Stillwater Crime Notes: SPD makes pot and cocaine busts elli e meler o staff reporter @ elan o r m el er o Domestic Disturbance

A Stillwater man was arrested the morning of Sept.

26 after police responded to a domestic disturbance call involving a gun at 1400 N. Perkins Road.

Police arrived at approximately 8:30 a.m. and set up a perimeter around the apartment. After police knocked on the door, two women exited the apartment and informed officers the suspect was upstairs with a gun and two other women, according to a police report.

A few moments later, Devin Tereze Thompson, 20, left the apartment with his hands in the air. He was handcuffed and taken into custody. Two other women then exited the apartment as well, according to the report.

Police searched the apartment and found two guns, one of which belonged to one of the residents of the apartment, according to the report.

One of the women was Thompson’s girlfriend, according to the report.

At 1:30 a.m. Thompson went to the store with two of the women and was flirting with one of them, according to records.

When the trio arrived at the apartment, the girl informed Thompson’s girlfriend of the flirting, causing Thompson and his girlfriend to become upset, according to the report.

Thompson reportedly pulled out a gun and

blocked the three women from leaving the room. He threatened to beat them and kill them, according to the report. His girlfriend denied seeing a gun. A fourth woman stated she was asleep downstairs during the ordeal, according to the report.

Thompson was arrested for kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon and taken to the Payne County Jail, according to the report.

Thompson made his first appearance before a judge on Sept. 27, and his bail was set at $50,000. He will make his next appearance at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Hug pups, not pot Stillwater police responded to a report of possible animal abuse and drug activity Sept. 23 at the Speedy Splash Car Wash at 324 E. Sixth Ave. When an officer arrived, a witness pointed out a silver SUV. The officer approached the SUV and knocked on the window. When the window was rolled down, smoke poured out of it, according to the report.

Three OSU students were occupying the car: Margaret Amorie Jones, 18; Zauriae Dujoycia Norwood, 19; and Aryael Lacey Thompson, 19. The three were reportedly high on marijuana, and Thompson was in possession of a small puppy.

Jones, Norwood and Thompson were cited for possession of marijuana and marijuana paraphernalia. The complaint of animal abuse was unfounded, according to police reports.

‘Oh, that’s cocaine’

At 3:45 a.m. on Sept. 22, Stillwater police were dispatched to the Short Stop convenience store at 1010 W. Sixth St. in response to a 911 hang-up call.

When officers arrived at the scene, there were several cars in the parking lot and a group of people in the store. When those people noticed the arrival of police, they began to move toward their cars, according to the police report.

When officers entered the store, Henry Calum Emerald Moon, 21, who

was visibly drunk, began making racist comments and complaining the store clerk was refusing to sell him alcohol, according to records. After officers asked Moon to step outside the store, they had to escort him out, according to the report.

Police asked the store clerk what had happened.

The clerk said he was refusing to sell Moon alcohol and that Moon was threatening to “drag him over the counter and beat his ass,” according to the report.

When officers requested identification from Moon, many of his companions tried to interfere and were warned to move away.

Moon admitted to threatening the clerk for not selling him alcohol and admitted that he had been drinking, according to the

Moon was placed under arrest for public intoxication. While he was patted down, Moon admitted to possessing marijuana.

Along with a bag of weed, officers also found a bag full of a white, powdery substance.

When asked what it was, Moon replied, “Oh, that’s cocaine,” according to the report.

Moon was arrested and taken to the SPD jail. He made his first court appearance Sept. 27 and pleaded not guilty. He will make his next court appearance Oct. 9.

Assault with deadly weapon

Stillwater police were dispatched Tuesday at 12:40 a.m. to the Stonegate Apartments, located at

1815 N Boomer Road, in response to a 911 call.

A woman made the 911 call claiming that her boyfriend hit her in the head with a hammer. The 911 operator advised her to seek shelter in a secure room with a locked door until police arrived. Shortly after, the call was disconnected and the operator was unable to reconnect with the woman, according to the police report.

