You walk down the dark tunnel, and the sound of the roaring crowd outside creeps up with every step.

You hear the unfamiliar sound of Kurt Russell’s character in “Tombstone” yell, “You tell em’ I’m coming! And hell’s coming with me, you hear?

Hell’s coming with me!”

It’s your first time donning America’s brightest orange on the field at Boone Pickens Stadium.

You are a freshman on the Oklahoma State football team, and your nerves are at an all-time high.

Everyone has nerves once in a while. Usually, it has to do with “firsts” in life. First date, first day of college, first day of work, at some point, you’re going to feel nervous.

Football players feel those nerves as well.

Redshirt freshman Bryce Bray, who played in his first game last week against Oregon State, said his nerves will continue into OSU’s home opener against McNeese State on Saturday.

“The first home game will definitely be nerve racking for sure because you got all your friends here, your family here,” Bray said. “It will be a

little more nerve racking just ‘cause you have so many people that know you.”

Bray said that one player stood out in making sure his nerves were calmed: Chuba Hubbard.

sophomore, has been one of coach Mike Gundy’s vocal leaders this season.

The running back from Calgary, Alberta, seems to take the nerves out of almost every player.

“He’s a great leader,” Bray said. “Absolutely

hands down one of the best leaders we have on this team. He takes that into his own hands in being able to lead each one of us.”

Last week before OSU’s game against Oregon State, Hubbard sat Spencer Sanders down to calm the quarterback’s nerves ahead of his first career start. Sanders said he had butterflies in his stomach prior to the game, but Hubbard kept talking to him and calming him down.

One of the most important things to Hubbard as a leader on the team is making sure the players are calm and collected.

“I just try to talk to all my guys and make sure they’re ready,” Hubbard said. “Everyone has jitters, especially the first game of the season no matter if you’re a senior or junior or whatever.”

Whether it’s your first game in a Cowboy uniform or last time gearing up for a home opener, if you have pregame nerves, Hubbard can quiet them down quickly.

“I just want to make sure everyone was good and know we’re on the same page, that let’s just come out there strong,” Hubbard said.

Malcolm Rodriguez’s uncertainty faded after a few days.

Rodriguez, a junior on the Oklahoma State football team, said his coaches shifted him from safety to linebacker with about two weeks left in fall camp. Although he was willing to learn so he could help his team, he wasn’t fully comfortable during his first reps in a new spot on the field after starting 10 games at safety the previous year.

“At first, I was kind of hesitant, didn’t know what to do,” Rodriguez

said.

Then he settled into his position in practice and, after the quick adjustment period, started as a linebacker in OSU’s season opener victory at Oregon State.

“I was definitely a lot closer to the line, so you definitely gotta be a little quicker in your decision making,” Rodriguez said. “But other than that, it felt good.”

He moved in front of the secondary to replace Calvin Bundage, a senior linebacker who is recovering from a back strain and didn’t travel with the Cowboys to Oregon State.

Sunday, coach Mike Gundy tweeted a graphic showing Rodriguez as the Cowboys’ defensive MVP. The honor was the result of Rodriguez’s commitment to studying his new responsibilities.

To adapt to the transition, Rodriguez reviewed the defense’s formations, making sure he knew where to line up and which gaps to cover. He talked through scenarios with defensive coordina-

tor Jim Knowles and Shane Eachus, an OSU graduate assistant and linebackers coach.

Rodriguez also learned from linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga, who racked up a team-high 10 tackles against Oregon State.

Rodriguez said fending off approaching offensive linemen is the biggest change, but as a two-time wrestling state champion at Wagoner High School, he is accustomed to using shifty techniques to grapple with brawny foes.

“Definitely just that natural habit came out of me,” Rodriguez said.

“Your eyes gotta be in the right place,” Rodriguez said. “And if you kind of eye delay, you’re gonna miss a gap, and they’re gonna hit you for a big gain.”

When Rodriguez switched positions, redshirt sophomore Tre Sterling filled the vacancy at safety. Rodriguez praised Sterling’s ability to make plays across the field, and Sterling complimented Rodriguez’s versatility.

“He’s such an athletic dude, he can play either safety or linebacker,” Sterling said. “Coach Knowles uses that to his advantage and just switches him around constantly. It’s good for

him.”

Despite Rodriguez’s willingness to move, the defense is a work in progress as OSU prepares to face McNeese State at 6 p.m. Saturday in Boone Pickens Stadium. Against Oregon State, the Cowboys gave up 448 yards and forced no turnovers.

Rodriguez said on-field communication is a skill he needs to polish, but learning an unfamiliar position is no longer a concern.

“I’ve pretty much got the grasp of everything,” Rodriguez said.

“There’s still a couple questions in there for funky situations, but other than that, I’m good.”

