Lindy Waters III stood at center court and draped a thick blanket over coach Mike Boynton’s shoulders, drawing applause from the fans who stayed in Gallagher-Iba Arena after the game.

Waters, a senior on the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team, led the Cowboys to defeat Yale 64-57 on Sunday afternoon.

Then he and his family honored the people who have influenced and inspired him at OSU. Waters, who has Kiowa and Cherokee heritage, presented gifts to 16 individuals

during an Honoring and Giveaway ceremony.

Earlier in the week, Waters explained the tradition’s significance.

“In my culture, something that we do very often is a Giveaway,” Waters said.

“It’s where I pick people that have helped me along the way in my path, whether that’s coaching staff or people at the university, and I give things of significance to me away for them. Some cultures, they literally give every possession that they have away, and in return, the community gives back to what they need.”

in the middle of Eddie Sutton Court, where he thanked them with items such as colorful blankets and intricate works of art. He recognized prominent OSU figures including president Burns Hargis and Ann Hargis, athletic director Mike Holder and chief of police Leon Jones.

Waters also had gifts for coaches and others integral to the Cowboy basketball program, ranging from athletic trainer Kevin Blaske to graduate assistant Brad Lewis.

Boynton, Waters’ coach since his sophomore season, received the Circle of Life blanket, which Waters said is the blanket of

highest honor.

“It’s really kind of what you get into coaching for, is to have such an impact on a kid’s life that he feels like he wants to do something like that for you,” Boynton said.

“Shy of getting emotional, it means a big deal to me and probably one of the highlights of my coaching career at this point.”

The ceremony concluded the events for OSU’s Nike N7 game, a celebration of Native American Heritage Month. The Cowboys sported vivid turquoise uniforms, and Native American performers sang and danced at halftime.

game, Waters finished with a game-high 19 points, and he lifted OSU (4-0) out of a tricky situation in the second half.

The Cowboys led by as many as 13 in the first half, but the Bulldogs (2-2) clawed back and repeatedly tied the game as OSU struggled with getting shots to fall after halftime.

The Cowboys were clinging to a 54-52 lead when Waters sank a 3-pointer from the right side with 2:17 left. After Yale’s Paul Atkinson made a layup, Waters responded with another 3, pumping energy into the crowd and putting OSU up 60-54.

With 29 seconds left, he hit a jump shot, add-

ing his last two points.

“My teammates put me in a great position,” Waters said. “Gave me great passes, set good screens, and me being ready to shoot, we practice that every single day.”

Despite Waters’ late heroics, he maintained the quiet humility that has characterized him throughout his OSU career. At the end of the Giveaway ceremony, he waved to the fans around him, letting the gifts speak for themselves.

“It meant a lot to me,” Waters said. “Every single person has a different role, and they all do their job to a T every single day.”

‘We’re not exclusive’: Native American organizations on campus hope to inform students L auryn Th om as S taf f Writ er @ o c olly

November is more than cooler weather, thanksgiving, and the precursor to finals; November is time to celebrate Native American Indian Heritage Month.

This month is a time to acknowledge diverse cultures, traditions and histories and express the important contributions of Native people.

The Native American Student Association, The Sovereign Nations, and Alpha Phi Omega Sorority are on campus organizations that embrace and encourage Native American Culture. These organizations desire to inform students about Native American Culture as well as invite everyone to their events.

Strategic communications senior Kendra Jump is a member of the Sovereign Nations and commented on the inclusivity of the organization.

“We’re not exclusive,” Jump said. “You don’t have to be Native to hang with us, we are an organization that wants to help all students.”

Events such as Sovereign Stance, beading workshops, Pow Wows, Mr. and Miss American Indian OSU and, most recently, the Native American Student Night highlight Native American culture as

well as bring a sense of community and to the Native students.

Art history sophomore Shane Swift is the Culture Team leader for SUAB. Swift spoke on his efforts to have diverse events.

“Events like these are meant to help promote better diversity and inclusion,” Swift said.

“Being half Native American, I’ve always noticed that it was a community that has been underrepresented on campus. Events like these show the importance of different cultures and bring a sense of inclusion and representation that everybody deserves.”

Psychology major Elizabeth Alexander is the chapter president of Alpha Phi Omega.

Alexander advocates for the importance of education.

“It’s important to educate and show that although we are adapting to today’s societies, but we are still holding on to our traditions as well” Alexander said.

“Even though we are a minority we are making a big impact and we want everyone to be a part of it.”

Biosystems senior Raegan McGuire is the president of the Native American Student Association presidents.

McGuire wishes students knew how accessible their organizations are.

“We want people to come and learn about our culture, when people learn about our culture they learn more about what the different tribes are and their traditions and get a better understanding of where natives are in today’s Oklahoma and today’s society.”

Jump also spoke on the importance of big universities putting on events like this is to bring awareness and create a sense of community and family for all types of students.

“If we limit ourselves to one culture [or] one concept, it keeps us buried in our own little bubble. Jump said.

“Being exposed to as many cultures as possible is truly a growth experience and it raises awareness of what natives go through and shows what a modern native is, what they do, and what they look like.”

Through different cultural organizations and events, people are able to learn about the importance of different cultures. Cultures that make the world diverse and unique and cultures that connect people together. Through experiencing and acknowledging the importance of different cultures, that is when the bubble can truly burst.

