Players filed one-by-one out of the locker room at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium and onto the field to begin another day of preparation for the upcoming season.

This season is different from past seasons for the Oklahoma State baseball team. It is the 39th and final season the Cowboys will play at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.

At Washington Street and McElroy Road, a large, steel structure sits. O’Brate Stadium, named after Cecil O’Brate, who donated $35 million to the project, will open in 2020 and be the new home of the Cowboys.

said he has enjoyed seeing the changes to the new ballpark, even driving by it as many as three times a day during winter break.

“The construction on the ballpark has been something fun to follow,” Holliday said.

“It is one of those things coming to work and going home at night, you peek at it because it is exciting. It is just one of the things going on, but it certainly doesn’t change your focus from what you’re trying to do now. It’s exciting to see that thing go up, my gosh, to see images and drawings then to see it take shape it is fascinating.”

“Anybody that has come to campus since last March that’s seen the site and the activity, the shape and some of the structures now, it’s real,” Holliday said. “For kids that’re considering where they’re going to go to school in the very near future, that’s a big part of them seeing themselves here and envisioning the space they’ll train in and locker in. The place they’ll work on their swing in and play in front of great fans in and that they’ll ultimately have a great college experience in.”

play the last season at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium and the first season at O’Brate Stadium. He said OSU was his best option out of high school, and at that time they weren’t using the new stadium as a recruiting tool.

“Oh, that’s huge,” McCusker said. “As big as it gets honestly. That’s gonna draw players from all across the country cause that’s gonna be the best facility in college baseball.”

O’Brate Stadium has many amenities, including a 7,400-square-foot locker room and player lounge. The operations center will have a sports medicine area, along with a weight room and even lockers for former players to use when they come back to train.

Joe Lienhard, a junior pitcher, said O’Brate Stadium will be a key recruiting tool.

Josh (Holliday) and James (Vilade), it’s gonna be huge for them to be able to pull in big recruits,” Lienhard said.

“Oklahoma State’s always a well-known program, but when you look at some of those others schools and you go on visits and you see the cool locker rooms and all these other amenities, it is something special. Now that we’re going to have probably the top in the country, I think that’s going to be huge for them. They’ve always brought in quality players, but I really think they’re going to be able to compete with the best of the best.”

Holliday said even with the new stadium, and it being the final season at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium, his team’s mindset is no different this year. He said he only knows one way to build a team, and that is what he and his coaching staff will do.

That doesn’t harness his excitement for the new stadium, or the future of the program, however.

“Everyone wants to be a part of something special,” Holliday said. “I don’t know of anyone that says, ‘I wanna have an average experience.’ I wanna have a big-time experience. That’s what everybody wants. That’s exciting because I think kids can look at that and say that’s a pretty huge investment in our sport on behalf of our University by some amazing people. It means baseball is a big deal here.”

Josh Holliday has witnessed how a newcomer can quickly make a difference in the Oklahoma State baseball team’s infield.

Matt Kroon transferred from Central Arizona College to play for the Cowboys during their 2018 season. After earning a consistent role at shortstop and leading OSU in multiple categories, including runs (55) and hits (65), Kroon received Big 12 Newcomer of the Year honors.

Kroon left OSU to join the Philadelphia Phillies organization, but Holliday, the Cowboys’ coach, said new players will likely gain experience in the infield and at catcher.

“We’re definitely not a team that, going into this point in time, has a hard, fixed lineup,” Holliday said. “Some years, you may have that; some years, you may not, and this is a year where there’s still tremendous opportunities for guys to have a great day and build on it.”

Catcher Colin Simpson is returning for his senior season, but he isn’t the only option at catcher.

Bryce Carter is a graduate transfer from Stanford. Holliday said he and pitching coach Rob Walton recruited Carter when he went to high school at Tulsa Cascia Hall. After earning a degree from Stanford, Carter told Holliday he wanted to spend his last year of eligibility at OSU. “I think he feels like he has a lot to prove on the field this year because I think he feels FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2019

like his best baseball is yet to be played at the college level,” Holliday said. “It was just a great time for a kid with his background and maturity to join our program.”

Although Simpson has had success as a catcher, he is versatile. Holliday said Simpson, a preseason All-American and All-Big 12 player, has practiced at left field. If Simpson moves to the outfield, Carter could have consistent opportunities as a catcher.

First base Christian Funk’s position in the infield could shift.

Funk, a senior from Fresno, California, started 53 games at first base in 2018.

Holliday said Funk is practicing at first and third base.

