The Oklahoma State football team isn’t perfect.

The comparisons to Tyreek Hill began long before Chuba Hubbard committed to Oklahoma State.

Those were to be expected.

Hubbard, like Hill during his time in Stillwater, is a dual-sport athlete on the Cowboy football team and the OSU track and field team.

They possess worldclass speed that can separate them from tacklers any time the defense foolishly allows them to get into open space on the football field.

With this speed comes an unmistakable aura surrounding Hubbard this season, probably because many people in the stadium know he is a three-time Canadian track national champion and could burn every defender on the field if he breaks free from the line of scrimmage.

Hubbard redshirted the past season as a freshman, though he still traveled to every game as a precautionary back in case of injury to one of the guys ahead of him on the depth chart.

“It was definitely a long year, but I knew if I took advantage of it and worked hard that this year was gonna be an amazing year,” Hubbard said. “I got a lot stronger … put a lot of weight FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2018

on.”

Now twice as muscular as he looked in high school, Hubbard resides no higher on the depth chart than in 2017. He’s still the fourth string behind Justice Hill, one of the best running backs in the country, and talented playmakers J.D. King and LD Brown.

On most college football rosters, any measurable hype surrounding the fourth-string running back would be nonexistent. But for Hubbard, his speed backs up the hype. It demands coaches to find not only creative ways to get him on the field but also ways to get the ball in his hands in open space.

He played solely as the starting running back for Bev Facey Community High School in his hometown of Sherwood Park in Alberta, Canada, but he recognized the talent around him when he got to Stillwater. He spent his redshirt year improving on catching as a receiving back so he could impact the game in a variety of ways once he saw the field rather than just as a ball carrier.

“I worked on it a lot since I got here,” Hubbard said. “Since day one I worked on it because I knew my hands needed to be better because I wanted to be someone who could flex out and be a little receiver-type back and run up the middle and

pass block. I wanted to be an all-around back.”

Hubbard briefly showcased his breakaway speed in OSU’s season opener against Missouri State when he caught a swing pass from Taylor Cornelius and juked out his defender before turning on the jets for a 54-yard touchdown.

Coming from Canada, Hubbard didn’t expect to receive a lot of attention from coaches on the recruiting landscape. His plan was to hopefully receive an offer from a Division I school to run track and field and then walk on to the football team.

But as he tore up opposing defenses and racked up numerous highlight plays

throughout his high school career, recruiters started taking notice. He received his first offer to play football from Colorado.

Hubbard said he knew about OSU just from following college football, but he never pictured himself living in Stillwater.

“I didn’t even know the town was called Stillwater,” Hubbard said.

But thanks to a connection former OSU running backs coach Marcus Arroyo, now Oregon’s offensive coordinator, had in Canada, Hubbard ended up a Cowboy.

“I like the coaches, the players and just this town. The people in it are really nice.”

Hubbard finished his first collegiate game with 42 rushing yards and 65 receiving yards, but substantial playing time for him as the primary runner is unlikely as the season progresses.

Hubbard got most of his touches, including the touchdown, in garbage time against a significantly inferior opponent.

The Cowboys put only one running back on the field at a time, generally, with an occasional Cowboy back sprinkled in to block for him.

“I’m not quite sure what my role is,” Hubbard said. “I know just

wherever they need me, whatever they need me to do, whether it’s block, catch the ball or run, I’ll be the one to do it. I’ll just do whatever they need me to do.”

The odds Hubbard sees the field with any sort of regularity depends on his ability to impact the game in other ways, specifically as a blocker, receiver and kick returner.

But as he showed in the season opener, all he needs is the ball in open space to make a big play happen. His speed will take care of the rest.

When Oklahoma State quarterback Taylor Cornelius, a Bushland High School graduate, trotted onto the field Aug. 30 at Boone Pickens Stadium for his first career start, there were 50,103 people in the crowd, most of them draped in “America’s brightest orange.”

Nerves came with the large number of fans. That showed in Cornelius’ performance against Missouri State, which OSU defeated 58-17.

