Students and faculty are getting an early test of Canvas through the spring pilot program.

The pilot program includes over 170 faculty members who elected to join the trial and use Canvas, the new online classroom software at Oklahoma State Univeristy, for their classes.

This allows professors and students an opportunity to test the software before it is implemented campus-wide.

Christine Ormsbee, associate provost and director for OSU’s Institute for Teaching and Learning Excellence Department, selected Canvas to be used at OSU. She said that mobile support was the most important feature in the selection process.

“It’s an app-based system, rather than a browser-based system,” Ormsbee said. “What that allows students to do is work more effectively and efficiently in mobile devices, which is what students use today.”

An app-based software is becoming more important as smartphones are becoming more common. Ormsbee said 75 percent of students use their smartphone, instead of a computer, to access Canvas.

Kenya Perry, a health education and promotion

junior, has a class that is part of the Canvas pilot program. She said she can already notice the improvements that Canvas has to offer.

“I noticed it’s a lot more detailed,” Perry said. “It has way more tabs and stuff. It offers more notifications.”

Improved notifications are a key feature of Canvas. It allows a secondary email to be used, meaning students can decide where they are notified about grades and assignments.

Ormsbee said Canvas also offers a text message notification system.

This new system will improve the communication between students and their professors.

Mary Jo Self, a professor in the College of Education, Health and Aviation, volunteered to take part in the Canvas pilot program. She said she chose to learn the software early to set an example for her students.

“Part of what I hope to teach the students in my class is how to learn something new,” Self said. “So, as a professor, if I say ‘I’m not going to learn how to do that because it’s new,’ that doesn’t set a good example for my students.”

To learn the software, Self said she used the online tutorials Canvas provides. She said she recommends all professors and students go through the tutorials,

which cover any question users might have about the software.

Along with the tutorials Canvas provides, the ITLE at OSU offers in-depth training. Simon Ringsmuth from ITLE has provided several instructional videos, as well as offering teaching sessions over the features Canvas offers.

After learning the software, the features available help create a better connection to the classroom. One feature Canvas offers is for students to connect to classrooms through Skype. This is particularly valuable to students who are unable to come to campus for their classes.

Self said she has already seen how valuable this tool is for her students’

lives.

“We connect virtually for our classes,” Self said. “Most of my students are not here on campus. They’re all over the state. It allows them to simply go to their computer wherever they are and connect to the class.”

The pilot program has gone relatively smooth so far. Ormsbee said the system has only had one minor incident so far, to her knowledge.

“We had students that weren’t able to get into Canvas on the first day,” Ormsbee said. “IT manages all of that, and they were able to get that fixed. I think, honestly, from my perspective, it’s gone really well.

problems the first time, but that’s why we do the pilot.”

As Canvas is being implemented at OSU, several students said they hope the new software isn’t going to change again soon.

Thomas Rasor, an economics senior, said he is hesitant to get accustomed to the new software.

“I have seen some of it, and it looks better organized than the old one,” Rasor said. “It’s the third software I have had to use at OSU, so I hope it’s my last. I never cared for Brightspace, but I was really familiar with it. I figure it is going to take a while to get the new one down, but I’m looking forward to the app support it has.”

Perry said she would love if the university could pick a software and stick to it, but that she will support whatever they choose.

“If it works better than the other one and it’s better for the mobile app and computer, then I’m all for it,” Perry said.

Ormsbee said all OSU classes will adopt Canvas software May 13. The system will be available through any internet browser or smartphone.

However, as followers of Christ, we are called to something different. The apostle tells us; “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

(1 Thess.5:16-18 NIV) This is a true lifestyle change for most of us. Some may say, “No one really does this!”

Yet, this is God’s will, so let’s ask God’s help and go for it. Work at it!

Grow in it! This is the time of year when we have a day of national thanksgiving in our country. Itis a good time to begin; not just for a day, but a beginning of a daily practice. In the Psalms, David declares, “My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast, (I have made up my mind!) I will sing and make music.

Awake, my soul! (shake yourself, choose to do it). Awake harp and lyre! (use an instrument; put on a CD) I will awaken the dawn. (I will begin each day in this way of praise and thanksgiving) (Ps.57:7-8) Let’s be doers of the Word and not just hearers! It may take a little time to build this type of a lifestyle, but let’s work at it. It will produce great results in our lives and open many doors of blessing in serving the Lord. Let’s first give ourselves to the Lord!

Instructors from the Oklahoma State University Police Department plan to lead a four-day self-defense course starting Monday.

Police officers will teach the course according to the Rape Aggression Defense Systems, a program that, according to the pamphlet, teaches “realistic self-defense tactics and techniques.” Four members of the OSUPD are certified instructors of R.A.D., including Sgt. Leah Storm, the program coordinator at OSU. The course will be offered on the first floor of Bennett Hall and is open to women only. No affiliation with OSU is required. Minors

cannot participate without a guardian’s permission. The course is 12 hours, beginning Monday and Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. and continuing next Monday and Tuesday from 6-9 p.m. In order to complete the course, students must attend the first three nights.

The cost is $30 for the entire course, due the first night.

Storm said the first three nights are training nights and the last night will allow participants to practice what they have learned.

“The last three hours of the course we go through a simulation,” Storm said. “So, our instructors get into a suit that’s highly padded. We give our students a modified, like, elbow pads, knee pads, helmet. And then they get to use and go through

scenarios where they use the techniques they have learned within the course on a physical person in a controlled environment.”

Violent crime is relatively rare on the OSU campus.

In 2017, there were seven

violent crimes reported to the OSU police department, according to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting program.

That’s one for every 3,281 students. That number includes rapes and aggravated assault. The R.A.D. Systems

course is aimed at bringing that number down.