There are two words synonymous with the last name Orgeron: football and Louisiana.

Ed Orgeron leads sixth-ranked LSU, and his two sons, Cody and Parker, play a prominent role on a successful FCS team: McNeese State, located in Lake Charles, Louisiana, and Oklahoma State’s opponent for its home opener Saturday.

Cody, McNeese’s starting quarterback, only played one year of high school football.

He was a two-time state champion on the tennis court before

transferring his skills over to the gridiron.

In Cody’s first and only season in high school, he led Mandeville High School to a 10-4 record and a spot in the second round of the state playoffs.

After high school, Cody decided to go to McNeese State, where his family has a history.

While at McNeese, he decided to continue with football and earned a spot on the roster as a walk-on. As with most walk-ons, Cody started low on the depth chart. After three years of proving himself, however, Cody earned his position as McNeese’s starting

quarterback.

“He was the sixthstring quarterback at McNeese State,” Orgeron said. “He earned a scholarship and now is the starting quarterback. So we’re very, very proud of him.”

Cody blended his passing and running abilities last week in McNeese’s 34-28 victory over Southern. He had 147 passing yards, 33 rushing yards and two touchdowns.

Orgeron attributes Cody’s success to his keen memory and love for football.

“Well we talk about football a lot,” the coach said. “Cody has a component of a photographic memory, he’s

very smart. We love football.”

Ed Orgeron and Cody keep in contact every day, despite their hectic schedules.

“You know we get in the office about 6 o’clock in the morning, we leave about 10 o’clock at night,” Orgeron said. “But I’ll find little pockets of the day to give him a little text or a little call, that’s very important.”

Cody’s brother Parker is another key member for McNeese State.

“My other twin boy, Parker, started at wide receiver for McNeese State for three years,” Orgeron said. “He’s had five concussions so

he can’t play now.”

Although injuries derailed his career, Parker still remains with the team as a student coach. The two Orgeron boys have a big task ahead of them in the Cowboys. Orgeron, who was a graduate assistant for McNeese in 1985, thinks that McNeese needs to stick to the basics if it wants to upset OSU in Stillwater.

“They’ve got to be fundamentally sound,” Orgeron said. “Obviously they’re playing a great team in Oklahoma State. They’re going in hostile territory, so you’ve got to take care of the ball.

Orgeron also referenced a 2014 game when thinking about McNeese-related upsets.

“Several years ago, I watched McNeese State go to Nebraska and almost upset them, and I’m not saying that’s going to happen, but they’ve got to go play their style of football,” Orgeron said. ”Obviously they’ve got to protect the quarterback.

On defense, they’ve got to stop a very potent offense. Deal with a hostile crowd, but not get too nervous, just go play a good style of football and see what happens.”

Mike Gundy wants to get back to smash mouth football.

Last Friday, Oklahoma State’s offensive line parted Oregon State’s defense like the red sea, giving Chuba Hubbard a massive alley straight to the end zone.

Hubbard, a former track star, saw nothing but daylight as he easily sprinted to the end zone for a 53-yard touchdown.

It all started up front.

Although Hubbard, wide receiver Tylan Wallace and quarterback Spencer Sanders deservedly received a lot of spotlight, the unsung heroes of the offense were the guys up front.

Behind the line, OSU rushed for 352 yards, and Sanders was protected well for most of the night.

After watching the tape, Gundy was highly impressed with how the offensive line started the year.

“Everyone has to be careful about being on the Kool-Aid early,” Gundy said. “But it was the highest grade we’ve had from an offensive line group since I’ve been the head coach.”

The line came into the year with pretty

high expectations.

With a lot of shuffling going on throughout the past season, there’s expected to be much more consistency up front in 2019.

Three of the five linemen, Johnny Wilson, Teven Jenkins and Marcus Keyes, have played a ton of snaps in their careers. Left tackle Dylan Galloway was thrown in last year against some of the conference’s best.

The only one without experience is redshirt freshman Bryce Bray at right guard.

Along with experience, the group’s intelligence and recognition are key factors.

One extra complication for OSU’s offensive linemen is learning how to play up-tempo. Last season, the Cowboys snapped the ball before the defense was set on more than 30% of their running plays.

Although this would ideally be an advantage, Gundy said recognizing your blocking assignments when they aren’t in place is harder than it seems.

“Guys that have played know even though (the defender’s) not set he’s coming to this position so he and I are working from him to the backer,” Gundy said. “Versus a young guy that doesn’t have anybody there and he

says, ‘Well I don’t have anybody there so I can just go to the backer.

“For that fact, those guys can recognize and do a lot on the run with us playing with a lot of speed.”

Although it has had talent at running back, OSU has been known recently for its high powered passing attacks.

But when Gundy first became head coach, while not as flamboyant an offense, the team’s emphasis was physicality up front and rushing the football.

