Ron Ateman marked spots in the garage of where his son had grown.

Every time Ron measured, he marked the day and the month, each mark slightly higher than the last.

The marks started in 2004, pencil lead transitioning to a green marker and black ink as years passed and Marcell Ateman grew. As he developed, he didn’t realize how much football would become a focal point in his life.

“His youth coach, Tony Moore, told me he was going to have a pigskin in his hand for the rest of his life,” Ron said.

That’s why, during the summer of 2016, Ateman was practicing with former Cowboy quarterback Brandon Weeden, and others, working on fundamentals, preparing for his senior season.

“He’s always striving to become better,” quar-

terback Mason Rudolph said. “He always puts in the extra reps and works on the little details. It helps him get better.”

The session was coming to a close. Ateman lined up for the last passand-catch combo of the day: a 15-yard in route.

Ateman sprinted down the field. Weeden threw it to the spot where Ateman should’ve been. He never made it.

Ateman was on the ground in pain. His right foot had collapsed under him.

Although Ateman’s growth was marked on the wall, it couldn’t represent the change Ateman would encounter after he hit the turf and the ball sailed past him.

“When you go through something so much, you can kind of forget the meaning behind it,” Ateman said. “I feel like that year, having it taken away from me, really built my purpose. It helped me gain and relive for why really I was really playing the game.”

The injury took the thing away he loved the most, but it showed Ateman there were bigger advantages in life.

When Ateman goes home in Dallas, he finds his solace, and his dad instincts take control.

When he walks in the door, Ateman sees Jayden Ateman, and his focus becomes solely his son.

Ateman sprawls on the floor, playing various games and keeping up with the wandering mind of a toddler. Next, he is on his back, holding Jayden above him as if he is an airplane.

After three weeks of dominance, the Cowboys might finally be tested.

Oklahoma State hosts TCU to open Big 12 play Saturday in Boone Pickens Stadium. It will be the No. 6 Cowboys’ first game against a ranked opponent this season, as TCU is ranked 16th.

“This will be the best team that we’ve played up to this point,” OSU coach Mike Gundy said.

OSU has outscored its opponents 107-31 by halftime thus far this season, meaning the Cowboys’ starters haven’t had to play too long into the second half. TCU, though, has had close games the past

two weeks where the Horned Frogs starters were tested throughout the game.

Gundy said there are two ways to look at the Cowboys’ lack of meaningful late game opportunities.

“I would say that (TCU has) been challenged late in the game, but don’t let (TCU coach Gary Patterson) fool you, he’s working and burning midnight oil to try to stop us,” Gundy said. “I would prefer that we limit reps.

Rudolph’s success has moved him to third on ESPN’s Heisman Watch, but Rudolph said that isn’t his or his team’s focus.

“It’s about winning the Big 12 title,” Rudolph said.

“It’s always been about that.

Oklahoma State is looking to get back to its winning ways.

The Oklahoma soccer team travels to Stillwater on Friday for a matchup with No. 22 Oklahoma State at 4 p.m.

The Cowgirls (7-1-2) return home after losing their first match of the season 3-0 against California-Berkeley on Sunday.

After breaking a four-match losing streak against OU with a 2-1 nonconference win Aug. 25, OSU looks to bounce back with another Bed-

lam win.

OSU goalie Michela Ongaro said opening the conference schedule against OU (2-6-1), especially after a loss, has the team eager to play against its rival.

“I think we’ve typically started with TCU and Baylor and so this is a little bit different,” Ongaro said. “I think the win in Norman a few weeks ago kind of set us on the trajectory that we’re on now.”

After suffering its first defeat, Ongaro said the team didn’t have time to dwell and had an intense week of practice.

OSU coach Colin Carmichael said the loss was disappointing, but having the Bedlam match up next will provide a good opportunity to regain confidence.

“It’s actually good to have the Bedlam match coming off a loss because it’s easy to refocus,” he said.

With the addition of Kansas State to the Big 12 soccer schedule, each team has nine conference

matches with either four or five at home.

The Cowgirls will have four this season, and Carmichael said they must make the most of those.

“It’s a big game from the standpoint of it’s our first Big 12 game, it’s OU,” he said. “And obviously, we only have four home games in the league this year, so if we want to win the league we need to win probably all four at home.”

