Like a New Year’s Eve Instagram post, the O’Colly newsroom is filled with nostalgia but eagerness for the times ahead.

As you can likely tell, we’ve undergone some changes. We’ve got a new logo, brand and editorial board. We moved newsrooms. We said “see you soon” to our longtime adviser who accepted a job in Florida.

announce the conglomeration of the branches of Oklahoma State student media. The O’Colly Media Group is the new company for all things student media. We have the printed and online versions of the O’Colly newspaper. We have our in-house advertising agency. We have KXZY, our in-house radio station. We have the O’Cast, our podcast agency. We’ll have a daily 5 o’clock news show and sports pregame show.

But changing just to change does no good.

We want this rebrand to be more than theoretical goals and ideas. The O’Colly needs change, and we recognize it.

It won’t happen overnight. It won’t happen in a month.

But we are determined to take the O’Colly to where it needs to be -among the nation’s best student media organizations.

Our mission is still the same: to provide a professional environment where students

create outstanding journalism for Oklahoma State students, faculty, staff and alumni and the surrounding Stillwater community.

The O’Colly Media Group is a real media conglomerate that prepares students for a professional career in media.

It’s back to school time, which means it’s time to get back to the grind.

Aug. 20 marks the first day of the semester and for freshmen, the first day of college.

The first week of classes can be both an exciting and stressful time for freshmen, so here are some tips to help your first week go smoothly: The first thing you need to do is make sure you know what your class schedule for each day is. Once you know that, you should look up each class location. It’s always a good idea to visit each building before classes start to make sure you know where they are and how long

Before classes start, check Brightspace (online classroom) for any information or announcements your teacher posted. You’ll learn throughout the semester that this is a smart thing to do before every class period.

Try to make at least one friend in every class. That way you have someone you can study with and if you ever have to miss class for any reason, you will have someone to help. Get their phone number or email so you have a direct line of communication.

Don’t freak out if you don’t have your textbook by the first day of classes.

Sometimes it’s actually better to wait until after the first week of class to buy or rent your book. Teachers will often inform you about where to find the book for the best price. In addition, you might end up dropping that class and not need the book.

Also, don’t be afraid to drop classes! You might realize quickly you are not ready for a certain class or are struggling and need to drop it. Just make sure you talk with your counselor beforehand.

Well, you’re finally at Oklahoma State University, and you’re officially a part of the Cowboy family. Having a good first week is the key to having a good first semester. If you follow these tips, you’re sure to succeed.

College is one of the biggest transformative periods in one’s life.

It presents many new and exciting opportunities. Although the excitement can be overwhelming, the opposite emotion can also come into play.

It’s OK to be nervous.

Many will find some of their misconceptions of college to be wrong within the first few weeks.

Here are five things I wish I would have known entering college:

1. You have options for textbooks If you’re worried about having all of your new textbooks for the first day of class, you’re not alone. In most cases, you are worrying for nothing.

Textbooks are certainly an important part of your studies, but they will seldom be essential for the first day of class. When you do end up needing them, don’t limit yourself to the Student Union bookstore. There are other options to either rent or purchase used books. The bookstore is convenient

but not your only option.

2. Midterm grades are not final You have time to turn your grade around. The only grade that counts is the one on the transcript at the end of each semester. Midterm grades exist to give students an idea of where they rank. If you get a bad midterm grade, forget it. It’s possible to work hard and bring it up by the end of the semester.

3. It is OK to be “undecided” Many students end up changing their majors after getting to college.

So, what’s your major?

That’s the question you’ll have to answer 50 times within the first week.

But if you haven’t quite penciled in your specific path, don’t worry. Often it helps to see the program and meet some of the students and faculty to see if it’s a good fit. Knock out your general education classes and do homework on your potential degree programs, but don’t pull your hair out over it on day one.

4. Skipping class is not as great as it sounds.

You can’t wait to get to college, have a good time and skip a class, right?

Not to sound like mom or dad, but skipping class is not an effective strategy to succeed. Important content is covered each class period because you don’t meet every day.

Skipping might not hurt you early on, but the more difficult your course work becomes, the more skipping class will affect you. If you’re paying to take a class that you need to graduate, you might as well do it right the first time.

5. You are quickly presented with challenges.

Your degree isn’t an automatic ticket to suc-

cess. The years spent in college working toward a degree are a ticket to put yourself in successful positions. You’re going to meet a lot of amazing and potentially important people during your stay in Stillwater. Don’t spend all your time in your dorm room. Get out there, get involved and meet people.

