Madison Weiser has been working hard since February 2018 to prepare for the annual CowboyThon fundraiser that took place Saturday.

Weiser, an accounting senior at Oklahoma State University, was this year’s executive director.

CowboyThon is a studentled philanthropy that raises money for the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Oklahoma, which is an affiliate of the Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Its main event was the annual 12-hour dance marathon that took place Saturday from 10 a.m.

to 10 p.m. in the Colvin Annex. This year was the eighth dance marathon but only the third official CowboyThon.

Weiser is a transfer student from Penn State University, which is home to Thon, the largest dance marathon and student-led philanthropy in the world. During her freshman year, Weiser was introduced to Thon and fell in love. When she transferred to OSU her sophomore year, she immediately found CowboyThon.

“I’ve had a really fun time taking what I learned at Penn State and paring it down to make it applicable here,” Weiser said.

During her sophomore year, Weiser was the co-

director of the morale committee. Last year, she was the vice president of membership. This year, as executive director, she was responsible for communicating with the regional Miracle Network Dance Marathon manager, advisers at the hospital and university faculty advisers to ensure the organization was in compliance with all rules and regulations. She was also responsible for overseeing the board of vice presidents.

His stories will start in towns such as Boley, Rentiesville, Deep Deuce, and Greenwood and reach into the histories of business, the arts, government, and the struggle for civil rights. Dr. Blackburn will emphasize the fact that diversity was baked into the DNA of Oklahoma history from the very beginning.

team, which was made up of 22 committee directors who were in turn responsible for the 155 members of Big Committee. Although Weiser and the executive team have been working on CowboyThon for almost a year, the entire group has only been working for about five months.

“I think she’s done great,” said Delton Hall, the vice president of fundraising.

“The thing about this organization, it does take a lot of patience. You’re working with a bunch of busy college students. I think she’s done a great job with just getting everybody together and keeping that motivation, keeping everybody on the same track

and on the same pace.”

Weiser said she considers her position a full-time job.

It keeps her busy and can be stressful, but she said working with the kids helps her put her life into perspective.

“The fact that we can do something so simple and brighten their day and brighten their life, that is something that you don’t really get in any other organization,” Weiser said. “That’s why I love it.”

About 1,200 people registered for the dance marathon, around 600 participated and 10 Miracle Families attended. Last year, CowboyThon raised $165, 249.18 for the Children’s Hospital Foundation. This year, it

raised $122, 469.16.

Weiser will graduate in May, but she plans to take graduate courses at OSU next year. She said she hopes to be able to continue to work with CowboyThon.

Weiser has dedicated the past three years of her life to CowboyThon. As she moves forward from OSU, she will not forget the impact that it has had on her life.

“In some way, I’m always going to try to give back and help,” Weiser said.

Christ was completely reliant on his Father. He knew God loved him, therefore he trusted God, humbled himself and walked in God’s will, step by step. As Christians, you and I have become sons of God. He loves us and will also guide us.

We are to trust God, present ourselves to him. He will work in and through us a life that counts for this life and eternity. Trust and submit to him, He will not fail.

The phrase “Make America Great Again” is what some people say keeps America from being great.

President Donald Trump popularized the phrase during his 2016 election campaign, and Trump supporters wear red hats with the slogan on them with pride. To some, the hats are simply a way to show support for Trump, but others said they believe the MAGA hats are a symbol of racism and white supremacy.

Rebekah Herrick, a professor of political science at Oklahoma State University who studies gender

and minority politics, said she hasn’t seen any polling on the topic, but she believes the hats will become a symbol of white supremacy if they have not already.

“The phrase ‘Make America Great Again’ certainly has developed a connotation and a thought of making America white again,” Herrick said.

“When I see the hat, I would think it would conjure up the same images as, maybe not quite as harshly, as a Klan’s hat would.”

Breiana Jackson, an African-American political science sophomore, said she considers the hats to be racist because she considers Trump racist.

“Wearing paraphernalia

that represents a person or an ideology is tricky, especially when it’s something bold like the ‘Make America Great Again’ hat,” Jackson said. “It’s a statement. So if you’re wearing it, then you support this person and whatever they want to do... and how they feel about certain topics.”

Jackson said the MAGA hats are not only racist but also oppressive.

“When I see somebody with that hat, it’s like regardless of what Trump says, regardless of what he does, regardless of what policies he makes and statements he makes, they’re going to support him regardless,” Jackson said. “So, you’re supporting a sexist, you’re

supporting a racist, you’re supporting a xenophobe, supporting a homophobe, a transphobe.”

