When the fountain is dyed orange, it means only one thing.

It’s time for homecoming.

The celebration of “America’s Greatest Homecoming” brings many events to Oklahoma State University’s campus, and students and alumni can take part in them throughout the week.

The festivities start Monday when OSU’s Campus Life hosts its annual Res Life Tailgate between 5 and 7 p.m. at the Kerr‑Drummond Plaza.

The tailgate will promote residential hall unity and spirit during homecoming. The students who attend the event can enjoy music, food, games and

chances to win door prizes.

Wednesday, the Cowboy family can show its support for the football team and paint Hester Street with encouraging words and drawings. These paintings will decorate the street along the last leg of the Spirit Walk as the Cowboys head to Boone Pickens Stadium before the game. The road painting will take place at 5 p.m.

Later that night, the Seretean Center will host Nobuntu. Nobuntu is a five-part a cappella vocal ensemble made up of young women from Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. The women will fuse traditional Zimbabwean rooted music, Afro Jazz, gospel and crossover with minimalistic percussion. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students. The performance

starts at 8 p.m.

Thursday, the Diversity Hall of Fame will induct five members. These people are former and current OSU staff and professors who contributed to the advancement of diversity and inclusion at OSU. The induction will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the ConocoPhillips OSU Alumni Center.

Also, on Thursday, people can get into the Halloween spirit with a performance from the OSU Symphony Orchestra in the Seretean Center.

Attendees can listen to music from “Harry Potter,” “Jurassic Park,” “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Wicked!”

The instrument petting zoo will begin at 7 p.m., and the concert will start at 7:30 p.m.

General admission is $10, and tickets are $7 for students and seniors.

Students and alumni can see the fraternities’ and sororities’

hard work as they take part in the oldest homecoming tradition, Walkaround. People can tour Greek Row and look at the house displays made of tissue paper. Attendees can vote for their favorite house decorations. The results are revealed at halftime of the football game Saturday.

After Walkaround, OSU fans can fill Gallagher-Iba Arena to cheer on the football team and get a preview of the men’s and women’s basketball teams at the 12th annual Homecoming and Hoops.

Spirit awards for the Library Lawn sign competition and the Res Life decoration competition are presented as part of the event. Previously at Homecoming and Hoops, a wrestling match between two coaches broke out, and Mike Gundy and Mason Rudolph took their shirts off in front of the crowd.

The event will begin at 9 p.m.

Admission is free to the public.

The week leading up to Oklahoma State University’s homecoming is always full of activities on and off campus, and this year is no different.

Stillwater helps OSU celebrate “America’s Greatest Homecoming.” This year, there are several events in the city for the public to attend.

Harvest Carnival and Chili Cook-Off The annual Harvest Carnival and Chili Cook-Off will take place from 6-8 p.m.

Tuesday at the Payne County Expo Center.

OSU student organizations, in conjunction with

the Junior Service League of Stillwater’s Harvest II Food Drive, host the Harvest Carnival. The cost to attend is one canned good per person, but people are encouraged to bring more donations if they can. There will be carnival-style games, prizes and music. At the end of the night, attendees can vote for their favorite games.

The Chili Cook-Off is a competition among student groups and community organizations. The $3 entry fee allows attendees to taste-test the different chilis and vote for their favorite.

At both events, people are encouraged to wear costumes and come ready for a good time.

The Stillwater community comes together for the annual Homecoming Walkaround on OSU’s campus.

Joe State Homecoming Tailgate To celebrate homecoming, Eskimo Joe’s is holding an outdoor concert for people of all ages Friday. The gates will open at 4 p.m., and the music will start at 6 p.m. There is

no cost to attend.

The concert will feature musicians such as Cody Canada and the Departed, Mike McClure and The Brothers Moore. Eskimo Joe’s will sell beer, other adult drinks, Joe’s Classics and bratwursts, Joe’s chili and walking tacos.

On Oct. 24, 2015, four people tragically lost their lives and many others suffered injuries after a car crashed into the OSU homecoming parade. The Stillwater Strong Memorial will be unveiled at 5 p.m. Friday to honor the victims and their families. Join the Stillwater community at the corner of Hall of Fame Avenue and Main Street to honor the lives of those this tragedy affected.

Sea of Orange Parade The annual Sea of Orange Homecoming Parade will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday along Main Street. Barry Sanders is one of the parade’s

grand marshals, along with the offensive linemen who blocked for him during his 1988 Heisman Trophy winning campaign. This year, there are more than 120 entries from OSU student organizations, Greek life and members of the Stillwater community. It’s free to attend, but those unable to go can watch it live on Channel 16 or online at OState TV. OSU’s homecoming week is filled with activities and fun for all ages. Make sure to check out some of the different events in Stillwater.

Review: ‘Mirror Master’ brings new classics for Young the Giant L e sl i e Pete r s on staff reporter @ o colly

Young the Giant, an American indie-rock band, released its fourth studio album “Mirror Master” on Oct. 12.

Prefaced with a release of four singles, the latest effort from Young the Giant features a 12-song track list that offers listeners a solid collection of chill alternative songs. Excited fans waited two years for Young the Giant to release an album since its last project.

genre.

Past albums have frequently displayed reflective qualities, but “Mirror Master” goes above and beyond all other Young the Giant albums to challenge fans with thought-provok-

ing lyrics. Young the Giant still displays songs with its tried and true sound but offers some new and unique elements. Utilizing the strong vocals of lead singer Sameer Gadhia, Young the Giant plays to its strengths in its latest project.

Opening “Mirror Master” with “Superposition,” listeners are greeted with an upbeat song matched with catchy and relaxed breathy vocals. The lyrics center on the chemistry between two people.

The second track, “Simplify,” is heavily emulative of Young the Giant’s past work. It boasts a classic indie-rock sound filled with passionate lyrics about the simplicity of love and wor-

ries about the future.

“Heat of the Summer” also takes advantage of the band’s classic guitar and vocal styling, giving longtime fans some new classics to fall in love with.

“Call Me Back” is an example of Young the Giant’s newer electronic sound. It ditches the guitars for more simplified and digitalized beats while highlighting catchy and simple lyrics.

The album offers a handful of slower and more lyrically focused pieces with “Oblivion,” “You + I” and “Darkest Shade of Blue.” Covering the subjects of hopelessness, mortality and loneliness, the band does not stray

away from serious topics, instead choosing to embrace them.

Young the Giant closes the album with its namesake, “Mirror Master.”

The band embodies its classic sound and style one last time, displaying its harmony.

“Mirror Master” is a testament to Young the Giant’s competence in several genres and mastery of its staple style. Fans and listeners looking for their next indie anthem are sure to enjoy this album.
