‘Understand, communicate and accept’ Jennifer Jones is building the Idd community at Oklahoma State.

Jennifer Jones lives personally and professionally with the stigma of intellectual and developmental disability.

In 1996, she adopted a year-old boy with the disability, also known as IDD, shortly after she began studying it.

On campus, she teaches courses and leads student projects related to it.

The stigma of intellectual and developmental disability is a part of Jennifer Jones’ personal and professional life.

“The research I do, the classes that I teach

and the way I engage with the community is really around promoting quality of life for individuals who have intellectual disabilities and their families,” Jones said.

Jones said her work means a lot to her, and she said she loves building the IDD community at OSU. She does this through research, instruction, service and outreach with the community.

Jones oversees the research project “Let’s Take a Walk”. This new walking program studies how having OSU students and community members with intellectual and developmental

disabilities walking and talking together each week impacts health and stress levels of college students, community walkers and caregivers.

Catherine Franks was a research assistant for “Let’s Take a Walk” in 2017, and she now works for Developmental Disabilities Services on campus. Franks said this position means visiting individuals with IDD all over the state.

During the visits she surveys them about the quality of care the state gives them.

“I never realized how much of a difference you can make by just having a conversation

with someone who has an intellectual or developmental disability,” Franks said.

Franks used to walk with a man in his late 20s with IDD at Let’s Take a Walk events.

She said they walked together for an hour three times a week, and after the first couple of weeks he started kissing Franks on the head to say hello. Franks said she felt uncomfortable but did not want to hurt his feelings or damage the relationship. Franks told Jones about the situation, and Jones told her to just be honest.

that Franks handled the situation, and that some people might react negatively in a situation like that.

People with IDD might find it hard to understand certain things about social context, and others might find those with IDD hard to understand.

Franks said that honesty is key when communicating with someone with IDD. “You cannot assume that they will comprehend certain body language or social cues, because chances are they won’t

get it,” Franks said.

Another program that helps build a support system for those with IDD on campus is REAL CommUNIty. Jones’ daughter, Maggie, is president of the student organization.

“I wanted to be president because I saw that positive change could be grown at OSU and thought I could be the one help provide that,” Maggie said.

Garrett Jones, known to his friends as G, is Maggie’s older brother, and the adopted son of Jones.

Garrett said he enjoys being a part of the IDD community on campus.

“I have made so many friends, and I always have fun at all of the meetings and parties,” Garrett said.

It’s clear Jones’ dedication to helping those with the IDD doesn’t end when she leaves work. With a Ph.D. in human development and a Master’s Degree in psychology, Jones shows her dedication to furthering education and community inclusivity through her research.

When speaking with

Jones and Maggie, it’s evident they both have a deep interest and passion for IDD education and support, and Garrett said he likes to show pride in his family with a cool, confident attitude.

Jones, Garrett, Maggie and Franks all agree that just because someone is diagnosed with a disability doesn’t mean that person always has to be spoken to or treated like someone who’s disabled. Sometimes, Jones said, people just want to feel normal.

“It’s our job to do our best to understand, communicate and accept,” Jones said.

One game after Kentrevious Jones made his Big 12 debut, he didn’t join his teammates on Eddie Sutton Court.

Jones, a freshman forward/ center, was suspended from the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team because of an unspecified rules infraction.

Jones wasn’t on the bench during the Cowboys’ 73-69 loss to Baylor on Monday night in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

“At this point, it’s completely up in the air as to whether he’ll return or not,” Mike Boynton, OSU’s coach, said. “It’s all pretty fresh.

That’s something that we’ll have to deal with.”

This isn’t the first time Jones has faced consequences

for violating team standards.

Jones didn’t play against Central Arkansas on Dec. 21 because of disciplinary reasons, Boynton said. He didn’t appear in the next four games, including the Cowboys’ first three conference matchups.

None of their first five conference games have ended in a difference of more than 10 points.

OSU started the Big 12

schedule with losses to Iowa State and Oklahoma. The Cowboys recovered with victories against Texas and West Virginia, but the Baylor game pushed them back to a losing conference record.

“If we don’t have it figured out by now, it’s not gonna get any easier,” McGriff said.

“This league is very competitive, the most competitive in the country, so I think the guys got it through their heads that it’s gonna come down to two possessions in the last two or three minutes of every game that we play in.”

Fans of Spider-Man and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) can rejoice as the first trailer for the highlyanticipated “Spider-Man: Far From Home” has finally been released.

The long-awaited trailer comes at an interesting time for the MCU with “Captain Marvel” and “Avengers: End Game” right around the corner. You can tell the film makers are trying to walk the fine line between teasing the new Spider-Man movie without spoiling anything that could happen in “End Game.”

