Music is central to the culture in Stillwater.

On The Strip and at house shows in residential areas, Oklahoma State students listen and perform. From classic Red Dirt to indie rock, students are creating their own sounds to color the Stillwater music scene.

Trent Fletcher, a wildlife ecology and management senior, came to Stillwater for the Red Dirt scene.

town were the first places he went to start breaking into the music scene.

“Open mic nights are kind of where I got started in Stillwater,” Fletcher said. “I knew those were the places to meet musicians. I went there and started meeting musicians and getting (to be) really good buddies with Issac. That was one of my main goals, moving to Stillwater, I wanted to be a part of the Red Dirt scene going on up here. I knew this was the place to go for it, and I felt like I had a

chance to do something with my songs.”

Although Stillwater is known for that brand of sound, the music landscape has room for a variety of genres. Members of Humdrum Sun prefer the close atmosphere of house shows.

“I think the main difference is at shows (at traditional venues), you’re playing with other bands who, their style isn’t cohesive with your style,” Fish said.

“And it’s just kinda the music scene in Oklahoma, and in Oklahoma City and Tulsa specifically, is really all over the board. It’s a lot more fun playing with bands that we know and fit our style, and we can call our friends that have bands and just set up a house show and just have a good time.”

“It’s been rough,” Fletcher said. ‘I’ve had a lot of support, though ... On the weekends is when I go play. I prefer to play two shows a weekend if I can. Right now I have two weekends until December open, so I stay pretty booked up. A lot of long nights and no sleep.”

“The hardest thing is collaboration because we all care about it a lot, it’s just a matter of when can we all get together,” Ruley said. “It is such a team effort.

It has to be something when we all get together and work together to practice.”

Fletcher and Humdrum Sun also differ in the audiences they attract, but both see familiar faces in the crowd from show to show, whether those people are house show junkies or open mic regulars.

God is eternally God. He lives in eternity. He never had a beginning and will have no end. I have no concept of a being who has no beginning. It does not register, because I am a person of time.

It is so easy to limit God. However: “The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.”

(Is.40:26) He is the one who has expressed his love for mankind. Man, who has gone his own way. (Everyone has turned to his own way. All have sinned). He sent his Son to live among us, and then die in our place, paying the full penalty for our sins. Now he asks us to trust his love in Christ and follow him. There is nothing better than this. His way is eternal life!

e n t e r tainmen t “If anything, there’s a lot of people who appreciate it and just are really supportive,” Ruley said. “They genuinely enjoy the environment. That’s really cool to see.”

Because Stillwater is a college town, its music scene is constantly going through cycles as bands form and then disappear after the members graduate.

“Everybody keeps telling me, ‘Man, you should of been here

three or four years ago when everybody was still in town, that’s when everything was popping,’” Fletcher said. “I didn’t get to experience any of that because I’ve been here less than two years, but the amount of time that I have been here, still a good hub of musicians and a wide variety of different styles of music.”

Humdrum Sun is a group of seniors.

Although the members aren’t planning to let go

of the band and making music, they have seen the cycle at work with bands like Men of Action and the ThunderSluts, who used to play in Stillwater.

“Bands will be here for four years, five tops, and once they’re gone, it’s kind of recycled,” Fish said. “It’s just kind of a cycle, basically. Bands are here, and when they end up graduating and leaving, the baton is passed on.”

This cycle charac-

terizes the Stillwater music scene. People from small towns find like-minded people who like the same tunes and have a common love for music.

“This music scene in Stillwater is more than just country music, it’s a whole blend of sounds,” Fletcher said.

“It’s really, to me, just doing things independently and just writing honest lyrics and not taking shortcuts and music at its rawest,

most pure form. Everybody up here plays a different style. I think it’s just pretty cool to see all these different musicians doing different things in different venues and coming back here to Stillwater.”

Ruley didn’t always expect to play house shows for fans in her college town, but the experience has been rewarding.

“I went through this phase when I started discovering music

where I was like ‘Oh, I want to be in a band,’ very jokingly, never imagining that this would be me,” Ruley said. “I didn’t think I would have a support group for it... Just finding people who not only have been bandmates and people who appreciate and want that kind of music in Stillwater has been really cool.

For any student who is thinking about it, you’ll find a fan base for sure.”

Cal’s call on Town and Gown Theater’s killer new production, ‘Sweeney Todd’ J o seph Cal a m or e S taff Wr it er

Heartbreak, love, humor and murder are in the air as guests step through the doorway of Stillwater’s Town and Gown Theatre.