The more involved you get, the more doors will open.

It’s time to move back to college for many, but for others, it is time to move to campus for the first time.

Here are some tips to make moving in for the first time a positive experience: 1. Come prepared Moving in can be chaotic, so be as prepared as possible. Know what dorm you are moving into and your room number.

Life website to make sure everything is in order.

Have a plan on how you are going to move your stuff in. You might try taking the stairs to avoid busy elevators.

Know where you can park not just for move-in day but for the semester.

Be sure to get a parking permit as soon as possible to eliminate parking tickets.

Be aware of your dorm’s rules, and try to eliminate any fire hazards.

3. Meet your neighbors You will see your neighbors frequently after moving in, so be sure to introduce yourself.

Neighbors and classmates will become more sociable throughout the semester as they get settled in. It is always helpful to have a neighbor to study with or spend time with in the dorm building.

4. Pack the essentials Stillwater has multiple shopping outlets, so if you

forget something at home, you can go buy it. Don’t feel like you have to pack absolutely everything and get it all in one trip.

Even if you did not bring a car to OSU, the university provides buses that make frequent trips to Walmart and other shopping areas around town.

5. Need help? Ask! If you are ever confused, have a question or simply need help getting your stuff upstairs, the front desk is equipped to help.

Chances are someone around you has the answer and can point you in the right direction.

If you are ever lost on campus or have problems, there is an information desk on the first floor of the Student Union.

During the first few days of classes, there are people stationed in high-traffic areas of campus to help answer your questions and make sure you know where you are going.

Relax and be confident that you have everything you need to succeed.

Taylor Watts has no siblings, but she plans to gain a multitude of sisters in college.

Watts, a general business pre-law freshman from Ripley, is participating in fall recruitment at Oklahoma State University. She and other potential new members of sororities are waking up as early as 5 a.m., talking to recruitment counselors, walking around the Greek neighborhood and visiting OSU’s 13 houses. The fast-paced events from Aug. 11-18 are collectively known as Rush Week.

“I really wanted the sisterhood that everybody’s always talking about and to meet your bridesmaids,” Watts said.

“Since my (high) school is so small, I wanted to be able to have more than two or three friends at my college.”

Potential new members, or PNMs, checked in Saturday and are staying in their dorms through Rush Week. Sunday, they took part in orientation and met with recruitment counselors known as Gamma Chis, according to the recruitment schedule. Then they went on an open-house tour of the 13 houses, stopping

at six Monday and seven Tuesday.

Recruitment is a mutual selection process, according to the 2018 Panhellenic Guide. As sororities choose which PNMs to invite back to their houses on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, PNMs decide which houses to revisit.

By Wednesday, PNMs should not have a list of more than 10 houses.

The frequent conversations with strangers push some students out of their comfort zones. Amber Vinson, a freshman from Owasso, said she is naturally shy, but she’s close to her siblings and looks forward to having a family away from home.

“Going into this was super scary because I’ve

never done anything like it,” Vinson said. “But the girls in every house have always made me feel comfortable and like I can talk to them.”

As students passed Theta Pond and hurried to their house appointments, they wore nametags with handwritten words on the backs, ranging from “loyalty” to “empathy.” Watts explained that before they started the house tours, they took a quality quiz to determine characteristics that are important to them. These qualities guide them as they search for their ideal sisterhoods.

Throughout the week, PNMs from differing backgrounds have bonded over a shared recruitment experience. On Greek

“There’s such a cultural difference down here that having a bunch of girls to help ease me into the change and help guide me through the process will be really nice,” Egan said.

As PNMs make new friends, they don’t know which members of the group will soon become their sisters.

The anticipation will end Saturday.

On Bid Day, the finale of Rush Week, PNMs will get formal invitations of sorority membership

and dash across Library Lawn to their houses.

Parents and guardians are welcome to congratulate students on Bid Day and can send flowers and gifts to chapter houses for them, according to the Panhellenic Guide.

“I think that with us constantly talking to people, it does get tiring,” Egan said. “But we have to remember it’ll pay off in the end. We just have to remember to have fun, and then you kind of forget about how tired you are.”

Moving to a new place can be stressful.

Oklahoma heat and limited Oklahoma State University parking make it difficult for the new students coming in.

That’s where the Student Union Activities Board (SUAB) comes in to help.

Wednesday, SUAB hosted a sampling of the types of events it hosts throughout the year for students.