Although he said Funk will spend a lot of time at first, Jake Taylor could fill that position if Funk moves to third.

Taylor, a sophomore from Shawnee, played catcher and designated hitter in 2018. Holliday said May 19 that Taylor, along with infielder Cameron Dobbs, would not be on the team for the rest of the season.

Although Dobbs isn’t on the roster, Taylor returned for 2019.

Holliday said Alix Garcia also is practicing at first. Garcia came to OSU from Central Arizona College, where he was Kroon’s teammate.

Second base Ryan Cash, who often started at second base in 2018, transferred to Oral Roberts University.

A sophomore from Stillwater or a new Cowboy could take his place.

Dylan Gardner, a former AllState player at Stillwater High School, started three games at second base and had seven RBIs last season.

Andrew Navigato gives Holliday another choice. A junior from Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, California, Navigato batted .387 with six home runs in 2018.

Michael Neustifter, who settled into a starting role at third base in 2018, transferred

to North Greenville University in South Carolina.

Funk might fill his spot sometimes, or Cross Factor, a sophomore transfer from Cowley County Community College, could have opportunities at third. Factor had nine home runs and a .374 batting average during his freshman season.

Max Hewitt is another option. A junior from Ontario, Canada, Hewitt started four games at second base and five at shortstop in 2018.

Hueston Morrill, from Live Oak, Florida, was a standout hitter and pitcher at Suwannee High School.

“He gets on base a lot,” Holliday said. “Got a great throwing arm. He’s definitely in the mix at shortstop.”

Holliday said Hewitt is also getting time at shortstop.

“Those two guys give us a good competition at shortstop,” Holliday said.

As Holliday tinkers with his infield lineup, stories like Kroon’s remind him that any of his players could emerge as

leaders.

“No one really knew where Matty would be last year at this time,” Holliday said. “He blossomed and had a great year, so we gotta continue to just believe in these kids and give them their opportunities; and I’m confident that guys will take those opportunities and run with them.”

It doesn’t take much searching to find a strength of this year’s Oklahoma State baseball team.

The Cowboys have to replace players at key spots, including shortstop and third base. They don’t have that problem in the outfield.

OSU returns three players with experience, including two starters.

Trevor Boone, Carson McCusker and Cade Cabbiness will roam the outfield.

Among the three, they started 105 games and had 409 plate appearances last season.

Boone and McCusker had 88 of those starts. Cabbiness struggled to crack

the lineup because Jon Littell, a senior who was drafted by the Los Angeles Dodgers, started in left field.

OSU coach Josh Holliday had high praise for his outfielders, saying how nice it is to have key players back.

Size won’t be an issue for this unit. Boone is the smallest of the group at 6 feet 2. McCusker towers over the other two at 6-8, and Cabbiness is 6-4 and weighs 223 pounds.

“I’ve never seen a uniform that Cade Cabbiness or Carson McCusker tries on that doesn’t look great with how those guys are built,” Holliday said.

Holliday said a big key for all three players is to believe in themselves and their abilities.

“I think if they can do that, all three of those kids

have tremendous physical potential,” Holliday said. “I think we run the ball down awfully well in the outfield with those guys. They’re very physical, strong kids.

So much of this game is mental, the mental side, a belief in yourself that you’ll be successful and that you’re working on the right things to be successful. I think those kids know that now. The big step will be just getting them out there and taking a deep breath, relaxing and then letting the game come to them rather than forcing things.”

The Cowboys advanced to the College World Series seven times in a decade, but they traveled to Omaha, Nebraska, before the glory days of the 1980s. They have competed in the CWS 20 times, the fifth-most in the FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2019

The last year on the wall is 2016, but the Cowboys are aiming to change that.

As Josh Holliday, OSU’s coach, sat in the indoor facility, he enthusiastically talked about changes. OSU is entering its last season at historic Allie P. Reynolds Stadium. O’Brate Stadium, set to open in 2020, is under construction. Holliday welcomes the transformations, but he doesn’t want everything to become different. He is striving for his team to maintain the values and leadership traits of the players who have carried the Cowboys to the CWS. “You hear it referred to as, ‘The DNA is in the

locker room; the knowhow is in there,’” Holliday said. “And you want to make sure that it never goes a generation without getting passed on.”

OSU will open the 2019 season when it travels to Edinburg, Texas, for a three-game series against University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley. The first game starts 7 p.m. Friday.

Most of the Cowboys from the 2016 CWS squad have left Stillwater, but four remain on OSU’s roster.