The twisted revenge story of demon barber Sweeney Todd has been once again sprung to life in this year’s fall production.

For those who find the thrill of a revenge murder story intriguing, the tale of Sweeney Todd offers more twists and turns than a mountain trail. Fans of uplifting and lighthearted wit can also find entertainment in this production. Director Gavin Thomas Drew has done an amazing job of incorporating fairly equal doses of both dark and light entertainment to form a performance that will keep guests on the edges of their seats until the final curtain.

The scene is right out of a 19th century English pub, though a black and

white tiled floor pattern provides an interesting element of a 1920s American diner. Fog fills the air, and dirtied white brick covers the north wall of the set, while a retro cash register and soda machine are the two metaphorical cherries on top of the Gothic sundae that stage manager Dawn Behrens created.

The busboy Tobias, played by Gavin Guthrie, is continuously cleaning tables and wiping down the counter on set before the actual production begins.

Guests will feel frazzled well before the first act if they catch one of Guthrie’s blank stares as he wipes off a butcher knife behind the counter.

By the time intermission came, I was already amazed with the details the actors of Town and Gown were able to bring to life. Thick English accents, studied and rehearsed for weeks, are the mainstays among the cast; costumer Anna Davis has each performer

dressed fittingly to their role and era from head to toe. With such in-depth performances throughout the production, guests could easily imagine they are at a Broadway show.

Jeffrey Ambrosini, the actor tasked with the portrayal of Sweeney Todd, intricately displays a longing for revenge that will captivate audiences from the opening song of “No Place Like London” to the act’s last song, “A Little

Priest.”

Oklahoma State freshman Dakota Norman, who plays the young sailor Anthony, sings alongside his counterpart Abigail Brock, who plays Johanna, in a spectacular duet performance in the middle of the first act. The young duo emulates true love on stage in a masterful job that will warm the hearts of those in attendance.

The gem of Act I, Bunny Stanphill, brings to life the

Italian swindler Aldolpho Pirelli and his boisterous attitude in the most humorous part of the production.

Stanphill’s impersonation is played out flawlessly and is sure to produce an incredible amount of laughs throughout the next week of shows.

Act II brings a heavy dose of seriousness as the plot begins to thicken with a murderous barber chair and cannibalism introduced to the storyline. Nellie Lovett, played by actress Elizabeth Ziegler, comes into her own during this act as a dominant character in a much darker setting. Lovett brings about Todd’s darker side, and with it, many more deathly trips to the barbershop.

Maddy Billings, who has been cast as the often-seen beggar woman, adds to this sense of madness through her chilling screams and spectacular engagement with the audience.

Last but not least, actors Scott Martin and John Mark

Day help bring this rendition of “Sweeney Todd” to a close through their convincing performances of resident alphas Judge Terpin and the local Beadle.

Together, the duo of Martin and Day work in harmony to create the ultimate villain ambience. When Todd is finally able to exact his revenge on these two thugs toward the end of Act II, we experience the lesson that revenge does not come without its own cost.

Performances of “Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street” are at the Town and Gown Theatre on 3524 S. Perkins Road. OSU students are offered free admission at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. The rest of the performances begin at 7:30 p.m. each night from Thursday through Saturday and 2:30 p.m.

The defense missed tackles, the offensive line couldn’t get any push up front and Spencer Sanders tossed a couple interceptions.

But even with all of the miscues, the Oklahoma State football team could have won the game.

Instead, its four-game winning streak against the Longhorns and fivegame run in Austin was snapped.

Running back Chuba Hubbard couldn’t find any running room all night.

If someone takes a quick glance at the stats, it looks like the nation’s

leading rusher had a solid game. He gained 121 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

Except he did so on a whopping 37 carries, which averages out to just 3.3 yards per attempt. His longest run was only 13 yards.

As the night wore on, Texas’ defense showed it wasn’t going to let up.

The Cowboys ran Hubbard into a wall time and time again and still didn’t alter their attack.

With a dynamic player like Hubbard, teams are going to go all out in trying to stop him. They will dare OSU’s freshman quarterback to beat them through the air.

The good thing for the Cowboys is I think Sanders is up for the challenge.

But it’s up to the coaches to give him the opportunity.

Take the first drive of the game, for instance.

Sanders danced expertly in the pocket and made an outstanding third down throw to Landon Wolf to get the ball down to the Texas 4-yard line.

He was off to a good start, but the ball was taken out of his hands. OSU elected to run the ball on first down, then second, then third. It was stuffed each time and settled for a field goal.