Regardless, there is still a lot to analyze in this trailer as it seems like they were still able to hint at some major plot points of the story. Here is an analysis of the first trailer for “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”

A staple of the “Ultimate Spider-Man” comic series was Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) always keeping tabs on Peter throughout his time in high school, essentially saying that Spider-Man was going to be “drafted” into S.H.E.I.L.D. once he turned 18. This relationship between Fury and Peter seems to be one they are going to start exploring as a subplot in “Far From Home.”

The most confusing part of the trailer for many people are the elemental creatures that seem to be attacking London. One is earth-based and one is water-based, leading many to speculate that this could be Sandman and Hydro-Man working with

Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal), who is the lead villain of the film.

However, it seems more likely that these two elementals are going to be a part of a bigger super-villain group known as “The Elementals.” This group debuted in Marvel Comics around 1975 and haven’t been relevant since then. The members of The Elementals are Hydron, Magnum, Hellfire and Zephyr.

The 2018 season was one to forget for the Oklahoma State football team, especially for the OSU defense.

The Cowboys’ defense held its own at times, but for the majority of the season it struggled under first-year defensive coordinator Jim Knowles.

“I’m gonna do breakdowns, watch every play,” Knowles said after OSU’s win against Missouri about his plans for the offseason. “I’m gonna watch every bad play about 600 times. I’m gonna not sleep all offseason.

Anything an offense can do, they’re gonna do it in the Big 12.”

Here’s a way-too-early look at the 2019 Cowboy defense and special teams:

Defensive Line To say the defensive line is a question mark for the 2019 Cowboys would be an understatement.

Joe Bob Clements will have his hands full trying to piece this unit back together will all it’s losing.

OSU loses five of its top eight contributors on the defensive line, including all four of its starters. It’s losing 21 sacks and 161 total tackles from this unit heading into next year.

The good news is all four guys likely to fill the starting spots have played in some capacity. Cameron Murray and Brendon

Evers both recorded seven tackles this season, and Brock Martin showed signs of his potential this season.

However, no matter how effective the starters are, the second unit is a complete toss up. In the fast-paced Big 12 conference, playing multiple defensive linemen is a must.

The rotation is something Joe Bob Clements will have to sort out once spring and fall camp roll around.

Linebacker Losing Justin Phillips to graduation is going to hurt this unit. Other than that, it returns everyone.

But Phillips was a major piece and led the Cowboys’ defense at season’s end with 26 straight starts under his belt.

Calvin Bundage battled injuries for a good portion of this season and should be back in a big way in 2019. Who else steps up and starts in Phillips’ spot is yet to be determined.

Kevin Henry, suprisingly, started the bowl game in place of a hurt Bundage. He’ll be a fifth-year player and the veteran of the group next season.

Devin Harper showed glimpses this year, while Amen Ogbongbemiga made his presence known on special teams. For the Cowboy defense to improve upon its disappointing 2018 campaign, both the linebacker and defensive back units will need players to step up

and fill some big holes.

Secondary The secondary as a whole has a chance to be a strength of this Cowboy defense going into next season. It struggled at times this season, especially with giving up the big plays, but everyone’s coming back.

At cornerback, A.J. Green and Rodarius Williams return for what will be both of their third seasons starting at cornerback. When Williams was called for targeting against Missouri in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, fans were given a glimpse of Kemah Siverand and Bryce Balous. They will be the backups at this spot.

At safety, OSU was incredibly young in 2018.

At times, they had two, sometimes three freshmen starting at the safety position.

Malcolm Rodriguez will be the veteran of the group as a junior. He injured his knee against Missouri, but details of the injury have not been disclosed since then.

Along with him will be Kolby Peel, Jarrick Bernard and Tanner McCallister. The latter three will all be sophomores and received playing time as freshmen this season.

Knowles’ 4-2-5 defensive scheme relies heavily on safety play. If OSU’s young safeties progress during the offseason, and continue to progress in their second year playing

under Knowles, they have a chance to be a special group. If the safeties, and the secondary as a whole, doesn’t improve from this season in their second year under Knowles, the results in 2019 could look eerily similar.

Kicking OSU returns Matt Ammendola, who will be a fifth-year senior.

Ammendola finished the season 16-of-22 on field goals, but was marred by a three-game stretch against Texas, Baylor and Oklahoma in which he went 2-of-7. His season long was from 48 yards.

Jake McClure was the place kicker all season and returns at that spot.

Punting Matt Hockett filled in well for Zach Sinor punting in 2018 after Sinor was sidelined because of injury. Both players graduate, however, paving the way for somebody new to be at this spot.

Enter 27-year-old Tom Hutton, an Australian carpenter who OSU signed in its 2019 recruiting class. Hutton comes from ProKick Australia, an organization known for grooming Australian kickers. Even with his old age, he still has four years of eligibility left.