He’d like to see the team get back to that, and Friday’s game made it seem as if the Cowboys were heading back in that direction.

“The way that we built this program in the early days, that’s kind of what my goal is as a team,” Gundy said. “Then to integrate what we’ve done with throwing the ball down the field and then kind of find a happy medium based on our talent.

“If you can get anywhere near rushing for 250 yards a game you’re a dang good running football team.

Particularly to start the year with who we are as a team, it was about as good as I could ever want.”

Controversy answered at ‘That Damn Art Woman’ D R U N O RTON staff reporter @o c olly

The controversial art exhibit “That Damn Art Woman” was on display until Thursday at The Gardiner Art Gallery in the Bartlett Center for the Visual Arts.

The exhibit centers on the controversy about who designed the historic Boston Avenue Methodist Episcopal Church South in Tulsa. It features drawings, letters, newspaper articles, art and other

documents relating to the people and events.

Studio art senior Taylor Graham worked with Teresa Holder, the art manager of the Gardiner Gallery, on the exhibition. Graham said the argument surrounding who designed the church is what drew her interest.

“This is a controversy piece because a lot of people in the art and architectural world have this disagreement about who actually designed this church,” Graham said. “The church has always

stood by the reiteration that Adah Robinson designed it. In the architectural world, most people believe Bruce Goff designed the church.”

Graham said the exhibit was named “That Damn Art Woman” because an architect at the firm Adah Robinson worked at would refer to her that way, mainly because he didn’t like working with a woman.

“If you start following the story line in the exhibit, you will see Adah develops the

design of the church,” Graham said. “But towards the end, you see that after the church was built, Bruce gets credited as the designer.”

Graham said Holder worked hard to put the exhibit together.

“Teresa examined these questions of who really built this church and then went back in history to find all of the papers and facts that showed how Adah played into this,” Graham said. “She researched and went to multiple museums to

dig up this history.”

Graham said one of her favorite artifacts from the exhibit is the century chest.

“This century chest was buried underground for a hundred years,” Graham said.

“It was dug up in 2013, but Adah’s painting was inside from 1913.

The art league bought a section of the time capsule, and Adah’s painting was one of only three art pieces in the time capsule.”

After being involved with Holder and the unearthing of infor-

mation regarding the exhibit, Graham was excited to see all the hard work come together. For Graham, the most rewarding part of helping with the exhibit was seeing the finished product.

“I saw how hard Teresa had worked coming up with all of this information, and then we had to make these panels for each artifact,” Graham said.

“It was really incredible to see everything come together.”

Stillwater Mayor Will Joyce has responded via Twitter to the federal warrants issued at Palomino’s and El Vaquero on Wednesday, clarifying the details of the events that took place.

Joyce tweeted a 16-tweet thread around noon Thursday.

“I replied in a few cases to provide what clarifying information I could, but I wanted to provide a bit more information for those interested,” Joyce tweeted. “According to the US Attorney’s office, Federal agents from the Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) unit of DHS along with US Marshals and a larger Federal task force, served search warrants at the location in Stillwater as part of a criminal investigation. The US Attorney has not released any further information about the underlying criminal allegations.

“Based on local reports, several individuals were detained and interviewed as part of the warrant investigations. Most of these people were released later in the day, with a small number remain-

ing in Federal custody based on outstanding Federal warrants or prior deportation. SPD officers were present to observe the warrant service, as they would be for any Federal or state police action in our community. Some of the HSI interviews were conducted at municipal facilities, but SPD is not involved in the investigation, detention or arrests.”

Joyce continues, explaining Immigration and Customs Enforcement was not in Stillwater during the investigations Wednesday.

“While these operations were ongoing yesterday, I was concerned that multiple reports were being made that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was raiding businesses in town, including several false reports about businesses not involved at all,” Joyce tweeted.

“In discussing the issue with our local officials, I was informed that this was not the case, and that neither the investigation nor service of the warrants was being conducted by ICE. The distinction is important in that this was not an immigration enforcement action primarily seeking to detain undocumented people in

Stillwater, but rather a specific investigation of criminal activity.

I replied to a few Facebook and Twitter posts to convey this information and assuage fears of widespread raids.”

Joyce also clarified Stillwater Police Department police officers were present to observe the warrant service, as they would be for any Federal or state police action in Stillwater. Some of the HSI interviews were conducted at municipal facilities, but “SPD is not involved in the investigation, detention or arrests.”

Joyce concluded his thread by tweeting “everyone in our community deserves protection and respect.”

Cowgirls revert to old ways to keep undefeated start alive SAM LAN E staff reporter @samlan eOk

Through its first three games, the Oklahoma State soccer team is undefeated. As it looks to continue its streak, coach Colin Carmichael has reverted to his old ways and will do so with some familiar returners.

