Becky Taylor sat at her desk.

The phone rang with shoppers calling to find out whether the Food and Resource Center would still be having shopping hours due to the snow that had fallen the night before. The volunteer coordinator ran into Taylor’s office to ask a question about two people who wanted to volunteer. It was only 9 a.m. on a Monday and her week had already started.

The one-year-old building was empty and quiet, aside from a few

workers who were busy preparing for the shopping day ahead. However, in three hours, there would be a line out the door filled with people waiting to receive their food for the month. Even in the cold weather, Taylor said she knew people would come.

Taylor is the executive director at Our Daily Bread (OBD), Stillwater’s food and resource center. Payne County is a food desert, which means that in some places the county struggles to have access to healthy and affordable food. This lack of access to food means povertystricken families might have no way of feed-

ing themselves or their children.

“There is a huge need in Payne County,” Taylor said. “I think because we have OSU here, it masks the high poverty rates. I think we have this dichotomy of this beautiful, well-to-do campus, but we also then have these high poverty rates.”

ODB gives Stillwater and Payne County residents the access to the healthy food they might not receive without help. Open four days a week and one Saturday every month, ODB, its staff and volunteers give families a more flexible way of seeking help than a traditional once-a-

month schedule. Twenty percent of the population of Payne County struggles with food insecurity, according to the Payne County Health Department’s Community Health Status Assessment.

The need for food assistance in the community spurred ODB’s creation. The Food and Resource Center opened Sept. 6, 2017. Oklahoma’s food insecure households average higher than the national level, while Payne County’s average is higher than Oklahoma’s rates, according to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Household Food Security in

Taylor has been a part of the organization since almost the beginning of its existence and said the organization is working hard to alleviate hunger in the community.

“I started July 1, 2017, so just a few months before we opened to serve guests,” Taylor said.

“The building’s construction was about 60 percent completed, so I helped see the tail end of that. I helped write the policies and procedures with how we were going to serve guests, and then I helped get the community support involved so that we could be successful.”

Food insecurity in America means people do not have enough reliable access to healthy food. As a food desert, families living in poverty are eating unbalanced meals resulting in high levels of obesity and comorbidities, or two existing ailments at the same time such as diabetes and heart disease. Back in 2009, Oklahoma ranked last in the nation for consuming at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, according to Oklahoma State Department of Health’s State of the County’s Health Report.

cover s t o ry obesity because the food that’s accessible to the public is not healthy food, so we have an undernourished but high calorie population. We hope to address that by making healthier food and fresh fruit and vegetables more accessible.”

Taylor said ODB relies heavily on its volunteers. The organization has four staff members, but they have about 100 volunteers on a weekly basis.

ODB’s volunteer coordinator and resource manager, Mallie Reuter, said the interactions between volunteers and guests show how the community can come together.

“I really love Our Daily Bread because there is such a balance between working on our guest and volunteer relationships and being able to mesh them so perfectly,” Reuter said.

“Being hungry is not uncommon unfortunately, and hunger is something everyone could experience. I think the beauty is having our really awesome donors work with our guest who are equally as awesome.”

Doug Valley, a volunteer warehouse manager, said the food and resource center has reached more families as time goes by. Before ODB opened, he worked in the storehouse to provide families with food.

“When we had the storehouse, we would serve about 350 families a month,” Valley said.

over 1,100 families, so it is helping a lot more people.”

Some of the volunteers that work at ODB come from churches and ministry groups. The organization gives those looking to help the community a way to do so.

Les Hix, a volunteer, said he had retired and needed to find a way to fill his free time with volunteer options through his church.

“Most of these people are church members someplace,” Hix said.

“We have a lot from the Methodist Church, but there’s also the Baptist, the Church of Christ, the first Christian Church and the Catholic church.

I’m sure there are other churches represented too.”

Taylor said she is proud of all that ODB has accomplished in the short time it has been open, and how many people they have been able to serve. She said she wants Oklahoma State University students to know that ODB is not only there for them to receive volunteer hours.

