When Zac Helms steps outside to begin his shift, the rest of Oklahoma State University is starting to settle down for the night.

He pauses in the parking lot in front of the OSU Police Department and radios in, dispatching to say he is available and on the clock; or more succinctly, “10-8.”

When dispatch radios back “clear,” he clips his radio to his belt and starts his patrol.

But Helms is not a police officer.

He is a student, triple majoring in psychology, Spanish and political

science. Other students might work part-time in a coffee shop, a restaurant or some form of retail, but Helms works for OSUPD. His title is “Public Safety Officer.” He is part of OSU’s Safe Walk program, an initiative announced in 2014. It allows students who are out late to request a public safety officer, like Helms, to walk them back to their dorms. Since then the program has expanded.

Now, instead of only walking people around campus, Helms is responsible for making sure his assigned buildings are secure.

Public safety officers are the eyes and ears of

OSUPD. That is the main function of Safe Walk, Sgt. Leah Storm, the program’s founder, said in an email. Storm assists the people who supervise Safe Walk.

“In conjunction to the Safe Walk program they perform building security checks and ground checks,” Storm said. “If they see suspicious activities, they will use police radio to request a police officer respond to the incident.”

Helms is assigned to a particular type of shift.

Tonight it’s what he calls “Res Life.” As part of the shift, he walks up and down the halls of the buildings in his area, checking to make sure

everything is as it should be. If a call for a safe walk comes in, Helms will drop everything to go to the person asking for an escort home.

“Our primary purpose is the safe walks,” Helms says.

People who call for a safe walk can identify Helms because of his black polo shirt embroidered with the OSU logo and the words “Public Safety Officer.” The trainee with him tonight is wearing a lanyard with his ID card attached, but Helms’ is in his wallet; his lanyard is broken, and he doesn’t want to lose his ID. Again.

“I like to profess my faith as much as possible.”

Helms was raised in a Christian home and came to faith at 7. He says his faith is integral to why he does what he does and how he does it.

“Christianity is very big on loving your neighbor, which I take to include making sure they’re safe,” Helms says.

His family is important to his choice of parttime work for another reason. His father, who later worked for the Drug Enforcement Administration, was a STORY CONTINUES ON PAGE 3

“I’ve grown up around it.”

Unlike his brother and sister, Helms doesn’t want to become a police officer.

Instead, he intends to take the knowledge from his triple major and go to law school.

He wants to work in criminal law or corporate law. The Safe Walk program is a way for him to stay involved in law and law enforcement while he gets his degree.

Balancing these goals and his part-time job are difficult; since he became a public safety officer last May, he has had to make

some changes to his social life.

“Social life at night has obviously declined,” Helms says.

But he says his best friends are his roommates, which makes staying connected a little easier.

When it comes to his three majors, Helms says discipline is key, and his regular schedule allows him to follow a post-shift routine.

“Sleep a few hours, wake up, go to class, then come back and sleep.”

A normal shift is either 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. or 10 p.m. to 3 a.m.

Helms says the unusual hours are the hardest part of the job, but ensuring people

are safe makes it worthwhile.

“I enjoy feeling like I’m contributing to the safety of the campus.”

As the night wears on, Helms hears police calls on his radio about events that are a little more exciting than walking from building to building: Drug paraphernalia. Students on top of Wentz Garage.

A burglar alarm. But those things are outside his jurisdiction, so he keeps walking down the halls and checking to make sure everything is all right.

“I do get bored,” Helms says. “It doesn’t help that there’s not so much I can do.”

These are the little

things that consume a bulk of the reports he handles as a public

safety officer when not doing safe walks.

But Helms says he thinks about how Timothy McVeigh was caught after the Oklahoma City bombing because an officer noticed a missing license plate, a little thing.

“That’s always what’s kind of raced through my mind,” Helms says.

So until Helms graduates, he will keep doing what he’s doing: making OSU students a little safer.

No matter how good the opponent is, coach Larry Sanchez preaches that the meet is never over until it’s over.

The No. 7 Oklahoma State equestrian team defeated the No. 3 Baylor Bears in an 11-9 thriller on Saturday inside Totusek Arena. With the victory, the Cowgirls have not only won five straight against the Bears but also have improved to 16-0 all-time at home against Baylor.

After falling behind midway through the meet, OSU made a comeback in the reining event to seal its first win of the season in front of a home crowd.

“Baylor’s got a very strong team and rode well all day long,” Sanchez said. “Thanks to our reining riders, who kept their minds where it needed to be, we ended up winning 4-1 and brought it through for us.”

Zieglar scored a team-high 85 to propel the Cowgirls to a 3-2 victory.

“Normally, when I have a good first jump, it sets the tone for the whole course,” Zieglar said.

“Once I got that first big jump down, everything just kept flowing.”

Zieglar is 3-0 in over fences in her collegiate career. Although Zieglar is young, she is no stranger to the spotlight.

“For the most part, the transition has been easy,” Zieglar said. “I have been showing on a high level on outside competitions for riding. So I’m kind of used to the pressure.”

Baylor took the momentum away in later events.

The Bears (3-1) nabbed 3-2 victories in horsemanship and on the flat.

Entering the reining portion, the Cowgirls trailed 8-7 and needed at least three of five points to win the meet.

After Hunter De Jane and Kristi Wiggins stockpiled two points for the Cowgirls, second team AllAmerican Hannah Mitchell nailed a 71.5-69.5 victory against Madaline Callaway,

giving the Cowgirls a 10-9 lead late in the meet.

“I just focus on my ride,” Mitchell said. “Personally, I don’t think about the score or outside factors. I just think about what I can do inside the pen that can change all those.”

With the meet coming down to one last ride, Baylor’s Abbi Demel was unable to tie it for the Bears after a 70-69.5 loss to All-American Stephanie Helsen.

OSU will have a tough road ahead of it. The Cowgirls will go on the road on back-to-back days, facing No.1 Auburn on Oct. 10 and No. 5 Georgia on Oct. 11. Sanchez is ready for the challenge ahead and is preparing one step at a time.

“We take something from every meet,” Sanchez said. “Our goal is to continue to get better and better every meet of the year until we get to the postseason.”
