Landon Wolf walked through the glass doors of Café Libro at 8:30 a.m., on time as usual.

Unlike many students, he didn’t roll out of bed and ride a Bird scooter across campus minutes before he arrived for the interview. Wolf had been up and grinding since 5 a.m. with football workouts, team breakfast and study sessions, but he offered no complaints.

Dedication and hard work recently earned him a full-ride scholarship as a wide receiver on the Oklahoma State football team.

“People don’t always realize how big of a deal a football scholarship is,” Mike Groce, OSU’s director of football recruiting, said. “We don’t split the money up, so if we get 85 scholarships, then 85 players get everything paid for: tuition, fees, room and board. Everything.”

Rod Johnson, OSU’s assistant director of football operations, called Wolf into his office in August to tell him he had earned a scholarship, and the gravity of a scholarship isn’t lost on Wolf.

head so many times that I was mainly calm,” Wolf said. “I was happy to finally see everything come into motion.”

Especially because a football scholarship was something Wolf had nearly written off.

After Wolf’s junior year at East Central High School in Tulsa, he almost gave up on football. His coach quit without warning, and Wolf worried football wasn’t the practical path he was meant to pursue.

Hope and renewed determination arrived in the form of offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich.

“Yurcich came up for a visit in Tulsa,” Wolf said. “He showed real interest in me.”

After a campus visit and an invitation to walk on, Wolf joined the Cowboy family.

For the next two years, Wolf worked conscientiously. He showed up for practice on time, played aggressively and prepared for any opportunity he might have to perform.

But the first two years of Wolf’s collegiate career weren’t spent just grinding on the football field.

Wolf takes his academics equally seriously and is enrolled in 18 hours, three

hours above what is considered a full-time student athlete.

When Pat Dawson, OSU’s athletic academic facilitator, discussed Wolf, she smiled as if she was bragging on her grandson.

“Dependable, determined and dedicated,” Dawson said. “If he says he’s going to be here Monday at 8 a.m., he’ll be here. He works so hard.”

She then leaned in like a middle school girl sharing a secret.

“He’s one of my favorites,” she said.

Wolf hopes to own a business that assists students with the transition from high school to either the workforce or post-secondary school, specifically for minority and inner-city kids.

“I want to make the transition easier for the kids coming up under me,” Wolf said.

“Kids could come and collaborate, do ACT prep, learn interview skills, how to file taxes … life prep stuff.”

But before Wolf proves his ability as a business owner, he has two more seasons of opportunities to prove his abilities on the football field.

This past week, the opportunity Wolf had patiently been waiting for arrived with the departure of teammate Jalen McCleskey. McCleskey, a senior wide receiver, announced his decision to redshirt the rest of the season and subsequently transfer, leaving a starting wide receiver slot open.

This was Wolf’s opportunity to prove his place. In his position, many people might have choked under the pressure.

Wolf seized the opportunity he had patiently awaited.

With six receptions for 116 yards and a touchdown in the Cowboys’ victory against Kansas, Wolf justified his place as a starting wide receiver. Training in the shadows of soon-tobe OSU legends such as James Washington, Chris Lacy, and Marcell Ateman, Wolf feels ready.

“I feel like my role is more important now,” Wolf said. “It gives me peace of mind to know I can work hard and that things are taken care of, that I can help my mom out back home.”

Justice Hill’s impact is felt the moment he touches the ball.

But it’s his character and work ethic that drive those around him to excel.

The Oklahoma State football team is preparing to face Iowa State at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Boone Pickens Stadium, rallying around its elusive and humble running back.

It’s no question OSU benefited from its 48-28 victory against the Jayhawks in Lawrence.

“We have to step up the intensity a little bit,” said sophomore receiver Tylan Wallace.

“I know we had a few mistakes offensively and defensively against Kansas. I think we are

just trying to fix those up and get ready for the next game.”

The offense, which was held scoreless for 10 minutes in the first half and for the entire second half at home against Texas Tech, found its groove in Lawrence and rushed for 256 yards.

Boynton, Oklahoma State’s men’s basketball coach, smiled and greeted familiar faces.

Across the chest of Boynton’s white long-sleeved shirt, the word “DISCIPLINE,” in bold, orange letters, was another indication Boynton means business.

One reporter asked Boynton about his shirt and wondered if prints would be available to buy in the future.

Boynton laughed and said the shirt wasn’t for sale.

“You gotta earn this one,” Boynton said.

The Cowboys just wrapped up boot camp and prepared for their first practice open to the media Monday without Michael Weathers.