The Cowgirls will face off against Central Arkansas (0-3-0) on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saint Louis (2-2-0) on Sunday at 1 p.m at Neal Patterson Stadium.

After playing a 3-43/3-4-2-1 formation for the majority of last season and throughout the spring season, Carmichael decided to go with a 3-5-2 to start the season with Gabriella Coleman and Olyvia Dowell featured as the main two up top.

Despite the Cowgirls (2-0-1) still being undefeated, Carmichael has decided to revert to what he knows best, the 3-4-2-1.

“It’s what benefits the team,” Carmichael said. “Looking at our personnel in the summer going into preseason we thought, ‘Let’s play with two upfront.’ It was good at times, but against Lamar and UTSA we saw two or three things out wide that we didn’t like. I think it put too much stress on our wingbacks

and in turn, when we rolled our wingbacks higher it put too much stress on our back three.”

“We went back to our (3-4-2-1) against (Oklahoma) and it looked better, so we played the same way against (Oral Roberts),” Carmichael said. “I think we’ll continue with our one high, two underneath, but it’s kinda nice that if needed or if the game dictates we can play two high and our kids will be comfortable doing it.”

Through their first three games, the Cowgirls have scored nine goals. Their only problem was that they scored six of those in the second half of games and eight of the nine after the first 30 minutes of play.

OSU has struggled thus far getting off to strong starts, as well as having lulls throughout games offensively.

For Claire Gantzer, this is one of the Cowgirls’ main issues.

“I think it’s really important that we come out really strong and we finish really strong,” Gantzer said. “We’ve kind of struggled with maintaining our pace ninety minutes. We have moments where we slack off, and those need to be less than the moments that we are on.”

help prevent these lulls is Rebekah George.

George was a prolific scorer at Choctaw High School last year and could bring the same impact to the Cowgirls.

“I think Rebekah is a very technical player,” Carmichael said. “She’s very smooth on the ball.

She can keep it, she can pass it, she’ll receive it under pressure. So she’s got some great qualities.

I think the challenge for Rebekah is the physicality and the speed of play.

I think what she’s doing now is figuring out what she can do within the way the games played in college. She’s being more physical, she’s competing better defensively.”

Similar to many freshmen who were attackers in high school, George still has work to do on the defensive side to earn more minutes. “(Defending) is certainly a big thing for a lot of (freshmen), especially those attacking kids,” Carmichael said. “A lot of times they aren’t asked to defend. A lot of times they are the best player on their team and the coach is saying, ‘Get the ball, score goals and we will get people to do all the other stuff.’

Clearly at this level, unless you are ridiculously special you are going to be asked to play both sides of the ball.”

These are the top games to look forward to this month.

First up is Gears 5, developed by The Coalition. It’s the fifth installment in the long-running third-person shooter series Gears of War and direct sequel to Gears of War 4.

In this installment, the main character Kait Diaz, an outsider of locust descent, is looking to uncover the origins and secrets of the locust and her family. JD Fenix, protagonist of Gears of War 4, will return to aid Kait in finding out about her family

and her descendants.

In addition to the singleplayer campaign, Gears 5 offers three-player local split screen and online co-op.

Gears 5 will be released on Sept. 6 on Xbox Game Pass and on Sept. 10 on Xbox One and PC. Now, for the basketball fans. NBA 2K20 is the latest installment in the NBA 2K series developed by Visual Concepts. This year’s version of 2K is full of new features, new historic teams and for the first time ever in 2K, the WNBA will be playable. The new historic teams include the 1-3 comeback Cavaliers, the lob city Clippers and a few other surprises.

In 2K20, the customization of your MyPlayer will be much improved, as they do not limit you nearly as much as in previous 2Ks. This allows the player to choose from a multitude of archetypes, from being a deadeye three-point shooter to a flashy highflyer.

The Neighborhood is much improved from previous renditions, this time having seasonal themes as the year goes along and even more events to participate in with MyPlayer.

2K has also made improvements to the MyTeam game mode, making it more of a grind to get the rarer cards in the game. NBA

2K20 is releasing on Sept. 6 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC and IOS. Back to the shooters, Borderlands 3, is an action RPG first-person shooter and the fourth main installment of the Borderlands series.

Developed by Gearbox Software, the sequel to 2012’s Borderlands 2 is an action

packed shooter that has players choose from four different types of classes and take on various missions.

Borderlands 3 offers the option of solo gameplay or parties of up to four people to take on missions, defeat enemies and loot them for rewards and special items.

This installment introduces four new characters to play

as; Amara, Moze, Zane and FL4K, all with their own sets of special abilities.

Unlike previous Borderlands, characters will be able to unlock up to three special skills, but only allowed to equip one at a time. Borderlands 3 is releasing on Sept.

13 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC and Google Stadia.
