Students who tried their luck at The Strip after Bedlam on Saturday night faced long lines.

With some wait times of more than an hour on Washington Street, The Storm Cellar provided solace from the tried and true lines stretching the strip.

Having opened earlier this fall, The Storm Cellar is situated behind Coney Island and brags the only rooftop bar on The Strip. Shortly after taking ownership of Coney Island, Gary and Claudia Humphreys decided the

bar scene in Stillwater needed to up its game.

They hoped that the opening of a new bar, decked out with rooftop seating, a fire pit and wine selection (along with the usual bar selection), would raise the bar.

Seated in the downstairs portion of The Storm Cellar, owner Claudia Humphreys spoke about their vision in expanding Coney Island to The Storm Cellar.

“We’ve been to all the away games for the last 10 years, and every other college town has an area that is family-friendly and appealing to go to,” Humphreys said. “It was time to bring it up to the

next level.”

The Storm Cellar achieves the quality, attractive vibe the Humphreys envisioned. Sparkling clean and covered in OSU sports memorabilia, the bar is far from the dimly-lit, sticky-floored norm. Accessible from a sidewalk bordering Coney Island, The Storm Cellar is double-tiered with an indoor bar and an outdoor seating area that leads up to the rooftop patio.

Seeing as The Storm Cellar is part of Coney Island, the bar also has full access to Coney Island’s menu, so customers can order chili cheese fries straight from bar. They are also dog-friendly and

open to all ages.

“Because we serve food, we’re not a 21 and up bar,” Humphreys said.

This means families with kids and 21-yearolds who don’t want to ditch their freshmen friends for the bars can hang out a while longer.

Patrons can sit beside the fire, drink, play corn hole, eat Coney food, hang out inside or check out The Strip from the rooftop seating.

“Our prices set us apart, our variety sets us apart,” Humphreys said.

The Storm Cellar also has deal nights such as “Wine Down Wednesday” and “Truly Thirsty Thursdays” when wine

and Truly prices are even cheaper. Every night, shots are $3 a piece.

Loyal and true to OSU, the Humphreys are third generation Cowboys and are excited to have a part in upping Stillwater’s game. They don’t plan to stop now.

“We just started in September, but we still have plans,” Humphreys said.

After working with OSU, they were able to put in a sidewalk running from The Strip to Ramsey Street near the Fourth Avenue Garage. Along the sidewalk and behind The Storm Cellar, they’re hoping to put in some turf and tailgate-style games.

They’d also love to up the OSU spirit even more with the help of some talented student artists.

“I would love to get with the art department and have them paint this sidewalk,” Humphreys said. “I’d love a massive mural up and down the sidewalk.”

With the regular football season officially in the books and the semester winding down, only two weeks stand between students and winter break.

As dead week commences and graduating seniors face their last weekend as students in Stillwater, The Storm Cellar offers freshfaced solace from the tyranny of final projects.

The Salty Bronc: a fresh face on Washington Street

The Salty Bronc is a new bar near campus on The Strip that provides another bright stop for anyone seeking a retreat. Capitalizing on the western, red dirt vibes of Stillwater, the bar is true to Oklahoma country.

Officially called The Salty Bronc Saloon, the bar opened in August and is working on building a culture of live country music. The atmosphere, employees and events offer plenty to visitors.

The bar is well lit with a layout that accommodates casual drinkers or larger crowds stopping by for the music. The décor mixes old fashioned saloons with modern touches. Quality images of artists such as Willie Nelson adorn the walls. and a cozy stage is nestled on one side of the room with a chandelier dangling overhead.

The bartenders, including Nash Jackson, extend a friendly energy while whipping up beverages. Jackson said he enjoys working at the Salty Bronc and is

educated on his drinks and bar activities.

During the week, The Salty Bronc can be a relaxing place to grab a quick drink. Tuesdays are “Singo” nights, which is like Bingo with but with music.

On Fridays and Saturdays, expect country artists to be performing. The Salty Bronc offers a wide range of live performances.

“It’s some local people and some people that are pretty famous,” Jackson said.

“Like The Great Divide plays, and we had Lee Riley.”

The Salty Bronc is a clean bar to visit, and as one visitor said, “a good bar to start the night with.”

But no bar would be complete without a good drink.

“I’d say our most popular drink is probably one of our $2 Tall Boys,” Jackson said.

“But our specialty drink is definitely the Pour Me A Vacation.

It’s probably our most popular.”

A vacation sounds perfect.

The holiday season is here, which means now is the time to start watching Christmas movies.

There are a variety of movies to choose from this season that will get everyone ready for the most wonderful time of the year. If you are interested in watching a romantic comedy, then you should go with “The Holiday,” a 2006 film that Nancy Meyers wrote and directed.

The cast includes Kate Winslet, Cameron Diaz, Jude Law and Jack Black.

Winslet and Diaz switch homes during the holiday season, and they each meet a man during the swap and fall in love.

“The Holiday” has a great soundtrack and plot, is funny yet heartwarming and includes great characters.

If the ideal movie is a family film, then the right choice might be the “Home Alone” series.

“Home Alone” one and two are directed by Chris Columbus and written by John Hughes. The cast includes Macaulay Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern and Catherine O’Hara.

Both films are centered around Kevin McCallister’s (Culkin) family going out of town for the holiday season, but somehow Kevin does not end up with them. In the first film.

The memory of Tyreek Hill’s punt return seems like it was decades ago.

The Sooners tallied another Bedlam victory, their fifth in a row, on Saturday, repeating a scenario we have become so accustomed to seeing in the recent history of the matchup.