Jayden was born in October, only two months after Ateman lost what he believed was the most important aspect of his life.

As Jones has watched Jayden grow, she has seen Ateman do the same.

“Marcell has a way with Jayden,” Jones said.

“They have that fatherson connection.”

Ateman filled his time with Jayden, keeping Jayden busy while the sound of giggles made Ateman forget life on the football field.

With parenting comes the dirty work: changing diapers, cleaning messes and being confused on how to do it. Ateman was

prepared for the smells and messes. He deals with them quickly and timely.

“He’s very particular how he likes things done,” Jones said. “I would do it my way because everyone does it their own way and Marcell would go, ‘No, no, don’t do it that way.’

He would just take over completely. Dirty diapers, anything, the way he takes care of Jayden is Marcell’s way. He does such a good job when he’s here, I really don’t have to do anything.”

down stairs and around obstacles.

Jones often laughed at how positive Ateman was throughout the early parts of his injury. Nothing was negative; he made everything a positive and an advantage because he was a competitor.

Wide receivers coach Kasey Dunn said Ateman should have the phrase ‘Compete’ tattooed on his forehead because it has become a way of life for him.

“It was instilled in me since I was little,” Ateman said. “It’s something that I hold on my shoulders.”

Because it was supposed to be his senior year, OSU strength and conditioning coach Rob Glass worried Ateman may not take rehab seriously.

Glass had seen it

before. Athletes who get hurt before their final season give up on themselves. But Ateman knew rehab was another competition, one with himself.

A cast and crutches weren’t going to make him quit. It was another way to grow: for his son, for the game he loved and so he could come back stronger.

Jones feels his energy because when they’re together, Ateman makes everything an advantage. The injury was temporary, and though a setback, Ateman learned how to be a father.

Rehab was another obstacle, but for Ateman to get back to playing on TV instead of watching from the couch, it was necessary. Ateman preaches everything happens for a reason, and it helped him during rehab after football was taken from him.

“He was excellent,” Glass said. “His work habits were tremendous.

He’s a guy who has a lot of pride in the way he works. For him, rehab was easy.”

Even when Ateman was working through rehab, offensive coordinator Mike Yurcich said he saw Ateman’s drive to come back stronger and healthier than before his injury. His routes were sharper, his voice crisper and his demeanor made his teammates better.

He didn’t take reps off; if someone else did, Ateman would rub it in, pushing his teammates unlike before.

of the season, Ateman wouldn’t have played another down for OSU. He could’ve injured himself before Pro Day and depleted his NFL Draft stock. Yet, the injury happened before the season.

Ateman used his redshirt and he got another chance at his senior season.

Having something taken away from him that he loved more than anything made his competitive edge take another step.

Happens for a reason Jayden hurries to the door as soon as he sees Ateman. When Ateman has time off, he spends it with Jayden. Jayden is his biggest fan, and though he can’t talk, he wants to be like dad.

Every day, Ateman and Jones use Facetime so he can talk with her and he can spend time with Jayden. It’s before Jayden goes to sleep, in the locker room before practice or before Ateman goes to class. Wherever Ateman can make time in his day for Jayden, he does. It’s the family time they can spend together, though four hours, school and a future separate them. Time with his family brings Ateman back to the hospital room where Jayden was born.

“It was just a feeling that I’ve never felt before,” Ateman said.

“Pouring out emotions.

Seeing him, I wouldn’t take that back for nothing.”

Jones said Ateman has done a great job handling the adversity of being a

father while playing Division I football. In between reading for class and watching film, Ateman’s mind is on Jayden, thinking about his day and whether his son is going to make 3-pointers or catch touchdown passes.

Ateman has aspirations for Jayden to play sports, like Ron had for Ateman when he was young. When dad walks in the door, it’s training time. Ateman jokes he’s going to get a basketball and teach Jayden how to dribble and run laps. The next step is getting Jayden on the speed ladder.

The tone in his voice is sarcastic, which makes Jones laugh. But deep down, she sees he is serious while reminding him Jayden isn’t quite 1.