“It wasn’t perfect by any means,” Cornelius said. “It’s something to improve on, something to look at on tape and move forward.”

Although he was inaccurate at times, especially on downfield throws, Cornelius still managed to go 24-for-34 for 295 yards, five touchdowns and an interception.

His teammates continue to show unwavering support in their quarterback leading into the South Alabama game this week.

Jalen McCleskey caught two touchdowns from Cornelius in the season opener. He said he thinks Cornelius, a redshirt senior, will continue improving each week.

“I thought Cornelius played pretty good,” McCleskey said. “First time out there being the starter, I felt like he distributed the ball, he went through his reads, he got the ball out quick when he needed to.

“He’s getting more into that leadership role. He’s been growing at it each week. … We’re all not perfect, we’re going to mess up sometimes, so I wasn’t really worried about it.

I know that he can make that throw, and when the

time comes and we get farther into the season, I know we will be connecting better.”

After the game, coach Mike Gundy said to be patient with Cornelius given past examples, such as Mason Rudolph’s first career start. Rudolph, who is the all-time passing leader at OSU, went 13-for-25 for 281 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in his debut against Baylor in 2014.

Perhaps the biggest adjustment for Cornelius this season doesn’t involve the field. For the first time in his five years in Stillwater, Cornelius gets to watch himself in film on Sundays rather than Rudolph.

“After four years of

watching Mason (on film) every Sunday, it’s a little different,” Cornelius said.

“I enjoyed it. I learned a lot. There’s a lot to improve on, there’s no doubt about that.”

When a reporter asked Gundy what he wanted to see from Cornelius in week two, Gundy’s response was short but as clear as the picture on the new video board mounted in the east end zone of Boone Pickens Stadium.

“What I would like for him to do is to go play and go play fearless.”

One season ago, the Oklahoma State soccer team traveled west to face San Francisco and California.

Before the matches, the Cowgirls had a 9-1-0 record.

After a grueling 110-minute game, the Cowgirls tied with USF at one, maintaining their undefeated streak. Two days later, OSU suffered its first defeat of the season, losing 3-0 to Cal. OSU will compete at home against the Golden Bears on 7 p.m. Friday for its chance at redemption. The Cowgirls will meet USF at 1 p.m. Sunday at Neal Patterson Stadium.

21st in the nation according to a United Soccer Coaches poll, coach Colin Carmichael said he doesn’t want the Cowgirls to underestimate either upcoming opponent.

“Cal is one of the best teams in the Pac-12 every year,” Carmichael said. “San Francisco is 5-1, they’re probably a little bit surprising that they’ve done well, but they were a good team last year.”

Senior forward Haley Woodard has continued to lead the Cowgirls (4-1-0) into battle each match.

Similar to Carmichael, she doesn’t underrate Cal or USF. “We just know we didn’t have our best games against either of those teams,” Woodard said. “Being on our

home field, I feel like it gives us an advantage.”

This season, Carmichael has put most of his trust in Woodard and senior Marlo Zoller to lead the attack.

After five games, Woodard and Zoller have each recorded two goals and an assist.

The past Sunday against Loyola Chicago, Woodard assisted Zoller on a goal after a cross 23 yards out.

“They’re good friends, and they’ve hung out for a long time, so I think they complement each other really well,” Carmichael said.

Woodard is averaging five shots per game, the most in the Big-12.

Through five games, Carmichael has continued to switch goalkeepers at half.

Friday, redshirt freshman Hannah Warner will likely start in goal. Sunday, redshirt sophomore Dani Greenlee will likely play the first half.

Warner and Greenlee have combined for three shutouts and have a goal differential of plus seven.

Greenlee said working with Warner provides great competition, and they’ve become each other’s No. 1 supporter.

“We are both extremely supportive of each other because we’re completely different goalkeepers,” Greenlee said.