Bear Kidd, a zoology senior, said he supports Trump and does not think Trump is racist, but he understands some people do.

“I think the people on the left said the hats were racist, and so then racist people on the right sort of wore them as like a badge of honor then,” Kidd said.

“The hat itself is not racist.

I think people have used it to make a race thing around it.”

Herrick said she believes the type of hat the MAGA hats are have something to do with why people associate them with white supremacy. She said the

hats are the type of hat she associates with blue collar white men.

“I think that that is just another element of the slogan attached with something that is associated with sort of Joe Sixpack,” Herrick said. “You know, conservative white men.

I think it has some sort of extra potency there.”

Kidd said he doesn’t think it’s fair for people to assume that just because someone supports Trump it means that person is racist.

“If you wear one, I think you’re just sort of asking for trouble nowadays, especially on a college campus,” Kidd said. “I wish people wouldn’t go up to someone wearing a hat and just assume they

have a KKK robe in the closet. Immediate action to the hats isn’t the best way to proceed.”

Jackson said she knows not every Trump supporter is racist, but she said she thinks people need to be aware of the image they are projecting if they choose to wear MAGA hats.

“If you’re trying to recreate the hat and wear it as something as national pride, just think about how it’s affecting other people,” Jackson said.

Review: ‘Head Above Water’ presents new version of Avril Lavigne J e t Turn er,

Avril Lavigne dives into personal issues of the past six years with her new album “Head Above Water.”

Lavigne’s sixth studio album is her first project since her 2013 self-titled album, and it’s distinctly more personal than other projects she has released.

Taking a break from the signature pop-punk sound that made her famous, Lavigne’s lyrics seem to hold much more weight when compared to music she has recorded before.

Starting the album off with the title track, “Head Above Water” is one of

the more genuine songs released this year. Obvious from the lyrics and the tone in her voice, this is a version of Lavigne that has not been seen before.

Of course, Lavigne does already have a catalog of power ballads and similar music, but the way everything else is presented in this album seems much more genuine. This project is more for Lavigne than it is for anyone else.

After this, though, the album continues right on track and doesn’t stop with the sound established at the beginning.

This album displays the heartbreak and hardships Lavigne has experienced over the last six years, including a divorce from ex-husband and Nickleback front man Chad Kroeger in 2015. Most prominently sang about, though, is her battle with Lyme disease.

Battling the disease for the last two years, Lavigne said in an interview with People Magazine that she was bedridden almost the entire time, treating the disease with antibiotics and herbs.

This album and what she has experienced has been the perfect time for Lavigne to reinvent herself, and reinvent herself she did.

This new, more heartfelt and personal Lavigne is the version of herself that fans new and old have been clamoring for.

“Head Above Water” takes risks that we have not seen Lavigne take yet, and all of them pay off. If you are looking for a heartfelt and soulful album, then look no further.

In its biggest test of the season, the No. 2 Oklahoma State wrestling team narrowly defeated No. 5 Missouri 19-15 on Saturday.

After starting off strong with a streak of three straight wins to go into intermission, the Tigers showcased that even though the Cowboys are 14-0, there are still some issues to figure out before the Big 12 tournament.

Here are three takeaways from the Cowboys’ suddenvictory win against Missouri:

Jacobe Smith, Chandler Rogers should start at 165 and 174.

three All-American finishes, they should be the pair John Smith chooses when OSU heads to Tulsa on March 9.

Cowboys will go as far as Piccininni, Fix and White take them.

Arguably the team’s three most consistent wrestlers this season have combined for a 72-2 record, with the only losses coming to No. 5 Micky Phillippi (133) and No. 1 Gable Stevenson (HWT).

In the match with Missouri, the trio accounted for the team’s first seven points as well as the final three, with White winning the match in sudden-victory against Zach Elam to secure the victory.

With questions still looming in the Cowboys’ lineup, they will need to rely on this trio as they look for their seventh straight Big 12 title and 35th team National Championship.

In Saturday’s matchup, Missouri broke their previous home attendance record by nearly 2,000, which created an intimidating atmosphere for the visiting Cowboys.

The effects of the hostile environment were felt as OSU dropped three straight before the intermission as well as at 174, but they rebounded and won the final three matches to win a narrow dual, 19-15.