The Holy Spirit, who is given to every true believer, is called the counselor, the comforter. He knows perfectly how to make the things of God real to us. I have found it so in my own life, over and over again. This calling is for all followers of Christ. What a wondrous thing! He can “prepare a table before us even in the presence of our enemies.” (Ps.23:5) The truth of the scriptures become more than just written words. They speak real life, comfort and challenge. The reality of Christ is more than just a teaching from the Bible, but a personal way of life. We get to experience His presence!

‘What Were You Wearing’: 1 is 2 many’s exhibit dedicated to victims of sexual assault E s ther N ia n g S taff Wr it er @ G e n ZR ead s

Oklahoma State University’s 1 is 2 many is collaborating with Thrifty Butterfly Boutique and the Merchandising and Apparel Design Association to unveil their upcoming exhibit, “What Were You Wearing”.

“What Were You Wearing” features outfits that university students reported wearing during their sexual assault that have been repeated to raise awareness.

The goal is to show that one’s clothing does not imply consent.

Students can walk by and examine the anonymous excerpts beside the display of the clothing, journal and share their experiences for the 2020 exhibit. A symposium on Thursday the 21st at 5:12 pm at the Student Union French Lounge will feature student victims and survivors who will share their experiences and discuss more about the meaning of the exhibit.

The first “What Were You Wearing” exhibit originally started in the University of Arkansas and the clothing were sent to other universities for their own exhibits. 1 is 2 many was able to get the clothing and recreate them last year but this year, they are involving more OSU students to see how it impacts the student body on campus.

“Last year, we did an assessment of the program,” Pendleton said. “The feedback was great and [the students] were most impacted by seeing that a lot of the outfits were very conservative”.

A 1 is 2 many peer educator and Treasurer of the 1 is 2 many Student Advisory Board, Seraiah Coe, is one of the students behind the scenes of the exhibit. She and her peers plan interactive ideas, finding out which counselors will be helping during the discussion at the symposium. She also finds ways to educate the OSU campus on sensitive topics such as sexual assault.

“There is a lot of stigma when someone goes through a sexual assault,” Coe said. “I think a lot of

what this exhibit is here to tackle is the issue of victim blaming.”

Coe adds that she believes it is unique that OSU is getting the opportunity to do this exhibit.

“Not very many universities have this opportunity and it kind of highlights how progressive OSU is as far as addressing sexual assault and the assumptions behind it,” Coe said.

“For students that may have experienced this and they see other people up there sharing their stories, it’d hopefully make the students feel less alone and more like there is a community and resources to support them.”

The exhibit will be displayed from Nov. 18-22 on the second floor of the Student Union in the Campus Life Lounge.

Oklahoma State’s horse mascot has a new meaning to Les Miles.

When Miles coached the Cowboy football team, he eagerly anticipated the moments when Bullet would run across the turf while the band would play “Ride ‘em Cowboys” in celebration.

As announcer Larry Reece said “Here comes Bullet,” signaling the mascot’s arrival after each Cowboy touchdown Saturday, Miles had a different perspective of the tradition. For Miles, Kansas’ coach, the familiar presence of a horse served as a reminder that OSU was soundly defeating his team.

“I’m standing across the field,” Miles said.

“And I can see Bullet, and I can see him from the start to the finish. It’s not the same.”

The Cowboys dominated the Jayhawks 31-13 at Boone Pickens Stadium in their first meeting since Miles took his position at KU. With four touchdowns, OSU made sure Miles had chances to see Bullet on the field. Despite the Jayhawks’ loss, there were sweet moments for Miles, who coached the Cowboys from 2001 through 2004 before leaving for LSU. The game doubled

as a reunion among old friends.

“This is really a wonderful place,” Miles said.

It was also a homecoming for his children.

Two of Miles’ kids were born while he lived in Stillwater, and he and his wife, Kathy, raised their young family there.

His elder son, Manny, grew up playing with Mike Gundy’s sons when Gundy was Miles’ offensive coordinator.

OSU’s football program has evolved since Miles’ departure. The grandiose Boone Pickens Stadium is complete, creating a game-day scene different from the environment at modest Lewis Field. Miles expressed his gratitude for the late Pickens, who became the stadium’s namesake in 2003 when Miles was at OSU. “I enjoyed him during my time here, except I just wish I had had more time with him,” Miles said.

Despite the changes at OSU, familiar, friendly faces greeted him upon his return. Before kickoff, Miles, Kathy and their elder daughter, Kathryn, nicknamed Smacker, chatted with Gundy on the field. Miles was also reunited with director of operations Mack Butler and director of football relations Johnny Barr, people he used to see on a daily basis.

In Miles’ postgame press conference, he described Gundy as a great coach, and Gundy shared the positive feelings.

“I have a lot of respect for Coach (Miles),” Gundy said. “I hope he feels the same way. I asked him if (he is) having fun, and he said he’s having a ball, which I’m sure he is.”

After the friends and former coworkers caught up with each other, Miles became another guy across the field when Gundy switched into game mode.

“When the game’s going on, I never really notice who’s on the other side,” Gundy said.

“I forget most of the time, (I’m) so zeroed in on what’s going on. But it was good to see him again.”

Miles wasn’t the only member of his family who stood on the sideline opposite Gundy. Miles’ elder son, Manny, is a backup quarterback who swapped in for starter Carter Stanley through the third quarter. It was an opportunity for Manny to play football in the town he knew as a boy, the place where his father led the Cowboys.

“These people here were awfully kind to my family,” Miles said. “...

(We) have always looked back at this time as being pretty special to our family.”