Warner and Greenlee have combined for 15 saves and have faced 51 shots. Opposing goalkeepers have had more work when playing against the Cowgirls. OSU

has totaled 74 shots with 22 of the shots on goal saved.

In Warner’s first season for OSU, she has already made a name for herself. She ranks second in the Big 12 for save percentage, saving 91.7 percent of shots on goal.

After what Carmichael has seen from both goalkeepers, he said he will continue to swap them at halftime until he sees one goalie is doing better than the other.

Cal (3-2) and USF have enforcing forwards the Cowgirls will have to contain.

Junior Abi Kim has been the Golden Bears’ star player this season. She has tallied three goals and an assist in four games.

Samantha Jehnings has been nearly unstoppable on the field. Jehnings has scored five goals with multiple-goal games against Drake and Montana.

If the Cowgirls want to have a better outcome than last season’s matches against Cal and USF (5-1), they’ll need to contain Kim and Jehnings.

“It’ll be two really tough opponents,” Carmichael said. “The good news is we’re at home and we feel really good about ourselves, so it should be pretty fun games.”

There is a show for everyone this season at the Oklahoma State University Department of Theatre.

Students will have opportunities to see action, drama and musicals during the 2018-19 production year.

The season kicks off Oct. 11 with “The Three Musketeers,” featuring performance professor Lloyd Caldwell as director. Based on the 1844 adventure novel of the same name, the show focuses on the time period of the piece.

Carly Conklin, a representative from the department, said the setting of the play will be evident through the set and costumes.

“Hats, boots, puffy pants, the whole thing,” said Conklin, who also directs one of this season’s plays.

There will be plenty of action and combat for this classic story.

Caldwell appointed senior theatre major Charli Granato as the assistant fight director to coordinate the combat scenes.

Granato has been recognized nationally and internationally. She has certification through Fight Directors Canada, meaning she can bring professional quality to the difficult art of stage combat.

He is cast in “The Three Musketeers” as Count De Rochefort.

In his final performance for the department, he is looking to add a new skill to his acting repertoire.

Pietruszewski said he is excited for the opportunity.

“This is my last show,” Pietruszewski said. “And stage combat is always something I’ve wanted to try.”

The show is an intense mystery-drama, ideal for anyone who enjoys high-level acting and heavy subject matters.

Written in 2004, “Doubt” follows Catholic priest Father Flynn, who is accused of sexual misconduct involving a young boy in the convent. When Sister Aloysius brings forth a call to justice, the struggle between her and Father Flynn escalates. This leads to great doubt in their faith and in their own morality.

The play won the 2005 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award for Best Play.

The department will perform “True West” under Conklin’s direction starting Feb. 14.

American playwright Sam Shepard wrote the script for “True West,” a story of sibling rivalry and “a fight for dominance.” There will be golf clubs, toasters, typewriters and house plants. The play was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1983.

Conklin described the show as “gritty.” She said unlike the department’s current Vivia Locke Theatre, the intimacy of the new Davis Theatre brings a new

life to the production.

She said the audience will feel the intense emotions of the play in a new way.

“The audience has a much closer proximity to the subject matter,” Conklin said.

The department concludes its season with Rogers and Hammerstein’s “Oklahoma!” in April. “(It) ushered in the golden age of musical theatre,” Conklin said.

The show gives outsiders a true representation of Oklahoma life. “Oklahoma!” lays claim to the title of the first successful “book musical” with song and dance that advance the plot.

Since its creation in 1943, it has been a staple of the musical theatre world. The musical even gave Oklahoma its state song.

This will be the largest show of the season, with a cast of 11 characters and many ensemble members.

The department’s public relations executive Michele Hockersmith said she expects a large number of ticket sales because of the size of the production.

Anne Cooley is the guest director and choreographer for the production. The production team includes production manager Lee Brasuell, scenic director Eric Barker and

costume designer Renee Garcia. Joseph Missal of the Greenwood School of Music will conduct the OSU wind ensemble for the “Oklahoma!” production.

New students, including freshmen and transfers, are given one free ticket to a show of their choice during the 2018-19 season of performances. Students can also buy discounted season-ticket packages.