Catcher/outfielder Colin Simpson and pitchers Jensen Elliott, Joe Lienhard and Ben Leeper have traveled the road to Omaha. It wasn’t smooth, but it taught them valuable

lessons.

In 2016, the Cowboys started the season 2-5, losing every game against North Carolina in their first three-game series.

“It wasn’t a great start to the year, but what we talked about is how that start to the season taught us how the last month is gonna go, how big of a grind it’s gonna be,” Simpson said. “And I think that if we weren’t that tough and that tight together as a team, that we wouldn’t have made it through that season the way we did.”

Elliott, a junior righthanded pitcher from Coppell, Texas, said he finds inspiration in the leadership Donnie Walton and

Corey Hassel, then seniors, brought to the 2016 team.

“We’re just trying to reflect that,” Elliott said.

“And I think if we all put it all together, we’ll get back there.”

In 2017 and 2018, OSU advanced to NCAA regionals but was eliminated before super regionals. As the Cowboys try to recreate the magic of the 2016 season, they are figuring out how a slew of freshmen and transfers will mesh with returners.

“How quickly we can bring those groups together and get guys playing at the peak of their game is the challenge in front of us,” Holliday said.

Simpson, a senior,

acknowledged that it will take more than on-field skill to add another year to the Cowboys’ long list of CWS seasons.

“It’s kind of something that just happens,” Simpson said. “It’s the chemistry of the team. It’s everybody hanging out with everybody. You can’t separate and form cliques.

“I think everybody’s kind of bought in on the same thing, which is what everybody’s goal is.”

The Little Coonhound That Could Thanks to OSU’s veterinary hospital, Milo’s paws are now facing the right way

His upside-down paws turned rightside up, Milo the coonhound puppy is back home in Luther, Oklahoma.

At just 7 weeks, Milo came to Oklahoma State University’s Veterinary Medical Hospital with a congenital dislocation of his elbow joints.

Associate professor of surgery and bioethics Dr. Erik Clary and his team realigned Milo’s front elbows, placing pins across each joint for temporary stability and putting the pup in a front body splint for 2.5 weeks.

His story — and especially his photos — went viral.

“He has become quite the celebrity,” Clary noted. Media outlets around the world have spread Milo’s story.

The splints came off recently, and the pins were removed. With his elbow alignment holding steady, Milo began working with a rehabilitative therapy team led by Dr. Cara Blake to improve his joint function, strengthen his limbs and teach him how to walk correctly.

“With this next phase of treatment, there is much work to do and the outcome is still uncertain,” Clary said. “Likely, it will be months before we can judge the final result. For now, it is only stilted ‘baby steps’ with assistance. For a dog that couldn’t walk, that’s certainly progress, but we hope for more in the weeks ahead.”

Milo’s condition is very rare. In his 27 years of doing surgery, Clary said he has seen only three patients like this.

“It has been a privilege to serve Milo and his caretaker, Jennie Hays of Oliver and Friends Farm Rescue and Sanctuary,” Clary said. “Milo is a wonderful creature who has touched many lives. He has also helped us educate a wide audience on the condition and its treatment possibilities.”

Hospital Director Dr. Jeff Studer noted, “Milo’s care offers a great example of the level of care available to our pets today. The collaborative effort of Milo’s family veterinarian and our team of boardcertified specialists and nurses in veterinary surgery, radiology, anesthesia and rehabilitative therapy is shaping the future, not only for Milo, but for all of veterinary medicine.”

A tall forest of trees, also known as the Oklahoma State baseball team pitching rotation, is ready to make its mark on college baseball.

Of the four Cowboys who can make an impact in coach Josh Holliday’s starting rotation, each are 6 feet 5 or taller.

Starting off with the veteran of the team, Joe Leinhard is going to be a big part of the Cowboys’ rotation. A 6-5 senior from Wichita, Kansas, Leinhard was named as an honorable All-Big 12 last season after going 5-3 with a save.

Leinhard, along with junior Jensen Elliot, are going to be the backbone of the pitching rotation.

With the numerous freshman and transfers in this year’s lineup, Leinhard will be the one to step up as a team leader.

With the loss of Carson Teel and Jonathan Heasley to the MLB, Leinhard will see more playing time on the mound this season.

Next on the list is Jensen Elliot, a 6-6 junior who has had a rough time making a name for himself on the Cowboys.

In 2017, Jensen only played four games before needing Tommy John surgery, which left him out of the rest of the 2017 season and only played four games in 2018.

