Finals week is a frenzy of late-night studying and writing papers for many Oklahoma State students.

To make sure these students are fed, the Student Union Activities Board will hold Late Night Café from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Dec. 11 through Dec. 14 in OSU’s Student Union.

Kayla Loper, SUAB coordinator, explained what Late Night Café is.

“Late Night Café is a late-night breakfast program during finals week where we provide free

pancakes for students four nights in a row,” Loper said. “Staff and faculty from around campus volunteer to flip and serve pancakes and provide late night support to encourage students to do well on their final tests.”

Volunteers include OSU students, coaches, deans and more. Loper said students are entertained as they wait in line.

“There is always music, and we often have a short live performance drop in to entertain students,” Loper said.

Along with supplying food to students pulling all-night study sessions,

“We provide a free meal, coffee to stay awake a little longer, and words of encouragement to continue pushing through the week. I want students to know that we are invested in their educational journey and that we’re rooting for them to do well. We’ll also miss them over the winter break.”

Balanced Coffee provides place for OSU students to study for finals J o sh Potee t S taf f R epo rt er @ o c olly

As finals approach and Edmon Low Library fills up, some students are beginning to search off-campus for new study spots.

Many find solace at their houses, and some go to coffeehouses such as Aspen Coffee or Starbucks.

Other students are finding their spot at Balanced Coffee Co. at 120 E. 9th St. in downtown Stillwater.

Balanced Coffee opened its doors in September of this year and has been serving hot coffee, espressos and baked goods ever since.

Because it opened just recently, some students aren’t familiar with the business, which means it works as a quiet study spot for students during finals week.

Michael Majors owns the business with his wife, Lexi.

“For me, when I was in college, it was hard to study at home,” Majors said. “When you come in here, you can really focus in on things. We have a big study room in the back specifically for this reason.”

But what makes Balanced Coffee particularly relevant during finals week is its focus on a balanced lifestyle.

“Life is all about balance,” according to Balanced Coffee’s website, and Majors said he wants

customers to use the coffee shop to find that balance.

“We wanted to create an environment where you don’t just come to get coffee,” Majors said.

“We want it to be a place where you can come in and relax. It’s a big space where the front is more social, and then the study room is in the very back.

We strive to create a place where people can come and do what they need to do.”

Customers at Balanced Coffee can buy anything from cups of coffee to specialty drinks including cappuccinos and mochas. Prices range from $2.45 for a cup of drip coffee to about $6.50 for

a specialty pour. Majors said he recognizes some the prices are higher than some students expect, but he assures his customers that it’s for a good reason.

“We pride ourselves on getting really highquality coffee,” Majors said. “We get our coffee from the Onyx Coffee Lab out of northwest Arkansas, and they pride themselves on paying their farmers really good wages for such a great product.”

Majors said Balanced Coffee Co. focuses on on not only providing a great product but on also on being different from other coffeehouses.

“People have been

really receptive to the atmosphere we created here,” Majors said. “We didn’t want to have a drive-through like some of the other places because we thought that it didn’t make our business as homey as we want it to be. We want customers to come in and be comfortable.”

Another issue Majors said people have mentioned is Balanced Coffee’s limited hours right now as staff are trained. Colton Kersey, an agricultural leadership senior, said he is a Balanced Coffee regular and loves the place so much that he would like it to be open more.

“I love Balanced and

think having a unique coffee shop is great for Stillwater,” Kersey said.

“But I wish that they were open later than 5 p.m. on the weekdays so that I could go after a day of classes.

Majors said he has heard concerns similar to Kersey’s since Balanced Coffee opened, and he has plans to solve the problem.

“We are only coming up on month 3 of being open, and so we are still trying to get more staff trained before we extend hours,” Majors said. “We want our staff to provide a great experience for the customer, and so we are really in the process of training. We plan on ex-

tending our hours at the start of the new year.”

With the addition of Balanced Coffee in downtown Stillwater, students have a plethora of options as they choose where to have their next study session.

Aspen Coffee and Blue Spruce are also popular study hangouts in the area, but despite the competition near Balanced, Majors said the past couple of weeks have been great for business.

“It’s been a lot busier since finals are coming up,” Majors said. “People are coming in, and they can hang out for a few hours and get stuff done.

It’s been more steady.”

With finals looming and students trying to decide where to plan their next study date, Majors said Balanced Coffee Co. has a variety of places where people can get work done.

“If you want to hang out, then you can sit at our tables up front,” Majors said. “If you want to read a book and hang out in the hammocks, then you can do that, too.

“Or if you want to study hard and focus on that, the study room in the back is great for students.”

James Washington signed up to play every game during his four-year span at Oklahoma State, and he’ll do just that.

In 2014, Washington, a receiver, caught one pass for 5 yards in his Cowboy debut against Florida State.

Four seasons later, his career will end against Virginia Tech in the Camping World Bowl at 4:15 p.m. Dec. 28 in Orlando after a campaign that earned him the Fred Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation’s top receiver.

“It’s starting to get a little bit more emotional,” Washington said. “It just shows that it’s coming to an end, your college career.”

But Washington’s football career will not end in 2018.

When you have the type of players like we have, you want to see them play in a bowl game. And if they start to fold across the country, what does that do for your bowl games and your team? “… I was excited, not surprised, with Mason and James. One, they like to play in the games. Two, they love being here.”

Before last season’s Alamo Bowl, Washington and Rudolph announced in San Antonio their decision to forgo the NFL Draft as

juniors and return for their senior campaigns. For Washington, that meant playing every snap of his senior season and never thinking about skipping the bowl game.

“That never crossed my mind,” Washington said. “In my mind, that’s like disloyalty. If I sign a scholarship to play here, I’m gonna play every game that I can.

I’m not gonna sit out just because of something later on in life. You just never know when you’ll get this game back, so I try to take every opportunity that I can to play this game and just play with my brothers.”