The Oklahoma State football team kept the score close for most of the game and sat within striking distance, but it could never quite catch up with Oklahoma in the Sooners’ 34-16 Bedlam victory at Boone Pickens Stadium.

Hill’s 2014 punt return seems like a distant memory, and the memory of Brandon Weeden slinging the ball around on OU’s defense in 2011, which was the last time OSU defeated the Sooners in Stillwater, seems like a lifetime ago.

It was before this year’s seniors played for the Cowboys. It was before the addition of the gargantuan Gary and Claudia Humphreys video board that now hangs over the east end zone of the stadium. It was long before the passing of T. Boone Pickens, whose donations propelled OSU’s expectations to new heights, which is

what makes the annual loss to the Sooners that much more disappointing for Cowboy fans.

This one was not out of reach.

Jalen Hurts did not have his Heismanclinching performance like Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray had in the previous two years of this matchup.

In fact, this was probably the most average-looking Sooner team to touch the turf for a Bedlam matchup in recent history, but their offense operated like it had control of the game, which it did.

The Cowboys operated like they were scared to lose.

OU’s play calls always seemed to be spot on, and the Sooners’ actual offensive execution of those play calls was sensational.

Whether it was quarterback Jalen Hurts scrambling his way to the first down marker as OSU tried to contain him or running back Kennedy Brooks barreling through the line of scrimmage on his way to 160 rushing yards, the Sooners seemed to always be one step ahead of the defense.

On the other hand, OSU’s play calls seemed unsettled at times, with weirdlytimed runs called on third-and-long and constant rollout passes

to the short side of the field that were thrown short of the first down marker on third-andmanageable.

OSU infamously “played not to lose” Saturday, which Cowboy fans will say is a Bedlam tradition, but the problem was that the Pokes were already losing, as the Sooners jumped out to a 7-0 lead fewer than two minutes into the game and never trailed.

“You can’t kick field goals against an offense that can score like they can,” said OSU coach Mike Gundy. “They are a good football team, we lost the turnover battle, didn’t stop the rush and kicked too many field goals. In the end that’s what it comes down to.”

The Sooners positioned their safeties down into the tackle box on defense in an attempt to control Cowboy running back Chuba Hubbard, and it worked to a degree.

Hubbard still rushed for over 100 yards for the 10th consecutive game, but a few shoestring tackles narrowly prevented Hubbard from breaking free for one of his signature big runs that have bolstered his Heisman Trophy campaign.

OU’s commitment to stopping the run hindered OSU’s offensive production.

The Cowboys couldn’t find the end zone again after Hubbard rushed for a touchdown in OSU’s opening offensive drive in the first quarter, which paved the way for the lowest scoring Bedlam game since the Sooners shut out the Cowboys 27-0 in 2009, and the first time since then that OU held OSU under 20 points.

“It’s a disappointing loss because I just didn’t feel like we played as good as we could’ve,” Gundy said. “Let me say this, coaches and players. I

didn’t think we performed as good as we could have, coaches and players. But we did lose to a good football team.

“We should have played better, and we should have coached better, in my opinion.”

The Cowboys have lost five straight to the Sooners, who will prepare to play Baylor for a Big 12 Championship while the Pokes take some time to rest their guys, especially their star running back, and rally back for bowl game preparation.

Riley now has more Bedlam wins than Mike Gundy, though Riley has been OU’s coach for three seasons while Gundy is finishing up his 14th season at OSU’s helm.

For OSU fans, the Bedlam losses re-energize the same sense of frustration every year.

Yes, of course OU is a tremendous football team. One of the best in the nation. But, the bottom line for the Cowboys is, as OSU defensive coordinator Jim Knowles said, “We didn’t get the job done.”

Oklahoma State students will have no Fall Break next year, but they will have a full week for Thanksgiving Break.

There are a few disappointments Oklahoma State students experience in the fall: overcrowded parking lots, the inconsistency of Cowboy football and the odd Fall Break/ Thanksgiving Break schedule.

One of these letdowns is about to be fixed.

In April 2018, OSU’s Student Government Association voted to eliminate Fall Break and make Thanksgiving Break a whole week.

“It was intended to go into effect this school year, but with administrative things and whatnot, it will start next year,” said Kristen Ball, SGA’s vice president.

The bill addresses issues with the Fall Break/ Thanksgiving Break schedule and encompasses the thoughts many students

have about it.

“Students traveling home for Thanksgiving must either miss classes on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving or drive through the night to reach their destinations,” the bill states. “Many professors cancel classes on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving due to a history of high rates of absentia on that day.”

The bill also states what other Big 12 schools do for their Fall Break/Thanksgiving schedules.

Iowa State University, Kansas State University and West Virginia University give their students a week for Thanksgiving Break.

Other universities such as Texas Christian University and the University of Kansas are similar to OSU, giving their students Wednesday of Thanksgiving week off and resuming classes the Monday after Thanksgiving. These uni-

versities let their students have two to three days off for Fall Break.

The resolution to permanently eliminate Fall Break also states issues with OSU’s current system.

“The current time allotted for ‘Fall Break’ does not provide out-of-state students with adequate time to return home and recover from the stresses of academia,” it reads.

Iowa State, Kansas State, Texas Tech, the University of Oklahoma and the University of TexasAustin have no Fall Break.

To Heather Howard, a business management student, OSU’s changes “make a lot of sense.”

“Fall break never seemed long enough and didn’t give me enough time to go home,” Howard said. “As an out-of-state student, a full week allows me to enjoy my time at home instead of spending the majority of the time traveling.”