Jensen, however, feels he is primed and ready to get back on the mound this season.

“This is the strongest I’ve ever felt,” Elliot said. “I had a pretty good summer and then I came back here this fall to continue to get stronger with our new strength coach.

Honestly, my body feels great. I’m just excited to attack this season.”

Last summer, Jensen got some experience in the Cape Cod Baseball League playing for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. Jensen finished the season with a 4-1 record and 3.37 earned run average. He even got a victory against Leinhard’s team, the Chatham Anglers.

Back on the roster, better than ever, Jensen will be one of the centerpieces of the Cowboys if they want to make it to the postseason.

Coach Holliday is especially excited to see the next player, Logan Gragg, take the mound this season.

Gragg spent his last two seasons at Connors State, a junior college and perennial powerhouse.

A 6-foot-6 junior, Gragg will be an early part of the rotation this year after what Holliday has seen from him in practice.

“First of all, he’s exciting because there’s an old fashion work ethic and an honesty about

him that every single day you’re around him, you know exactly what you’re going to get,” Holliday said.

Holliday also stated that Gragg’s fastball is in the low to mid-90s, has a great changeup and has been working on a pretty good slider ever since stepping into OSU. Similar to Jensen, Gragg had Tommy John surgery after his freshman year where he went 11-2 with a 2.50 ERA. In his second season with Connors State, Gragg was perfect on the

season going 6-0 with a 2.06 ERA. He will make an early impact to the Cowboys’ roster.

Last, but not least, is the giant of the group, Mitchell Stone.

Stone, a 6-foot-9 redshirt-freshman from Edmond, is coming off a season-ending foot injury after only making two starts for the Cowboys.

A former under-18 USA Baseball team member, Stone has learned a lot from older and former members of the team, including

Carson Teel.

“Every guy that went to pitch and went up to the mound, I was able to observe and learn from,” Stone said. “Carson Teel, he had a great year last year and watching him do what he did against OU, it’s definitely something I would like to do one day. Just all those mental reps will come in handy.”

With more practice and getting back to 100 percent for the upcoming season, Stone should make a splash on the team.

In rank by class for pitching, OSU has one senior, eight juniors, two sophomores and five freshmen.

A great mix of veterans and newcomers for the Cowboys will be ready to take the mound on Friday when the Cowboys travel to face University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley.

A suspected car burglar is in custody after a group of citizens who saw him breaking into cars followed him and detained him until police arrived.

A man at the apartments near 2900 N. Perkins Road had stepped outside for a smoke when he saw Trentin Eli Neely, 20, digging through a car, according to police reports. At first he didn’t think anything of it, the witness told police.

ing to get into another vehicle, the witness he yelled at Neely and asked him what he was doing. When Neely ran off, the witness got the owner of the car and followed.

They were joined by a group of people who also claimed to have seen Neely breaking into cars.

The witness told police the group confronted Neely near a gas station in the area.

When Neely tried to run, they grabbed his backpack, pulled him to the ground and held him there until police arrived.

When Stillwater police officers arrived to the call of a disturbance at the gas station, they found Neely on his stomach with a group of people standing around him. After asking permission to search Neely’s backpack, they found several items stolen from the cars at the apartment complex, a box of syringes and a bottle containing methamphetamine residue.

The officers arrested Neely on charges of third degree burglary and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Capt. Kyle Gibbs of the Stillwater Police

Department said this kind of activism is extremely rare.

“I cannot remember the last time I heard about this,” Gibbs said.

In Oklahoma, it is legal to make a citizen’s arrest. If you see a person committing a felony or have “reasonable cause” for believe that the person has committed a felony, you can detain that person and turn them over to police. It’s even legal to use reasonable force to detain a suspect if they ignore verbal commands, Gibbs said.

But Gibbs doesn’t encourage it.

“While it was legally okay, tactically it may have been a little bit unsound,” Gibbs said.

Gibbs said it’s impossible to know if a suspect of a crime is armed, or if they are going to become violent when you try to detain them.

“It’s a huge, huge risk when you go to detain a suspect of a crime,” Gibbs said.

Instead, Gibbs encourages people who see a crime being committed to attempt to interrupt the crime – by yelling, perhaps – and then keep an eye on the suspect until the police

arrive.

“Nothing in your car is worth risking your life for,” Gibbs said.

In this case, everything worked out perfectly, Gibbs said. He commended the citizens involved, who were, as he said, “neighbors looking out for neighbors.”

Neely had his first court appearance on Feb. 8. Bond was set at $10,000.