“We are here at SUAB night, which is our openhouse night where we are hosting five events that are a reflection on each committee we have,” SUAB president Julian Thomason said. “We are trying to get these freshmen that just moved in today engaged on campus and looking for things to do on the first night here.”

The film committee hosted a movie trivia competition, and the talent committee gave students a stage to sing karaoke on, along with all the other committees setting up a tie-dye assembly line and an arts and crafts station.

The Student Union set up all of these activities so the new students could familiarize themselves with the major activity hubs on campus.

The event was a signature part of OSU’s Welcome Week for freshmen to give them a better idea of what campus life is like.

about having a signature event for the first night,” Thomason said.

“We wanted to showcase all that SUAB had to offer. We also wanted them to know there are things to do on campus so they don’t get sucked into the allure of watching Netflix in their dorms.”

Many freshmen gathered around the arts and crafts area to paint art for their dorm rooms. Freshman Brendan Pearce came to OSU for its pilot program.

“I’m from Stout Hall, and we all grouped together to come (to SUAB night),” Pearce said. “This event basically got a whole dorm out here. The involvement (with events like this) helps build communities and friendships that will last a lifetime.”

For many of the students at the event, this was their first look at many soon-tobe classmates.

“I normally do karaoke a lot, but knowing that I

am up there in the middle with no one else around me and the fact that most of the people here, I will be seeing in classes or around campus was a lot more scary than I thought it would be,” Britany Willimann, a pre-vet animal science freshman, said.

Although it might have been scary, some students saw the benefits the event offered.

“Events like this give people a chance to mingle and get outside their comfort zone,” Ryan Roark, an electrical engineering sophomore, said.

SUAB will host an exotic petting zoo beginning 6 p.m. Aug. 21 at the Student Union Plaza.

Faculty want to help, so stop in and get to know them early.

Having a favorite study spot around campus or Stillwater can help motivate you to put in the extra study hours. Maybe it’ll be in the Library, a coffee shop or even the Union. Find the place that works best for you!

Thirty years after Barry Sanders’ Heisman-winning season, he will return to his alma mater to play a key role in its homecoming celebration.

Sanders, a former running back on the Oklahoma State football team, will serve as a Homecoming 2018 grand marshal, the OSU Alumni Association announced Tuesday. His OSU FRIDAY, AUGUST 17, 2018

offensive linemen, known as the “War Pigs,” will share the title with him.

They will partake in the Sea of Orange Parade and other events, according to the Alumni Association’s press release.

The parade will take place on the morning of the Cowboy football team’s home game against Texas on Oct. 27.

Sanders tallied 42 touchdowns and averaged 238.9 yards per

game in 1988, the season he won the Heisman Trophy. The Detroit Lions drafted him in 1989, and he was a three-time MVP. “1988 was such a special year for OSU football,” Sanders said in the press release. “The fact that I get to celebrate the 30th anniversary at Homecoming with my coaches, teammates and of course our fans is very special to me.”

Malcolm Rodriguez is no stranger to having a big role.

In high school, Rodriguez was a three-sport star at Wagoner High School, winning three state football titles and two wrestling state titles. As the quarterback, he won his last 37 games and didn’t lose a single game his junior or senior year.

This fall, Rodriguez, an Oklahoma State sophomore, is preparing for his biggest role yet:

starting in the secondary for the OSU football team.

As a freshman, Rodriguez was a standout on special teams for the Cowboys. Although Rodriguez didn’t play in the first four games, he still tied for the lead in tackles on special teams with 11.

Entering fall camp, Rodriguez knew he’d established himself in the secondary after spring ball but there were still unknowns. The biggest of all was the scheme new defensive coordinator Jim Knowles brought

Rodriguez and his secondary counterparts aren’t the only ones who

have noticed Knowles wants his defensive backs to have an aggressive nature. Darrion Daniels, a senior defensive tackle from Dallas, is aware of it, too.

“I’m not even going to say he (Knowles) encourages it,” Daniels said. “He demands our safeties and corners to be more physical. Most receivers, they’re pretty boys. They don’t like being touched. You can just see the frustration in their get-offs, and you can see their frustration on film when they get touched. Our

defensive backs are getting very great at being more physical.”

Whether on the football field or on the wrestling mat, Rodriguez hasn’t struggled to be aggressive.

“I like the scheme and the setup,” Rodriguez said. I think it’s going to work out really well.”

