“America’s Greatest Homecoming” is a time for alumni and families to come celebrate the traditions of Oklahoma State University.

From residential halls to Greek life, many organizations are involved in preparing for homecoming events.

Homecoming is only six weeks away, so the Greek organizations are preparing their signature house decorations.

The decs are made of chicken wire, glue and tissue paper.

The pomping tradition began when sororities started decorating their doors. It soon spread to the residential halls and eventually to the rest of the Greek houses by 1950.

The decs placed around Greek Row are carefully made through pomping. Each student is assigned a specific number of hours to pomp every two weeks.

Each house or residential hall creates a theme for its dec.

Sydney Carver, a junior philosophy and pre-law major, said one part of the homecoming process is her favorite.

“I love the design phase,” Carver, a homecoming director, said. “Taking some random idea like ‘Cowboys ride on’ and making it into a specific dec that truly tells a story is so unique.”

ty can see all the decs students designed.

Houses broke ground for their decs Sept. 6. Members of the houses gathered to watch the event because it’s a big milestone in the pomping process. Students can put up the screens of chicken wire once ground is broken on the decs.

MacKenzie Lawson, a former Big Committee member for Promotional Design, said

she loved the opportunity to get a behind-the-scenes look.

“Homecoming is such a big event that brings all Cowboys together,” Lawson said. “Being able to see it on both sides is definitely the most fascinating part.”

The pomping rooms in each fraternity house are open every day from 8 a.m. to midnight except on game days.

Students can go in any time of

the day to get their assigned hours. There is at least one person present at all times in the pomping room.

Mady Hendryx, a sophomore music major and member of Phi Mu sorority, said time management is key during the process.

“It’s kind of hard since you have to budget your time already with extracurricular activities and school,” Hendryx said. “With pomping and the required hours, you have to set aside more time.”

Numerous hours are devoted to pomping to complete the decs, especially during All-Night Pomp.

All-Night Pomp, the Thursday before Walkaround, is when pomping rooms are open 24/7 for students to get the screens finished and

placed on the decs. Students are required to sign up for seven-hour shifts.

Pomping might not sound like the most pleasant time to everyone, but Hendryx said the fulfilling feeling of having a dec on display for thousands of people to see is what makes it worthwhile.

“At the end of the day, pomping goes toward a great piece of art that will be displayed at homecoming,” Hendryx said. “You realize that it’s not about us at that point, it’s about the thousands of people who come to celebrate such an amazing tradition.”

OSUPD responds to alcohol sales in Boone Pickens Stadium e lli e m elero staff reporter @ e lean o r _m el er o

This past spring, Oklahoma State University allowed vendors to sell beer at baseball and softball games.

This fall, beer sales started in Boone Pickens Stadium.

The addition to OSU sporting events has resulted in some changes regarding the way alcohol consumption rules are enforced on campus.

In August, OSU Prevention Programs announced the university would have a zero-tolerance policy toward underage drinking and improper alcohol use. OSU Police Department said it wouldn’t have leniency on game days.

In the past, OSUPD bike officers have patrolled tailgate areas to ensure people were consuming alcohol responsibly. This year, OSUPD added to those patrols inside and outside the stadium.

The police department has also been trying to have a more proactive role in making sure groups with tailgates are aware of Oklahoma’s social-host laws. The groups must register their tailgates, providing OSU Athletics with a point of contact to ensure that people understand the expectations surrounding alcohol consumption.

In addition to the patrols, there are new rules that have been implemented in the stadium. One of these is the no re-entry policy.

OSU Police, said the no re-entry policy has helped increase security and make sure alcohol consumption during the games stays regulated. “(The no re-entry policy) was a big plus for us,” Jones said. “We think that it’s great that people are staying in the games and enjoying the games more than going out and trying to drink as much as you can before coming back.”

The beer sales during the games are also regulated.

Along with checking IDs, vendors have been trained to spot overly intoxicated people and know when to cut them off. There are officers stationed near all of the beer vendors, so if any issues arise, police are there to help.

One question that concerns many people is how the police and stadium staff are ensuring that alcohol is staying out of the hands of underage drinkers. Customers are allowed to buy two beers at a time, so the vendors have no way of regulating who consumes the alcohol.

Jones said officers patrol the stadium and scan crowds for underage drinkers, but they mainly rely on fans to notify them of suspicious activity. There is a new “game day” button on the Orange Shield app that allows people to report underage drinking and excessive intoxication to the police.

sporting events.

Allison Wilton, an agribusiness junior, said she thinks it’s smart to sell alcohol in the stadium where people can regulate it. She also said the no re-entry policy was a wise decision.

