Fires have caused deaths on college campuses across the country for decades, but OSU is trying to spread fire safety awareness.

“The largest issues that students will come across in off-campus housing is the lack of smoke detectors and fire extinguishers in off-campus residential housing;” said Kukuk.

“OSU EHS (Environmental Health and Safety) and the university fire marshal have done a great job conducting inspections to make sure that we have those things in place for our on-campus housing.”

If students live in an off-campus home that does not have a smoke detector or a fire extinguisher, they can contact their landlord or property owner to get them. Even with smoke detectors and fire extinguishers, students should

still take certain precautions such as watching where they place items in a garage and choosing whether to keep or discard items.

“Always be vigilant with what you’re doing around your house and where you place things,” Whitlock said. “Also, don’t leave a lot of fuel in one area because we don’t need it all going off at once.”

With all these precautions, fires will still take place, and people will need to know what to do.

“First off, my biggest recommendation is that students make themselves aware of their evacuation route and exit locations,” Kukuk said. “This can go for anywhere they may frequent, on or off campus.

maintaining situational awareness of electrical and chemical safety procedures will help mitigate risks for fire safety.”

Understanding individual situations plays a big role in determining what how to handle the strategies for putting out a fire.

“If you’re using a stove and cause a grease fire, you can’t just throw water on the fire because the water won’t put out the fire due to grease being heavier,” Whitlock said.

To help students better understand fire safety methods, FPS holds events such as its Red Cross Residential Smoke Detector Campaign and Rookie Week, which occurred during Fire Prevention Week in October. During homecoming week, FPS

A key fire safety strategy is for students and Stillwater residents to be vigilant of everything they do.

“Make sure you know what you’re doing and pay attention to your actions,” Whitlock said. “If you smoke, don’t just flick your smoke bud to the ground, especially with the leaves on the ground. Just make the smart and simple actions, as those will help tremendously in keeping fires down and safety up.”

Last March, Amazon began collecting sales tax in Oklahoma.

Stillwater city officials implemented this tax to see a spike in revenue. Sales tax in Stillwater is 8.813 percent per dollar.

Amazon was expected to collect the same rate, but a loophole has been found with vendors on the Amazon website not collecting sales tax.

Norman McNickle, Stillwater city manager, released a statement Wednesday calling on the Oklahoma Legislature “to do its job” and “pass a strong online sales tax bill.”

McNickle’s proposed solution is for the Oklahoma Legislature to pass a bill similar to one passed in Colorado in 2010. Colorado’s online sales tax legislation requires internet retailers to provide customers’ names, addresses and amounts spent within the borders of the state.

Online retailers found the requirement to report all the information too much, so they decided to implement and remit sales tax in Colorado.

Oklahoma requires residents who purchase something that comes from outside Oklahoma’s borders to pay a use tax.

A use tax is similar to sales tax, but the responsibility of paying the tax is on the purchaser. Use tax is the same rate as sales tax, which is 4.5 percent.

“You and I order something on the internet, (and) we’re required at the end of the year on our income taxes in a little box to report those purchases and pay the sales (use) tax,” McNickle said. “Only 4 percent of Oklahomans report those.

“We need this law because it’s killing cities.”

Although parking garages help provide more conveniently located parking spots, they are expensive to build and this is reflected by the prices, Spradling said.

The construction of new garages could help future students, but they pose more of an inconvenience to current students, Pierce said.

Pierce said she still has a commuter parking permit so that she can drive to campus during inclement weather.

Review: ‘Super Mario Odyssey’ confirms the king of video games is back B rad en Fos ter staff reporter @ Bfoster

Nintendo might be the first company in video game history to actually beat itself for Game of the Year in 2017. When “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” was released alongside the Nintendo Switch, everyone thought it was a shoe-in for GOTY. The general consensus was that Nintendo was back, and the future was bright.

In June, however, the future got so bright people couldn’t believe it. Nintendo revealed a new Mario game, “Super Mario Odyssey,” that was planned for release in October. The E3 conference was one of the best in years, and the familiar plumber was the main act.

It is safe to say Nintendo has played itself in a good way. “Super Mario Odyssey” is everything people wanted from a Mario game and more. Not since “Super Mario Sunshine” has a game blown expectations out of the water, showing the world Mario is still definitely the king.

“Super Mario Odyssey” starts off with a short battle between Mario and his arch-nemesis, Bowser.

Bowser has already captured Princess Peach and intends to marry her unless Mario can stop her.

After losing the fight, Mario finds himself in “Hat Land,” and teams up with a magical hat named Cappy who allows Mario

to take control of creatures, enemies, and objects in the world. Mario must travel from kingdom to kingdom, each with unique challenges and currency, in order to collect Moons, which fuel the Odyssey ship in the chase after Bowser.

The structure of the game is pretty simple at first glance. There are 17 unique kingdoms in “Super Mario Odyssey,” each presenting challenges, a few events, and a boss or two in order to advance.

Mario must complete these events while collecting moons, of which you only need 200 of the 830 available to beat the game. Each kingdom is extremely unique, with different mechanics and enemies to challenge the player each time. No two kingdoms are remotely similar and the player can go from a kingdom where ice covers the ground and yetis throw snowballs to a kingdom where the inhabitants are forks. The whole game constantly changes and evolves without feeling tedious.

Bosses in the game are frequent but not tedious.

Each kingdom has one at the end of its small story, whether it’s a giant octopus or the Broodals. The Broodals are large rabbits that are Bowser’s wedding planners, and pop up frequently throughout the game to challenge Mario from getting to Peach.

in with a hint on how to beat them. Each fight can take anywhere from 3-10 minutes, and while harder than the regular enemies in the game, they are certainly not impossible.

The whole game revolves around throwing your hat at things.

This simple mechanic of tossing your hat onto something and seeing where it leads you is the basis of the game. Throw your hat onto a Goomba and run wild, become a bird or a T-Rex with a mustache. The possibilities are endless. Nintendo simply gives the player the means to traverse the world, and lets you figure out the rest.

There are countless ways to beat every level and challenge, making you improvise and leading

you to gratifying prizes.

Want to take control of a Bullet Bill and blow up a wall? Go for it. Want to bounce of your hat onto a Goomba and into a pipe that transports you into 8-bit Mario to climb a tower? Do it. The sheer amount of ways to traverse and defeat enemies is endless, only limited by your imagination.

Each kingdom also offers unique outfits and decorations for the Odyssey ship itself, purchasable from a shop with either gold coins, which are picked up in every level, or purple currencies, which are unique to each kingdom and do not transfer over. Each kingdom has two outfits, and while they don’t change anything about how the game is played or give

bonuses, finding and collecting every outfit will sometimes reward you with an extra moon.

It’s hard to find any flaws in this game because it is as perfect as a game can get. The only problem, which is slight, is maybe the length of the game. It’s way too short.

If a player sits down and plays for a few hours a day, the game will be over in a week. While there is always the option to go back and collect more moons, the lack of extra content is quite apparent when the credits roll. If you’re fine with a medium-length game, this one is certainly it.

“Super Mario Odyssey” is a pure joy to play, with addictive levels, fun mechanics, a great story and amazing music. Each

level is unique and different, providing the player with as much or as little content as they want. This game can be beaten in a few days, or a few weeks, depending on the player.

There is no right or wrong way to play the game, and it is truly up to the player how they wish to conquer every level. Super Mario Odyssey is an easy pick for game of the year, and will no doubt be in the running. Pick this game up if you enjoy fun action-adventure games that don’t have an age limit.