There are more construction crew members working on the Oklahoma State soccer field than women’s soccer players practicing for their upcoming matches.

In the past year, the Cowgirls got used to the sounds of jackhammers and drills.

Although they can barely hear each other when they speak in the midst of drowning out outside noises, the Cowgirls are slowly coming together as a cohesive unit.

Amid all of the classes, meetings, and other activities on Oklahoma State University’s campus, football and basketball games stand tall as some of the most popular events for students. Fans put on every piece of orange clothing they have and band together with their peers to cheer on the Cowboys and Cowgirls to victory. It’s a spectacle to see and join, especially in the student section. As a new student, though, it’s important to be aware of the different traditions and tricks that keep one from looking like a freshman.

Here are some of the most important things to know.

Where to sit With an All-Sports Pass (which is available during orientation or the first semester), am OSU student can get into every game the university hosts. Most of the sports have general admission seating, but the football and basketball venues have specific locations for students to sit.

In football, it spans from behind the west end zone to the northwest side of Boone Pickens Stadium behind the opposing team’s bench. In Gallagher-Iba Arena, the student sections are behind eac h basket. All seats in the student section are first come, first serve.

it is important to arrive at least 15 minutes prior to doors opening. Adjust that by adding more or less time depending on the quality of opponent.

The traditions There are several traditions that take place at each game and add to the experience. For football, the Walk is where the football team walks to the stadium before each game as a sea of fans line up to cheer the Cowboys on along with the cheerleaders and band. Tailgating is also key for football. Fraternities, sororities, other campus organizations and groups of OSU fans grill, play games and have fun outside the stadium. Inside the stadium, the entrance of Pistol Pete and Bullet is always a hit, along with the pregame festivities hype man Les leads. After OSU touchdowns, the cheerleaders jog out on the field with flags that spell “O-S-U” and run in a circle on the side by the student section.

Because of the circular path, the flags spell out “O-S-U” for the first half and flip over to “U-S-O” at some point, depending on where you are in the student section. Because of this, it’s a tradition to chant “O-S-U” as the flags pass and then change the chant to “U-S-O” as the flags turn. For basketball, the main tradition takes place during the starting lineups’ announcements. There are newspapers (usually the

O’Colly) in every student section seat. When the opposing team is introduced, fans put the papers in front of their faces and shout, “Who cares?” after every player. Then while the hype-up video is played for OSU, everyone rips the papers and throws the newspaper shreds in the air after every OSU player’s introduction. There are several other traditions that take place, but these are the main ones to know.

The music To go along with the normal traditions, the music the band plays during games deserves a whole separate entry. The most important is, of course, the fight song “Ride ‘em

Cowboys,” played after every OSU touchdown at football games and during key timeouts of basketball games. Everyone claps along with it. If you don’t know the words immediately, don’t worry. It’s played enough that you’ll learn them quickly. A football-exclusive song is “The Waving Song,” also played after every Cowboy touchdown. The fans in the stands wave in unison.

Another popular song the band plays is a version of “Rock’n Roll Part 2,” to which everyone claps.

(Now that I think about it, we do a lot of clapping.)

When a certain part comes, the whole student section joins in and yells, “We’re gonna beat the hell out of you!”. Other songs such as

the Oklahoma state song and Garth Brooks’ “Friends in Low Places” are commonly heard, so know the words and sing along.

Random notes It’s hard to sum up every little thing you need to know in three categories, so here are some minor notes to keep in mind. I didn’t mention homecoming traditions for a reason. That’s a whole different animal and deserves its own article.

The OSU hype-up man Les likes to say, “Let’s get this money!” often. Just go with it. Eskimos Joe’s is packed every gameday, so avoid it unless you want to wait several hours. At the concession stands, you can use your meal plan, which

is convenient. Mike Gundy is easy to get behind with his mullet and all, but Mike Boynton has to be one of the most likable coaches in the NCAA. You’ll want to cheer loudly for both. Court storms are fun, but be aware if it is about to happen and don’t get trampled.

Know that OSU sporting events will be some of the most memorable events in your college experience.

Embrace that, and make the most of it while you can.

Welcome Back Students Students’ Rights to Privacy The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA, also referred to as the Buckley Amendment) was designed to protect the privacy of educational records, to establish the right of students to inspect and review their educational records in all offices, and to provide guidelines for the correction of inaccurate or misleading data through informal and formal hearings.

An OSU student has the right to: 1. Inspect and review information contained in his or her educational records within 45 days of the day that the University receives a written request from the student 2. Challenge the contents of the educational record.