On second down from

the 1-yard line, Hubbard fumbled and Sanders recovered for a loss. On the same play, Tylan Wallace was on an island with Texas corner D’Shawn Jamison.

That seems like pretty good odds to me, but Sanders wasn’t given the chance to make the throw.

There were many other instances throughout the night when OSU elected to be conservative rather than give its playmakers a chance.

Hubbard was stuffed on a fourth and short.

He was handed the ball on a third and eight and stopped for a loss. The offense was even taken off the field in what was

originally a fourth and one but elected to run a fake field goal instead that never sniffed success.

Giving a young quarterback like Sanders the keys to the offense is obviously a risk. He is going to make some mistakes. And he has.

His first interception was a result of him trying to do too much and fit the ball into a tight window rather than taking what he could get on the ground.

But for every mistake he made, Sanders also made a wow play. He made the best throw of his young career Saturday night, when he wound up and absolutely dropped the ball in a bucket to

Braydon Johnson for a huge 55-yard completion.

He has shown the ability to make big time throws.

His talented arm and dynamic athleticism give OSU a chance to hang in shootouts with Big 12 teams when its running game struggles.

To be fair, not every team has the defensive talent to limit Hubbard like Texas does. Hubbard is an exceptional player and should still get a lot of touches in key situations.

The Cowboys’ offensive ceiling is much higher if Sanders is unleashed.

Three seconds left. Isabelle Nashmi, an SMU midfielder, strikes the ball in one last desperate attempt. Many of the 631 fans in attendance held their breaths.

One second left. The

ball nestles in the top right corner past OSU goalkeeper Dani Greenlee. The Cowgirls blow their second two-goal lead this season.

Although the game finished as a draw at 2 on Sunday, OSU coach Colin Carmichael said it felt like a loss.

“We gave up a late goal again to give up a two-goal lead, which is not pleasing to us,” Carmichael said. “You’re never happy when you give up a late lead like that.”

This is not the first time the No. 25 Cowgirls failed to record a win when leading by two goals.

Earlier this season, OSU (7-0-2) drew Bedlam rivals Oklahoma after it gave up a twogoal lead.

Prior to this season, the last time the Cowgirls blew a two-goal lead was in 2016 against Central Florida.

Sunday’s game went well for the Cowgirls before the final minutes.

In the 36th minute, OSU defender Kim Rodriguez received the ball at the top of the box off of a set-piece and fired it in for the opening goal. A slight deflection proved to be too much for Mustang goalkeeper Tatum Sutherland.

Five minutes into the

second half, Charmé Morgan delivered a cross over Sutherland’s outstretched hands to the waiting head of Grace Yochum, who nodded it into the open net.

Yochum, who has scored five goals in her past five games, said winning is the main focus.

“If I have to score, I’ll score, but whoever scores and we win games, I’m all for it,” Yochum said.

said there are positives to take away from the match.

“We’re still unbeaten, and if you had told me at the beginning of the season we would go the first part of the season before Big 12 play unbeaten, I would have been like, ‘Wow, we’re pretty good,’” Jones said.

With the draw to SMU, the Cowgirls remain undefeated after nonconference play. It was a feat few expected going into the 2019 season. If OSU wants to remain unbeaten, then mistakes like the draw to SMU can’t happen.

The Cowgirls travel to Lubbock, Texas, to play

a strong Texas Tech side Thursday.

Yochum said the shocking tie to SMU might have been what OSU needed.

“This was kind of a wake-up call,” Yochum said. “We’ve been getting a lot of press, a lot of recognition, and maybe this was the wake-up call we needed.

Like, all right, here we go, Big 12 play.”

The AMC movie theater in Stillwater seems to be busier than ever since it completed its renovations weeks ago, updating the theater seating and adding accommodations to building.

Here are the new additions to the Stillwater AMC theater: AMC MacGuffins adult beverage concept The AMC now has a bar in the theater. Its small look is deceiving, considering all of the options available to moviegoers 21 and older. Guests can enjoy beer, wine and cocktails before,

during or after movies.

New seating All seats in Stillwater’s AMC theater are now AMC’s signature plush power recliners.

There truly is not a bad seat in the house. The spacing of the seats was adjusted, so there is at least a full armrest between each seat.

If you’re anything like me, you nearly freeze to death every time you watch a movie in theaters. AMC has solved that issue with heated seats. With the press of a button, you can instantly make the cold go away and enjoy the show.
