The Oklahoma State football team was sitting in its large theater underneath Boone Pickens Stadium when the doors at the top of both aisles opened.

Out one door stepped assistant director of operations Rod Johnson, and a former defensive lineman out the other.

They both were fully suited up, giving the team a little preview of their uniforms for Saturday’s game

against Kansas.

Black helmets with the bright orange OSU logo, grey jerseys and black pants, with little details all over paying homage to the United States military.

With the uniform announcement video playing in the background, the players started jumping out of their seats and clapping as the models strutted down the aisles to the front of the room.

“We usually don’t know (uniforms) until we show up in the locker room,” re-

ceiver Dillon Stoner said. “But Folds of Honor went ahead and showed us early on Sunday. It’s an honor.

It’s a big time privilege to get to wear those.”

The team announced Sunday it had partnered with Nike to design uniforms to commemorate Veterans Day. OSU director of football equipment operations Jason Williams said it took “every bit of a couple years” to put together.

“I met with several Nike officials and

came up with some ideas,” Williams said. “(I) talked to the ROTC here, and made sure that they cool with it. This came about a couple years ago and coach came on board and supported it. We got it approved and here we are.”

Along with Nike, Williams said he worked closely with the OSU ROTC to put the uniforms together.

He wanted to make sure they weren’t too over the top in a way that would still respect the military.

ROTC loved the final product.

The uniforms were designed after a stealth aircraft, along with small touches such as the Folds of Honor logo on the front of the jersey and the American flag and Cowboy Battalion logo on the shoulders.

Instead of the player’s last name across the back, it reads “Cowboy Battalion.”

“To be able to honor those people who are overseas and risking their lives on the daily, it means a lot,” safety Kolby Harvell-

Peel said. “Plus the uniforms are clean.”

Some players have a deeper connection with the military. Defensive lineman Brock Martin’s mother’s dad and step-dad fought in Vietnam, and knows countless others with a military background.

“It’s huge for me,” Martin said. “When I was little, I used to always want to be in the Army or the Marines, so I think it’s really cool for us to be able to do that.”

The Student Union Activities Board hosts events for students on an almost weekly basis.

The events can range from a large-scale production of a drag show to a more intimate trivia night. For students, the events are a way to unwind from the stress of college, but they don’t know what happens down in the basement of the Student Union where members of SUAB are working constantly to make these events happen. SUAB president Julian Thomason discussed what happens behind the scenes.

Q: What is SUAB? A: “SUAB is essentially a programming board that is devoted to putting on free events for students and the Stillwater community. We put on about 30 events a semester. We try to bring as many diverse experiences as possible in order to target different audiences on campus in order to be able to reach the most amount of people.”

Q: Why is it important to bring people to the Student Union?

A: “The student union is not just for the students, but every student on this campus partly owns this building. We all pay in part for this union to function, so it is extremely important that we provide program for students because this is partly their home too.

It’s like the central hub of campus… it’s a place where people unite, where different

cultures come together. There are so many people who come through this building from day to day. I think it is just so important to be sure to provide, not just educational opportunities throughout the academics on campus, but other experiences that come in the form of events that bring people together.”

Q: What does behind the scenes of an event look like?

A: “It varies… a lot of our larger yearly events have that sort of structure where it’s multiple hours in a day leading up to showtime that we are on the move. A typical, like bingo or trivia, we get here an hour, hour-and-a-half to two hours early and that’s typically just because the decoration set up is a little more manageable… Before that behind the scenes, we get here two hours early because they’ve already had that conversation in their meeting about who’s doing what part so that they already have people in certain roles and what the expectations are. We don’t just show up and just start putting stuff up, everyone has a job.

That is definitely an area in which we have grown a lot since I first started. I think it contributes to the success of the event, it seems like it is so streamlined and it is because they put in that forethought to talk through who’s going to be in charge and overseeing what once we get there.”

Q: How do you come up with new events and how does the planning process work for those?

A: “We have an event se-

lection night where all of our members, so all 115, submit proposals of events they would like to see on campus.