Upon arrival at Stonegate police initially had trouble finding the apartment where the 911 call had been made. With the help of some of the neighbors, police were able to locate the correct apartment, according to the report.

When officers arrived at the correct apartment, they found the woman and her boyfriend. The woman had blunt force trauma to the back of the head and was taken to the Stillwater Medical Center. There she was treated for a broken skull and cut and then released, according to the report.

Jesus Valdez Bravo, 47, was arrested at the scene for aggravated domestic assault and battery, according to the report.

Valdez Bravo is awaiting a court date.

Wind ensemble to perform ‘Introductions and Anniversaries’ J e t turn er staff reporter @ ocolly

One hundred years after the birth of Leonard Bernstein and 50 years after the Soviet Union crushed the Prague Spring reform movement, the Oklahoma State University Wind Ensemble will perform pieces to commemorate both events.

Under the direction of Joseph Missal, the OSU Wind Ensemble will present its first concert of the season, “Introductions and Anniversaries,” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the Seretean Center for Performing Arts.

The concert will include scores from Stephen Montague, Claude Debussy,

Karel Husa and Bernstein.

The concert will open with Montague’s “Entrada 1631” and will then feature Debussy’s “The Engulfed Cathedral” and the transcription-premier of “Four Debussy Songs,” which Andrew Anderson, a former student of Missal, transcribed.

Anderson is the associate director of bands at the University of Tulsa.

“Four Debussy Songs” features Ryan Gardner, an OSU associate professor of trumpet. These pieces will serve as the introductions of the concert.

The second half of the concert will begin with Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Husa’s “Music for Prague 1968.”

Missal said Husa wrote

this piece to programmatically recreate the Russian invasion of Prague.

“It is an important piece historically, and I believe it is one of our top-10 wind ensemble masterwork(s),” Missal said.

The final piece of the night is Bernstein’s Profanation from the “Jeremiah Symphony.” “(Bernstein) is significant for American music,” Missal said. “You have a person who was another Pulitzer Prize-winning composer, a Jewish-American icon and contributed some of America’s favorite music, from ‘Candide’ to ‘The Mass’ to this piece. Bernstein was a music composer who could straddle seri-

ous classical music with musical theater and with instrumental music, he could do it all.”

Missal said he and the OSU Wind Ensemble worked tirelessly to prepare for this week’s concert.

“I spent the whole summer studying the scores and researching the music,” Missal said.

Sarah Bartlett, a flute player, said members of

the ensemble have put in a lot of effort to ensure the performance is a success.

“Not only do we practice as a full ensemble, but we also have weekly sectionals led by the principal players to collaborate and practice as a section,” Bartlett said.

Tickets for the concert are $7 for students and $10 for general admission.

“I know the students have poured their energies into each piece,” Missal said. “It should be an earthshaking performance.”

Review: “Hell Fest” offers thrilling theme park ride j e t turn er staff repoter @ ocolly

Gregory Plotkin’s “Hell Fest” follows a group of friends as they search for a night of terror and fun at a Halloween-themed festival.

Things take a turn for the worse when a masked serial killer turns the horrorthemed amusement park into his own personal playground.

The setting makes it difficult for characters to discern between real danger and park-related amusement. He begins terrorizing Natalie (Amy Forsyth), Brooke (Reign Edwards) and

the rest of their friends in what started as a fun-filled night of scares and thrills.

“Hell Fest” begins as a stereotypical teenage horror flick and does little to set itself apart from other horror movies until the last 20 minutes of the movie.

These last minutes not only provide the most intense and suspenseful sequence of the movie, but also provide one of the best cliffhangers in a movie of this type. The ending sets up an opportunity for a sequel.

ter development. The acting is not awardwinning but portrays the terror necessary to make the fear in film genuine.

The two standouts in this film are actresses Forsyth and Edwards.

