Halloween is around the corner, and Oklahoma State University’s Symphony Orchestra is ready to get in spirit.

The Symphony Orchestra will kick off its second familyfriendly “Halloween Pops” concert at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Seretean Center Concert Hall.

Last year was the first time the Symphony Orchestra hosted “Halloween Pops.” The concert offers live music and a costume contest for people of all ages.

“The turnout was great,” said Thomas Dickey, director of orchestral studies. “We had some wonderful costumes in the costume contest, and the audience seemed to really like hearing the music we had to offer.”

The event will feature music focused on Halloween and pop culture associated with the holiday, Dickey said.

“It’s a chance for people who probably don’t ordinarily come to our concerts to hear us play Beethoven and Tchaikovsky, to come hear us play Harry Potter and Wicked,” Dickey said.

Matthew Glover, associate conductor of OSU’s symphony orchestra, said he hopes that this event will draw in a variety of people.

“The great thing about a pops program is the aim is not only to people who enjoy listening to live music but it’s also to kind of bring in the crowd that isn’t always coming to our concerts,” Glover said.

about the instruments and how to play them.

Thomas Neely, a violinist in the Symphony Orchestra, participated in last year’s instrument petting zoo and show.

“Last year was our first year of doing the petting zoo in the Halloween Pops concert, so we weren’t sure how it (would turn out), but it turned out great,” Neely said.

The event has something for everyone, Neely said.

“It’s a nice little blend of something entertaining for the kids and something really beneficial for the musicians as well in the orchestra,” Neely said.

“Halloween Pops” is constructed to draw in families and expose younger children to classical music, Dickey said.

OSU senior and principle flute chair Azzarea TureaudBorin is participating in the event for the first time and said she is excited about its concept.

“I think it’s also cool to show a different side of orchestral music to our younger audience and get them involved,” Tureaud-Borin said.

“I think it’s a really accessible concert because we are playing so many pieces that people recognize from movies,” Mui said. “We would love to see a full house of families.”

The concert will last about an hour, so participants can get home at a reasonable time, Dickey said.

People can buy tickets in advance. They are $10 general admission and $7 for students and seniors in the Music Department Office (132 Seretean Center) or online at www. music.okstate.edu until 4 p.m.

A homecoming week full of festivities kicked off with a tailgate for Oklahoma State University students.

Monday, the Campus Life committee hosted a tailgate event outside at the Village Courtyard near Kerr-Drummond. It featured free food, music, games and prizes.

Although the Oklahoma State football team lost three of its past four games, coach Mike Gundy reiterated in his press conference Monday that major personnel changes aren’t coming for the Cowboys.

“I think that people that say that (about position changes) are being somewhat unrealistic,” Gundy said.

“If there were other guys we thought we needed to look at, we would’ve already done that. This far into the season, we’ve been at it August, September, half

of October, so 10 weeks into it we pretty much know who we have out there. The guys that we’re working, we’re trying to get them ready for the next game.”

Gundy’s commitment to Taylor Cornelius at quarterback hasn’t wavered all season, and that continued on Monday.

“I think he’ll (Cornelius) be fine,” Gundy said. “If we didn’t think that, we wouldn’t start him.”

‘I thought it was pretty cool’ Saturday is homecoming, and OSU is going back in time with

its uniforms. OSU’s athletic department released pictures Monday morning showcasing the 1988 throwback uniforms the Cowboys will wear against Texas.

“I thought it was pretty cool,” Gundy said. “They (the athletic department) put a lot of work into it. … I didn’t think they showed enough of me in the video, but other than that I thought it was pretty good (laughs).”

This year’s homecoming has palpable buzz surrounding it in part because Barry Sanders, along with his offensive linemen from his historic 1988 Heisman Trophy-winning season,

are the grand marshals of the homecoming parade.

Monday, Gundy expressed his excitement about seeing his former teammates.

“We’re in the process of trying to change the way we think around here of displaying our success,” Gundy said.

“There’s a lot of history in this program over the last 12-14 years and even more so when you have arguably the greatest running back or player to ever play this game and the group that was with him. We’re working in that direction, and I think it’s nice to get those guys back.”

Parents and playing time During the Kansas State game, Twitter was ablaze after Spencer Sanders’ mom sent a tweet asking for her son to get a chance. Gundy was asked about the tweet Monday.

“I was made aware of that because as you know, good news travels fast (chuckles),” Gundy said. “Every mama loves their boy.

They want them to play more, get more carries or they want them to get more catches, whatever it may be.

The only difference in anything happening in society today compared

to how it’s happened ever is now you have a way to make it public.

But those things have gone on forever.

“It doesn’t mean anyone is right or wrong …

I would rather deal with the players directly …

I know when I went to school, I didn’t call my mom and dad and ask them to call the coach. Because my dad would’ve told me to stick it in my ass and take care of it yourself.”