“We teach them, be aware of where your exits are,” Storm said. “It doesn’t have to be someone coming in here to sexually assault you.

It could be an active shooter, or a fire happens. Do you know where another exit is?

Can you be aware of your surroundings and identify someone who has maybe tried to steal your purse, or broken into somebody’s car?”

Storm said one of the most valuable parts of the course is the self-confidence it brings out in participants.

“For a lot of people, it brings out a self-awareness, it brings out things that they didn’t know they were fully capable of doing,” Storm

said. “Most females are not brought up in an age where they’re encouraged to do those types of activities. It’s very self-empowering. We like to see people come out of their shells and realize that they are fully capable of defending themselves, or even being vocal, because your voice is actually a selfdefense technique.”

OSU Flight Team hosts Girl Scout and Boy Scout Aviation Badge

Students on the Oklahoma State University Flight Team taught Boy Scouts and Girls Scouts about planes during their second annual Aviation Badge Day on Sunday morning.

A total of 25 kids from two Boy Scout troops and a Girl Scout troop attended the event. The students taught the scouts about the basics of how airplanes fly and everything one has to do to become a pilot. The scouts were able to tour some of the student aircraft and use the flight simulator. They made small gliders out of

styrofoam plates and had a competition with them.

The winners of the competition were allowed to ride in a plane with members of the Flight Team.

Jacob White, the cocaptain of the Flight Team, headed the event.

“We started it last year,” White said. “It’s a really simple merit badge type thing. It’s a way to give back and introduce people to aviation.”

Mesanda Prichard, the troop leader for Girl Scout Troop 7069, said she was very pleased with the Aviation Badge Day and hopes it’s something her troop can continue to do in the future.

Matt Vance, the faculty advisor for the flight team, said that he came up with the idea to do an aviation badge day last year and the students jumped on

board immediately. He and White sat down and planned what they wanted to do, but the students organized everything and ran the whole event.

“I think it’s so neat to watch young professionals start to give of their profession,” Vance said. “It’s good for the scouts and it’s good for the young adults.”

Blake Anthamatten is a member of the OSU Flight Team. This is his first year on the team, so it was his first time participating in the Aviation Badge Day. “It’s a great way for us to give back to the community,” Anthamatten said. “It’s really fun explaining what aviation can contribute to our modern

world today. In order to get the future involved in aviation, we need to share it.”

White said he hopes the team continues to host the event in the future. He wants to standardize the process of organizing the event so it will continue after he and his fellow team members graduate.

“Anyone can get into aviation,” White said.

“It’s a lot of fun. It is hard work, but anyone can do it. We want to show people that anyone can do it.”

This moment, and the dual as a whole, was a ray of light in an otherwise dark day for the OSU community.

The Cowboys defeated Iowa State 22-15 at Gallagher-Iba Arena, on the 18th anniversary of one of the worst tragedies the University has endured.

Ten people involved with its basketball program died in a plane crash near Strasburg, Colorado, Jan. 27, 2001. A memorial honoring the fallen Cowboys, often referred to

as the “Remember the Ten” memorial, sits in the lobby of Gallagher-Iba Arena, serving as a constant reminder of an event that even if they tried, the OSU community couldn’t erase from its memory.

Smith, who wrested for Stillwater High School, has been a part of the Cowboy family since the day he was born.

On Sunday, he helped them momentarily forget a tragedy they’ll never be able to.

Peter Prodanov, a son of Bulgarian immigrants, eagerly but fearfully arrived at Oklahoma State from New Jersey.

Matt Smith, who traveled from Nevada to attend OSU, described himself as an underdog.

Andrew Heaney, an Oklahoma native, said he stood at 6 feet 1 inch and only 147 pounds on the day of his first OSU workout.

None of them were automatic champions the day they set foot in Stillwater, but they developed into players with lasting impacts on the Cowboy baseball program.

Prodanov, Smith and

Heaney were inducted into the Cowboy Baseball Hall of Fame on Saturday night at the Wes Watkins Center. Their recognition occurred as part of the seventh annual First Pitch Banquet, which introduces the Cowboy baseball team to fans and donors before each season starts.

Prodanov, an OSU infielder and outfielder from 1992-95, earned All-America honors twice. As a Cowboy, he went to the 1993 College World Series and four Big Eight conference championships.

He was a professional baseball player for seven seasons.

Prodanov discussed the inspiration he found in his family, particularly his late mother.

Smith reminisced on his OSU career with a sarcastic sense of humor and gratitude for those who facilitated his

“I was a bulldog,” Smith said. “I’m not like that off the field, but I was a little crazy at times on the field, and I think that helped along the way.”

Heaney, an OSU lefthanded pitcher from 2010-12, was the Cowboys’ first Big 12 Conference Pitcher of the Year.

Heaney, who pitches for the Los Angeles Angels, said he jokingly tells people his college major was baseball.

“It was my passion,” Heaney said. “It’s what I love to do. It was all I could focus on.”

Reza Aleaziz, a Cowboy pitcher in 2018, received the Spady Award at the banquet.

The Spady family, whose son Caleb died of cancer, presents the honor each year to a baseball player who displays Caleb’s positive personality traits.

Coach Josh Holliday shared his excitement about the 2019 season and the construction of O’Brate Stadium, which is set to open in 2020 to replace Allie P. Reynolds Stadium as the Cowboys’ home.

After the event, Smith

reminisced on attending the Cowboy Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony his freshman year of college. He said he wondered then if he could achieve that honor, but he put his situation in perspective.

“I kind of had to step back a little bit and say, ‘Hey, let’s just focus on the first semester and the first season,’ but I think in the back of your mind that you have these dreams and hopes and aspirations of being a memorable player for Oklahoma State baseball,” Smith said.