When No. 3 Iowa travels to Stillwater on Sunday, the size and impact of the crowd should only be a benefit as OSU attempts to go undefeated in duals this season.

To end the downhill slide, the Oklahoma State men’s basketball team can’t rely on one or two players.

The Cowboys need multiple players to have games like Dziagwa’s to stop the bleeding in Big 12 play. Although Isaac Likekele, OSU’s freshman starting point guard, contributed 16 points, the other Cowboys stayed fairly quiet on offense. Lindy Waters III and Cameron McGriff, his fellow captains, played the whole game, but each notched five points against the Longhorns.

Throughout this losing streak, OSU (9-16 overall, 2-10 Big 12) has often had one or two players who made big impacts. It hasn’t always been Dziagwa.

When the Cowboys fell

to Texas Tech on Wednesday, McGriff scored OSU’s first nine points. The Red Raiders prepared for Dziagwa’s 3-point-shooting prowess and held him to three points.

Each Cowboy needs to stay focused to escape this situation.

No one is to blame for this record-setting losing streak. Mike Boynton, OSU’s coach, is maintaining his cool, collected demeanor in the face of unusual adversity. Without Mike Cunningham, Michael Weathers, Maurice Calloo and Kentrevious Jones, the Cowboys can’t help that they have eight scholarship players and seven available because

bench player Trey Reeves broke his right foot. The grind of college basketball is tough for anyone, but the Cowboys are playing extended minutes with few substitute options.

Texas (15-11, 7-6) has talented players.

Kerwin Roach II, a senior guard, had 16 points and two steals. Dylan Osetkowski, a senior forward, shot 5-for-5 from the field, but the Longhorns and Cowboys are at a comparable skill level.

OSU slipped past Texas when they faced each other Jan. 8 at Gallagher-Iba Arena, before three player dismissals reduced the Cowboys’ roster, though Cunningham left before

that game. An obvious problem, one that carries through each of OSU’s Big 12 games since the Jan. 16 dismissals, was that Texas had more bench options, so their players had more opportunities for rest and recovery.

The Cowboys return to Stillwater to face TCU at 8 p.m. Monday. To secure a victory against the Horned Frogs, Dziagwa needs to be a sharpshooter from 3-point range, and so does Waters.

McGriff needs to electrify Gallagher-Iba Arena with not only his effort plays but also his dunks. Curtis Jones and Duncan Demuth, OSU’s two available scholarship substitutes, need to make an impact. The Cow-

boys had two bench points against the Longhorns, each from Duncan Demuth.

After OSU lost to Texas Tech, Boynton said he has no magic solution.

“Part of it is, you just gotta get tired of getting your butt kicked,” Boynton said.

The Cowboys are tired of it, but it isn’t easy to get out of the rut with seven available scholarship players.

If each of them focus and find a rhythm, as Dziagwa and Likekele did against the Longhorns, then they have a chance.

Being a minority isn’t always easy. We continually struggle to show the world that we are human, too. African-Americans are intelligent, hardworking, beautiful and talented.

In my eyes, Black History Month allows us to see how much of an impact AfricanAmericans have left not only in the United States, but also around the world.

I gain more confidence learning about figures such as Harriet Tubman, an escaped slave and abolitionist who helped lead slaves to freedom with the

Underground Railroad, and Martin Luther King Jr., who played a major part during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s and gave his inspiring message in his “I Have a Dream” speech. Did you know George Crum, a black man, invented the beloved potato chip?

When I read their stories and learn about the downfalls they faced and the triumphs they won, it is powerful.

This application process in‑ volves two separate posi‑ tions; EIC for Summer and EIC for Fall. Applicants can apply for one or the other, or both positions. Be sure to in‑ dicate which position(s) you wish to be considered for on the application form.

To be eligible for Editor‑In‑ Chief, the applicant must be a student on the Stillwater campus of Oklahoma State University, be in good aca‑ demic standing (i.e., not on academic probation), have a grade point average of not less than 2.5, and have com‑ pleted at least 60 hours to‑ ward a degree. Applicant must show evidence of hav‑ ing worked one semester writing for The O’Colly. Students serving as an Editor‑in‑Chief may take up to 6 credit hours of independent study in consultation and approval of their major advisor.

An internship on a newspa‑ per in a newsroom capacity may be substituted for one semester of service on The O’Colly. The internship must meet the requirements of the School of Media and Strate‑ gic Communications’ current internship course.
