Oklahoma lawmakers reluctant to voice support for Trump impeachment inquiry A le x Sloan

As calls for the impeachment of President Donald Trump continue to grow across the nation, lawmakers from Oklahoma are approaching the issue from different angles.

Although no member of Oklahoma’s congressional delegation has voiced support for impeachment proceedings against Trump, some have been less supportive than others.

Representatives Kendra Horn and Tom Cole have expressed a willingness to examine the evidence against the president before making a final decision about whether to vote for articles of impeachment.

Before any articles of impeachment reach the Senate for trial, the House of Representatives has to vote to approve the charges contained within them, which will put every member of the House on record as voting yea, nay or abstaining from bringing charges against Trump.

The other five members of the Oklahoma congressional delegation are either avid opponents of the impeachment inquiry or did not respond to requests for comment.

Republican from the 2nd District, falls into the former category. In a statement from Mullin’s office, he said that the inquiry is the latest attempt by “Pelosi Democrats” to oppose the president.

“They have wasted time and taxpayer dollars on investigation after investigation, and now they’re taking it a step further with a baseless impeachment investigation,” the statement reads. “Will they ever stop this witch hunt?”

but indicated in a press release Sept. 24 that the goal of the left was to “call for impeachment first, and sort through the facts later.”

Taking a more moderate approach, Cole, a Republican from the 4th District, did not condemn the investigations into Trump with the ferocity of his colleagues. When asked for a statement about his stance on impeachment, Cole’s office responded with a YouTube video uploaded Sept. 27.

In the video, Cole expressed concerns about the secondhand nature of the information detailed in the whistle-

blower complaint and a belief that the White House has been “very cooperative” in the matter. Toward the end of the video, Cole called for a measured approach to the impeachment process at hand.

“I would just caution everyone not to rush to any judgements,” Cole said. “Let the hearings proceed, let the information come out, and then make a considered judgement.”

Horn, a Democrat from the 5th District, is one of only 11 Democrats in the House of Representatives yet to support an impeachment inquiry, according

30, Horn addressed impeachment during a 30-minute media availability away from the 100 constituents in attendance.

“I think that it is important that when we are facing very serious challenges as a nation, and as lawmakers, that we approach them very thoughtfully and intentionally,” Horn said. “The allegations that have been made are serious, they involve our national security, and at the same time, we have to make sure the process is transparent. This is not about

politics; it should never be about politics.”

If the House were to approve articles of impeachment, then the trial would be held in the Senate, where senators would serve as the jury, deciding whether to convict the president.

Senators James Inhofe and James Lankford, Republicans, would then have their chance to weigh in on the allegations against Trump.

Lankford’s office responded to requests for statements or an interview with an NPR interview published Sept. 30. “...One of the main facts that everyone seems to be missing is the Ukrainian President Zelensky is actually the one who brought the issue up,” Lankford said in the interview.

It is unclear whether Lankford is specifically responding to the transcript of the phone call between Trump and Zelensky. In that transcript, Trump asked “for a favor” before Zelensky brought up the fired Ukrainian prosecutor but after Zelensky indicated interest in buying weapons from the United States.

Inhofe and Representative Frank Lucas, a Republican of the 3rd District, did not respond to requests for interviews or statements by the time of publication.

The Oklahoma State University Department of Management has continued to hire what it calls professors of professional practice, also known as PoPPs, in recent years.

These professors were brought to OSU because of their practical experience in the management sector.

Stephanie Royce, who is the department’s most recently hired professor of professional practice, said her prior experience gives students an idea of what they will be doing once they graduate.

“I think it brings reality

into the classroom,” Royce said. “I think it enhances the student experience because (professors of professional practice) have real-world experiences. Rather than speaking hypothetically, I can give real-world examples.”

Professors of professional practice are different from the normal tenure-track research professors universities employ.

The department has continued to add these professors because they are able to focus on building relationships with the students rather than focusing on research and publishing papers.

Bryan Finch, who is also

the director of the sports management institute at Spears School of Business, said when he was first looking for employment in higher education, there was no tenure track for sports management professors.

“You just had to apply for what there was,” Finch said. “There wasn’t even a program when I applied; they had one class and they didn’t even know what they were doing with it.”

Finch has built the sports management program from the ground up through his time at OSU. He has taught classes such as advanced sports management and international sports management. These classes allowed

Finch to build relationships with students who now are working in professional sports.

Jennifer Coonce, who previously worked in management for companies such as Dolce Vita and UBS Financial Services Wealth Management, said she didn’t know the department was looking for a PoPP when she decided to move from New York City back to Stillwater.

She found out about the job while at a fundraising lunch with Ken Eastman, the dean of Spears School of Business.