In the spirit of growth and trying to be more cognizant of what the campus wants…

I sent out a survey that basically asked students about their preferences… general information as well as committee specific information.

Everything we have done for this upcoming semester, that our members proposed at event selection night was directly linked back to that survey… We narrow down the proposals, committees pick their top five and then we work through our budget and how much money we have to allocate until we have our schedule full.”

Q: What does the committee room look like when you’re working?

A: “We have students in there all the time. There are definitely more students than there are staff members in there constantly. We’ve grown quite substantially over the past semester, some committees will meet down in the office space and a lot of the creation of the decorations will happen down there. On our meeting nights we break out all around the union because we’re so big.

We used to have 40 to 45 to 50 people and now we’re about 110, 115 people.

We can’t cram that many people into that office space.

That space, very loud, very boisterous, very busy all the time.”

Q: How does it feel to go from a programming director

with 45 people to leading an organization with over 100 people?

A: “It is definitely an interesting feeling… To start from a place of having maybe 30 to 35 people to now being at 115, I’m so excited to find that not just that we’ve grown in number. The number is great and I love having more people to brainstorm and obviously the more people involved, the more perspectives you have and the more ideas you have. But as someone who cares so much about this mission after being here for almost four years, it is really exciting for me to be apart of a process that we collectively as a board have gotten more people to care about what we do… The reflection of people knowing who we are and what we do, in terms of putting on events, that’s reflected in how many people come. The number of people who join and want to do this too and put on these events is more of a reflection of people understanding why we’re here and that’s the most exciting thing for me.”

Q: How does it feel to get ideas directly from the student body?

A: “It is really exciting…

It is very comforting to know that we are making sure to listen to our students. The money we’re being given is being used not just for things we think the public wants to see or what we think students would want to go to but things students are genuinely asking about. So it makes me feel a lot better going into the Spring knowing that we’re giving them what they want

while also staying true to our mission and incorporating those extra initiatives that make us SUAB.” Q: What makes you SUAB? A: “The feedback we received were the event ideas, so the fun things that people want. What make SUAB SUAB is the additional aspects that we integrate to create those learning outcomes, in order to make cultural and social issues both enjoyable but also educational.

To make every event that we have have some kind of greater purpose behind it other than just a fun day out on the lawn. Whether that be combating food insecurity or whether it be providing information about mental health awareness, just very current issues on our campus we feel like it is important to integrate those into everything.”

Q: What is something that people don’t know about SUAB? A: “I don’t think people realize our events aren’t just something we throw together that’s meant to be just for fun. Most of them have learning outcomes, most of them have greater proposes. For example, an event like a poetry night or an open mic night is not only just for entertainment value, it’s so students can find their voice on campus. We almost always provide some kind of free food to help combat some level of food insecurity on campus. There’s always a greater mission behind what we do… That’s something I don’t think people understand, just how much thought goes behind, not just the planning process… but also the greater thought that goes into the program that we do, why we choose what we do.”

For an Oklahoman town of its size, it’s fascinating how many people from all over the world with different cultures and backgrounds call Stillwater home, at least for the next four years. To celebrate these cultures at Oklahoma State University, the International Student Organization is hosting their annual pageant Mr. and Ms. International on Friday.

Mr. and Ms. International focuses on the international students at OSU, allowing them to showcase the places they come from while also competing for scholarships.

Fatimah Firdaus, ISO president, and her team have been working on preparing the pageant and making it the best platform for the students to display their culture on stage.

“It is the biggest event put on by ISO,” Firdaus said. “It’s an opportunity for the different area clubs to have two people compete for the title of Mr. and Ms. International. The pageant consists of two parts, the talent portion and the question and answer portion… The talent portion is where they focus on showing off their talent and their diversity, their culture.”

ethnicities culture. While some groups focus on a specific country like the Vietnamese Student Association, others offer more inclusion like the Latin American Student Association. Each of the organizations has their own way to select who will be representing them and wearing the name of their country for a night.