3. Have a hearing if the outcome of a challenge is unsatisfactory.

4. Submit an explanatory statement for inclusion in the educational record, if the outcome of the hearing is unsatisfactory.

5. Secure a copy of the institutional policy, which includes the location of all educational records.

6. Prevent disclosure, with certain exceptions, of personally identifiable information from the educational record.

7. File a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education concerning alleged failures by the University to comply with the requirements of FERPA. The name and address of the office that administers FERPA is: Family Policy Compliance Office, U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Avenue, SW, Washington, D.C. 20202-5901.

Withholding Disclosure of Information Currently enrolled students may withhold disclosure of directory information. A student may file a written request with the Office of the Registrar to not release personally identifiable information, including directory information. Such requests will be honored until revoked by the student. The University assumes that failure on the part of any student to specifically request the withholding of directory information indicates individual approval for disclosure.

Access to Records Students may inspect and review their educational records by making a written request to the office that maintains the records (see Location of Records below). No non-directory information regarding students’ educational records may be disclosed to anyone without written consent of students, except for selected purposes as authorized by federal law, such as: 1. To “school officials” who have a “legitimate educational interest” in the student.

2. Upon request to another institution to which a student seeks or intends to enroll or is already enrolled if the disclosure is related to the student’s enrollment or transfer.

3. In response to a lawfully issued court order or subpoena.

4. In connection with financial aid if the information is necessary to determine aid eligibility or to enforce the conditions of the aid.

5. To accrediting organizations to carry out their accrediting functions.

6. To organizations conducting studies for or on behalf of the school in order to develop, validate, or administer predictive tests, administer student aid programs, or improve instruction.

7. To authorized representatives of the U.S. Comptroller General, the U.S. Attorney General, the U.S. Secretary of Education, and to State and local educational authorities in connection with an audit or evaluation of an education program or for compliance with Federal legal requirements related to those programs.

8. To appropriate officials in connection with a health or safety emergency.

9. Final results of certain disciplinary proceedings related to an alleged perpetrator of a crime of violence or a non-forcible sex offense.

10. To parents of a student regarding the student’s violation of any Federal, State, or local law or of any rule or policy of the school governing the use or possession of alcohol or a controlled substance if the school determines the student committed a disciplinary violation and the student is under the age of 21.

Parental Access to Records At the postsecondary level, parents have no inherent rights to inspect their son’s or daughter’s educational records. Information regarding educational records is best obtained by direct communication between the parent and the student. Students may consent to release their educational records to parents, legal guardians, or other individuals by providing access using the Proxy feature in Self Service or completing the appropriate form in the Office of the Registrar. Such consent should be given in an uncoercive environment. Parents of a dependent student may challenge denial of access to educational records by producing the most current copy of Internal Revenue Form 1040.

Definitions “Educational Record” refers to those records which are directly related to a student and are maintained by an educational institution.

“Directory Information” includes: student’s name; local and permanent address or hometown; telephone number; year of birth; major field of study; weight and height of student participating in officially recognized sports; dates of attendance at Oklahoma State University; degrees, honors, and awards granted or received and dates granted or received; academic classification such as freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, etc.; institutional electronic mail address; most recent educational institution previously attended; dissertation or thesis title; adviser or thesis/dissertation adviser; participation in officially recognized organizations, activities, and sports; parents’ names and addresses (city and state only).

“School official” is defined as an individual currently serving as a member of the Oklahoma State University Board of Regents or classified as faculty, administrative, or professional, and the staff such school officials supervise; the President and CEO of the Alumni Association and President and CEO of the Oklahoma State University Foundation and the staff they supervise; the National Student Clearinghouse; and contractors, volunteers, and other non-employees performing institutional functions as school officials with legitimate educational interests.

“Legitimate educational interest” A school official has a “legitimate educational interest” if a review of a student’s record is necessary to fulfill the official’s professional responsibilities to the University. School officials may have legitimate educational interests both in students who are currently enrolled and in those no longer enrolled.

Location of Records

Several offices share responsibility for maintaining and releasing information pertaining to student education records. These include, but are not restricted to: a. the Office of the Registrar for academic records, b. the Office of Student Judicial Affairs for disciplinary records, c. the Office of the Bursar for billing and payment records, d. the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid for scholarship and financial aid records, e. the Human Resources office and Career Services office for employment/placement records, and f. the Communications Service office for directory information.
