Coach Jim Littell and the Oklahoma State women’s basketball team are trusting the process.

OSU finished last season with a 17-15 record after losing to Texas in the second round of the Big 12 Championship and then losing to Abilene Christian in the opening round of the Women’s National Invitational Tournament.

Now, with a veteran front court in seniors Kaylee Jensen and Mandy Coleman, the Cowgirls are preparing for a nonconference schedule filled with contenders, including Tennessee, MissisFRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2017

Unlike last year, OSU now has some depth coming off the bench, which could be a factor during the season.

“A year ago, we had no depth,” Littell said. “We had to play kids too many minutes. When they weren’t guarding, I didn’t have the luxury of taking some people out. The depth and the competition during practice are very healthy things I’m looking forward to. It’s enabling us to get better as a basketball team.”

In addition to working on defense and energy during practice, the Cowgirls have

put an emphasis on competition and building a winning mindset.

“We really concentrate here on the process,” Littell said. “It’s a daily process.

What are you doing to get better as an individual? What are we doing to get better as a team? When that happens, I think everything will take care of itself. I know Coach (Mike) Gundy talks about the culture, and we’ve been trying to get the culture where you go hard every day, you push each other every day.”

Last season featured an awry ending for the Oklahoma State wrestling team.

Despite finishing the regular season with a 14-1 dual record and the program’s 51st Big 12 conference title, a loss in the NWCA Dual Finals to No. 2 Penn State in front of a record crowd at Gallagher-Iba Arena and a third-place finish at the NCAA tournament capped the Cowboys’ season.

Although the team finish was underwhelming

with a perfect 32-0 record and a 15-0 dual mark that led to his second consecutive national title and the 142nd individual title in program history. Heil was named Big 12 Wrestler of the Year and returns for his senior season, looking to become only the 17th wrestler in OSU history to win three individual titles.

Coming into a season as a defending national champion is no new challenge for Heil, but he is learning to serve a different role within the locker room this season.

“Last year, we had multiple seniors who did a pretty good job of (serving as leaders),” Heil said. “This

year, we don’t have any other senior in the lineup outside of me, as of right now. I’m just doing the best that I can to be there for my team, kinda take that leadership aspect.”

Coach John Smith brings perhaps one of the youngest teams of his 27-year tenure into the 2017-18 season, and he explained that having a fifth-year senior and two-time defending national champion fill that leadership role will assist the team during the season.

“He’s taken a real leadership role, and we needed it,” Smith said. “I think one thing that’s nice about Dean is he wants to have a successful team. He’s trying

to do something that only a handful of athletes have done in wrestling by winning three national championships.”

At 141 pounds, Heil enters his senior season on a 41-match win streak, second to only Penn State’s Zain Retherford.

Although OSU returns Heil and five other AllAmericans, the uncertainty lies within the youth of the team. Ten true freshmen and eight wrestlers coming off a redshirt year provide the potential for some new faces to be competing on the mat for the Cowboys this year.

headline the front of the lineup, with All-Americans Nick Piccininni, Kaid Brock and Heil expected to get starts at 125, 133 and 141 pounds, respectively.

Junior Chandler Rogers is expected to get the start at 165.

Junior college transfer and redshirt junior Jacobe Smith is expected to start at 174 pounds, a weight that Smith called the toughest weight in the country.

The Cowboys will look to overcome some inexperience at 197 with AllAmerican Preston Weigel expected to be out until at least January because of an undisclosed injury.

The middle and end of

the lineup is still uncertain at 149, 157, 184 and heavyweight. All-American Joe Smith, who started for the Cowboys at 157 pounds the past two season, will redshirt.

Although the Cowboys are young, they are loaded with talent.

“It’s a good team,” Smith said. “We’ll have a pretty competitive team. I’m not sure that we really drop off any (from last year).”

Hansen said he knew from the age of 12 that he wanted to be in the Marine Corps. He quickly rose through the ranks and received an opportunity to go to college to become a commissioned officer. As an officer, Hansen chose to remain in the infantry and eventually commanded three Marine companies, which he calls the greatest experience of his life.

Hansen describes his time at OSU as the second best job he’s ever had and enjoys working with younger veterans.

Cole feels a special connection to both transfer and veteran students. Cole is especially glad to see the students she works with achieve their goals and believes she receives as much motivation from them as they do from her.

Cole started her enlisted service in the United States Air Force as a security police officer before being cross-trained for special actions under personnel. She was serving as a staff sergeant when she decided to get a college

Each flag represents a military service member who gave his or her life in our nation’s defense during the Global War on Terror. Dog tags are also placed on each flag and embossed with the name, rank, branch of service and home of record for each of the fallen military service members.