Ateman wants to do more, though. It’s striving for perfection that helps him grow while he is reading textbooks in Stillwater and when he rushes south to see his family any off time he gets.

“He is more focused on what’s important and his goals,” Jones said.

Ron watched his son change. Now a grandfather, Ron saw Ateman develop a bond with Jayden like he did with Ateman. Football would come back, but time with Jayden clicked away, like the sound of crutches carrying Ateman through the day.

Ateman could miss football. He couldn’t miss watching his son grow up.

“Sometimes we say God does things for a reason,” Ron said. “I think that was a good time for him to bond with his son.

“He’s handling it well.

Sometimes kids don’t tell you everything that is going through their minds, but he is handling it a little bit better than I anticipated.”

One final ride Ateman sat in the Boone Pickens Stadium theater room, answering questions quickly and sternly. He had just

played his first game in more than a year but was ready to see Jayden.

It will be a common theme; Jayden will spend many hours in the stands

of Boone Pickens Stadium. Jayden won’t remember Ateman’s touchdowns or one-handed catches, yet the moment he walks around the corner after

the game, it won’t matter. Dad is here, and it’s father-son time.

In his first three games back, Ateman has 13 receptions, tied with preseason All-American James Washington for most on the team. He caught two touchdowns against South Alabama and one against Pittsburgh.

His game is getting stronger. Ateman does everything, including the intangible dirty work. He blocks like a lineman, runs like a sprinter and jumps like a basketball player. His competitiveness leads him to success and the little things he

does make him irreplaceable, even in the best receiving corps in college football.

His versatility makes teammates happy to have him back.

“It’s a lot of fun having a 6-4, 220-pound body out there on the field,” Washington said. “It’s a corner’s nightmare to go up against someone with his body type. With him coming back, it’s really helping us out.”

Ateman has a new purpose in life. He wants to play in the NFL, and he wants to provide for his family. Embracing his son as he walks through the door beats catching a

touchdown pass.

“My son is everything to me,” Ateman said.

Back home, inside the Atemans’ garage, Ron’s marks are still on the wall, unscathed by time or a paint job, showing his son’s growth through high school.

He is done adding marks to the wall, but Marcell Ateman is still growing. He has his year away from football to thank for that.

NEW PATROL UNIT BRINGS OSU POLICE TO HEART OF CAMPUS T

he Oklahoma State University Police Department now has a patrol unit dedicated to the core area of campus. Headquarted in the Student Union, the core campus patrol is made up of three officers who patrol the central part of campus on foot, bicycle or Segway between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The new patrol unit has been added to increase the department’s visibility on campus and enhance its interaction with members of the campus community.

Creating this patrol unit in the heart of campus was at the top of Leon Jones’ to-do list when he became OSU Chief of Police on Aug. 1.

“This patrol unit gives OSU police a presence in the most visible part of campus — giving officers the opportunities to educate the campus about safety. And because we maintain a daily presence in the core portion of campus we can respond quickly to situations where a patrol car simply can’t go.”

In addition to the core campus officers patrolling the area, they also have an office space located in room 225 of the Student Union.

“The police department is so appreciative to Assistant Vice President and Director of the Student Union Mitch Kilcrease and his staff,” Chief Jones said. “Their partnership has been vital in making this project get up and running and is important to the success of the patrol unit moving forward.”

The OSU Police Department is a fully accredited law enforcement agency consisting of 33 sworn officers. The patrol division consists of 16 officers covering OSU’s 2,600 acres of property, which includes Lake Carl Blackwell and the Oklahoma Research Park located along Highway 51.

ylie Hagerdon says she was following a family tradition when she enrolled at Oklahoma State University. Her grandfather, an aunt and other relatives attended OSU. Hagerdon, from Choctaw, is a double major in physics and chemistry who is working in Dr. Yolanda Vasquez’s chemistry lab as a Niblack Research Scholar. In her research, she is working to produce cadmium sulfide nanocrystrals, which are useful in medicine, pharmacology and electronics.

An Oklahoma State University student was arrested Saturday after reportedly breaking into a home while “naked from the waist

down.”

Kyle Nicholas Stein, 19, a reported member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, was arrested on a charge of firstdegree burglary and four charges of false identification.