After a four-month hiatus, Coney Island, a popular destination on The Strip, will make a return.

General manager Keiton Lawson said he expects a soft reopening for the 7 p.m. kickoff of the Oklahoma State football game against South Alabama on Saturday.

“We are going ahead to open it as soon as possible,” Lawson said. “Hopefully, we would like to be opened by the second game coming up this Saturday.”

Lawson said the soft opening will last for a week and a half.

An official grand opening is slated for the following week, in time for the football game

against Boise State.

“We are not for sure when (the grand opening) is,” Lawson said. “It depends on the owners’ schedule. We will have a VIP night, then the grand opening. “(On VIP night), we will have the president of Oklahoma State University, the mayor of Stillwater and people from Board of Commerce. In the end, it is kind of for them to have a firsthand view of what we have going on. From there, we will announce a grand opening and have a huge celebration for it.”

The revamped Coney Island will feature a double-sized dining room with a capacity of 100 seats. The building will have a new sign, kitchen equipment, lighting, sound system and expanded bathrooms. These improvements are intended to

Lawson said the remodel has cost around $7 million, but that number isn’t final. There is a second phase planned following the grand opening, as Coney Island looks to expand its business.

“We will be adding phase

two, which will be a full-service bar with seating with (a) garage door and TV, almost a sports bar type of thing,” Lawson said. “We will be also adding a catering facility and a deck that overlooks The Strip that you can rent out for 150 people and a satellite bar on top of that as well.”

Owner Craig Bonham partnered with Gary and Claudia Humphreys, who made the primary donation for the new video board at Boone Pickens Stadium, to buy the restaurant in March. Bonham made it clear the restaurant, which is having its 50th anniversary in 2019, needed to change its look.

“We want to keep the Coney Island concept alive, but it definitely needs a revision and an upgrade,” Bonham said.

“Obviously the facilities could not handle the amount of guests that try to come in, especially late at night. We can feed twice as many people in the space we have, and we can feed them three times faster.”

The menu remains the same with one exception. Wings join the traditional Coney Island-

style hot dogs and the fried onion burger on the list. Coney Island is the first venue on the The Strip to add wings on the menu.

Bonham said his vision of creating a more friendly environment for people to drop by during the day spurred the addition of wings to the menu.

“We added wings (because we are) trying to create another option beside Coney Island just year after year being a late-night place to go after drinking,” Bonham said. “We really want to create a place for people who want to come from lunch or from dinner to hang out.”

Pistol Pete wood carving sprouts up

Although a part of history couldn’t stand forever, an artistic piece has replaced it.

The Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity of Oklahoma State University had artwork constructed on its front lawn. The carving of Pistol Pete from the trunk of an old tree reached completion Aug. 27.

The tree standing in front of the house started to decay last summer. Chris Busby, a member of the SAE Alumni Board, said the board finally decided to take the tree down because a limb fell from it, creating FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2018

a hazard for the community.

The fraternity commissioned Clayton Coss of Clayton Coss Chainsaw Carvings for the art. The project took Coss about five days to complete, including the cutting of the tree and the carving of the stump.

SAE Alumni Board member Dick Ford had seen Coss’ carvings across Tulsa and created the idea for the Pistol Pete carving.

The board initially didn’t want to remove the tree because it had sentimental value to the fraternity.

Instead of leaving a scar on the property, Ford suggested that Coss come to the SAE house and carve the tree into the likeness of Pistol Pete.

Although Coss had carved the OSU mascot several times, it was his first visit to Stillwater.

“I was very interested in doing the carving,” Coss said. “I’ve carved Pistol Pete many times but never been in the heart of Pistol

While cutting down and carving the tree, he took a look at the rings of the

wood growth to see how old the tree was. Coss said what he found surprised him.

“It surprised me that it wasn’t older than what it was,” Coss said. “The tree is somewhere around 80 years old. It grew very fast, so a tree that size easily could have been over 100 years old.”