“I think (the rules are being enforced) pretty well,” Wilton said. “There are EMTs and event staff and police that are constantly patrolling, but I do still think that there are some who are minors that still get alcohol, though.”

Jones said thinks the patrols and extra precautions are working. The number of alcohol-related arrests made inside the stadium during the first three games has gone up from five last year to nine this year. Outside the sta-

dium, arrests have increased from three last year to 11 this year. These numbers include cite-and-releases from underage individuals in possession.

“Right now, everything is going really well,” Jones said. “I’ll always say we have a great group of fans here at OSU, and for the most part everybody always follows the rules and regulations.

We’re out there to make sure that people continue to have fun but also gain compliance from the people who aren’t following the rules.”

Paul Feig’s new film “A Simple Favor” comes with laughs, and it’s one of the most fun thrillers in recent memory.

This Darcey Bell novel adaptation is witty, sexy and deceitful at the same time. It offers an interesting cast and several twists throughout the film.

The flick features well-known actresses Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively. Kendrick plays Stephanie, a full time mother who runs a blog that shares all

types of life hacks and recipes displayed on many moms’ Facebook feeds. Stephanie goes the extra mile for everything involving her children.

The movie starts when we learn Stephanie’s son, who is too young to let his mom’s dependent personality annoy him, has a new best friend.

Soon, Stephanie becomes best friends with Emily, the mom of her son’s friend.

Stephanie and Emily serve as foils to each other. Emily is harsh, beautiful, sensual and rich.

She also has a husband the other mothers drool over. When Stephanie’s

but blend them into a cohesive film.

These roles are perfectly made for Kendrick and Lively. Whenever they share the screen, the film hits its brightest spots. The duo is so unique that this could open the door for another collaboration. Their characters evolve as the film progresses in ways that are surprising.

Feig is becoming a fine director. Throughout time, he has earned a reputation for comedyaction films such as “Spy,” “The Heat” and “Ghostbusters,” which are solid films but suffer from the same problem.

“A Simple Favor” is far from Feig’s usual movies that have thin plots and low stakes.

From the start of the film, the dialogue, mannerisms and sneaky camera tricks are important to study to predict what will happen. Despite this, “A Simple Favor” is better to enjoy with an unassuming mind.

Fans will have fun with this one and talk about it long after the credits roll.

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy provided some insight into the Cowboys’ quarterback situation at his weekly press luncheon Monday.

Although Dru Brown, a senior graduate transfer from Hawaii, hasn’t seen the field in a game this season, he was named OSU’s backup quarterback.

“He is the backup quarterback, and he is getting those reps,” Gundy said. “That’s been going on for a number of weeks, and

every day he looks better and gets a little bit more adjusted to our system.”

Gundy named fifthyear senior Taylor Cornelius the starter in fall camp but evaded clarity when he discussed the roles of backups Brown, Spencer Sanders and Keondre Wudtee through the first three weeks of the season.

Wudtee, a 6-foot-4 redshirt sophomore, handled garbage-time duties when OSU’s first two contests turned to blowouts.

“We had to run him too much this week,” Gundy said. “That’s not

something we want to do. Based on what happened, it was there, so we used it.

“We don’t want him to carry the ball that many times. We don’t want him to take those hits.”

Gundy hinted at the possibility that Cowboy punter Zach Sinor could return before the Boise State game last week, but when Saturday arrived, redshirt senior Matt Hockett handled punting duties for the third time this season.

Sinor, a redshirt senior, underwent hernia surgery Aug. 7 and missed the first three games of the year.

“I mean, he’s fine,” Gundy said. “I asked him yesterday if he was still a college football player, and he said, ‘Yes.’ I said, ‘Then you

need to punt.’”

Hockett was still listed as the starting punter on the OSU depth chart as of Monday morning, but Gundy left no doubt regarding his expectation for Sinor to appear on the field against Texas Tech.

“He punted yesterday,” Gundy said. “He punted last week. So I’m anticipating him being out there. He’s been punting in practice.”

Country music has been flourishing during the past few years thanks to a strong veteran presence combined with exciting newcomers such as Luke Combs.

Despite this, there was someone missing in recent country music, and that someone was Carrie Underwood.

Underwood, winner of American Idol Season 4, dropped her first album in three years Friday with the release of “Cry Pretty.” This newest album looks to pack a little more firepower than “Storyteller” and gives out vibes that listeners haven’t felt since her 2009 release of “Play On.” “Cry Pretty” might not be better or even as good as “Play On,” but her songs offer a subtle, edgy feeling not seen from her in a while.

To highlight some specific songs from her newest album, it is best to start with “Love Wins.”

“Love Wins” is an uplifting song with a deep and real connection. Underwood puts certain issues such as gun violence and the clear divide of political parties on blast as she tries to convey love as the only answer to all the