Nicolas Lopez, Mr. Ecuador, saw it as a way to share his culture as well as experience new ones.

“I have been here for three months and this is my opportunity to get more involved with the activities of the university,” Lopez said. “Also, I’ve been fascinated and interested in all the cultures that are here together.”

The talent portion of the show is similar to other pageant where contestants will display their ability but for Mr. and Ms. International, they will also be showcasing the culture they come from. For Lopez, he will be performing songs from

his childhood in Ecuador while others like Nikee Shrestha, Ms. Nepal, will be dancing to the traditional music to capture her country’s spirit.

“What I want them to know about my culture, about my country and to show them how beautiful and diverse my country is through my talent round,” Shrestha said. “I’m going to dance to describe how diverse my country is and I want them to know even if it is a really small country you can explore so many things, you can know so many cultures and people there.”

The pageant will be held on Friday at 7 p.m. in the Student Union Theater.

“A big part of OSU is the diversity on campus and ISO is very proud of how diverse it is,” Firdaus said. “We have around 2,000 international students and we just want to show the rest of campus, the rest of Stillwater how diverse we are.”

Henry’s story continues after receiving sixth year of eligibility J o seph Faz io S po rts Ed itor @ Jo s ephD Faz io

Kevin Henry is grateful for Oklahoma State helping him further his football career and education.

But the linebacker on the OSU football team came close to calling it quits in college athletics. When Henry tore his ACL in a practice drill in 2017, he didn’t know if he could continue.

“I had a couple thoughts at times, I was like I didn’t even want to go to treatment,” Henry said.

Henry said the treatment he went through at the beginning of his recovery was the hardest thing he’s endured.

However, he had a big support group to push him through his recovery: his teammates.

From thereon, Henry fought tooth and nail to get back on the team.

He’s had setbacks along the way, including a concussion early this year.

Although he’s a redshirt senior, Henry’s story isn’t done yet.

Because Henry redshirted his freshman year and was out all of 2017 with his ACL injury, he

qualified to receive a sixth year of eligibility.

Another year to play at OSU was just what Henry wanted.

“It just hit me,” Henry said. “I realized I could have another year so I talked to some people about it. I asked at the beginning of the week and found out at the end.”

When he finally heard the official news, he was ecstatic. Henry, who has already graduated, received his sixth year of eligibility.

He called everyone he could to tell them the news.

Head coach Mike Gundy calls Henry a “success story.”

“We work our butt off but I’ve done this a long time now and the success I see with young men that we have played a role in helping them graduate from college and giving them the opportunity to better themselves is awesome for me,” Gundy said.

Henry’s success story culminated in him becoming the first member of his family to get a college degree.

Neither his siblings, who now work in oil refineries, nor his mother

went to college. But Henry’s mother certainly preached the importance of education to her son.

“She called me all the time, seeing how my class were going,” Henry said. “She’d make sure I’d go to class. She stayed on me academicwise because she knew my potential and she pushed me.”

Henry had his mother motivating him back home, but he’s also had his teammates as motivators throughout his tenure at OSU. They were as excited as Henry was when he found out he received his

sixth year of eligibility.

“I think it’s amazing,” defensive end Brock Martin said. “He’s one of the hardest workers on the team. He’s shown every week, every year and every offseason that he wants to play. He wants to play at a high level.”

Henry’s story isn’t done yet, and he wants to make the most out of what he can in his sixth year.

“You don’t have that many years to play so I want to take advantage of every year that I get,” Henry said.

The Oklahoma State wrestling team will face off against Drexel and No. 6 Lehigh this weekend.

True freshman Reece Witcraft, who is coming off an OCU title, has secured a spot in coach John Smith’s lineup.

All signs point to Witcraft wrestling in No. 10 OSU’s opening duels.

In his first action as a college wrestler, Witcraft went 4-0 on his way to a title at 133 pounds. He totalled 26 team points, which was the second most of any OSU wrestler. He de-

feated Paul Bianchi of Arkansas Little Rock 14-4 in the title match.

