store.

“I heard a lot of great things about it from upperclassmen,” Irvine said, “From what I gathered, it’s a giant pep rally for the school.”

Pomp it up: fraternity, sorority members participate in all-night pomping Lauryl Bennington and Peri McKinnis Staff Reporters

Pomping is a tedious process that starts with small pieces of tissue paper, but it has huge results.

Each year at Oklahoma State University, thousands of people from all over the country come to see large artistic displays in front of fraternity houses on Greek Row at Homecoming Walkaround.

In preparation for Walkaround on Friday, the traditional all-night pomp took place from Thursday through Friday.

For 24 hours, the men and women in Greek Life took 12-hour shifts to complete

the pomping. Sororities are paired with fraternities and have worked together for weeks to make progress on their artwork.

The theme for homecoming this year is “Herald Your Fame,” and the pomp theme, “Stillwater is the Eighth Wonder of the World,” reflects the ideas of celebrity and prominence. Fraternities and sororities have planned their designs, and it all leads up to this moment.

Caroline Sallee, an OSU junior and member of Alpha Delta Pi, described pomping as “tiring” and explained the process.

“Pomping is when you get pieces of tissue paper,

layer them together, then get a pencil and stick it all through chicken wire,” Sallee said.

This year, ADPi is paired with the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity for pomping.

Fraternities and sororities carefully plan their pomping designs, and support for the artwork is important to them, too.

Some fraternity members are in charge of welding the arcs that hold up hundreds of pounds of chicken wire and tissue paper.

Connor Begansky, a sophomore member of FarmHouse fraternity, said welding and pomping are

different but both require work.

“There is a lot of effort going in on the pomping side since that is what is actually displayed, but in the background you have a lot of the guys outside welding,” Begansky said.

“It’s the best of both worlds.”

The Greek community at OSU is serious about pomping, and fraternity and sorority members know they have to make some sacrifices to get the work done. If students don’t complete their pomping hours each week, their fraternities and sororities can require them to pay fines. Begansky said he

has paid the fines before to have time to keep up with his coursework.

Although pomping is hard work, it brings members of Greek houses together.

Katie Steen, an OSU junior and a director of Sigma Phi Lambda, explained how important homecoming is to her.

“I love homecoming and this time of year,” Steen said. “It’s just nice to walk around and see how the community comes and works together on this humongous project.”

Because Steen is a director, her homecoming duties differ from those of the other girls in her soror-

ity. She does not pomp as often as the other women, but she is responsible for ensuring everything is in order. Steen said interacting with fellow sorority members and seeing them come together makes it worth the effort.

Groups of students pomp for grueling 12-hour shifts, but they enjoy pizza and energy drinks as they soak in loads of time with their friends.

Students and alumni of OSU will see the fraternities’ and sororities’ completed works at Homecoming Walkaround, which starts at 5:30 p.m. Friday on OSU’s campus.

Story By Beth Theis Oklahoma State University is home to several alumni whose names have become known to millions around the world, but there is one Cowboy in particular who has allowed his pride for America’s Brightest Orange to shine especially bright.

Rickie Fowler, California native and PGA professional golfer, is known for making a statement on the golf course. Not just by his amazing athletic ability but also by his bright orange apparel at every tournament in which he plays.

When Fowler arrived in Stillwater, he said he felt at home on campus and with the people. And he, like every other Cowboy, is quite fond of Homecoming.

“Nobody does Homecoming like Cowboys do,” said Fowler. “When I was a student here, I remember how awesome it was that thousands of alumni came back every year. Since I left, I have come ‘home’ a few times, and each time I remember why I am a Cowboy.”

As grand marshal, Fowler will take part in several Homecoming events including the Sea of Orange Parade at 9 a.m. Saturday and the Cowboy Corral Pep Rally at noon in the OSU Alumni Center.

ENDOW Homecoming The Homecoming and Student Programs Endowment is meant to help ease the financial burden placed on OSU student groups during Homecoming. Alumni and friends are invited to join students like those in the Interfraternity Council and the Panhellenic Council, who voluntarily increased their membership dues $5 to support the endowment. The O’Colly talked to Nathan Keil, sports editor of the Baylor Lariat, Baylor’s student newspaper. Keil answered five questions about Baylor to give an insight before the Bears play Oklahoma State at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Stillwater.

Q: Unlike usual, Baylor doesn’t really have any known weapons on offense this season. Who are some standouts on the Bears’ offense that could possibly have a big game against Oklahoma State?

A: Quarterback Zach Smith isn’t quite the seasoned veteran under center that the Bears have had the last two season in Seth Russell, but Smith continues to gain more confidence in the offense, and despite losing to both Oklahoma and Kansas State, he has shown he has a big arm and is capable of racking up big numbers. His favorite target has been wide receiver Denzel Mims, who has stepped up and filled the shoes of No. 1 receiver since Chris Platt went down with an injury.