Their chemistry on

screen is apparent from the beginning, and their friendship comes to life toward the end of the film.

Humor is sprinkled in to provide some comedic relief and variety in tone to a suspenseful movie.

The comedy is genuinely funny and offers a bright spot in the movie.

Although “Hell Fest” is mostly generic, the writers and directors are able to offer enough surprises and antics to keep the audience entertained. At a running time of only 86 minutes, the fast pace keeps the audience engaged.

The setting portrays the horror of the entire festival perfectly. The film crew makes the story come to life with the use of props and special effects. The mazes in the movie are incredibly detailed, and each offers a new take

on amusement park horror.

Ultimately, “Hell Fest” is not the scariest horror movie.

Although the villain is creepy and the kills are gory, the film itself does not keep fans up at night.

“Hell Fest” heavily relies on jump scares and becomes predictable at times.

But fans looking for a fun, suspenseful movie to watch with a group of friends can look no further.

Gundy Notebook: Brailford notches Big 12 honor wad e haug en copy chief @wade_HAU GEN

After tallying eight tackles, five tackles for loss and three sacks, Jordan Brailford received recognition.

Brailford was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after his performance in the Oklahoma State football team’s 48-28 defeat of Kansas on Saturday in Lawrence.

Brailford was all over the field, wreaking havoc for the entirety of the game, something OSU fans have become used to seeing this season. Coach Mike Gundy was complimentary of Brailford, a senior defender, at Monday’s weekly press

conference, crediting much of his performance to his ability to stay healthy through this point in the season.

“He’s been very talented for a number of years,” Gundy said. “He’s been slowed a little bit by health … He’s been healthy (this season), he plays fast, he’s energetic. What people don’t realize is, when you play the game at this level and you have nagging injuries all the time, you just don’t feel that good … Now he’s healthy, and I think he feels good. He’s comfortable, he’s practicing hard and I think we’re starting to see those results.”

‘I hope like crazy that he’s here next year’

Before the KU game Saturday, it was announced that Darrion Daniels would miss the rest of the season with a finger injury that will require surgery.

Daniels had played in each game during the past four seasons except for three last year. He could come back for another season with OSU if he wanted because of the new NCAA rules allowing players to appear in four games and still redshirt.

But when asked Monday whether Daniels would attempt to come back next season to play for the Cowboys, Gundy had a response many people hadn’t considered.

“He could go somewhere else and play,” Gundy said.

“So that’s what you’re faced with as a coach trying to balance your numbers with your 85 scholarships and your 25 initials which I’m not really excited about right now based on the new policies that are in place and the way that we’re handling the numbers at this point.

“I hope like crazy that he’s here next year. But I’m giving you an example of the life we live. In that situation, just like anybody else in the country, the player has the liberal advantage of at any time, walking in and saying I’m going to put my name in a database, could be at the end of this spring, and go play somewhere else … It was very difficult to take. Any time a player

is injured, it’s hard to take.”

Hill’s Touches Since spring ball, Justice Hill’s touches per game have been a common topic of discussion. Gundy has reiterated that he and his coaching staff plan to limit Hill’s carries this season, hoping to keep him averaging 15 per game.

Saturday against the Jayhawks, Hill carried the ball 31 times for 189 yards and a touchdown. He leads the Big 12 in rushing with 577 yards per game, averaging more than seven yards per carry.

Although the numbers are there, Gundy is still concerned with his running back’s workload.

“I have concerns about him carrying the ball 30

times,” Gundy said. “I wanted him at 15 a game, that’s exactly what he’s at.

He’s right where we want him to be. That’s why we conserved him early in the year … It doesn’t make a difference when the hits occur. I’m concerned about him toting the rock 30 times a game.

“That’s a lot of wear and tear on him ‘cause those guys take more direct shots than any other position.

Thirty (Chuba Hubbard) can run, and 27 (J.D. King) can run. We like them, we have confidence in them.”