When Ford suggested the carving, the rest of the board members liked the idea, but didn’t think it would be a good use of the renovation funds. Busby posted in the SAE alumni Facebook group that the tree needed to be removed from the premise and because of inadequate funds, SAE couldn’t have the carving done.

Nathan Greer, an SAE alumnus, saved the project when he reached out to Busby to see if he could start a GoFundMe to raise money for the carving.

Review: ‘Disenchantment’ delivers raunchy fairytale series Dani el M utai staff reporter @ o c olly

Futurama creator Matt Groening brings Netflix fans “Disenchantment,” an original series with a dark sense of humor.

The first 10 episodes were released Aug. 17 with 10 more to come.

The series is meant for an adult audience, with a raunchy sense of humor that includes several sexual innuendos.

Set in the past, the series follows Princess Tiabeanie (Abbi Jacobson), or Bean, in the fantasy world of Dreamland along with

the friends she meets on her adventures. The series offers a twisted view of a princess featuring her as an alcoholic. She has an elf friend who doesn’t fit in with the other jolly elves because of his gloominess. She also has a demon who has attached himself to her.

She continues to defy the wishes of her father in every way and puts herself in horrible situations. Her demon, Luci (Eric Andre), is usually the bad influence behind her decisions. She might be seen as a roughhousing tomboy, but she also has a soft side for her

After continuous bickering between the princess and the father, he forces her to choose between life as a princess or life as a commoner. The

king puts her through several terrible ordeals because he believes a demon has possessed her. He orders her to do an exorcism with an odd priest. The king doesn’t take his daughter’s wishes into consideration and con-

stantly put her friends in danger.

She realizes that she might never be happy until she discovers her father is attempting to make the elixir of life.

This elixir could eliminate her problems.

A princess has many responsibilities, but Tiabeanie just wants to be a regular teenager with a drinking problem.

To complicate matters, her friend Elfo (Nat Faxon) is in love with her and always gets in the way of her love interests. Luci generally creates problems but decides to put his mischievous personality aside to

help the princess and the elf.

The series puts the life of a regular teenager today in the shoes of a princess who lives in a fantasy world riddled with disease, misconceptions and a demanding king.

She struggles to find her calling in life and wants a sense of purpose. Until she finds her purpose, she will be stuck as a princess in the kingdom of Dreamland.

Review: Meghan Trainor delivers pre-release in anticipation of new album Su sa nna L eM aste rs

“All About That Bass” artist Meghan Trainor is set to release her album “TREAT MYSELF” in 2019.

Trainor has already given fans a glimpse of what’s to come with a five-track pre-release.

She exceeds expectations with her five selfassured songs, “CAN’T DANCE,” “ALL THE WAYS,” “LET YOU BE RIGHT,” “NO EXCUSES” and “TREAT MYSELF.” All five songs give a sense of empowerment to listeners. The common Trainor theme is FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 2018

reflected once again in this album. Listeners should expect the rest of the album to follow this pattern as well.

She brings her daring personality into all five songs. In this prerelease, Trainor created a catchy sound that will run through fans’ heads for weeks. It sets out to empower fans with its messages.

In Trainor’s compelling song “TREAT MYSELF,” she inspires her listeners to give themselves a round of applause. The line, “I’m gon’ be good to me, you could be good to you,” exudes positivity and encourages others to do the same.

It seems these are the same confident songs fans have heard and will continue to hear.

She released “NO EXCUSES” in March to kick off her new album. It focuses on respect and points out she will not settle for anything less. The lines, “Your mama raised you better than that,” and, “You must have confused me, confused me with someone else,” show how she views respect. She has high standards for herself and expects the same of others. If others do not, they must have her confused with someone else.

Fans expected Trainor to release her full 15-track album in August, but she pushed it back until January 2019. No collaborations have been announced for this album.

Trainor is an artist who can stand alone, once again proving she is self-assured. She sets out to surpass fans’ expectations and succeeds with this pre-release.