“One of the things he mentioned was that they were hiring people who have extensive industry experi-

ence to come back and be solely focused on the students and the community,” Coonce said.

Coonce added that building those relationships with students is the most important aspect overall.

“It’s easy to have blinders on and say, ‘Here’s the course, and this is how the world works,’” Coonce said.

“But when you really step out into industry, it’s a much more complicated craze.

I think that providing the perspective to students is to give them skills, and one of those skills is to be able to deal with the unpredictable.”

Professors of professional practice make up a small but growing number of profes-

sors in the Spears School of Business, as well as in many schools around the country.

Although Royce, Finch and Coonce see the benefit of having more professors of professional practice, they recognize that tenuretrack research professors are always needed as well.

“If we don’t have the people doing the research and validating what’s going on in the workplace, then professors of professional practice don’t have a foundation, they’re just giving opinions,” Coonce said. “It’s definitely a team approach because I can tell stories all day long, but without the research, my experience may have just been a one-off.”

Five minutes can make all the difference.

The Oklahoma State soccer team used a quick burst of energy after halftime to win 2-1 against Kansas State on Sunday.

Coming out of halftime down 1-0, the Cowgirls put everything they had toward the goal and reaped the benefits of it.

In the 48th minute, Hannah Webb made a darting run down the left and sent a pass across the box. Olyvia Dowell flicked it to Grace Yochum to bring OSU level with K-State.

Two minutes later, Webb made a similar run before laying it off to Coleman, who spun her defender and gave the Cowgirls the 2-1 lead they held through the end.

“They came out of half flying,” coach Colin Carmichael said. “They just got after it, and I think Kansas State was wondering what hit them. Getting the early goal helps change momentum.

Getting the second was a big deal, and then we grinded it out from then.”

Through the first 45 minutes, OSU had mostly controlled play.

The only problem was the Cowgirls (9-1-3, 2-1-1 Big 12) were losing 1-0 to K-State.

hardt led to a Wildcat breakaway in the 25th minute.

That gave K-State (2-9-2, 0-4-0) a lead that would last until half.

Carmichael has said multiple times this season that the Cowgirls tend to struggle against teams that they are better than on paper, and their match Sunday was no different.

“There’s a different mentality when you are the underdog,” Carmichael said.

“I think sometimes when you are playing a team where you expect to win based on rankings, there is that human element where you sort of come out at not 100 percent.”

Junior forward Gabriella Coleman said that the players feel the same effect.

“I do feel that,” Coleman said. “I gotta keep pushing

myself, the team has to keep pushing ourselves. Obviously we all want to win, so we have to fight through this. We can’t settle, even if we are winning, we have to go after everything. Any given day, a team can beat us.”

The Cowgirls made sure they didn’t let the underdog stun them, though. They never looked back after halftime, dominating the second half to come away with the victory.

“The message after the game was simple,” Carmichael said. “You can’t always play beautiful, open, attractive soccer. Sometimes the game dictates otherwise, and you have to grind out results.

If you want to win a championship, sometimes you have days like that, and you have to find a way to win.”

Oklahoma State soccer fans had flashbacks to Bedlam after Hannah Warner was injured midway through the second half against Kansas State on Sunday at Neal Patterson Stadium.

The Cowgirls defeated the Wildcats 2-1, but their starting goalkeeper couldn’t finish the game.

In the 60th minute, Warner went down after coming out of the net to make a save and collided with a Wildcat defender.

Warner left the OU game Aug. 29 in a similar fashion.

“Nothing will ever be harder than (Bedlam); that was the hardest obstacle I think I’ve ever faced,” backup goalkeeper Dani

Greenlee said.

Warner started in her first match since Bedlam when the Cowgirls faced Kansas on Thursday.

Greenlee started nine games after Warner’s initial injury, and there was no hesitation when she replaced Warner midway through the second half against K-State.

“I got to get ready,” Greenlee said. “I have to get my mentality ready to roll, warm up really fast and go.”

The Cowgirls (9-13, 2-1-1 Big 12) were plagued by injury last season and have learned how to overcome their adversity. Despite the injury and the sudden change in goalkeeper, OSU did not change its mentality and focus.

was injured,” forward Gabriella Coleman said, “but we got to stay focused and push through this game no matter what.”

Warner was responsive and walked off the field on her own, but the goalkeeping situation remains unclear.

The Cowgirls have two strong goalkeepers, and coach Colin Carmichael said that he is always going to play who he believes is going to give OSU the best opportunity to win.

“I wasn’t worried about Dani at all; she was a starter up until two weeks ago,” Carmichael said.

“I think you have to give Dani great credit for not playing on Thursday and then not playing the first half and having to jump in, in a split second.”