Weathers, a redshirt sophomore transfer from Miami (Ohio), is still listed on OSU’s roster despite his suspension.

Six hours before Monday’s practice, Weathers sat in the Payne County Courthouse, where the next hearing for his felony grand larceny case was scheduled for 10 a.m. on Nov. 5, which is five days before the Cowboys’ season opener at Charlotte.

Weathers accompanied the team during its summer tour of Italy and Greece for a series of practices and exhibition games.

He was expected to play a major role in a young OSU lineup, but with his legal status in ques-

McGriff and fellow juniors Lindy Waters and Thomas Dziagwa were officially announced as OSU’s captains Wednesday in a post on the Cowboys’ Twitter account.

McGriff’s impact developed last year when he scored 20 points and hauled in nine rebounds in the Cowboys’ electric victories at Kansas and West Virginia.

“We’ve seen a lot of adversity, the core of the team has,” McGriff said. “I know guys should be ready to step up in those big-time moments when their name is called.”

“I go to practice, and whoever’s out there is who I’m gonna coach,” Boynton said. “We really just focus on the guys that are available and try to do the best with what we have at our disposal, and that’ll be no different when we step out here and practice. Until we hear otherwise on (Weathers), that’s the way we’ll approach it.”

Injuries are depleting Carmichael’s options in the midfield.

The Cowgirls lost Charmé Morgan and Anna Lawler for the season, and Coumba Sow chose not to return to the squad.

Then two OSU midfielders, Jaci Jones and Julia Lenhardt, were also substituted out early in the Texas game because of head injury. Jones didn’t dress in uniform for the following Bedlam game, while Lenhardt, though she started, wasn’t in perfect condition, Carmichael said.

A weakened midfield was exposed in the Bedlam loss as the Cowgirls couldn’t control the possession to penetrate OU’s final third. Barring Haley Woodard’s solo goal, the Cowgirls

couldn’t create many attacking opportunities. Carmichael said the players who stepped up to fill the hole have performed to expectations.

“We miss Charmé (Morgan) out wide,” Carmichael said.

“Because Charmé has the ability to break down the other team because she has the ability to beat one-versus-one. We miss Coumba’s (Sow’s) cool head because she can read the game so well.”

Texas Tech (9-3-1, 1-2-1) checks in at Stillwater with one of the top defenses in the nation.

The Red Raiders have conceded only seven goals and recorded eight clean sheets this season, the most among Big 12 teams.

Carmichael said he expects the visitor to pose a threat on both sides of the game.

I think ourselves, Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, we are all hoping West Virginia slips up and it will be an interesting end to the season.”

Comedians Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish paired to create a film with no dull moments.

“Night School,” which Malcolm D. Lee directed, explores the life of high school dropout Teddy Walker (Hart) when a career change forces him to attend night school to get his GED. At the beginning of the movie, life appears to be going well for Teddy.

He drives a luxury car, works a profitable sales job and gets engaged to the woman of his dreams.

After a gas leak at his place of employment destroys the building, Teddy is forced to find a new job. He is offered a position in a financing firm with his friend, but he can begin only after he receives his GED. Desperate to keep up appearances and his luxurious lifestyle, Teddy revisits his old high school to explore the options he has to obtain his GED. He arrives at the high school with the intention of sweet-talking the principal into handing him his GED, but his hopes are quickly crushed when he realizes the principal is the student he bullied in school, Stewart (Taran Killam).

ages Teddy to join the class but warns him it will not be easy. Carrie and Teddy have strong personalities that clash in class.

Along with Carrie and Teddy’s dynamic, the other night school students offer high points in the film. The class features an inmate who video chats into class, a stay-at-home mother and several other students who have incompatible personalities. Despite their differences, they must learn how to work together to better their lives.

Haddish and Hart’s big personalities seem like they would clash on-screen, but in “Night School,” they work together to create many comedic elements. The actors’ constant fighting becomes a way for the characters to begin to understand each other.

When Carrie finally realizes Teddy struggled so much in school because of his learning disabili-

ties, she makes it her mission to do everything in her power to help him succeed. Their time together in class helps them develop an admirable friendship.

Teddy offers a message to audience members when he recognizes he should stay true to himself and work hard for things that do not come easy. This realization toward the end of the movie shows how much his character has grown throughout his time in night school.

The actors offer enough differences to keep the audience entertained and curious about how they will work together. The support system the night students finally build with one another provides the audience a comedy with depth.