Before the tournament, there were still questions as to whether or not he would redshirt as a true freshman. But with a title under his belt, Witcraft has proven his worth.

While Witcraft has earned himself a spot in the lineup, OSU could be without four of its projected starters this weekend.

NEO transfer Alex Kauffman won the OCU open at 197 and was in line to be the Cowboys’ starter at the weight. However, coach John Smith announced that Kauffman had been suspended on

Wednesday for breaking team rules and would miss the weekend’s duels.

It is unclear who Smith will have start at 197, but he’s hinted at it being either Dakota Geer or Anthony Montalvo with the other starting at 184.

The three projected starters absent from the OCU open were Joe Smith, Kaden Gfeller and Neal Putnam.

The trio missed the tournament because of academic issues, and in Putnam’s case. it will keep him in Stillwater this weekend.

The Oklahoma State wrestling team will begin its 2019-20 dual campaign on Friday night against Drexel.

The Drexel match will be a warmup for OSU, as the No. 10 Cowboys travel to Lehigh on Saturday for a battle of top 10 programs.

OSU dominated Lehigh 27-6 in its dual last season. However, Lehigh could be a candidate for a breakout season as it has a ranked wrestler at eight of the ten weight classes.

Coach John Smith said Lehigh has always been a tough program.

“They’re routinely good,” coach Smith said.

“They’ve had a pretty strong program throughout their history.”

Depending on the lineup coach Smith decides to use, there could be as many as three rematches from last season’s dual.

Here are the projected matchups for Saturday’s dual (All rankings are according to FloWrestling).

125: No. 4 Nick Piccininni vs No. 19 Brandon Paetzell Nick Piccininni said he’s looking forward to traveling to the east coast.

“It’ll be good to have my family there,” Piccininni said. “It’s about a four hour trip for them.”

The New York native will face junior Brandon Paetzell, who has a 29-23 record in his three

seasons.

133: Reece Witcraft vs No. 14 Nick Farro Witcraft will most likely start at 133 this weekend after the possibility of him redshirting was removed after the OCU open.

“He looked good this weekend,” Smith said.

“But this is a really good opportunity for him to grow up… it’s an opportunity for him to learn the hard way.”

Nick Farro will make his first dual start at 133 for Lehigh. He had previously started a dual at 125, but has since moved up.

141: No. 10 Kaden Gfeller vs Ryan Pomrinca After moving down from 149 pounds, Kaden Gfeller looks to improve upon his impressive freshman season where he went 9-4 in dual matches and 28-6 overall.

Gfeller will face Ryan Pomrinca, a senior for Lehigh, who has gone 69-35 overall in his career and will look for the upset on Saturday.

149: No. 8 Boo Lewallen vs No. 25 Jimmy Hoffman Former All-American Boo Lewallen, who’s coming off an injury-riddled season, looked impressive in the OCU open and won all four of his matches in the tournament. He has an 48-12 record during his time in an OSU singlet.

“I think he started a little slow,” Smith said.

“He was a little bit hesitant… it’s hard to hit your timing when you haven’t competed for six months.”

165: #25 Travis Wittlake vs Brian Meyer Wittlake and Meyer will make their dual debuts as Wittlake is a redshirt freshman and Meyer competed unattached last season at 157.

John Smith gave Wittlake high praise after his first place finish in the OCU open.

“I was really impressed with him,” Smith said.

“He scored the most takedowns of anyone on the team as a freshman.”

174: No. 6 Joe Smith vs No. 2 Jordan Kutler Smith and Kutler have met twice before with Kutler winning both times.

Smith, a two-time AllAmerican, will look for revenge against one of the few opponents he has never defeated.

184: No. 4 Dakota Geer/Anthony Montalvo vs No. 25 Chris Weiler

Depending on who John Smith decides to use at 184, this could be the third and final rematch from last year’s dual, in which Geer defeated Weiler 13-5.

Anthony Montalvo is also a candidate for this spot, given his strong performance at 184 in the OCU open. Montalvo went 2-0 in the tournament before John Smith opted to save a potential Geer versus Montalvo matchup for the practice room.