At about 1:15 a.m., dispatch reported a suspect had broken into a home in the 1600 block of East 19th Avenue and two residents had barricaded themselves into a bedroom upstairs.

two broken windows and found the back door open before they heard people screaming inside, according to police reports.

Officers formed a twoman entry team to enter through the back door and reported seeing “a trail of blood on the floor throughout the house and smeared blood on the walls.”

Moving toward the screaming, officers saw Stein, partly clothed and bleeding from cuts on his legs, at the top of the stairs, reportedly trying to gain entry into the room the residents were in.

An officer shouted “Stillwater police” and ordered Stein to move away from the door and come downstairs.

Stein complied, lying face down on the ground and

putting his hands behind his back.

Officers had Stein sit outside by a tree while they tried to identify him. His wallet, found in his shirt pocket, contained his valid Missouri driver’s license and four fake driver’s licenses; three Arkansas and one South Carolina.

The residents told police they believed Stein came from a large party on 19th Avenue that Payne County Sheriff’s Office deputies had broken up earlier. Stein later told officers he was a Lambda Chi and had come from a fraternity party, according to police reports.

Police reports did not state whether Stein was intoxicated.

Chi Alpha, Quenton Clay, did not immediately confirm whether Stein is or was a member.

After being treated at the Stillwater Medical Center, Stein was processed through the Stillwater city jail and later transferred to the Payne County Jail.

Stein posted a $4,000 surety bond on Sunday and was released.

His arraignment was Thursday and his next court date is set for Oct. 19 at 1:45 p.m., according to court records.

The Oklahoma State University Police Department is looking for a new fitness trainer.

Quincy Johnson, a graduate student earning his master’s in applied exercise science, trained OSU’s officers at the Colvin Recreation Center for about a year. However, he had to quit at the end of August to make time for his graduate assistantship. Johnson said he wants the public to recognize the OSU police officers’ hard work.

“It’s to let the community know, hey, (OSUPD is) dedi-

cated to staying in shape to serve you,” Johnson said.

Xzaveion Price, a fitness graduate assistant at the Department of Wellness, said Johnson was not immediately replaced because trainers are not available. Price said he is proud of the program and doesn’t want to let it go; but trainers are student employees, and most have classes when the officers’ workouts were previously scheduled.

Johnson offered three onehour sessions on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 5 a.m., 7:30 a.m. and 11 a.m.

Officers tracked their nutrition habits and executed exercises specific to their needs.

Johnson said training police

officers is different from training athletes or bodybuilders.

“Athletes can practice through soreness or miss a game, but for (a police officer’s) line of work, their life depends on being in some sort of physical shape, being able to perform,” Johnson said. “Because you never know what they may come in contact with and just like that, they have to jump into action.”

It’s not only their lives on the line.

OSUPD Chief Leon Jones said officers who are not confident in their ability to pursue and apprehend a suspect might exercise poor judgment.

“If they’re not physically fit, not mentally sharp, that officer might lose a battle, and they might go to drastic measures and actually use deadly force when it’s really not needed,” Jones said.

OSUPD Officer Vernon Charlot Jr. said it’s all about confidence.

“If you’re chasing someone, somebody’s going to get tired,” Charlot said. “If you’re in shape, it’s going to be him.”

Jones said fitness has always been emphasized at the department, but he admits it could be better. He said about 12 of the department’s 33 officers were involved in the program before it was postponed, but when it picks up

in the future, he wants “100 percent involvement.”

Jones said the program sparked a new camaraderie and competition among officers in the department.

He said many of them have Apple Watches or fitness tracking devices where they can view and compare their fitness stats to others.

OSUPD Officer Chris Gripe said he participated in the program for about 9 months and saw a definite difference.

“I know a couple of officers better than I did before just because I interacted with them over there,” Gripe said.

“And I have improved energy, lost a little bit of size, a lot

less aches and pains.”

Jones said Gripe is proud of his progress in the fitness program.

“A little more detail,” Jones said. “(Gripe) told me this morning, he was bragging, he did his Catapult (Health) Screening, and he lost 6 inches around his waist.”

Price said trainers are in the process of learning to pick up where Johnson left off, and he hopes to restart the program during winter break.