“If anyone knows of a friend that needs help, bring them, and come shop together,” Taylor said. “I want to make sure students know we exist for them as well, and not only as community service, volunteer hours, or research for papers. We are also here if they need help with food.”

“We are so community involved,” Reuter said. “We have OSU, and that’s a huge blessing because we have a constant flow of students who want to come and get hours. We are in a great position to keep growing and feeding.”

Staff and volunteers like Reuter said Taylor is the driving force at ODB and a joy to work with.

“Becky is the girl with the dream and the vision,” Reuter said.

The organization is working on new projects to bring more to the community. It’s constructing a larger garden to provide fresh produce,

as well as having diabetes classes and physical activity classes offered to its guests.

“We have a lot in the works, and that’s an element we will be working on in 2019,” Taylor said.

collaborative approach to ODB, and it’s really the community having their hands involved that helps us become successful.”

With the new year comes a new semester and fresh starts.

Make sure to start the spring semester off right and give your dorm, apartment or house a good spring cleaning.

1. Start from the ground up In some cultures it is considered good luck to sweep, and because it’s a new semester, try to get all the good luck possible.

Give your floors a deep clean. Mop and sweep hardwood and tile floors and vacuum out rugs and carpet. It is also a good idea to take rugs

and shake the debris out.

If you live in a small dorm and do not have a broom, mop or vacuum, then do not be afraid to ask your neighbors to borrow theirs.

2. Clean out closets and feel good about it

Start fresh and wash all your clothes and seriously evaluate what clothes you do not wear anymore.

Rather than sitting in front of your closet and spending hours debating which clothes to get rid of, put all your hangers one way and flip them the other way when you wear those clothes. At the end of the month get rid of the clothes on the hangers you did not flip.

Consider donating or reselling the clothes you decide to get rid of. Not only will it be better than just throwing your stuff away, but you can also feel better knowing you helped someone.

There are multiple donation and resell centers around Stillwater. Good Will, Elite Repeat and Habitat for Humanity ReStore are just a few examples of good places to donate or resell your clothes.

3. Make your bed and lie in it How long has it been since you washed your sheets and blankets? Now is the perfect time to clean all the pillow cases, blankets, sheets and other items you may not wash

4. Clean your electronics Cleaning TVs, computers and other devices can be a pain, but it’s important to not forget about them.

Try cleaning screens with the bottom of a coffee filter.

Coffee filters catch dust and don’t leave any annoying chemical streaks or damage.

Be sure to clean out any old files you don’t need anymore off your computer. During the semester it’s common for files to build up and take up space on your hard drive. Syllabus week is an ideal time to look through old files and find out what you can get rid of. That anatomy essay from eighth grade? You probably don’t need it anymore.

Along with getting rid of files, play it safe and back up the important files you do need.

As the apostle says; “His grace issufficient.” (2 Co.12:9) First, we should turn to the Lord. Humble ourselves and ask for his help. He has promised grace (help) to the humble. assurance is that he will be faithful and help. This will save us from a lot of heartache. It is so easy, with so many, to default and give into insults, disappointments, and therefore to self-pity and hurt feelings that lead to bitterness and unforgiveness. Through God’s son, Jesus Christ, we can receive the Lord’s help. He will encourage, comfort and counsel you and me. “Never pay back evil for more evil. Do things insuch a way that everyone can see you are honorable. Do all to live in peace with everyone. Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.” (Ro.12:19,21 NLT) Let’s turn to Christ first. Let’s choose his way.

He will be our help inwardly and outwardly. Then we will be a blessing to others and not a source of hurt that will affect many!

With the 2018 college football season officially over, it’s time to look ahead to 2019.

For Oklahoma State football fans, this is probably seen as a good thing.

The Cowboys’ 2018 season was a constant teeter totter, balancing between great wins and even worse losses. It resulted in a mediocre 7-6 record. It’s clear for the Cowboys to get back to being in the Big 12 title picture, which has become the norm under head coach Mike Gundy, they will need to be drastically better in 2019.

