Bird Rides Inc. launched in Stillwater on Thursday, placing dozens of dockless scooters throughout the city without permission or permits.

Oklahoma State University issued a statement regarding the scooters, as several students rode them to class Thursday and Friday.

“Oklahoma State University is working with the company to make sure they understand the regulations and policies we have in place for this type of

service on campus,” the statement read. “Scooters are permitted on sidewalks just like bicycles but also require a permit. If scooters are not registered and/or do not have a permit ,they are subject to impound.

Joyce said he supports Bird’s mission but the company needs to obtain the proper permits regardless.

“Personally, I like the idea of alternative modes of transportation for Stillwater,” Joyce said. “It’d be nice if we didn’t have as many cars on the road and as many parking issues and that sort of thing.

I think it’s something that we reasonably need to look at.”

The city has not yet

determined what the consequences will be if Bird continues to operate in Stillwater without a permit. The city council will discuss the topic in its meeting Monday.

“I don’t know what the repercussions will be,” Joyce said. “If they’re committed to being in Stillwater, we need them to come into compliance with codes.

As we have that discussion, we can figure out what those are.”

Being a college freshman can be overwhelming.

On Aug. 20, I started my new adventure as a freshman here at Oklahoma State University.

First, I did not expect the drastic student population change from summer to fall or how the line for the bookstore would reach all the way to the back of the store. Looking at my syllabus the day before gave me a little anxiety, fear not though, my experience gets better: MONDAY, AUGUST 27, 2018

Finding my classes was not so hard. I followed a tip and did a campus tour the night before classes began.

Waking up at 7:30 am every day is not what I had in mind before I moved to Stillwater. I needed that little boost before class started.

Starbucks Double Shot Energy drinks saved my life in the morning. I know my limits and don’t want to depend on caffeine the next four years but for now it’s the highlight of my day.

Now that my first week in college has come to an end I feel myself coming out

of the comfort zone.

Everyone I met this week has been kind and welcoming. I learned that my professors are some of the coolest people with different visions and backgrounds. Also, the food here at Oklahoma State is worth trying.

Adjusting to a new surrounding is hard but this is not just an institution to me, this place is now home.

From the Flash to the Joker, heroes and villains alike were out in full force.

Stillwater’s comic-con community flooded Duck Street on Saturday. Paula Long, Stillwater Public Library’s adult reference librarian, said it was the largest turnout she’d seen in Lexicon’s history.

“It’s almost impossible to keep track of the number of attendees with it being spread across three locations,” Long said.

This year’s Lexicon spread across town to accommodate the large number of people attending. Events were held at the Stillwater Community Center and the Prairie Arts Center. This allowed more vendors from Stillwater and the surrounding communities to participate.

“We were up to 52 vendors this year,” Long said.

“We even had to open an extra room in the commu-

nity center for additional vendors. It’s really cool to have that many people want to come Stillwater, which is helped by our goal to intentionally keep boot fees low at $10 per booth space.”

Vendor booths ranged from EmmyJane Arts and Knights and Arms Tabletop Games to a Super Smash Bros. tournament that Game X-Change hosted. Greg Feagan, the area manager for Game X-Change in Stillwater, spearheaded the tournament.

“This is our third year at Lexicon,” Feagan said.

“However, this is the first time we have held a tournament along with a whole gaming room.”

Feagan said he credits the community feeling that Lexicon brings as a reason why his store continues to attend.

“It’s really a community outreach thing here in Stillwater,” Feagan said.

“The community here needed a good convention because in years prior people would have to go to places like Oklahoma City and Tulsa to find the convention experience.”

is the same reason Kayla Parker said she decided to attend comic-cons around Oklahoma. Parker is from Enid and has found herself at the forefront of her cosplay business, known as “Kyros Cosplay,” for the past 10 months.

“I had no idea what cosplay was until about two years ago,” Parker said. “Then when I was looking for a Halloween costume, I began to notice how cool it was, but at the time I was living in Alaska, so I just did Halloween as normal.

However, once back in Oklahoma I connected

with a group of cosplayers and have been doing it ever since.”

Parker said she fell in love with cosplay because of the ability to be whoever she wanted to be, even if just for a day.

“It’s nice to have a place for everyone to just come and let their inner nerd out,” Feagan said.

“Stillwater needed a place for that, and thanks to Lexicon, we have that.”

“It’s hot, everyone was tired, so it was nice to get it done,” Zoller said.

“It’s really rewarding because we’ve had so many chances, and I think we were the better team both halves, so it was frustrating not getting the lead early.”

The Cowgirls (3-0) and the Gators had opportunities to score throughout regulation, but stellar defensive play from both sides kept the contest in a stalemate. With 15 shots, OSU nearly doubled the Gators’ shot total of seven, though it failed to connect until Zoller’s

winner.

Seconds after kickoff, Cowgirl senior Haley Woodard took the ball ahead of the defense and had a one-on-one with Florida goalkeeper Kaylan Marckese.

Marckese made a tricky save to prevent OSU from taking an early lead.

In the ninth minute, the Cowgirls again had opportunities to get on the board, but three consecutive corner kicks and multiple shots didn’t result in a goal.

The match was more physical than OSU’s last two games. The officials allowed a few potential fouls to slide on both sides.

“It wasn’t dirty by any

stretch,” coach Colin Carmichael said. “It was an NCAA Tournament level game. You expect some physicality.”

Sophomore Dani Greenlee received her second start at goalkeeper of the season, though she is still splitting time with redshirt freshman Hannah Warner.

OSU’s defensive play kept her from having to make a save during her time on the field.

In roughly three halves of play, she hasn’t allowed a goal.

Warner made a few key plays when she entered the game after the half. In the 74th minute, a Florida header off a corner kick nearly squeaked in under

the crossbar. With an outstretched arm, Warner got just enough of it to tap it over the post.

In the 82nd minute, Woodard had one more chance to break the stalemate ahead of the Gators’ defense, but her shot sailed wide of the mark.

With the score still tied at zero, the Cowgirls and Gators (2-2) headed to overtime with Zoller scoring the game winner.

The Cowgirls’ performance against a top opponent encouraged sophomore Hannah Webb, who played all 102 minutes.

“It shows us where we are and where we can be,” Webb said.

The victory keeps the

Cowgirls’ undefeated season going, as they moved to 3-0 on the season.

Carmichael said playing a great opponent like Florida early in the season helps him evaluate his team moving forward.

“The Bedlam game tested our character,” Carmichael said. “Lamar tested our patience … and Florida just tested everything. We just had to be at our best to win today, and we did. It lets us know we can play with anybody.”
