There are 6,955 American flags planted in the grass of Library Lawn.

These flags represent more than a cool photo opportunity for your Snapchat story. These flags represent 6,955 heroes who sacrificed their lives fighting for this country since Sept.

11, 2001.

Each year, we are reminded of the sacrifices these brave men and women made. Veterans Day is a time to reflect and to give thanks. But honoring veterans should not be reserved solely for Veterans Day. We should strive to recognize the sacrifice of these individuals every day.

The planting of the flags on Library Lawn is a special moment every year. It was one of the first stories I wrote for the O’Colly, but it remains one of the most memorable.

It was Nov. 8, 2016, and volunteers were lining the grass with the flags. I remember feeling a wave of emotions when I first saw the display. I took a photo with my phone and sent it to my grandfather. My grandfather served in the United States Air Force from 1966 to 1972, and I knew the picture would make him smile.

In the text, I said, “Hey, Papa. People on campus were setting

up flags in front of the library today for Veterans Day, and it made me think of u. Love u. See u soon.”

He responded a few minutes later, likely because he was at work, and his reply makes me smile to this day.

“Wow. Super cool.

Love U2. Miss U.” It was a simple text, but I knew it meant a lot to him, and it meant a lot to me. One of my favorite things growing up was listening to my grandfather tell stories.

We would talk for hours about his time in the Air Force. He’s a great storyteller with more than enough stories to fill the pages of a book, but it’s those little conversations I’ll cherish most.

Sometimes just being there to listen can mean a lot. If there are veterans in your family or community, I encourage you to reach out to them and just listen. Give them the opportunity to talk, to offer advice and to vent. We often get so caught up in our lives that we forget to take a step back and be the people who listen.

On that cold November day in 2016, I spoke to Rick Hansen, coordinator of Veteran Student Academic Services at OSU, about his involvement with the display.

eral people who walked past Library Lawn. He answered their questions and happily gave them a few flags to place.

Hansen is a veteran, and he said he knew when he was 12 that he wanted to be in the Marine Corps.

I asked Hansen what the flags display meant to him, and his answer has stuck with me since.

“Each flag means I’ve lost one of my brothers or sisters,” Hansen said.

The heroes who served our country are the reason I’m free to write this story. In such a divisive political climate, it’s important to honor those who fought for our right to have political discourse.

Every year on Nov. 11, the 19.6 million former and active service

members are honored.

Speeches, parades and ceremonies offer a nation’s appreciation, but there are so many more ways to honor these individuals than simply saying “thank you for your service.”

Let them know they matter. Listen to their stories. Share their stories. Volunteer at your local VA office.

Offer support to veterans who suffer from posttraumatic stress disorder.

The National Center for PTSD provides a Veterans Crisis Line at 1-8008255 and through text at 838255. Do whatever you can to help those who served or are currently serving.

to take a moment and reflect. Talk to people there. Spark conversations, and keep those conversations going.

Our support of service members shouldn’t be reserved to a few days out of the year; it should

be a constant, year-long effort.

For the second game in a row, rebounding played a huge role in Oklahoma State’s victory.

The Cowgirl basketball team crashed the boards all afternoon in its 76-51 blowout of University of California, Riverside. OSU outrebounded the Highlanders by 13 on Sunday in Gallagher-Iba Arena.

Jim Littell, OSU’s coach, has stressed the importance of winning the ball after missed shots.

“I’ve always told our group that rebounding is the most important facet of the game,” Littell said. “It’s just about having a motor and wanting to

go get it.”

Half of OSU’s 46 rebounds were offensive, giving the Cowgirls 12 more chances at the basket than the Highlanders.

“I’m really pleased about having 23 offensive boards,” Littell said. “This program has always hit it hard about getting more and better shots than your opponents.”

Sophomore Vivian Gray contributed six of those offensive rebounds.

“For our team, we need to get a lot of rebounds from our big guards like me, Braxtin (Miller), and LaTashia (Jones),” Gray said. “They preached that in practice a lot this week, and I think that we followed through with that.”

rebounding performances in Friday’s game against Arkansas State and in Sunday’s tilt with UC Riverside was the number of Cowgirls involved.

Friday, Jones went above and beyond with 21 rebounds, but Sunday, five Cowgirls had at least three.

“I think we all crashed the boards really well,” Gray said.

“It wasn’t just one person like last game. Today we had a lot of people go to the boards, which gave us more opportunities.”

Another young Cowgirl adding to OSU’s rebounding strength is 6-foot-3-inch center Kassidy De Lapp.

De Lapp, a freshman, had six rebounds Sunday, four of which were offensive.

Sophomore guard Braxtin Miller said if the Cowgirls maintain their strength rebounding, then that will open a lot of doors for them the rest of the season.

“I think (rebounding) is huge,” Miller said. “I think that will contribute to a lot.

Maybe one of us only gets a few one game, but someone will get a bunch if we’re all crashing. I think that momentum and having that knowledge and keep doing well in that is going to play a huge part in being able to go into games.”

Takeoff became the second Migos member to record a solo album with his debut effort “The Last Rocket,” released Nov. 2.

The album dropped three weeks after group mate Quavo’s disappointing debut “Quavo Huncho.”

“The Last Rocket” is different from a typical Migos project. Takeoff keeps the album short.

It comes in at just more than 35 minutes. The shorter length strips the album of the filler and fluff that populates a lot of the trio’s records.

The typical trap stylings are present throughout the album, but they’re subdued.

The hi-hats don’t rattle with as much ferocity as albums like “Culture,” and Takeoff strays into unfamiliar territory on songs like “Infatuation.”

The backing tracks weave together in a thematic way that takes the listener on an expansive journey, befitting the album title.

When Takeoff makes a solo record, he emphasizes the solo aspect.

He carries the load of the album by himself aside from Quavo’s appearance on “She Gon Wink” and the unknown Dayytona Fox’s impressive performance on “Infatuation.” The lack of features lets Takeoff show off his skills without getting lost in a sea

Takeoff is fairly good lyrically on “The Last Rocket.” Fans won’t ever confuse him for Kendrick Lamar or MF Doom, but Takeoff will surprise on tracks like “Casper” and “Soul Plane.” The song topics are varied and play off each other just like the beats. “Martian” and “She Gon Wink” act as companions to each other, as do “Lead The Wave” and “Casper.”

In “Infatuation,” Takeoff softens up a bit and raps to a significant other. “None To Me” is a typical “forget the haters” type of track that samples a YouTube video titled “Elders React To Migos.”

There are a few minor problems with the album. The hooks are simple. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing for a mainstream radio staple like Takeoff, but

the two-word hook on “I Remember” is mindnumbing and takes up too much of the song.

It’s hard to decipher what Takeoff is saying far too often on this record. Usually that would be a good thing on a Migos record, but Takeoff’s lyrics are worth hearing.

“The Last Rocket” is a good record. It is a more developed and polished album than the first Migos member’s solo effort “Quavo Huncho.”

The spacey and thematic backing tracks allow Takeoff freedom to experiment and showcase his skills. “The Last Rocket” shows there is a lot of potential in Takeoff as a solo artist.