Here’s a way-too-early look at the 2019 Cowboys’ offense:

Quarterbacks This position was talked about more than any other throughout the 2018 season, yet OSU started the same player every game.

It will be talked about just as much entering the 2019 campaign.

Now that Taylor Cornelius has graduated, it appears the Spencer Sanders era has arrived.

Sanders was a four-star recruit out of Ryan High School in Denton, Texas.

He redshirted the 2018 season at OSU after being named the 2017-18 Gatorade State Player of the Year in Texas. Sanders is a dual threat quarterback who won his final 30 regular-season games at quarterback in high school.

He will be challenged for the job by Dru Brown, a transfer from Hawaii who will be in his final year of eligibility. Brendan Costello, a three-star recruit from San Clemente, California will enroll in January and partake in spring practices. It’s hard to see him having a chance at the starting job, however. The quarterback position will be advertised as a competition entering spring and fall camp, but it’s hard to imagine anyone but Sanders winning the job.

Running Backs Even with Justice Hill leaving for the NFL and J.D. King transferring, the running back position looks promising next season.

Chuba Hubbard stepped up in a big way after Justice Hill’s injury against Oklahoma. Hubbard started the final three games of the year and appears to be the No. 1 back entering 2019. He rushed for 145 yards and a touchdown in the Cowboys’ bowl victory against Missouri.

Not far behind him on the depth chart is LD Brown, who battled injuries this season but has stamped his name on the depth chart behind Hubbard. Brown has really good straight-line speed and has the potential to be a nice counterpart to Hubbard.

A newcomer to watch at this position will be Jahmyl Jeter. Jeter redshirted the 2018 season. He was

a three-star recruit from San Antonio, Texas, and has good size, weighing in around 210 pounds. Gundy likes to get multiple backs involved in the offense, so someone other than Hubbard and Brown will need to step up and secure that No. 3 spot on the depth chart.

Wide Receivers Production wise, this is the best unit returning offensively for OSU next season. It’s really not close either.

Headlining this group is Tylan Wallace, who was a Biletnikoff finalist this season. Not far behind him is Tyron Johnson, who seemed to get better by the week and was his best in the Cowboys’ biggest games. Wallace and Johnson combined for 14 catches, 224 yards and three touchdowns against Missouri. They’re one of the better one-two combos at wide receiver returning in all of college football.

In the slot, the Cowboys return both Dillon Stoner and Landon Wolf. Stoner currently has a team-high streak of 25 consecutive games with a catch.

C.J. Moore is someone to potentially watch for in 2019. Moore redshirted the 2018 season but was a highly-touted recruit coming out of Union High School in Tulsa. He is cousins with former OSU receiver Tracy Moore.

Who knows what will happen with the new offensive coordinators’ system, but this group has the potential to have some playmakers in the passing game going forward.

Jelani Woods, who came to OSU as a quarterback before switching to cowboy back, continued to improve his pass-catching ability this season. He stands 6 feet 7 inches tall and has the potential to be a threat, especially in the red zone.

It’ll be interesting to see how Grayson Boomer meshes with this unit in his first season as well. Boomer is 6 feet 5

inches tall and weighs 230 pounds. He is a four-star recruit out of Collinsville, Oklahoma. His long, athletic frame could potentially be a weapon in the Cowboys’ passing attack.

Logan Carter also returns at this position and will be the primary blocking-cowboy back entering 2019.

Offensive Line For OSU to succeed in 2019, this unit has to be exponentially better than it was this season.

The performance of the offensive line wasn’t always bad, but it was too inconsistent at times. Position coach Josh Henson has put a major emphasis on recruiting up front the

past couple classes. It is yet to be seen if some of these youngsters, such as Bryce Bray out of Bixby, Oklahoma, or possibly Hunter Anthony from Tuttle, Oklahoma, will contribute in 2019.

The good news is OSU returns nearly everyone from the two-deep this season, except for Deionte Noel and Shane Richards.

On the other side of that, the returners will need to improve quite a bit for the Cowboys’ record to improve.