Their opponent, Chris Weiler, is a former NCAA qualifier and has a 69-32 record on his resume.

take the 197 spot after it was revealed that Alex Kauffman was suspended this weekend for a violation of team rules.

Geer does have previous experience at 197 as he filled in for Preston Weigel while he was injured last season and went 15-4 in his 19 matches.

“We will be taking both Geer and Montalvo this weekend,” Smith said.

“Chances are one of those guys wrestles at 197.”

For Lehigh, Jake Jakobsen qualified for the NCAA tournament last season, but has struggled this season with a 3-2 record so far.

HWT: Austin Harris vs No. 4 Jordan Wood Neal Putnam will not

wrestle this weekend so Austin Harris will start at heavyweight.

Lehigh junior Jordan Wood is one of the top-ranked wrestlers at heavyweight and will be a tough matchup for anyone.

He finished fourth at the NCAA tournament last season with a 25-5 record.

This dual will likely be a close one, as both Oklahoma State and Lehigh have several highlyranked wrestlers as well as talented, yet unproven wrestlers who could provide a spark.

“It’ll be a tough dual meet,” Smith said. “It looks to be very competitive, for us, it’s going to be about winning six matches.”

The number of games left in the 2019 season for Oklahoma State women’s soccer team now rests entirely on its shoulders.

The stakes are simple: lose and the season ends.

The Cowgirls open NCAA tournament play Friday night at Neal Patterson Stadium against South Dakota State, the winners of the Summit League.

OSU coach Colin Carmichael said games like these are the ones his players look forward to the most.

“The main that changes is that ‘one and done’ mentality,” Carmichael said. “You’re just playing and laying it all on the line every game because you know if you don’t get the job done you don’t get to play next week.”

The Cowgirls enter the tournament as a No. 3 seed. However, the Jack Rabbits present one of the best defenses in the country.

SDSU has only allowed eight goals this season, sitting behind Monmouth, Brown and South Carolina nationally. OSU striker Gabriella Coleman said she is prepared to find a way through the Jack Rab-

bits’ defense.

“If I play my game, I’ll be able to break down the defense easily,” Coleman said.

“Every defense has a weakness and that’s what I’ll try to expose.”

This will be Coleman’s second trip to the NCAA tournament play.

The Mississippi State transfer has never seen a second round of the NCAA tournament after her team was bounced out in the first game.

With OSU, Coleman said the script will be different.

“This year I’m going to make a difference and try to get to as many rounds as we can,” Coleman said.

This will also be the first NCAA tournament game for sophomore defender Ally Jackson as the Cowgirls missed out on the tournament last year.

OSU is coming off of a 2-1 double overtime loss to Kansas in the Big 12 tournament semifinals. However, Jackson said the loss was a blessing in disguise.

“Obviously we don’t like to lose but it was good for us to get rest,” Jackson said.

With the loss in the semifinals, the Cowgirls received an extra day off to prepare for the matchup with South Dakota State. Jackson

said that will become a key factor.

“Especially since we’re low on numbers and don’t use too many people off the bench I feel like that will really help us,” Jackson said.

While the Jack Rabbits enter the game with one of the top defenses in the nation, they also have two notable threats in attack.

Leah Manuleleua and Maya Hansen have combined for nearly twothirds of SDSU’s goals this season with 11 and seven, respectively.

Carmichael said Big 12 play has prepared his defense for challenges such as this.

“Kansas has some very good attacking kids, Texas Tech, Texas.

We’ve got a plan that we use within our shape to try to minimize touches their touches in front of goal,” Carmichael said.

Another factor that Carmichael said aids the Cowgirls is a lively Neal Patterson stadium.

“If the place is busy like it was for Baylor and OU it just makes the place jump and that gives our kids a little boost,” Carmichael said.

“Hopefully we’ll have a big crowd, the drum line will be there and the students will come out in force and cheer us on and that definitely gives our kids a boost.”
