A.J. Green isn’t dismissing any of the Oklahoma State football team’s opponents.

Green and the Cowboys will play on the road for the first time this season when they face Kansas at 11 a.m.

Saturday. The Jayhawks won no Big 12 games last season, but that doesn’t mean OSU’s players expect an easy matchup.

“We don’t want to look over anybody,” Green, a junior cornerback, said. “I don’t think we are looking over anybody, especially not in the Big 12.”

The Cowboys are looking to redeem themselves after a shaky start to conference play. Despite Green’s standout interception in the right corner of the end zone, OSU (3-1 overall, 0-1 Big 12) couldn’t hold back its first Big 12 opponent this season.

Texas Tech toppled the Cowboys 41-17 on Sept. 22 at Boone Pickens Stadium, breaking OSU’s undefeated record.

“We just gotta move forward, and we’ve been working hard,” said Amen Ogbongbemiga, a redshirt sophomore linebacker for the Cowboys. “We worked hard today (Tuesday) just like a normal week, like nothing

happened, but we know that we can’t let that happen again.”

After the loss, Jim Knowles, the Cowboys’ first-year defensive coordinator, hasn’t strayed from his usual mindset in practice, Green said.

“He doesn’t show any frustration or fatigue or anything,” Green said.

“He stays on us, just keeps pushing us hard.”

This week, Knowles is preparing the Cowboy defense to take on one of the conference’s top running backs.

Pooka Williams Jr., a KU freshman, leads the Big 12 in rushing yards per game with 125.7.

OSU’s Justice Hill ranks one spot below him with 97 yards per game.

Williams Jr. has tallied three touchdowns and 377 yards, including his longest run for 72 yards.

He received Big 12 Player of the Week honors after the Jayhawks stormed past Central Michigan 31-7 in their week two game.

Although KU most recently fell to Baylor on the road, it posts a 2-2 record, already a difference from when the Jayhawks notched a lone victory last season.

since 2007, but like Green, Ogbongbemiga recognized OSU should take this matchup seriously.

“We just can’t fall asleep,” Ogbongbemiga said. “If you fall asleep, especially on the road, that’s when bad things happen. We gotta come out there, we gotta execute from kickoff, the first kickoff.”

Peyton Bender, KU’s senior quarterback, has thrown no interceptions through four games.

He has 490 passing yards for four touchdowns this season.

Kerr Johnson Jr. and Steven Sims Jr. lead the Jayhawks’ wide

receiver corps. They have combined for 286 yards, 27 catches and three touchdowns.

OSU is making adjustments at the receiver position after Jalen McCleskey, who has the sixth-most receptions in Cowboy history with 167, chose to redshirt for the rest of the season and transfer.

Landon Wolf, a redshirt sophomore and former walk-on, is replacing him in the slot.

For Tyron Johnson, a redshirt junior wide receiver, OSU’s first road rivalry is also a reunion with someone he knew before his Cowboy career began.

Tony Hull, the associate head coach/ running backs coach at KU, coached Johnson when he attended Warren Easton High School in New Orleans.

Johnson played on Hull’s state championship team in 2014.

Johnson, a five-star recruit out of high school, said he always enjoys seeing Hull and added that he doesn’t plan to engage in trash talking with his former coach.

“It’s all love,” Johnson said.

This season, Johnson has 206 receiving yards, which rank second on the Cowboys’

squad behind Tylan Wallace’s 442 yards.

As Johnson anticipates traveling to Lawrence, Kansas, he said he is ready for the Cowboys to recover from last weekend’s game.

“We’ve got a bad taste in our mouth,” Johnson said. “Texas Tech came in here, and they punched us in our face. Gotta respond to Kansas, a good Kansas team that we can’t take for granted.”

Homecoming Steering Committee ‘disappointed’ with lack of support jaco b sturm staff reporter @ o c olly

For the second consecutive year the Oklahoma State University Student Government Association didn’t provide the Homecoming Steering Committee with the maximum allotment it can give an oncampus group.

The committee declined to accept any funds from SGA for this year’s homecoming in a shocking turn of events at an SGA senate meeting in the Student Union on Wednesday night.

HSC representative Brooks McKinney refused the funds on behalf of the group. The proposed amount was short of the

allowed $1000.

“We are very disappointed in the lack of support that the Student Government Association is showing,” McKinney said.

The Steering committee surprised many of the senators at their meeting. Senate Chair Holland Gray said he was shocked at the situation.

“We had no idea that they weren’t satisfied,” Gray said.

SGA discussed multiple bills that could be passed, and approved the allocation of the budget to different organizations.

Some of the groups that the senate mentioned included the Vietnamese American Student Association (VASA) and the Homecoming Steering committee.

VASA received sponsorship funds from SGA when the senate voted in favor of the bill that will provide $500 to help support the group.

VASA announced that it will use part of the accumulated funds to provide free

shirts to their volunteers and performers at its Harvest Moon Festival on Friday.

Funds raised at the festival will be donated to the United Way. Another topic of discussion was the incorporation of Turning Point USA, an

organization that has been involved in protests and counter-protests at campuses around the nation.

An important bill discussed during the meeting talked about Turning Point USA being included on OSU’s campus.

Turning Point USA is a national group that promotes bringing speakers to college campuses to discuss political issues, oftentimes in controversial ways.

SGA Senator Sydney Smith said she supported having Turning Point on campus.

“This organization is not just about politics,” Smith said.

Many are opposed to Turning Point being on campus because of some

of the protests they have caused, as well as some of the leaders’ comments on social media.

Vice senate chair Mason Russell said he didn’t think that the HSC’s refusal will have major influences on the decisions of future SGA senators.

“Older senators may remember that event while newer senators will have only heard stories,” Russell said.

SGA meets Wednesday evenings in Case Study 2 in the Student Union.
